or_o the_o appetite_n of_o thirst_n or_o hunger_n or_o the_o motion_n and_o impression_n of_o outward_a object_n make_v upon_o our_o sense_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o simple_o evil_a but_o good_a in_o themselves_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v natural_a and_o intend_v by_o god_n to_o serve_v the_o good_a of_o the_o world_n and_o of_o particular_a person_n and_o the_o wise_a end_n of_o providence_n but_o as_o they_o be_v irregular_a and_o inordinate_a excessive_a and_o immoderate_a and_o destroy_v those_o end_n for_o which_o god_n intend_v they_o so_o far_o they_o be_v sinful_a and_o when_o any_o of_o those_o natural_a appetite_n or_o sensual_a inclination_n grow_v too_o strong_a and_o unruly_a and_o be_v not_o keep_v under_o the_o government_n of_o reason_n or_o within_o the_o bound_n of_o virtue_n and_o religion_n than_o they_o carry_v man_n to_o all_o looseness_n and_o wickedness_n and_o make_v they_o commit_v sin_n and_o uncleanness_n with_o greediness_n a_o good_a man_n may_v with_o st._n paul_n be_v very_o sensible_a and_o complain_v of_o this_o body_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o death_n and_o of_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n that_o be_v in_o his_o member_n of_o many_o irregular_a appetite_n and_o undue_a passion_n and_o weak_a and_o foolish_a imagination_n and_o unreasonable_a desire_n and_o inclination_n of_o too_o quick_a gust_n of_o sensual_a thing_n and_o too_o that_o be_v a_o thousand_o time_n more_o valuable_a these_o be_v imperfection_n that_o be_v in_o the_o best_a of_o we_o and_o we_o see_v that_o they_o be_v so_o and_o be_v very_o sensible_a and_o complain_v of_o they_o but_o yet_o we_o can_v whole_o avoid_v they_o but_o after_o all_o our_o thought_n and_o all_o our_o care_n they_o still_o return_v upon_o we_o and_o the_o flesh_n will_v lust_n against_o the_o spirit_n and_o there_o will_v be_v a_o perpetual_a war_n and_o struggle_v between_o they_o but_o if_o the_o spirit_n do_v so_o far_o prevail_v by_o the_o help_n of_o grace_n and_o consideration_n of_o religion_n that_o it_o do_v never_o yield_v to_o any_o wilful_a sin_n it_o shall_v then_o be_v reward_v as_o a_o conqueror_n which_o though_o it_o do_v not_o whole_o subdue_v and_o drive_v out_o that_o homebred_a enemy_n yet_o keep_v it_o always_o under_o and_o make_v it_o submit_v to_o its_o government_n and_o not_o keep_v up_o a_o open_a rebellion_n against_o it_o of_o it_o that_o it_o prevail_v upon_o our_o mind_n above_o all_o the_o power_n of_o reason_n and_o principle_n of_o religion_n and_o that_o we_o choose_v it_o above_o all_o the_o great_a thing_n of_o heaven_n and_o another_o world_n that_o religion_n offer_v to_o we_o and_o think_v it_o more_o desirable_a than_o any_o of_o those_o and_o have_v rather_o gratify_v a_o paltry_a lust_n and_o a_o foolish_a inclination_n than_o save_o our_o soul_n and_o have_v all_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n that_o we_o prefer_v it_o before_o any_o other_o good_a and_o let_v it_o have_v the_o ascendant_n in_o our_o love_n and_o affection_n above_o all_o other_o thing_n for_o it_o be_v utter_o inconsistent_a with_o any_o love_n of_o god_n or_o any_o due_a regard_n to_o he_o and_o banish_v all_o principle_n to_o our_o condemnation_n yet_o this_o be_v by_o the_o great_a favour_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o gracious_a covenant_n make_v in_o christ_n with_o mankind_n for_o otherwise_o god_n in_o rigour_n and_o justice_n may_v punish_v and_o condemn_v we_o for_o they_o the_o papist_n hold_v a_o distinction_n between_o sin_n mortal_a and_o venial_a in_o their_o own_o believe_v and_o consider_v the_o dreadful_a horror_n of_o everlasting_a damnation_n now_o the_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o repentance_n be_v as_o plain_a by_o the_o gospel_n as_o the_o power_n and_o validity_n of_o it_o we_o be_v as_o much_o assure_v that_o without_o it_o we_o shall_v be_v damn_v as_o we_o shall_v be_v save_v with_o it_o now_o this_o above_o all_o commend_v a_o medicine_n to_o we_o that_o it_o will_v cure_v we_o if_o we_o use_v it_o but_o that_o we_o shall_v die_v if_o we_o do_v not_o however_o bitter_a and_o unpalatable_a it_o may_v be_v however_o it_o may_v disorder_v but_o be_v alterable_a and_o change_v according_a to_o their_o outward_a action_n and_o the_o inward_a temper_n of_o their_o mind_n and_o when_o ever_o a_o wilful_a and_o a_o know_a sin_n break_v door_n of_o mercy_n and_o repentance_n in_o all_o other_o case_n have_v absolute_o shut_v it_o in_o this_o so_o that_o they_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a nor_o willing_a to_o enter_v in_o 2._o be_v yet_o we_o can_v have_v that_o ocular_a evidence_n and_o visible_a demonstration_n of_o they_o that_o the_o jew_n and_o pharisee_n have_v and_o therefore_o if_o any_o of_o the_o jew_n in_o our_o day_n who_o have_v swallow_v many_o of_o they_o this_o blasphemous_a account_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o miracle_n that_o he_o do_v they_o all_o by_o the_o power_n of_o magic_n which_o he_o learn_v in_o egypt_n if_o they_o do_v now_o vent_v this_o horrid_a calumny_n yet_o i_o think_v they_o be_v not_o so_o perfect_o criminal_a nor_o be_v this_o so_o high_a a_o degree_n of_o villainy_n in_o they_o as_o it_o be_v in_o their_o forefather_n who_o see_v the_o very_a miracle_n do_v before_o their_o face_n which_o be_v the_o high_a evidence_n that_o can_v be_v and_o unless_o the_o person_n be_v in_o all_o those_o circumstance_n that_o they_o be_v which_o will_v make_v he_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o inexcusable_a i_o question_v whether_o he_o can_v be_v charge_v with_o this_o sin_n and_o therefore_o as_o a_o conclusion_n from_o the_o whole_a and_o as_o the_o most_o useful_a remark_n from_o this_o subject_a i_o shall_v advise_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o that_o no_o sinner_n be_v discourage_v from_o leave_v his_o sin_n howsoever_o great_a nor_o from_o hope_n of_o the_o divine_a mercy_n upon_o any_o ungrounded_a fear_n that_o he_o be_v fall_v into_o this_o sin_n and_o so_o be_v all_o their_o evil_a way_n and_o there_o be_v no_o such_o mean_n to_o encourage_v to_o this_o as_o to_o assure_v they_o of_o the_o divine_a mercy_n and_o the_o certain_a forgiveness_n of_o all_o of_o they_o if_o they_o do_v it_o be_v this_o be_v the_o way_n to_o bring_v man_n in_o to_o their_o duty_n and_o allegiance_n when_o their_o governor_n proclaim_v a_o universal_a act_n of_o grace_n for_o what_o be_v past_a whereas_o the_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o all_o such_o hope_n make_v they_o go_v on_o and_o grow_v more_o desperate_a and_o it_o be_v by_o this_o goodness_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n hold_v forth_o to_o all_o sinner_n and_o so_o full_o display_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n that_o we_o be_v lead_v to_o repentance_n and_o therefore_o it_o ought_v by_o no_o mean_n to_o be_v lessen_v or_o diminish_v unless_o we_o will_v make_v god_n less_o good_a than_o he_o
down_o his_o government_n of_o the_o world_n if_o he_o be_v merciful_a contrary_n to_o those_o and_o shall_v not_o so_o far_o regard_v his_o own_o honour_n and_o assert_v his_o power_n and_o authority_n and_o justify_v the_o goodness_n of_o his_o law_n as_o to_o revenge_v all_o open_a affront_n against_o they_o and_o punish_v all_o great_a and_o notorious_a and_o habitual_a sinner_n virtuous_a habit_n and_o the_o frult_n of_o obedience_n and_o a_o good_a life_n all_o on_o a_o sudden_a will_v he_o now_o become_v a_o new_a man_n and_o a_o new_a creature_n in_o a_o few_o hour_n and_o from_o a_o wicked_a man_n all_o his_o life_n become_v a_o good_a one_o in_o a_o few_o day_n he_o may_v almost_o as_o well_o hope_v that_o god_n shall_v make_v he_o young_a again_o now_o he_o be_v old_a and_o turn_v his_o old_a and_o weak_a and_o die_a body_n into_o a_o young_a and_o lusty_a and_o healthful_a one_o and_o work_v those_o mighty_a miracle_n upon_o his_o body_n as_o well_o as_o his_o mind_n by_o his_o prayer_n god_n can_v do_v the_o one_o by_o a_o almighty_a irresistible_a power_n as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o if_o he_o please_v but_o it_o be_v very_o vain_a and_o groundless_a to_o depend_v upon_o the_o utmost_a of_o what_o god_n power_n be_v able_a to_o do_v in_o any_o thing_n and_o therefore_o that_o be_v never_o to_o be_v bring_v in_o for_o or_o against_o mind_n and_o he_o have_v not_o a_o due_a sense_n of_o his_o sin_n if_o he_o be_v not_o but_o there_o be_v a_o trouble_n of_o mind_n which_o take_v away_o the_o hope_n of_o mercy_n and_o throw_v man_n into_o despair_n which_o be_v common_o call_v a_o wound_a spirit_n and_o it_o be_v so_o in_o the_o high_a degree_n and_o whether_o there_o be_v any_o remedy_n for_o that_o and_o what_o it_o be_v and_o what_o advice_n be_v to_o be_v give_v in_o such_o a_o case_n and_o what_o judgement_n to_o be_v make_v of_o it_o i_o shall_v brief_o consider_v 1._o then_o this_o be_v often_o join_v with_o melancholy_a of_o body_n which_o be_v very_o hard_a to_o be_v cure_v and_o till_o it_o be_v so_o it_o be_v apt_a to_o darken_v the_o mind_n and_o bring_v a_o cloud_n over_o the_o spirit_n and_o to_o fill_v the_o soul_n with_o very_o black_a idea_n and_o imagination_n and_o to_o hinder_v it_o from_o make_v true_a judgement_n of_o itself_o or_o its_o own_o action_n and_o this_o be_v as_o pityable_a and_o aught_o as_o much_o to_o be_v remedy_v by_o physic_n and_o care_n as_o other_o disease_n of_o body_n for_o i_o have_v know_v
we_o by_o our_o baptism_n he_o who_o may_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v this_o inward_a principle_n infuse_v into_o he_o and_o stir_v with_o his_o fear_n at_o the_o time_n of_o his_o death_n yet_o for_o all_o that_o be_v but_o a_o abortive_a christian_a and_o have_v neither_o the_o new_a birth_n or_o regeneration_n nor_o the_o divine_a life_n in_o he_o 4_o the_o great_a prejudice_n against_o this_o doctrine_n be_v this_o that_o it_o be_v too_o severe_a and_o will_v tend_v to_o make_v we_o judge_v over-hard_o of_o other_o and_o to_o throw_v die_v sinner_n into_o despair_n as_o be_v in_o a_o hopeless_a state_n by_o the_o gospel_n and_o so_o hinder_v their_o repentance_n at_o that_o time_n as_o be_v insufficient_a and_o ineffectual_a to_o which_o i_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v no_o more_o severe_a than_o the_o gospel_n be_v which_o shut_v every_o wilful_a sinner_n out_o of_o heaven_n and_o pronounce_v damnation_n upon_o every_o one_o that_o do_v not_o live_v a_o good_a life_n at_o least_o after_o a_o bad_a one_o which_o be_v the_o true_a notion_n of_o repentance_n but_o we_o must_v make_v a_o new_a gospel_n if_o we_o abate_v of_o this_o and_o come_v low_a than_o be_v any_o way_n consistent_a with_o the_o divine_a wisdom_n and_o government_n and_o with_o secure_v virtue_n and_o religion_n and_o not_o open_v a_o wide_a door_n to_o looseness_n and_o licentiousness_n and_o encourage_v man_n in_o their_o sin_n rather_o than_o bring_v they_o off_o from_o they_o i_o believe_v indeed_o it_o be_v more_o out_n of_o pity_n and_o tenderness_n than_o any_o good_a ground_n in_o reason_n or_o scripture_n that_o the_o other_o doctrine_n have_v take_v place_n but_o we_o must_v not_o pervert_v the_o gospel_n out_o of_o a_o unreasonable_a tenderness_n and_o by_o pretend_v to_o be_v more_o merciful_a than_o god_n be_v or_o have_v declare_v himself_o to_o be_v and_o it_o be_v i_o doubt_v the_o great_a cruelty_n to_o our_o own_o and_o other_o soul_n thus_o to_o deceive_v they_o into_o ruin_n by_o give_v they_o hope_n contrary_a to_o the_o gospel_n and_o i_o account_v it_o the_o great_a charity_n to_o forewarn_v man_n of_o their_o danger_n and_o to_o free_v they_o from_o such_o a_o fatal_a mistake_n it_o do_v not_o so_o much_o concern_v we_o to_o judge_v other_o man_n and_o apply_v this_o doctrine_n to_o they_o as_o to_o ourselves_o god_n be_v their_o proper_a judge_n to_o who_o we_o ought_v to_o leave_v they_o and_o to_o their_o own_o master_n they_o shall_v stand_v or_o fall_v at_o the_o great_a day_n but_o it_o be_v more_o dangerous_a to_o assume_v a_o sort_n of_o power_n to_o dispense_v with_o the_o law_n of_o god_n by_o our_o pretend_a charity_n and_o to_o give_v a_o relaxation_n to_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o condition_n of_o salvation_n out_o of_o undue_a piety_n and_o in_o effect_n to_o blame_v and_o condemn_v god_n and_o think_v he_o deal_v more_o hardly_o with_o sinner_n than_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v or_o then_o we_o ourselves_o will_v do_v when_o he_o pronounce_v damnation_n upon_o they_o for_o their_o bad_a life_n and_o will_v not_o save_v they_o for_o their_o die_a repentance_n out_o of_o this_o principle_n of_o pity_n other_o have_v go_v far_o and_o deny_v the_o eternity_n of_o hellish_a torment_n and_o have_v think_v it_o too_o hard_a that_o god_n shall_v punish_v the_o sin_n of_o a_o short_a life_n with_o never-ending_a pain_n and_o have_v therefore_o think_v good_a in_o their_o great_a pity_n to_o release_v all_o the_o damn_a and_o even_o the_o devil_n themselves_o out_o of_o hell_n within_o so_o many_o year_n but_o this_o be_v to_o understand_v the_o measure_n and_o reason_n of_o the_o divine_a government_n better_o than_o god_n himself_o to_o prescribe_v new_a one_o to_o he_o contrary_a to_o what_o he_o have_v lay_v down_o to_o set_v up_o a_o court_n of_o equity_n upon_o he_o in_o our_o thought_n and_o to_o correct_v the_o fix_a rule_n and_o declare_v measure_n of_o his_o justice_n and_o mercy_n with_o some_o other_o of_o our_o own_o which_o sure_o be_v not_o to_o be_v allow_v as_o to_o the_o drive_a sinner_n into_o despair_n by_o this_o doctrine_n this_o can_v be_v say_v of_o those_o who_o have_v time_n before_o they_o to_o repent_v and_o live_v better_o if_o they_o make_v use_v of_o it_o and_o nothing_o will_v more_o strong_o excite_v they_o and_o more_o immediate_o put_v we_o believe_v any_o such_o doctrine_n which_o have_v no_o foundation_n either_o from_o the_o thief_n on_o the_o cross_n or_o from_o any_o thing_n else_o in_o scripture_n to_o be_v rely_v on_o but_o however_o severe_a the_o other_o doctrine_n be_v let_v we_o consider_v it_o be_v true_a as_o i_o shall_v full_o prove_v it_o be_v and_o i_o know_v no_o mischief_n of_o its_o severiry_n but_o this_o which_o be_v the_o plain_a consequence_n of_o it_o that_o we_o must_v not_o delay_v our_o repentance_n but_o take_v care_n to_o live_v a_o good_a life_n if_o we_o hope_v to_o go_v to_o heaven_n sect_n iii_o the_o invalidity_n of_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n show_v from_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o wise_a and_o foolish_a virgin_n have_v examine_v and_o answer_v the_o plea_n and_o pretence_n on_o behalf_n of_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n i_o shall_v show_v its_o invalidity_n and_o insufficiency_n by_o such_o plain_a and_o positive_a proof_n as_o shall_v take_v away_o that_o common_a error_n
