of_o some_o among_o many_o of_o the_o comfortable_a promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n make_v unto_o all_o repentant_a sinner_n first_o therefore_o let_v we_o consider_v that_o when_o the_o lord_n like_o a_o mighty_a monarch_n will_v set_v out_o his_o own_o stile_n as_o it_o be_v in_o fair_a text_n letter_n to_o be_v read_v of_o all_o his_o subject_n he_o thus_o proclaym_v it_o exod._n 34.6_o the_o lord_n the_o lord_n strong_a merciful_a and_o gracious_a slow_a to_o anger_n and_o abundant_a in_o goodness_n and_o truth_n 7._o reserve_v mercy_n for_o thousand_o forgive_a iniquity_n and_o transgression_n and_o sinner_n where_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o his_o stile_n consist_v of_o his_o mercy_n gratiousnes_n long_o suffer_v goodness_n &_o readiness_n to_o forgive_v the_o iniquity_n of_o repentant_a sinner_n as_o therefore_o we_o can_v offer_v a_o great_a disgrace_n to_o a_o mighty_a prince_n then_o to_o deny_v or_o call_v into_o question_n any_o part_n of_o his_o title_n or_o regal_a stile_n so_o we_o can_v more_o dishonour_v the_o prince_n of_o prince_n and_o sovereign_a king_n of_o heaven_n &_o earth_n then_o by_o doubt_v of_o or_o deny_v any_o of_o these_o his_o title_n which_o in_o his_o own_o stile_n he_o have_v attribute_v unto_o himself_o see_v then_o he_o profess_v and_o proclaym_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o gracious_a merciful_a long_a suffering_n god_n who_o be_v always_o ready_a to_o forgive_v repentant_a sinner_n when_o they_o implore_v his_o mercy_n let_v we_o not_o offer_v god_n that_o disgrace_n to_o rob_v he_o of_o any_o part_n of_o his_o glorious_a title_n nor_o deprive_v our_o soul_n of_o that_o true_a comfort_n which_o the_o lord_n by_o they_o in_o his_o infinite_a goodness_n have_v grant_v unto_o us._n §_o sect._n endeavour_v to_o forsake_v our_o sin_n and_o to_o lead_v a_o new_a life_n in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n then_o though_o we_o can_v seldom_o or_o never_o shed_v tear_n which_o be_v the_o ease_n of_o some_o of_o god_n dear_a child_n yet_o our_o repentance_n be_v true_a and_o unfeigned_a for_o in_o this_o action_n the_o break_a and_o contrite_a hart_n be_v more_o to_o be_v respect_v then_o the_o blubber_a eye_n howsoever_o most_o common_o they_o go_v together_o and_o so_o much_o concern_v the_o sign_n of_o true_a repentance_n which_o if_o after_o due_a examination_n we_o can_v find_v in_o ourselves_o we_o may_v be_v assure_v that_o we_o be_v true_o penitent_a nay_o i_o will_v say_v more_o for_o the_o comfort_n of_o all_o humble_a sinner_n if_o after_o diligent_a search_n they_o find_v not_o in_o their_o own_o sense_n and_o feel_v these_o sign_n of_o true_a repentance_n in_o they_o at_o all_o or_o at_o least_o in_o very_o small_a measure_n yet_o if_o they_o earnest_o desire_v and_o sencere_o endeavour_v to_o attain_v unto_o true_a repentance_n use_v those_o good_a mean_n ordain_v of_o god_n for_o this_o purpose_n they_o may_v assure_v themselves_o that_o they_o have_v true_o repent_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n who_o accept_v of_o the_o will_n for_o the_o deed_n and_o of_o the_o affection_n for_o the_o action_n as_o before_o i_o have_v show_v §_o sect._n 6_o and_o thus_o may_v we_o repel_v the_o tentation_n of_o satan_n and_o receive_v comfort_n unto_o our_o own_o soul_n when_o he_o labour_v to_o persuade_v we_o that_o our_o repentance_n be_v not_o true_a and_o unfeigned_a ourrepentance_n that_o the_o assurance_n of_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n depend_v not_o on_o the_o dignity_n of_o ourrepentance_n but_o false_a and_o hypocritical_a but_o if_o the_o tempter_n can_v thus_o prevail_v in_o the_o next_o place_n he_o will_v tell_v we_o that_o our_o repentance_n though_o if_o be_v true_a yet_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a neither_o be_v there_o any_o proportion_n between_o our_o small_a repentance_n and_o our_o great_a sin_n as_o god_n justice_n do_v require_v to_o which_o we_o must_v answer_n that_o the_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n depend_v not_o upon_o the_o dignity_n or_o quantity_n of_o our_o repentance_n but_o upon_o the_o righteousness_n and_o full_a satisfaction_n of_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n neither_o do_v we_o repent_v to_o the_o end_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v in_o whole_a or_o in_o part_n satisfy_v for_o our_o sin_n for_o though_o it_o can_v be_v imagine_v that_o the_o whole_a substance_n of_o our_o body_n shall_v be_v resolve_v into_o tear_n yet_o will_v they_o not_o all_o of_o they_o satisfy_v and_o appease_v god_n wrath_n for_o one_o breach_n of_o any_o of_o his_o commandment_n neither_o be_v it_o the_o water_n of_o our_o eye_n no_o nor_o yet_o the_o blood_n of_o our_o heart_n wound_v deep_o with_o sorrow_n which_o will_v purge_v we_o from_o our_o sin_n either_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o guilt_n punishment_n or_o corruption_n themselves_o but_o it_o be_v the_o water_n and_o blood_n which_o flow_v from_o our_o crucify_a lord_n which_o cleanse_v our_o guilty_a soul_n from_o the_o filchie_a spot_n of_o sin_n be_v apply_v unto_o we_o by_o a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n and_o therefore_o let_v we_o not_o with_o the_o popish_a rabble_n foolish_o imagine_v that_o we_o can_v by_o our_o repentance_n meritt_v any_o thing_n at_o god_n hand_n or_o satisfy_v his_o justice_n for_o our_o sin_n for_o so_o shall_v we_o rob_v our_o saviour_n christ_n of_o the_o glory_n due_a unto_o he_o for_o our_o salvation_n and_o spoil_v our_o soul_n of_o all_o true_a comfort_n but_o let_v we_o repent_v and_o unfeigned_o turn_v unto_o god_n in_o obedience_n to_o his_o commandment_n and_o to_o the_o end_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v approve_v our_o faith_n before_o god_n the_o world_n &_o our_o own_o conscience_n to_o be_v true_a by_o this_o lively_a and_o undoubted_a fruit_n thereof_o for_o it_o can_v be_v if_o we_o have_v attain_a to_o the_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n and_o the_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n for_o the_o merit_n and_o zeal_n will_v make_v we_o abhor_v sin_n whereby_o our_o gracious_a god_n be_v dishonour_v and_o love_v righteousness_n whereby_o his_o holy_a name_n be_v glorify_v and_o even_o sorrow_n with_o bitter_a grief_n when_o as_o we_o be_v overtake_v with_o our_o corruption_n and_o fall_v into_o sin_n see_v our_o saviour_n christ_n have_v not_o spare_v his_o precious_a blood_n to_o purge_v we_o when_o as_o nothing_o else_o can_v make_v we_o clean_o see_v therefore_o our_o repentance_n do_v not_o satisfy_v god_n justice_n nor_o purge_v away_o any_o sin_n let_v we_o not_o be_v persuade_v by_o satan_n that_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n and_o the_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n depend_v on_o the_o dignity_n or_o quantity_n of_o our_o repentance_n but_o let_v we_o assure_v ourselves_o

word_n and_o the_o use_n of_o the_o sacrament_n which_o he_o make_v effectual_a by_o the_o inward_a operation_n of_o his_o spirit_n for_o the_o beget_n and_o confirm_v of_o our_o faith_n and_o stir_v we_o up_o to_o repentance_n which_o be_v wrought_v in_o we_o we_o may_v as_o certain_o be_v persuade_v that_o the_o general_a promise_n belong_v unto_o we_o as_o if_o they_o be_v make_v unto_o we_o particular_o and_o by_o name_n repentance_n §._o sect._n 8._o that_o our_o assurance_n of_o election_n depend_v not_o upon_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o repentance_n six_o they_o object_n that_o we_o can_v be_v assure_v of_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o repentance_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v have_v no_o certain_a assurance_n of_o our_o election_n and_o mutable_a variety_n in_o our_o faith_n which_o make_v it_o more_o changeable_a than_o the_o moon_n which_o one_o while_n shine_v with_o full_a bringhtnesse_n and_o in_o small_a distance_n of_o time_n can_v be_v discern_v and_o to_o this_o end_n let_v we_o know_v first_o that_o though_o in_o ourselves_o we_o be_v not_o worthy_a of_o the_o least_o of_o god_n mercy_n yet_o our_o unworthines_n make_v we_o not_o uncapable_a of_o the_o great_a for_o all_o god_n benefit_n be_v his_o free_a gift_n which_o he_o promise_v and_o bestow_v without_o any_o respect_n of_o our_o worthiness_n or_o desert_n of_o his_o mere_a grace_n and_o undeserued_a love_n and_o therefore_o as_o when_o we_o be_v most_o worthy_a in_o our_o own_o conceit_n there_o be_v no_o reason_n why_o we_o shall_v presume_v the_o more_o so_o when_o we_o find_v ourselves_o unworthy_a there_o be_v no_o cause_n why_o we_o shall_v hope_v the_o less_o or_o be_v more_o weak_o assure_v of_o god_n promise_n for_o as_o they_o be_v world_n they_o ascribe_v all_o to_o outward_a circumstance_n inferior_a mean_n and_o subordinate_a cause_n as_o though_o god_n have_v give_v over_o the_o government_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o have_v commit_v the_o rule_n of_o the_o stern_a to_o blind_a fortune_n now_o whence_o can_v this_o exceed_a difference_n proceed_v that_o they_o shall_v altogether_o aim_v at_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o these_o whole_o at_o the_o praise_n pleasure_n &_o profit_n of_o man_n that_o they_o shall_v always_o ascribe_v the_o government_n and_o dispose_n of_o all_o thing_n to_o the_o wise_a providence_n which_o only_o beseem_v the_o glorious_a king_n and_o sovereign_a commander_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n for_o they_o speak_v in_o the_o same_o manner_n and_o enjoin_v the_o like_a obedience_n to_o but_o even_o concupiscence_n and_o lust_n now_o who_o can_v make_v law_n for_o the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n or_o though_o he_o shall_v be_v so_o fond_a to_o make_v they_o who_o can_v either_o
