it_o be_v the_o parable_n indeed_o seem_v more_o particular_o to_o point_n at_o our_o lord_n be_v come_v to_o judgement_n but_o the_o case_n be_v much_o the_o same_o as_o to_o those_o who_o be_v surprise_v by_o sudden_a death_n such_o as_o give_v they_o but_o little_a or_o not_o sufficient_a time_n for_o so_o great_a a_o work_n because_o such_o as_o death_n leave_v they_o judgement_n will_v certain_o find_v they_o and_o what_o a_o miserable_a confusion_n must_v they_o needs_o be_v in_o who_o be_v thus_o surprise_v either_o by_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o how_o unfit_a shall_v we_o be_v if_o the_o general_a judgement_n of_o the_o world_n shall_v come_v upon_o we_o on_o the_o sudden_a to_o meet_v that_o great_a judge_n at_o his_o come_n if_o we_o have_v make_v no_o preparation_n considerable_a provocation_n so_o that_o when_o man_n look_v into_o themselves_o and_o shall_v careful_o observe_v the_o motion_n of_o their_o own_o mind_n towards_o those_o against_o who_o they_o have_v be_v just_o exasperate_v they_o will_v see_v but_o too_o much_o reason_n to_o think_v that_o forgiveness_n be_v no_o such_o easy_a matter_n but_o our_o comfort_n in_o this_o case_n be_v that_o god_n be_v not_o as_o man_n that_o his_o way_n be_v not_o as_o our_o way_n nor_o his_o thought_n
himself_o but_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o it_o do_v not_o seem_v so_o clear_o to_o satisfy_v the_o objection_n from_o the_o disproportion_n between_o the_o fault_n and_o the_o punishment_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o clear_v if_o it_o may_v be_v this_o matter_n yet_o a_o little_a further_o by_o these_o follow_a consideration_n first_o let_v it_o be_v consider_v that_o the_o measure_n of_o penalty_n with_o respect_n to_o crime_n be_v not_o only_o nor_o always_o to_o be_v take_v from_o the_o quality_n and_o degree_n of_o the_o offence_n much_o less_o from_o the_o duration_n and_o continuance_n of_o it_o but_o from_o the_o end_n and_o reason_n of_o government_n which_o require_v such_o penalty_n as_o may_v if_o it_o be_v possible_a secure_v the_o observation_n of_o the_o law_n and_o deter_v man_n from_o the_o breach_n of_o it_o and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v evident_a because_o if_o it_o be_v once_o declare_v that_o no_o man_n shall_v suffer_v long_o for_o any_o crime_n than_o according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o the_o time_n in_o which_o it_o be_v commit_v the_o consequence_n of_o this_o will_v be_v that_o sinner_n will_v be_v better_a husband_n of_o their_o time_n and_o sin_n so_o much_o the_o fast_o that_o they_o may_v have_v the_o great_a bargain_n of_o it_o and_o may_v satisfy_v for_o their_o sin_n by_o a_o short_a punishment_n and_o it_o will_v be_v unreasonable_a likewise_o upon_o another_o account_n because_o some_o of_o the_o great_a sin_n may_v perhaps_o be_v commit_v in_o the_o short_a time_n for_o instance_n murder_n the_o act_n whereof_o may_v be_v over_o in_o a_o moment_n but_o the_o effect_n of_o it_o be_v perpetual_a for_o he_o that_o kill_v a_o man_n once_o kill_v he_o for_o ever_o the_o act_n of_o murder_n may_v be_v commit_v in_o a_o trice_n but_o the_o injury_n be_v endless_a and_o irreparable_a so_o that_o this_o objection_n of_o temporary_a crime_n be_v punish_v with_o so_o much_o long_a suffering_n be_v plain_o of_o no_o force_n beside_o that_o whoever_o consider_v how_o ineffectual_a the_o threaten_n even_o of_o eternal_a torment_n be_v to_o the_o great_a part_n of_o sinner_n will_v soon_o be_v satisfy_v that_o a_o less_o penalty_n than_o that_o of_o eternal_a suffering_n will_v to_o the_o far_o great_a part_n of_o mankind_n have_v be_v in_o all_o probability_n of_o little_a or_o no_o force_n and_o therefore_o if_o any_o thing_n more_o terrible_a than_o eternal_a vengeance_n can_v have_v be_v threaten_v to_o the_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n it_o have_v not_o be_v unreasonable_a because_o it_o will_v all_o have_v be_v little_a enough_o to_o deter_v man_n effectual_o from_o sin_n so_o that_o what_o proportion_n crime_n and_o penalty_n ought_v to_o bear_v to_o each_o other_o be_v not_o so_o proper_o a_o consideration_n of_o justice_n as_o of_o wisdom_n and_o prudence_n in_o the_o lawgiver_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o seem_v very_o plain_a because_o the_o measure_n of_o penalty_n be_v not_o take_v from_o any_o strict_a proportion_n betwixt_o crime_n and_o punishment_n but_o from_o one_o great_a end_n and_o design_n of_o government_n which_o be_v to_o secure_v the_o observation_n of_o wholesome_a and_o necessary_a law_n and_o consequent_o whatever_o penalty_n be_v proper_a and_o necessary_a to_o this_o end_n be_v not_o unjust_a and_o this_o consideration_n i_o desire_v may_v be_v more_o especial_o observe_v because_o it_o strike_v at_o the_o very_a foundation_n of_o the_o objection_n for_o if_o the_o appoint_v and_o apportion_v of_o penalty_n to_o crime_n be_v not_o so_o proper_o a_o consideration_n of_o justice_n but_o rather_o of_o prudence_n in_o the_o lawgiver_n than_o whatever_o the_o disproportion_n may_v be_v between_o temporary_a sin_n and_o eternal_a suffering_n justice_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v concern_v in_o it_o justice_z indeed_o be_v concern_v that_o the_o righteous_a and_o the_o wicked_a shall_v not_o be_v treat_v alike_o and_o far_a yet_o that_o great_a sin_n shall_v have_v a_o heavy_a punishment_n and_o that_o mighty_a sinner_n shall_v be_v mighty_o torment_v but_o all_o this_o may_v be_v consider_v and_o adjust_v in_o the_o degree_n and_o the_o intenseness_n of_o the_o suffering_n without_o make_v any_o difference_n in_o the_o duration_n of_o it_o the_o case_n then_o in_o short_a stand_v thus_o whenever_o we_o break_v the_o law_n of_o god_n we_o fall_v into_o his_o hand_n and_o lie_v at_o his_o mercy_n and_o he_o may_v without_o injustice_n inflict_v what_o punishment_n upon_o we_o he_o please_v and_o consequent_o to_o secure_v his_o law_n from_o violation_n he_o may_v beforehand_o threaten_v what_o penalty_n he_o think_v fit_a and_o necessary_a to_o deter_v man_n from_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o and_o this_o be_v not_o esteem_v unjust_a among_o man_n to_o punish_v crime_n that_o be_v commit_v in_o a_o instant_n with_o the_o perpetual_a loss_n of_o estate_n or_o liberty_n or_o life_n second_o this_o will_v yet_o appear_v more_o reasonable_a when_o we_o consider_v that_o after_o all_o he_o that_o threaten_v have_v still_o the_o power_n of_o execution_n in_o his_o own_o hand_n for_o there_o be_v this_o remarkable_a difference_n between_o promise_n and_o threaten_n that_o he_o who_o promise_v pass_v over_o a_o right_n to_o another_o and_o thereby_o stand_v oblige_v to_o he_o in_o justice_n and_o faithfulness_n to_o make_v good_a his_o promise_n and_o if_o he_o do_v not_o the_o party_n to_o who_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v be_v not_o only_o disappoint_v but_o injurious_o
