leave_v they_o to_o the_o stroke_n of_o pure_a and_o unrelenting_a justice_n yet_o he_o have_v not_o deal_v so_o with_o we_o man_n weak_a and_o sinful_a dust_n and_o ash_n lord_n what_o be_v man_n that_o thou_o be_v thus_o mindful_a of_o he_o or_o the_o son_n of_o man_n that_o thou_o so_o regard_v he_o therefore_o blessing_n and_o praise_v and_o honour_n and_o glory_n be_v to_o he_o that_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v more_o full_o hereafter_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n be_v set_v forth_o and_o there_o to_o see_v what_o character_n they_o give_v of_o he_o who_o make_v such_o expiation_n for_o by_o that_o mean_v only_o we_o be_v likely_a to_o come_v to_o any_o true_a knowledge_n and_o information_n in_o this_o great_a affair_n 1._o now_o in_o such_o scripture_n we_o find_v first_o that_o that_o person_n to_o who_o this_o expiation_n be_v there_o ascribe_v be_v call_v god_n the_o son_n of_o god_n the_o word_n the_o only_o beget_v of_o the_o father_n that_o he_o be_v there_o say_v to_o be_v with_o his_o father_n before_o the_o world_n begin_v that_o he_o lay_v the_o foundation_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o that_o the_o heaven_n be_v the_o work_n of_o his_o hand_n that_o he_o createâ—_n all_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o heaven_n and_o that_o be_v iâ—_n earth_n visible_a and_o invisible_a whether_o they_o be_v throne_n or_o dominion_n or_o principality_n oâ—_n power_n that_o description_n do_v imply_v in_o it_o omniscience_n anâ—_n omnipotence_n and_o such_o other_o attribute_n bâ—_n which_o we_o do_v though_o in_o other_o word_n describe_v the_o true_a god_n both_o to_o ourselves_o and_o to_o alâ—_n other_o but_o we_o shall_v pursue_v this_o no_o far_o here_o because_o it_o be_v not_o our_o profess_a business_n at_o present_a for_o we_o have_v only_o mention_v it_o and_o confirm_v it_o with_o some_o few_o text_n of_o scripture_n without_o quote_v the_o place_n in_o order_n to_o our_o full_a and_o clear_a explication_n of_o that_o expiation_n which_o be_v make_v by_o our_o saviour_n and_o when_o we_o come_v to_o do_v that_o we_o shall_v then_o more_o plain_o perceive_v that_o the_o deity_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o the_o expiation_n make_v by_o he_o do_v mutual_o prove_v and_o establish_v each_o other_o 2._o the_o scripture_n do_v acquaint_v we_o that_o that_o very_a person_n to_o who_o they_o do_v ascribe_v the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n be_v a_o true_a and_o real_a man._n for_o they_o give_v we_o a_o account_n of_o his_o conception_n nativity_n life_n and_o death_n they_o acquaint_v we_o with_o his_o conversation_n and_o manner_n of_o life_n his_o deity_n under_o the_o last_o and_o i_o may_v add_v that_o if_o we_o do_v with_o simplicity_n and_o sincerity_n receive_v the_o account_n of_o his_o person_n and_o character_n that_o the_o way_n and_o though_o we_o be_v but_o man_n yet_o let_v we_o in_o this_o attempt_n to_o make_v ourselves_o like_a to_o god_n as_o he_o in_o his_o incarnation_n be_v please_v to_o make_v himself_o like_a to_o we_o the_o attempt_n be_v great_a and_o generous_a and_o worthy_a the_o endeavour_n of_o our_o best_a endowment_n and_o most_o noble_a faculty_n for_o if_o we_o cheerful_o cast_v off_o our_o sin_n and_z by_o a_o constant_a and_o sincere_a practice_n of_o holiness_n do_v make_v it_o our_o business_n to_o be_v like_o our_o saviour_n holy_a and_o undefiled_a as_o he_o our_o highpriest_n be_v we_o shall_v in_o some_o sense_n lift_v ourselves_o above_o the_o earth_n even_o while_o we_o inhabit_v in_o it_o and_o though_o we_o can_v get_v up_o to_o heaven_n yet_o we_o shall_v by_o that_o mean_n bring_v heaven_n down_o into_o our_o soul_n and_o so_o shall_v in_o some_o measure_n anticipate_v our_o consummate_a happiness_n and_o since_o the_o grand_a design_n of_o our_o saviour_n humiliation_n in_o his_o incarnation_n be_v to_o engage_v we_o to_o this_o holy_a ambition_n let_v we_o have_v a_o care_n that_o we_o do_v not_o defeat_v such_o his_o design_n and_o our_o own_o great_a hope_n 2._o do_v our_o saviour_n by_o take_v our_o flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o so_o unite_n it_o to_o himself_o consecrate_v our_o nature_n to_o the_o great_a and_o noble_a purpose_n of_o holiness_n and_o mercy_n and_o do_v he_o also_o by_o so_o do_v so_o intimate_o unite_v we_o to_o himself_o that_o we_o be_v flesh_n of_o his_o flesh_n bone_n of_o his_o bone_n and_o member_n of_o his_o body_n then_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o have_v a_o more_o sacred_a and_o especial_a care_n by_o no_o mean_n to_o pollute_v that_o which_o he_o have_v so_o consecrate_v and_o therefore_o what_o st._n paul_n say_v in_o the_o case_n of_o fornication_n shall_v i_o take_v the_o member_n of_o christ_n and_o make_v they_o the_o member_n of_o a_o harlot_n god_n forbid_v that_o soul_n abhor_v and_o this_o our_o shame_n shall_v therefore_o be_v attend_v with_o the_o great_a confusion_n because_o whereas_o he_o take_v upon_o he_o our_o flesh_n that_o in_o that_o flesh_n he_o may_v work_v out_o our_o salvation_n we_o when_o we_o employ_v it_o in_o any_o sin_n do_v indeed_o employ_v it_o to_o its_o own_o utter_a ruin_n and_o damnation_n let_v we_o therefore_o have_v a_o care_n that_o we_o be_v sober_a chaste_a temperate_a because_o otherwise_o we_o bring_v a_o scandal_n upon_o our_o great_a friend_n and_o benefactor_n for_o by_o abuse_v our_o own_o body_n when_o we_o ourselves_o be_v member_n of_o his_o body_n we_o do_v by_o the_o slander_n of_o such_o our_o do_n abuse_v his_o body_n also_o and_o here_o i_o take_v myself_o to_o be_v oblige_v to_o leave_v a_o mark_n upon_o one_o practice_n too_o too_o general_a among_o christian_n and_o that_o be_v that_o when_o they_o do_v profess_o pretend_v to_o commemorate_v the_o infinite_a mercy_n of_o their_o saviour_n incarnation_n they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o do_v it_o in_o a_o way_n agreeable_a to_o his_o honour_n that_o instead_o of_o that_o they_o do_v too_o common_o do_v it_o by_o excess_n surfeiting_n and_o drunkenness_n and_o so_o when_o they_o pretend_v to_o offer_v to_o god_n for_o their_o saviour_n incarnation_n the_o praise_n of_o man_n by_o their_o manner_n of_o do_v it_o do_v render_v themselves_o more_o vile_a than_o beast_n which_o practice_n as_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o profligate_o vile_a and_o wicked_a so_o it_o have_v bring_v such_o a_o scandal_n upon_o the_o duty_n by_o such_o its_o wickedness_n that_o not_o a_o few_o and_o those_o too_o devout_a and_o zealous_a christian_n though_o their_o zeal_n and_o devotion_n do_v indeed_o want_v wisdom_n have_v leap_v over_o into_o the_o other_o extreme_a and_o have_v utter_o disallow_v any_o commemoration_n of_o the_o infinite_a blessing_n at_o all_o so_o easy_o do_v foolish_a man_n run_v into_o extreme_n on_o both_o side_n and_o leave_v the_o golden_a mean_a to_o be_v practise_v only_o by_o a_o few_o that_o be_v by_o the_o true_o wise_a 3._o do_v our_o saviour_n humble_a himself_o to_o our_o nature_n and_o condition_n in_o order_n to_o the_o work_n out_o of_o our_o salvation_n then_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o be_v like_o he_o in_o this_o very_a respect_n and_o not_o to_o disdain_v to_o stoop_v to_o our_o inferior_n when_o by_o such_o our_o condescension_n we_o may_v any_o way_n advantage_v their_o welfare_n and_o real_a interest_n and_o for_o our_o do_v so_o we_o have_v in_o he_o the_o most_o noble_a example_n that_o ever_o yet_o the_o world_n be_v make_v acquaint_v with_o for_o in_o this_o case_n we_o imitate_v the_o condescension_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o master_n nay_o when_o our_o compassion_n stoop_v low_a it_o only_o stoop_v to_o our_o fellow-creature_n those_o who_o be_v make_v of_o the_o same_o lump_n of_o clay_n with_o ourselves_o and_o those_o who_o as_o thing_n may_v fall_v out_o may_v be_v as_o helpful_a and_o useful_a to_o we_o again_o so_o that_o when_o we_o condescend_v to_o relieve_v they_o we_o do_v by_o so_o do_v teach_v they_o to_o relieve_v we_o if_o ever_o the_o same_o or_o the_o like_a misery_n with_o they_o shall_v become_v our_o own_o and_o we_o be_v as_o sure_a that_o thing_n may_v so_o fall_v out_o as_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o we_o be_v men._n now_o because_o our_o god_n do_v condescend_v to_o our_o nature_n for_o the_o relief_n of_o our_o misery_n when_o the_o condescension_n and_o the_o kindness_n be_v only_o he_o and_o when_o the_o benefit_n be_v only_o we_o shall_v not_o we_o the_o rather_o practice_v such_o a_o charitable_a condescension_n when_o by_o such_o our_o practice_n we_o do_v commiserate_v at_o least_o our_o own_o possible_a condition_n shall_v the_o son_n of_o god_n by_o take_v upon_o himself_o our_o nature_n make_v our_o condition_n his_o in_o order_n to_o his_o more_o sensible_a compassion_n of_o such_o our_o condition_n and_o shall_v not_o we_o condescend_v for_o the_o relief_n of_o those_o of_o our_o own_o kind_a which_o after_o one_o remove_n be_v for_o the_o relief_n of_o our_o self_n for_o if_o we_o be_v too_o proud_a in_o the_o case_n to_o stoop_v to_o our_o inferior_n yet_o methinks_v we_o shall_v not_o be_v too_o proud_a to_o imitate_v our_o god_n and_o if_o the_o infirmity_n of_o the_o one_o will_v not_o engage_v we_o to_o condescension_n in_o order_n to_o compassion_n yet_o one_o will_v in_o reason_n be_v apt_a to_o think_v that_o the_o example_n of_o the_o other_o may_v do_v such_o a_o thing_n we_o ought_v therefore_o in_o order_n to_o our_o exaltation_n to_o learn_v from_o he_o that_o to_o do_v any_o good_a to_o our_o calamitous_a brother_n be_v not_o to_o debase_v ourselves_o for_o our_o charity_n be_v not_o the_o less_o but_o rather_o the_o more_o noble_a for_o be_v extend_v to_o a_o thatch_a cottage_n and_o a_o personal_a visit_n to_o the_o mean_a man_n where_o it_o be_v likely_a to_o prove_v beneficial_a to_o he_o will_v always_o wear_v this_o character_n that_o it_o be_v a_o glorious_a imitation_n of_o the_o lord_n of_o glory_n who_o do_v not_o disdain_v a_o personal_a visit_n to_o the_o mean_a of_o his_o creature_n who_o he_o have_v endow_v with_o capacity_n of_o receive_v that_o his_o inestimable_a blessing_n without_o which_o they_o must_v have_v be_v for_o ever_o miserable_a 4._o do_v our_o saviour_n not_o only_o come_v to_o we_o clothe_v in_o our_o flesh_n but_o do_v he_o also_o put_v on_o the_o form_n of_o a_o servant_n in_o
