be_v always_o propose_v as_o the_o midse_n whereby_o and_o through_o who_o a_o sinner_n come_v to_o god_n so_o that_o we_o have_v access_n with_o boldness_n not_o to_o the_o mediator_n as_o a_o distinct_a party_n but_o to_o god_n through_o and_o by_o he_o therefore_o there_o be_v the_o same_o common_a way_n of_o application_n to_o god_n and_o to_o christ_n the_o same_o covenant_n and_o promise_n the_o same_o exercise_n of_o repentance_n of_o faith_n and_o of_o prayer_n which_o give_v we_o access_n to_o god_n and_o that_o give_v we_o access_n to_o the_o mediator_n 3._o beware_v of_o place_v this_o improve_n and_o use_v make_v of_o the_o mediator_n intercession_n in_o word_n or_o petition_n direct_v to_o the_o mediator_n which_o i_o apprehend_v be_v the_o use_n that_o the_o most_o or_o to_o keep_v up_o and_o maintain_v their_o peace_n with_o god_n which_o be_v in_o effect_n the_o way_n lay_v down_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n when_o adam_n be_v a_o friend_n another_o extreme_a be_v in_o the_o defect_n and_o that_o be_v when_o person_n go_v to_o god_n by_o christ_n yet_o do_v not_o lay_v weight_n on_o his_o intercession_n as_o become_v when_o not_o only_o they_o want_v confidence_n which_o the_o other_o have_v though_o on_o a_o wrong_a ground_n but_o do_v not_o lay_v the_o burden_n on_o the_o right_a ground_n but_o go_v to_o god_n faint_o and_o discouraged_o as_o fear_v to_o trust_v or_o lippen_n to_o christ_n intercession_n there_o be_v necessity_n to_o guard_v against_o both_o these_o for_o there_o must_v be_v such_o a_o usemaking_a of_o christ_n intercession_n as_o we_o dare_v not_o go_v by_o he_o and_o yet_o a_o concur_v act_n of_o faith_n put_v we_o to_o go_v to_o god_n by_o he_o and_o to_o lay_v the_o weight_n of_o what_o we_o seek_v and_o expect_v on_o he_o and_o on_o his_o intercession_n now_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v presuppose_v to_o the_o usemaking_a of_o christ_n intercession_n guard_n against_o the_o first_o extreme_a and_o these_o thing_n wherein_o the_o use_n make_v of_o it_o proper_o consist_v guard_v against_o the_o other_o extreme_a first_o then_o these_o thing_n presuppose_v be_v 1._o a_o conviction_n of_o our_o natural_a sinfulness_n not_o only_o of_o the_o distance_n that_o be_v betwixt_o god_n and_o we_o but_o of_o the_o quarrel_n and_o enimity_n and_o that_o by_o our_o deserve_n we_o may_v just_o have_v the_o door_n of_o access_n to_o god_n shut_v upon_o we_o that_o be_v it_o that_o put_v the_o sinner_n to_o ask_v for_o a_o intercessor_n &_o to_o make_v use_n of_o he_o â—s_v these_o who_o have_v provoke_v a_o great_a person_n fear_v to_o go_v their_o alone_a to_o he_o but_o seek_v for_o the_o mediation_n of_o some_o special_a friend_n or_o favourite_n 2._o there_o be_v presuppose_v a_o consent_n to_o and_o acceptation_n of_o christ_n satisfaction_n as_o the_o ground_n of_o our_o peace_n with_o god_n for_o there_o be_v no_o access_n to_o his_o intercession_n till_o this_o ground_n be_v lay_v because_o all_o the_o efficacy_n that_o be_v in_o christ_n intercession_n result_v from_o and_o be_v sound_v upon_o his_o satisfaction_n 1_o john_n 2.2_o if_o any_o man_n sin_n we_o have_v anâ—â—vocat_n with_o the_o father_n jesus_n christ_n the_o righteous_a who_o be_v the_o propitiation_n for_o our_o sin_n he_o procure_v nothing_o by_o his_o intercession_n but_o through_o the_o that_o he_o will_v soon_o be_v engage_v and_o then_o have_v hope_n of_o prevail_v with_o god_n if_o his_o satisfaction_n be_v miskent_a will_v be_v to_o no_o purpose_n for_o as_o we_o show_v in_o the_o first_o use_n of_o this_o point_n he_o intercee_v only_o for_o his_o own_o people_n who_o be_v believer_n in_o he_o and_o have_v close_v with_o his_o satisfaction_n and_o as_o we_o show_v from_o revel_n 8._o it_o be_v only_o the_o prayer_n of_o all_o saint_n that_o be_v offer_v up_o by_o he_o i_o mean_v none_o can_v comfortable_o conclude_v that_o he_o intercee_v for_o they_o but_o believer_n and_o saint_n and_o therefore_o till_o his_o satisfaction_n be_v rely_v on_o as_o the_o ground_n of_o our_o peace_n we_o can_v look_v for_o â—o_o benefit_n by_o his_o intercession_n 3._o there_o be_v beyond_o this_o require_v the_o conviction_n and_o impression_n of_o our_o own_o unâ—uâ—â—ablenesse_n to_o keep_v up_o friendship_n and_o fellowship_n with_o god_n through_o our_o remain_a corruption_n and_o the_o prevail_a of_o tentation_n
for_o our_o righteousness_n but_o for_o thy_o great_a mercy_n that_o be_v a_o improve_n aright_o of_o christ_n intercession_n not_o to_o pray_v direct_o to_o he_o as_o a_o distinct_a party_n but_o to_o pray_v for_o mercy_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o his_o intercession_n for_o what_o be_v for_o mercy_n sake_n in_o the_o latter_a be_v for_o the_o lord_n sake_n in_o the_o former_a viz._n it_o can_v 3._o the_o right_a improvement_n of_o christ_n intercession_n have_v this_o act_n of_o faith_n that_o although_o there_o seem_v to_o be_v many_o difficulty_n and_o long_o off_o put_v yet_o faith_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o his_o intercession_n will_v continue_v its_o expectation_n of_o a_o hear_n and_o its_o look_v for_o of_o what_o the_o person_n have_v seek_v and_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o whatever_o cross_a dispensation_n thwart_o its_o expectation_n and_o whatever_o sign_n of_o anger_n appear_v in_o the_o way_n of_o its_o obtain_n it_o waiâ—s_v on_o for_o all_o that_o though_o jonah_n be_v in_o the_o belly_n of_o the_o wâ—ale_n and_o the_o weid_n wrap_v about_o his_o head_n yet_o will_v he_o look_v towards_o his_o holy_a temple_n so_o though_o a_o soul_n have_v no_o life_n nor_o sense_n no_o inward_a â—â—isting_v nor_o argument_n in_o the_o mouth_n yet_o act_v on_o christ_n intercession_n by_o faith_n it_o will_v not_o leave_v nor_o give_v over_o its_o suit_n consider_v that_o though_o it_o have_v no_o ground_n of_o expectation_n of_o good_a from_o itself_o yet_o from_o christ_n intercession_n it_o have_v which_o be_v the_o improvement_n of_o that_o heb._n 7.25_o he_o be_v able_a to_o save_v to_o the_o uttermost_a all_o that_o come_v unto_o god_n through_o he_o etc._n etc._n if_o there_o be_v never_o so_o strong_a objection_n from_o unbelief_n and_o carnal_a reason_n and_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v suggest_v you_o have_v such_o and_o sâ—ch_v difficulty_n that_o can_v be_v overcome_v lie_v in_o the_o way_n of_o your_o salvation_n and_o there_o the_o full_a or_o to_o the_o yond_o mosâ—â—_n and_o what_o be_v the_o ground_n because_o he_o ever_o live_v to_o make_v intercession_n and_o this_o be_v the_o main_a thing_n to_o be_v take_v notice_n of_o in_o improve_n of_o his_o intercession_n when_o the_o sinner_n have_v present_v his_o suit_n or_o request_n to_o god_n through_o the_o mediator_n to_o get_v his_o mind_n quiet_v on_o the_o account_n of_o christ_n intercession_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v answer_v even_o as_o a_o man_n who_o have_v a_o cause_n to_o plead_v and_o get_v a_o able_a advocate_n who_o say_v to_o he_o i_o will_v warrant_v your_o cause_n quiet_v himself_o because_o of_o his_o undertake_n so_o proportionable_o there_o be_v a_o weight_n lay_v on_o christ_n intercession_n by_o faith_n lippen_v to_o he_o which_o make_v the_o soul_n to_o be_v without_o anxiety_n and_o this_o continue_a act_n of_o faith_n do_v not_o at_o all_o foâ—ter_a sin_n but_o strengthen_v rather_o to_o oppose_v sin_n quiet_v the_o mind_n and_o make_v more_o humble_a and_o keep_v a_o tranquillity_n in_o the_o soul_n in_o band_n as_o well_o as_o in_o liberty_n because_o it_o lay_v the_o weight_n of_o its_o come_a speed_n with_o god_n not_o on_o iâ—'s_v own_o argument_n but_o on_o the_o mediator_n intercession_n for_o as_o we_o show_v from_o revel_v 8._o the_o prayerâ—_n of_o all_o saint_n go_v up_o from_o his_o censer_n the_o that_o mercy_n from_o nor_o attribut_v it_o to_o it_o be_v own_o pray_v though_o it_o do_v pray_v and_o pray_v somewhat_o serious_o but_o derive_v it_o from_o and_o attribut_v it_o to_o the_o virtue_n and_o efficacy_n of_o christ_n intercession_n and_o count_v itself_o oblige_v to_o that_o as_o the_o rise_z of_o all_o the_o person_n good_a and_o again_o by_o he_o return_v thanks_o to_o god_n for_o it_o and_o this_o be_v a_o little_a proof_n of_o improve_n christ_n intercession_n sometime_o when_o we_o want_v what_o we_o will_v have_v and_o be_v restrain_v we_o will_v improve_v all_o mean_n to_o obtain_v yet_o when_o we_o have_v obtain_v there_o be_v but_o little_a acknowledgement_n of_o he_o therein_o which_o acknowledgement_n be_v our_o duty_n insinuat_fw-la john_n 14.13_o 14._o whatsoever_o you_o ask_v in_o my_o name_n i_o will_v do_v that_o the_o father_n may_v be_v glorify_v in_o the_o son_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n we_o ought_v to_o walk_v in_o the_o use_n of_o every_o a_o favour_n through_o the_o mediation_n of_o another_o and_o shall_v forget_v he_o will_v be_v very_o ingrate_a the_o make_v use_n of_o christ_n intercession_n in_o this_o respect_n be_v the_o improve_n of_o it_o for_o the_o awake_n of_o our_o thankfulness_n and_o the_o confirm_v of_o our_o obligation_n to_o he_o if_o we_o look_v through_o our_o life_n be_v there_o any_o day_n or_o hour_n but_o we_o will_v need_v something_o and_o be_v enjoy_v something_o and_o the_o improve_n christ_n intercession_n thus_o will_v make_v the_o thought_n of_o christ_n always_o fresh_a and_o lovely_a to_o we_o but_o we_o seek_v and_o get_v and_o enjoy_v as_o if_o a_o mediator_n be_v not_o in_o heaven_n but_o as_o we_o acknowledge_v he_o in_o pray_v to_o he_o when_o we_o have_v need_n so_o when_o any_o thing_n be_v get_v we_o shall_v acknowledge_v that_o we_o have_v receive_v it_o and_o do_v enjoy_v it_o on_o the_o account_n of_o his_o intercession_n who_o obtain_v it_o for_o we_o 3_o we_o say_v that_o this_o may_v be_v illustrat_fw-la by_o similitude_n and_o there_o be_v these_o three_o whereby_o it_o may_v be_v illustrat_fw-la the_o 1._o be_v if_o we_o may_v call_v it_o a_o similitude_n the_o compare_v of_o the_o usemaking_a of_o his_o intercession_n with_o the_o usemaking_a of_o his_o satisfaction_n wherein_o there_o be_v a_o resemblance_n we_o make_v use_v of_o his_o satisfaction_n when_o we_o be_v convince_v of_o our_o natural_a sinfulness_n and_o enimity_n and_o that_o we_o can_v make_v our_o own_o peace_n ourselves_o yet_o hear_v of_o his_o satisfaction_n and_o have_v a_o offer_n of_o it_o and_o believe_v that_o his_o able_a to_o do_v our_o turn_n we_o hazard_v 〈◊〉_d that_o ground_n to_o close_o with_o god_n in_o the_o covenant_n and_o through_o the_o sense_n of_o peace_n come_v not_o for_o a_o long_a time_n yet_o we_o with_o confidence_n wait_v for_o it_o because_o the_o ground_n we_o lean_v on_o for_o it_o can_v fail_v proportionable_o to_o this_o we_o 〈◊〉_d use_v of_o christ_n intercession_n when_o under_o a_o challenge_n we_o be_v convince_v of_o a_o 〈◊〉_d and_o daâ—_n not_o approach_v to_o god_n yet_o hear_v tell_v that_o there_o be_v and_o such_o suit_n to_o god_n through_o the_o mediator_n and_o that_o we_o come_v to_o he_o in_o holy_a reverence_n we_o be_v rather_o to_o exercise_v our_o grace_n and_o have_v a_o â—ve_v downward_o in_o reflect_v on_o ourselves_o â—â—eking_v to_o be_v clear_a in_o what_o be_v call_v for_o in_o a_o worshipper_n of_o god_n then_o to_o be_v curious_o pore_v and_o pry_v into_o the_o object_n of_o our_o worship_n himself_o and_o therefore_o let_v this_o be_v well_o study_v even_o to_o be_v up_o at_o that_o wherein_o we_o be_v clear_a and_o which_o we_o do_v not_o question_v not_o make_v any_o doubt_n of_o as_o namely_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v in_o a_o compose_a frame_n of_o spirit_n in_o holy_a reverence_n and_o under_o the_o due_a impression_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n and_o then_o there_o will_v be_v the_o less_o hazard_n if_o any_o at_o all_o of_o go_v wrong_n whereas_o if_o we_o divert_v from_o this_o and_o seek_v to_o satisfy_v ourselves_o in_o the_o how_o or_o manner_n of_o up-taking_a of_o god_n we_o will_v but_o mire_n ourselves_o and_o maâ—_n the_o frame_n of_o our_o own_o spirit_n and_o bring_v ourselves_o under_o a_o incapacity_n of_o go_v about_o duty_n right_o this_o much_o we_o have_v speak_v on_o the_o three_o part_n of_o the_o use_n of_o exhortation_n wherein_o we_o allow_v a_o sober_a and_o solid_a up-taking_a of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o in_o as_o far_o as_o may_v be_v profitable_a for_o sound_v of_o our_o faith_n and_o for_o guide_v of_o our_o practice_n but_o not_o to_o satisfy_v curiosity_n for_o if_o we_o once_o go_v to_o chase_v and_o follow_v question_n upon_o question_n in_o what_o concern_v the_o doctrinal_a and_o speculative_a part_n of_o this_o doctrine_n we_o will_v run_v ourselves_o a_o ground_n and_o therefore_o god_n have_v make_v these_o thing_n wherein_o our_o duty_n necessary_o lie_v clear_a that_o there_o be_v no_o hazard_n to_o go_v wrong_n in_o single_a follow_v of_o it_o we_o will_v study_v these_o thing_n that_o be_v clear_a which_o may_v be_v another_o direction_n and_o hold_v we_o with_o and_o at_o what_o we_o be_v clear_a in_o and_o not_o suffer_v our_o mind_n to_o run_v out_o on_o either_o groundless_a or_o unprofitable_a speculation_n god_n himself_o help_v to_o the_o suitable_a practice_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o to_o he_o be_v 〈◊〉_d sermon_n lxx_o isaiah_n liii_o xii_o verse_n 12._o and_o he_o make_v intercession_n for_o the_o transgressor_n it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n that_o god_n have_v bestow_v such_o a_o mediator_n on_o sinner_n that_o he_o have_v give_v such_o a_o high_a priest_n that_o can_v be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o sinner_n infirmity_n so_o as_o to_o make_v intercession_n for_o they_o and_o o_o but_o it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n to_o be_v help_v to_o make_v right_a use_n of_o he_o when_o these_o two_o go_v together_o to_o wit_n a_o saviour_n offer_v furnish_v with_o all_o these_o office_n of_o king_n priest_n and_o prophet_n and_o a_o soul_n sanctify_v and_o guide_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o make_v use_n of_o he_o according_a to_o these_o office_n it_o be_v a_o wonderful_o and_o inconceivable_o gracious_a dispensation_n and_o it_o be_v no_o doubt_n a_o very_a valuable_a mercy_n to_o be_v heple_v to_o make_v use_n of_o this_o part_n of_o christ_n office_n to_o wit_n his_o intercession_n this_o be_v that_o whereof_o we_o have_v begin_v some_o few_o day_n since_o to_o speak_v to_o you_o and_o for_o the_o better_a clear_n of_o it_o we_o endeavour_v to_o answer_v some_o doubt_n or_o question_n that_o it_o may_v be_v have_v arisen_a and_o be_v toss_v in_o the_o mind_n of_o some_o while_o we_o have_v be_v discourse_v of_o and_o open_v up_o this_o matter_n that_o which_o we_o will_v now_o speak_v a_o little_a to_o be_v a_o subject_n of_o that_o nature_n that_o consider_v our_o shallowness_n in_o uptake_v of_o these_o thing_n we_o can_v easy_o tell_v whether_o it_o be_v better_a to_o speak_v of_o or_o to_o forbear_v the_o speak_n of_o any_o doubt_n or_o question_n lest_o one_o occasion_n â—n_o another_o and_o therefore_o most_o certain_o there_o will_v be_v much_o sobriety_n here_o and_o a_o abandon_v of_o all_o sinful_a curiosity_n least_o unseasonable_a and_o intemperate_a desire_v to_o know_v either_o what_o be_v not_o to_o be_v know_v or_o what_o we_o can_v know_v mar_v and_o obstruct_v our_o improvement_n of_o what_o we_o do_v or_o may_v know_v several_a thing_n doubt_v of_o may_v be_v move_v and_o object_v here_o but_o we_o shall_v only_o speak_v a_o word_n to_o the_o clear_n of_o these_o four_n 1_o some_o thing_n concern_v the_o object_n of_o worship_n and_o particular_o of_o prayer_n in_o general_n 2._o we_o shall_v consider_v how_o the_o mediator_n be_v the_o object_n of_o our_o prayer_n or_o how_o he_o may_v be_v pray_v unto_o 3._o a_o word_n more_o particular_o in_o reference_n to_o the_o form_n of_o some_o particular_a petition_n and_o to_o what_o seem_v most_o warrantable_a from_o the_o word_n in_o these_o 4._o we_o shall_v answer_v some_o practical_a doubt_n that_o have_v or_o may_v have_v some_o puzzle_v influence_n on_o the_o conscience_n of_o some_o christian_n but_o as_o i_o say_v we_o have_v need_v in_o speak_v and_o hear_v of_o these_o thing_n to_o be_v awe_v with_o some_o deep_a impression_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n on_o our_o heart_n lest_o we_o meddle_v carnal_o with_o matter_n of_o a_o most_o sublime_o spiritual_a and_o holy_a nature_n for_o clear_v of_o the_o first_o then_o we_o lay_v down_o these_o assertion_n the_o 1._o whereof_o be_v that_o as_o there_o be_v one_o worship_n so_o there_o be_v no_o formal_a object_n of_o worship_n but_o god_n this_o be_v clear_a because_o the_o worship_v of_o any_o with_o divine_a worship_n as_o namely_o with_o believe_v in_o they_o or_o pray_v to_o they_o suppose_v they_o to_o have_v such_o attribut_n of_o omni-science_n omni-potency_n supremacy_n etc._n etc._n as_o be_v only_o agreeable_a to_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n for_o we_o can_v pray_v to_o one_o but_o we_o must_v believe_v that_o he_o hear_v we_o and_o so_o that_o he_o be_v omni-scient_a that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o help_v we_o and_o so_o omni-poâ—entâ—_a that_o he_o be_v above_o all_o and_o so_o supreme_a as_o it_o be_v rom._n 10.14_o how_o shall_v they_o call_v on_o he_o in_o who_o they_o have_v not_o believe_v there_o can_v be_v no_o divine_a object_n of_o worship_n to_o settle_v the_o soul_n upon_o but_o where_o the_o essential_a attribut_n of_o the_o godhead_n be_v and_o it_o be_v on_o this_o ground_n that_o we_o reject_v invocation_n of_o saint_n and_o angel_n adorability_n be_v the_o essential_a property_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n as_o well_o as_o eternity_n and_o immutability_n be_v there_o can_v be_v no_o adore_v or_o worship_v of_o any_o but_o where_o there_o be_v adorability_n in_o the_o object_n that_o be_v worship_v by_o that_o worship_n and_o there_o be_v none_o capable_a of_o worship_n but_o god_n supremacy_n be_v due_a and_o essential_a to_o he_o only_o 2._o that_o though_o there_o be_v three_o person_n in_o the_o glorious_a and_o bless_a godhead_n distinct_a yet_o there_o be_v not_o three_o distinct_a object_n of_o worship_n but_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n only_o the_o father_n be_v not_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n the_o son_n
