consider_v then_o this_o you_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n and_o see_v in_o how_o tickelysh_a state_n they_o do_v stand_v which_o have_v give_v occasion_n and_o in_o what_o great_a danger_n they_o be_v to_o be_v bring_v to_o to_o commit_v the_o same_o or_o like_o sin_n afterward_o therefore_o if_o any_o man_n be_v sure_a to_o keep_v his_o good_a name_n then_o must_v he_o keep_v himself_o from_o all_o such_o occasion_n as_o in_o any_o wise_n may_v impair_v or_o hinder_v it_o and_o this_o much_o for_o this_o second_o step_n whereby_o we_o rise_v to_o a_o good_a name_n thus_o we_o have_v hear_v of_o two_o degree_n toward_o a_o good_a name_n in_o the_o avoid_n of_o evil_a and_o the_o occasion_n thereof_o and_o these_o in_o deed_n have_v a_o great_a force_n to_o stay_v a_o evil_a name_n but_o sure_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o build_v up_o a_o good_a name_n &_o credit_n among_o man_n to_o these_o therefore_o there_o must_v be_v add_v a_o three_o thing_n which_o have_v most_o special_a force_n to_o this_o purpose_n and_o that_o be_v that_o we_o be_v plentiful_a in_o good_a work_n this_o do_v our_o saviour_n charge_v we_o to_o be_v careful_a of_o when_o he_o say_v let_v your_o light_n so_o shine_v before_o man_n that_o they_o may_v see_v your_o good_a work_n many_o man_n repine_v at_o the_o good_a report_n of_o a_o other_o man_n and_o they_o be_v great_o greeve_v because_o they_o themselves_o be_v not_o in_o the_o like_a or_o some_o great_a credit_n but_o alas_o they_o shall_v rather_o be_v greeve_v at_o themselves_o because_o the_o fault_n be_v in_o they_o for_o they_o regard_v not_o to_o do_v good_a they_o be_v careless_a of_o good_a work_n and_o therefore_o the_o lord_n be_v careless_a of_o they_o and_o their_o credit_n well_o then_o he_o that_o wylbe_n commend_v must_v do_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v commendable_a he_o must_v do_v good_a work_n yea_o he_o must_v do_v good_a and_o pursue_v it_o yet_o we_o must_v know_v that_o it_o be_v not_o one_o good_a work_n nor_o two_o nor_o three_o that_o can_v gain_v we_o a_o good_a name_n in_o deed_n but_o it_o be_v require_v of_o we_o that_o we_o be_v scotfree_a in_o well_o do_v and_o continual_o give_v to_o every_o good_a work_n for_o as_o precious_a ointment_n whereunto_o a_o good_a name_n be_v lykon_v be_v make_v of_o many_o and_o most_o excellent_a simples_n so_o a_o good_a name_n can_v be_v get_v but_o by_o many_o and_o most_o excellent_a virtue_n now_o when_o we_o feel_v ourselves_o affect_v to_o good_a and_o to_o all_o manner_n of_o goodness_n then_o be_v we_o wary_o to_o see_v to_o two_o thing_n first_o that_o all_o our_o work_n be_v do_v with_o a_o simple_a and_o sincere_a affection_n second_o that_o they_o be_v do_v with_o good_a discretion_n for_o when_o a_o thing_n be_v do_v undiscreete_o and_o without_o advice_n it_o lose_v the_o grace_n and_o beauty_n of_o the_o deed_n and_o therefore_o though_o the_o thing_n be_v good_a yet_o no_o great_a praise_n do_v come_v of_o it_o because_o it_o be_v not_o do_v with_o good_a discretion_n likewise_o when_o man_n do_v thing_n with_o sinister_a affection_n and_o to_o some_o other_o end_n then_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n they_o do_v common_o loose_v the_o price_n of_o their_o do_n and_o hereof_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o many_o man_n which_o do_v good_a work_n to_o merit_v by_o they_o or_o to_o win_v the_o favour_n of_o their_o superior_n or_o to_o be_v of_o good_a report_n among_o the_o people_n or_o to_o some_o such_o other_o end_n when_o i_o say_v man_n do_v thing_n to_o this_o end_n the_o lord_n punish_v they_o with_o the_o contrary_n and_o in_o stead_n of_o deserve_a glory_n he_o pour_v confusion_n upon_o they_o in_o stead_n of_o honour_n he_o geve_v contempt_n and_o in_o stead_n of_o riches_n beggary_n and_o albeit_o man_n may_v pretend_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o face_n out_o their_o wickedness_n with_o a_o fresh_a colour_n yet_o the_o lord_n will_v bring_v their_o wickedness_n to_o light_v and_o true_o it_o be_v marvellous_a to_o see_v how_o the_o lord_n lay_v folly_n upon_o such_o man_n so_o that_o although_o that_o in_o their_o wisdom_n they_o think_v to_o blear_v the_o eye_n of_o all_o man_n yet_o the_o simple_a sort_n do_v behold_v their_o foolish_a shyfte_n to_o their_o discredit_n therefore_o when_o thou_o have_v do_v well_o and_o yet_o be_v ill_o report_v off_o do_v not_o know_v that_o he_o have_v cause_v we_o to_o be_v thus_o evil_o speak_v off_o first_o to_o correct_v and_o second_o to_o try_v us._n for_o when_o the_o lord_n do_v see_v we_o like_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n seek_v reward_n than_o he_o do_v punish_v we_o with_o the_o loss_n of_o our_o labour_n and_o with_o shame_n among_o man_n to_o see_v if_o thereby_o he_o can_v bring_v we_o to_o the_o fight_n of_o sin_n which_o before_o we_o neither_o will_v nor_o can_v see_v and_o again_o when_o we_o have_v thus_o do_v he_o do_v try_v we_o whether_o there_o be_v any_o goodness_n in_o our_o heart_n which_o may_v move_v we_o to_o continue_v in_o well_o do_v notwithstanding_o we_o be_v evyll_n speak_v off_o here_o than_o we_o see_v what_o fruit_n we_o must_v make_v of_o such_o report_n namely_o they_o must_v first_o bring_v we_o to_o a_o sight_n and_o feel_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o second_o they_o must_v cause_v we_o with_o great_a uprightness_n to_o continue_v in_o well_o do_v true_a it_o be_v that_o a_o man_n may_v be_v accuse_v to_o have_v have_v this_o or_o that_o purpose_n in_o his_o do_n although_o he_o have_v do_v the_o thing_n in_o the_o simplicity_n of_o his_o hart_n but_o when_o a_o man_n through_o examination_n do_v find_v his_o hart_n upright_o than_o he_o receyve_v great_a comfort_n by_o it_o than_o he_o may_v commend_v he_o self_n unto_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o cause_n into_o his_o hand_n for_o the_o lord_n maintain_v good_a tongue_n and_o heart_n but_o he_o will_v cut_v out_o the_o tongue_n that_o speak_v lie_n he_o will_v cause_v the_o ryghteousnesse_n of_o the_o ryghteous_a to_o shine_v as_o the_o noon_n day_n and_o as_o the_o sun_n after_o a_o cloud_n but_o the_o wicked_a be_v cover_v with_o their_o own_o confusion_n as_o with_o a_o cloak_n this_o shall_v the_o godly_a see_v and_o rejoice_v therein_o but_o the_o mouth_n of_o the_o wicked_a be_v stop_v thus_o we_o have_v run_v through_o these_o thing_n whereby_o a_o good_a name_n may_v be_v get_v and_o not_o only_o that_o but_o whereby_o a_o man_n may_v be_v preserve_v in_o a_o
security_n which_o bring_v neglect_n and_o contempt_n of_o all_o good_a mean_n whereby_o they_o shall_v grow_v up_o in_o godliness_n on_o the_o left_a hand_n other_o offend_v be_v never_o please_v nor_o contend_v with_o the_o they_o have_v in_o deed_n forget_v and_o light_o esteem_v that_o they_o have_v and_o still_o desire_v new_a these_o man_n beside_o that_o they_o be_v unthankeful_a do_v also_o murmur_v and_o grudge_v against_o god_n and_o be_v never_o please_v with_o he_o between_o these_o two_o the_o child_n of_o god_n hold_v a_o middle_n and_o even_a course_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v see_v these_o thing_n in_o they_o first_o a_o sight_n &_o a_o acknowledge_v of_o the_o want_n which_o do_v move_v they_o as_o s._n peter_n say_v like_o new_a bear_v babe_n to_o desire_v the_o sweet_a and_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n that_o thereby_o the_o grace_n they_o have_v may_v be_v increase_v and_o their_o other_o want_n may_v be_v supply_v and_o so_o far_o be_v they_o from_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o pride_n that_o they_o rejoice_v when_o their_o pripe_n may_v be_v pull_v down_o or_o their_o haughtiness_n abate_v either_o by_o some_o sharp_a rebuke_n or_o by_o some_o fearful_a threaten_n or_o by_o some_o moderate_a correction_n from_o the_o lord_n for_o they_o know_v if_o it_o be_v needful_a for_o s._n paul_n to_o be_v buffit_v and_o that_o by_o the_o minister_n of_o satan_n to_o the_o end_n that_o his_o pride_n may_v be_v beat_v down_o than_o it_o be_v much_o more_o needful_a for_o they_o after_o more_o way_n so_o to_o be_v humble_v beside_o that_o they_o do_v not_o only_o desire_v the_o word_n but_o they_o also_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n until_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o work_v further_o in_o they_o thereby_o and_o this_o wait_v be_v as_o earnest_a as_o they_o who_o have_v watch_v all_o the_o night_n do_v wait_n and_o look_v for_o the_o dawn_n of_o the_o day_n second_o as_o they_o see_v their_o want_n so_o also_o they_o see_v that_o grace_n they_o have_v receive_v and_o for_o that_o time_n well_o appayde_v &_o content_v therewith_o and_o therefore_o as_o their_o want_n do_v humble_a they_o so_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n do_v comfort_v they_o and_o as_o their_o want_n do_v call_v upon_o they_o &_o cause_v they_o to_o seek_v more_o so_o that_o they_o have_v do_v provoke_v they_o to_o be_v thankful_a for_o that_o they_o have_v receive_v see_v then_o a_o quite_o contrary_a course_n of_o the_o wicked_a &_o those_o that_o do_v of_o sincerity_n worship_n god_n i_o say_v how_o contrary_a the_o grace_n &_o gift_n of_o god_n do_v work_n in_o they_o &_o therefore_o from_o the_o consideration_n hereof_o we_o may_v well_o draw_v a_o four_o rule_n whereby_o to_o make_v trial_n &_o examination_n of_o our_o own_o self_n therefore_o to_o conclude_v this_o point_n in_o a_o word_n when_o a_o man_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v be_v enlighten_v unto_o a_o certain_a &_o sufficient_a knowledge_n of_o god_n will_n when_o he_o find_v his_o affection_n chief_o &_o above_o all_o other_o thing_n set_v upon_o god_n when_o he_o find_v a_o pure_a &_o sincere_a love_n of_o god_n in_o his_o hart_n not_o for_o wage_n work_v in_o he_o in_o a_o more_o effectual_a manner_n &_o therefore_o it_o shall_v never_o be_v take_v from_o he_o but_o what_o then_o may_v such_o man_n cast_v off_o all_o care_n no_o for_o unto_o they_o do_v s._n paul_n give_v this_o charge_n for_o though_o that_o the_o spirit_n can_v never_o be_v take_v utter_o from_o they_o yet_o doubtless_o if_o they_o wax_v proud_a if_o they_o grow_v to_o the_o choke_n &_o quench_v the_o spirit_n in_o they_o the_o spirit_n itself_o be_v not_o take_v from_o they_o nay_o christ_n do_v still_o continue_v in_o their_o heart_n yet_o for_o want_v of_o godly_a grace_n they_o be_v as_o it_o be_v without_o fashion_n &_o form_n so_o that_o the_o apostle_n do_v as_o it_o be_v travel_v again_o until_o christ_n be_v fashion_v a_o new_a in_o they_o david_n also_o upon_o the_o commit_n of_o his_o sin_n be_v bring_v into_o the_o like_a case_n &_o therefore_o in_o the._n 51._o psal._n he_o pray_v that_o god_n will_v create_v in_o he_o a_o new_a spirit_n what_o be_v the_o spirit_n quite_o go_v no_o for_o by_o and_o by_o in_o the_o same_o psalm_n he_o pray_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o take_v away_o his_o holy_a spirit_n from_o he_o how_o can_v these_o two_o stand_v together_o first_o to_o pray_v that_o a_o new_a spirit_n may_v be_v create_v in_o he_o and_z that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n may_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o sure_o the_o spirit_n itself_o be_v still_o in_o he_o &_o therefore_o he_o pray_v that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o but_o the_o grace_n &_o gracious_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n they_o be_v dead_a a_o time_n and_o the_o other_o last_v for_o ever_o now_o if_o we_o require_v a_o further_a trial_n whereby_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o last_v but_o for_o a_o time_n and_o that_o which_o last_v for_o ever_o with_o we_o then_o let_v we_o mark_v those_o rule_n which_o put_v a_o plain_a difference_n between_o they_o first_o we_o must_v mark_v the_o enlightening_n and_o insight_n we_o have_v into_o the_o word_n of_o god_n certain_a it_o be_v that_o both_o the_o godly_a and_o wicked_a be_v enlighten_v but_o the_o inlyghtning_n of_o the_o godly_a be_v one_o and_o the_o insight_n of_o the_o wicked_a be_v a_o other_o for_o the_o knowledge_n and_o insight_n which_o the_o godly_a have_v receive_v be_v certain_a and_o distinct_a therefore_o in_o particular_a thing_n they_o be_v able_a to_o apply_v the_o threaten_n of_o god_n judgement_n to_o the_o humble_v of_o themselves_o and_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n to_o comfort_v themselves_o again_o their_o knowledge_n be_v sufficient_a to_o direct_v they_o general_o and_o particular_o and_o last_o of_o all_o it_o never_o fail_v they_o but_o direct_v they_o to_o the_o end_n but_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o wicked_a be_v not_o so_o for_o it_o be_v a_o confuse_a and_o a_o general_a knowledge_n of_o the_o threaten_n and_o of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n yet_o can_v they_o not_o make_v particular_a use_n of_o the_o same_o their_o knowledge_n be_v not_o sufficient_a nor_o able_a to_o direct_v they_o in_o particular_n and_o therefore_o do_v leave_v they_o in_o the_o end_n therefore_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o godly_a for_o the_o clearness_n the_o certainty_n and_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o it_o be_v compare_v to_o the_o sun_n so_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o wicked_a be_v compare_v to_o lyghtning_n which_o do_v not_o give_v any_o light_n it_o do_v not_o continue_v any_o time_n and_o when_o it_o be_v go_v man_n be_v worse_o than_o they_o be_v before_o so_o do_v it_o fall_v out_o with_o the_o wicked_a for_o beside_o that_o their_o knowledge_n cloth_n soon_o vanish_v there_o be_v in_o they_o great_a and_o more_o dangerous_a darkness_n than_o there_o be_v before_o therein_o than_o we_o see_v our_o plain_n and_o manifest_a note_n of_o difference_n second_o we_o must_v come_v to_o our_o affection_n certain_a it_o be_v that_o the_o wicked_a do_v desire_v the_o help_n of_o god_n but_o look_v to_o the_o cause_n &_o it_o will_v show_v a_o difference_n between_o the_o wicked_a and_o the_o godly_a the_o wicked_a do_v only_o seek_v help_n because_o of_o some_o extremity_n which_o they_o suffer_v they_o only_a desire_n to_o be_v in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n because_o they_o will_v be_v free_v from_o grief_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v common_a with_o they_o to_o say_v oh_o that_o i_o be_v out_o of_o this_o pain_n oh_o that_o this_o sorrow_n be_v take_v from_o i_o by_o which_o speech_n they_o show_v that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v at_o rest_n or_o at_o their_o ease_n they_o will_v little_a weigh_v of_o the_o help_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n but_o the_o godly_a find_v such_o sweetness_n in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n that_o for_o the_o desire_n thereof_o they_o can_v be_v content_a to_o suffer_v much_o and_o endure_v the_o cross_n patient_o so_o that_o at_o the_o last_o they_o may_v enjoy_v god_n favour_n not_o the_o godly_a only_o but_o the_o wicked_a also_o be_v greeve_v when_o they_o have_v sin_v but_o the_o wicked_a do_v therefore_o sorrow_n because_o their_o sin_n have_v or_o will_v bring_v some_o punishment_n upon_o they_o and_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n because_o they_o have_v offend_v god_n and_o give_v he_o occasion_n to_o draw_v his_o favour_n from_o they_o therefore_o his_o correction_n do_v they_o bear_v patient_o but_o the_o remembrance_n of_o their_o sin_n that_o touch_v they_o still_o at_o the_o quick_a and_o so_o then_o in_o their_o joy_n and_o in_o their_o sorrow_n may_v appear_v a_o second_o difference_n the_o third_o difference_n be_v in_o love_n for_o though_o both_o of_o they_o love_n god_n yet_o it_o be_v after_o a_o diverse_a manner_n the_o one_o of_o sincerity_n the_o other_o of_o wage_n a_o
