use_v as_o a_o mean_a whereby_o of_o his_o mercy_n it_o may_v please_v he_o to_o work_v in_o i_o and_o many_o other_o true_a hearty_a repentance_n for_o our_o sin_n to_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o name_n thus_o fare_v thou_o well_o in_o the_o lord_n the_o xâ—_n of_o july_n 1553._o ¶_o a_o fruitful_a sermon_n of_o repentance_n make_v by_o the_o constant_a martyr_n of_o christ_n m._n john_n bradford_n 1553._o the_o life_n we_o have_v at_o this_o present_a be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n in_o who_o we_o live_v move_v and_o be_v and_o therefore_o he_o be_v call_v jehova_n for_o the_o which_o labour_n can_v be_v better_o bestow_v then_o with_o the_o baptist_n christ_n jesus_n and_o his_o apostle_n to_o harp_n on_o this_o string_n which_o of_o all_o other_o be_v most_o necessary_a and_o that_o in_o these_o day_n most_o special_o what_o string_n be_v that_o say_v one_o forsooth_o brother_n the_o string_n of_o repentance_n the_o which_o christ_n our_o saviour_n do_v use_v first_o in_o his_o ministry_n and_o as_o his_o minister_n at_o this_o present_a i_o will_v use_v unto_o you_o all_o repent_v for_o the_o kingdom_n 4._o of_o heaven_n be_v at_o hand_n this_o sentence_n thus_o pronounce_v &_o preach_v by_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n as_o it_o do_v command_v we_o to_o repent_v so_o to_o the_o do_v of_o the_o same_o it_o show_v we_o a_o sufficient_a cause_n to_o stir_v join_v to_o the_o commandment_n the_o cause_n say_v for_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n be_v at_o haud_fw-la we_o may_v learn_v that_o of_o the_o kiugdome_n of_o heaven_n none_o to_o who_o the_o ministry_n of_o preach_v do_v appertain_v can_v be_v partaker_n but_o such_o as_o repent_v &_o do_v penance_n therefore_o dear_o belove_v if_o you_o regard_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n in_o that_o you_o can_v enter_v therein_o except_o you_o repent_v i_o beseech_v you_o all_o of_o every_o estate_n as_o you_o will_v your_o own_o weal_n to_o repent_v and_o do_v penance_n the_o which_o thing_n repentance_n or_o penante_n be_v no_o english_a word_n but_o we_o borrow_v it_o of_o the_o latinist_n to_o who_o penance_n be_v a_o forthinking_a in_o english_a in_o greek_a a_o be_v wise_a afterwards_o in_o hebrew_n a_o conversion_n or_o turn_n the_o which_o conversion_n or_o turn_n in_o that_o it_o can_v be_v true_a &_o hearty_a unto_o god_n especial_o without_o some_o good_a hope_n or_o trust_v of_o pardon_n for_o that_o which_o be_v already_o do_v and_o pass_v i_o may_v well_o in_o this_o sort_n define_v it_o namely_o that_o penance_n be_v a_o sorow_v or_o forthink_v of_o our_o sin_n past_a a_o earnest_a purpose_n to_o amend_v or_o turn_v to_o god_n with_o a_o trust_n of_o pardon_n this_o definition_n may_v be_v divide_v into_o three_o part_n first_o a_o sorow_v for_o our_o sin_n second_o a_o trust_n of_o pardon_n which_o otherwise_o may_v be_v call_v a_o persuasion_n of_o god_n mercy_n by_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n for_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o three_o a_o purpose_n to_o amend_v or_o conversion_n to_o a_o new_a life_n the_o which_o three_o or_o last_o part_n can_v be_v call_v proper_o a_o part_n for_o it_o be_v but_o a_o effect_n of_o penance_n as_o towards_o the_o end_n you_o shall_v see_v by_o god_n grace_n but_o least_o such_o as_o seek_v for_o occasion_n to_o speak_v evil_n shall_v have_v any_o occasion_n though_o they_o tarry_v not_o out_o the_o end_n of_o this_o sermon_n i_o therefore_o divide_v penauce_n into_o the_o three_o foresay_a part_n of_o sorrow_v for_o our_o sin_v of_o good_a hope_n or_o trust_v of_o deed_n and_o such_o like_a thing_n but_o also_o from_o that_o which_o the_o more_o learned_a have_v declare_v to_o consist_v of_o three_o part_n namely_o contrition_n confession_n &_o satisfaction_n contrition_n they_o call_v a_o just_a &_o a_o full_a sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n for_o this_o word_n just_a &_o full_a in_o one_o of_o the_o difference_n between_o contrition_n and_o attrition_n confession_n they_o call_v a_o number_n of_o all_o their_o sin_n in_o the_o ear_n of_o their_o ghostly_a father_n for_o as_o say_v they_o a_o judge_n can_v absolve_v without_o knowledge_n of_o the_o cause_n or_o matter_n so_o can_v the_o priest_n or_o ghostly_a father_n absolve_v from_o other_o sin_n than_o those_o which_o he_o do_v hear_v satisfaction_n they_o calamende_v make_v unto_o god_n if_o a_o man_n repent_v not_o until_o he_o have_v a_o just_a and_o full_a sorrow_n for_o his_o sin_n dear_o belove_v when_o shall_v he_o repent_v for_o in_o asmuch_o as_o hell_n fire_n &_o the_o punishment_n of_o the_o devil_n be_v a_o just_a punishment_n for_o sin_v in_o as_o much_o as_o in_o all_o sin_v there_o be_v a_o contempt_n of_o god_n which_o be_v all_o goodness_n and_o therefore_o there_o be_v acontempt_n desert_n or_o all_o illness_n alas_o who_o can_v bear_v or_o feel_v this_o just_a sorrow_n this_o full_a sorrow_n for_o our_o sin_n this_o their_o contrition_n which_o they_o do_v so_o discern_v from_o their_o attrition_n shall_v not_o man_n by_o this_o doctrine_n rather_o despair_v then_o come_v by_o repentance_n if_o a_o man_n repent_v not_o until_o he_o have_v make_v confession_n of_o all_o his_o sin_n in_o the_o ear_n of_o his_o ghostly_a father_n if_o a_o man_n can_v have_v absolution_n of_o his_o sin_n until_o his_o sin_n be_v tell_v by_o tale_n and_o number_n in_o the_o priest_n ear_n in_o that_o as_o david_n saâ—â—h_v none_o can_v understand_v much_o less_o then_o utter_v all_o his_o sin_n delicta_fw-la quis_fw-la intelliget_fw-la who_o can_v understand_v his_o sin_n in_o that_o david_n of_o himself_o complain_v else_o where_o how_o that_o his_o sin_n be_v overflow_v his_o head_n &_o as_o a_o heavy_a burden_n do_v oppress_v he_o alas_o shall_v not_o a_o man_n by_o this_o doctrine_n be_v utter_o drive_v from_o repentance_n though_o they_o have_v go_v about_o something_o to_o make_v plaster_n for_o their_o sore_n of_o confession_n or_o attrition_n to_o assuage_v this_o gear_n bid_v a_o man_n to_o hope_v well_o of_o his_o contrition_n though_o it_o be_v not_o so_o full_a as_o be_v require_v and_o of_o his_o confession_n though_o he_o have_v a_o servant_n to_o we_o all_o he_o be_v immortal_a will_v become_v mortal_a miserable_a and_o fast_o of_o all_o god_n curse_n yea_o even_o of_o hell_n it_o seife_z for_o we_o his_o blood_n be_v and_o look_v on_o institute_v the_o three_o and_o last_o thing_n namely_o wherefore_o the_o lord_n do_v institute_v this_o sacrament_n our_o nature_n be_v very_o oblivious_a of_o god_n and_o of_o of_o the_o new_a testament_n to_o which_o testament_n be_v proper_o attribute_v on_o god_n behalf_n oblivion_n or_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n first_o i_o say_v therefore_o the_o supper_n be_v we_o in_o he_o oh_o happy_a eye_n that_o see_v these_o thing_n and_o most_o happy_a heart_n that_o feel_v they_o my_o dear_a brethren_n let_v we_o pray_v unto_o the_o lord_n to_o open_v our_o eye_n
