a_o good_a justice_n of_o peace_n in_o search_v for_o traitor_n or_o seminary_n priest_n he_o seek_v not_o superficial_o but_o most_o exact_o and_o leave_v never_o a_o corner_n unsought_a and_o he_o think_v great_a sin_n to_o be_v infinite_a and_o little_a sin_n great_a and_o judge_v no_o sin_n so_o small_a but_o that_o it_o deserve_v the_o anger_n of_o god_n &_o therefore_o he_o wonder_v at_o parish_n then_o how_o do_v that_o man_n hazard_v his_o own_o soul_n who_o be_v make_v overseer_n &_o searcher_n of_o his_o heart_n find_v nothing_o in_o it_o to_o present_v to_o the_o lord_n for_o so_o it_o may_v confess_v the_o secret_a wickedness_n of_o it_o for_o the_o papist_n do_v not_o think_v we_o protestant_n great_a enemy_n to_o their_o superstition_n than_o the_o inward_a corruption_n of_o our_o heart_n be_v to_o our_o salvation_n therefore_o it_o may_v be_v a_o godly_a policy_n for_o every_o man_n curn_v to_o erect_v a_o inquisition_n over_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o conscience_n long_o therefore_o let_v every_o professor_n look_v to_o it_o betwixt_o god_n and_o his_o conscience_n that_o he_o dally_v not_o with_o himself_o in_o this_o case_n for_o if_o he_o do_v then_o

they_o be_v bear_v be_v bear_v not_o only_o taint_v with_o original_a corruption_n but_o guilty_a also_o of_o adam_n sin_n this_o be_v a_o most_o certain_a truth_n though_o it_o seem_v strange_a for_o their_o good_a meaning_n and_o upright_o heart_n and_o brag_v of_o a_o good_a nature_n but_o they_o be_v foul_o deceive_v for_o take_v the_o civil_a man_n upon_o the_o earth_n and_o the_o seed_n of_o all_o sin_n in_o the_o world_n be_v in_o he_o by_o nature_n but_o to_o explain_v this_o point_n full_o observe_v these_o two_o clause_n first_o i_o say_v not_o the_o practice_n of_o all_o sin_n but_o the_o seed_n for_o all_o man_n practise_v not_o all_o sin_n the_o seed_n be_v in_o their_o nature_n but_o the_o practice_n be_v restrain_v sometime_o by_o education_n sometime_o by_o good_a and_o wholesome_a law_n sometime_o the_o constitution_n of_o man_n body_n deny_v the_o practice_n of_o some_o sin_n sometime_o the_o country_n a_o man_n dwell_v in_o or_o call_v a_o man_n live_v in_o keep_v he_o from_o the_o practice_n of_o some_o sin_n and_o always_o a_o general_a and_o limit_v grace_n of_o god_n restrain_v the_o nature_n of_o all_o man_n from_o run_v into_o many_o sin_n which_o hand_n of_o god_n if_o god_n shall_v take_v away_o and_o leave_v every_o man_n to_o his_o nature_n we_o shall_v see_v that_o every_o man_n will_v practice_v any_o sin_n in_o the_o world_n yea_o even_o the_o &_o most_o monstrous_a sin_n in_o the_o world_n second_o i_o say_v by_o nature_n for_o i_o know_v by_o good_a education_n &_o by_o grace_n it_o be_v otherwise_o grace_n rectify_v nature_n but_o that_o be_v no_o thanks_n to_o nature_n for_o it_o be_v as_o evil_a and_o corrupt_a still_o be_v sever_v from_o grace_n and_o therefore_o nature_n must_v be_v full_o abolish_v afore_o man_n come_v to_o heaven_n and_o yet_o though_o all_o this_o be_v true_a i_o say_v not_o that_o sin_n break_v out_o in_o all_o nature_n alike_o though_o all_o nature_n be_v alike_o corrupt_a for_o the_o course_n of_o nature_n be_v restrain_v in_o some_o more_o than_o other_o by_o the_o mean_v aforesaid_a but_o this_o be_v the_o truth_n that_o whereas_o some_o be_v not_o so_o angry_a some_o not_o so_o wanton_a some_o not_o so_o cruel_a some_o not_o so_o covetous_a some_o not_o so_o ambitious_a etc._n etc._n as_o other_o that_o come_v not_o from_o any_o goodness_n of_o nature_n in_o they_o above_o the_o other_o original_o but_o from_o god_n hand_n which_o temper_v restrain_v and_o moderate_v every_o man_n nature_n as_o he_o see_v good_a and_o if_o god_n do_v not_o thus_o moderate_a &_o restrain_v the_o nature_n of_o man_n but_o suffer_v they_o to_o break_v out_o to_o the_o full_a there_o will_v then_o be_v no_o order_n but_o all_o confusion_n in_o the_o world_n therefore_o as_o especial_o for_o his_o church_n quietness_n so_o also_o for_o the_o preservation_n of_o public_a peace_n and_o the_o uphold_v of_o society_n in_o the_o world_n between_o man_n and_o man_n the_o lord_n hold_v a_o hand_n over_o every_o man_n nature_n and_o keep_v every_o one_o in_o a_o certain_a compass_n limit_v by_o the_o wisdom_n of_o his_o power_n which_o restrain_v hand_n of_o he_o if_o the_o lord_n labour_n of_o our_o noble_a king_n to_o take_v order_n that_o that_o mean_v be_v keep_v without_o rise_v to_o the_o right_a hand_n or_o fall_v to_o the_o left_a this_o short_a treatse_n may_v hap_v to_o give_v some_o light_n &_o direction_n therein_o or_o at_o least_o may_v encourage_v &_o stir_v up_o their_o heart_n in_o who_o hand_n it_o be_v to_o do_v it_o under_o your_o worthy_a name_n will_v i_o have_v it_o see_v the_o world_n not_o so_o much_o for_o that_o i_o be_o bind_v to_o you_o both_o in_o many_o private_a and_o particular_a respect_n though_o that_o be_v much_o as_o for_o that_o know_v you_o both_o to_o be_v oâ—_n so_o right_a and_o reform_v a_o judgement_n in_o this_o case_n as_o you_o will_v have_v none_o minister_n but_o of_o sufficient_a gift_n and_o unblameable_a church_n as_o any_o christendom_n have_v see_v go_v forward_o in_o that_o and_o other_o your_o religious_a resolution_n it_o be_v the_o true_a way_n to_o honour_n both_o here_o and_o in_o a_o better_a of_o all_o the_o minister_n in_o the_o world_n not_o one_o of_o many_o be_v a_o right_a angel_n and_o a_o true_a interpreter_n the_o plain_a &_o proper_a sense_n be_v that_o among_o the_o man_n of_o this_o world_n there_o be_v not_o one_o of_o a_o thousand_o which_o prove_v a_o true_a minister_n for_o this_o point_n let_v we_o examine_v three_o point_n the_o truth_n of_o it_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o and_o the_o use_n of_o it_o the_o truth_n hereof_o be_v
minister_n let_v this_o suffice_v they_o they_o be_v the_o man_n that_o must_v declare_v unto_o man_n his_o righteousness_n even_o he_o that_o scorn_v and_o contemn_v the_o ministry_n he_o have_v no_o commissioner_n or_o rather_o no_o commissioner_n if_o they_o will_v not_o put_v it_o in_o execution_n it_o be_v therefore_o lamentable_a to_o see_v that_o some_o by_o not_o preach_v some_o by_o vain_a discourage_v they_o have_v more_o cause_n to_o bless_v god_n then_o to_o be_v grieve_v for_o doubtless_o they_o be_v far_o better_o they_o those_o who_o have_v great_a live_n and_o a_o evil_a people_n but_o as_o for_o those_o to_o who_o god_n have_v be_v so_o good_a as_o to_o bestow_v upon_o they_o competent_a live_n and_o a_o willing_a and_o well_o dispose_v people_n let_v they_o think_v themselves_o double_o bless_v of_o god_n and_o treble_v bind_v to_o honour_n god_n &_o to_o do_v good_a in_o his_o church_n and_o if_o such_o man_n go_v not_o before_o their_o brethren_n in_o all_o ministerial_a care_n and_o duty_n their_o fault_n be_v above_o all_o man_n &_o they_o make_v themselves_o unworthy_a of_o so_o great_a mercy_n company_n again_o if_o that_o a_o pollute_a people_n pollute_v their_o minister_n here_o be_v a_o good_a warning_n for_o all_o minister_n to_o be_v wary_a &_o choice_n of_o their_o company_n with_o who_o they_o will_v most_o private_o converse_v for_o as_o on_o the_o one_o side_n they_o may_v not_o retire_v themselves_o into_o solitariness_n nor_o sequester_v themselves_o from_o all_o society_n with_o their_o people_n which_o be_v rather_o a_o cimicall_a and_o fantastical_a than_o any_o way_n a_o religious_a practice_n so_o of_o all_o man_n be_v they_o to_o be_v most_o careful_a that_o they_o do_v not_o loose_o and_o lavish_o bestow_v themselves_o on_o all_o company_n as_o too_o many_o do_v in_o minister_n our_o church_n to_o the_o great_a scandal_n thereof_o who_o care_v not_o with_o who_o they_o converse_v but_o all_o company_n all_o place_n all_o time_n all_o sport_n &_o recreation_n all_o meeting_n all_o occasion_n be_v one_o with_o they_o but_o alas_o what_o marvel_v though_o such_o man_n keep_v not_o themselves_o unspotted_a of_o the_o world_n but_o prove_v too_o offensive_a to_o their_o call_n for_o see_v the_o best_a man_n can_v live_v with_o the_o best_a people_n but_o they_o shall_v receive_v some_o contagion_n from_o they_o how_o careful_o ought_v ordinary_a minister_n to_o make_v difference_n of_o man_n and_o meeting_n time_n and_o place_n and_o not_o diffuse_o &_o careless_o to_o thrust_v themselves_o into_o all_o so_o do_v shall_v they_o keep_v their_o call_n from_o much_o reproach_n &_o preserve_v themselves_o from_o much_o pollution_n which_o otherwise_o from_o their_o pollute_a people_n they_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o receive_v and_o here_o people_n be_v to_o be_v admonish_v company_n not_o too_o sharp_o to_o censure_v their_o minister_n though_o he_o be_v not_o so_o sociable_a with_o they_o all_o as_o it_o may_v be_v many_o will_v expect_v for_o it_o concern_v no_o man_n to_o be_v so_o wary_a of_o his_o company_n and_o his_o sport_n as_o it_o do_v the_o minister_n and_o if_o they_o will_v have_v comfort_n and_o honour_n by_o their_o minister_n let_v they_o be_v careful_a into_o what_o recreation_n &_o company_n they_o draw_v or_o desire_v he_o for_o the_o more_o pollute_v the_o people_n be_v among_o who_o he_o live_v the_o more_o careful_a must_v he_o be_v to_o keep_v himself_o clear_a from_o their_o pollution_n last_o here_o people_n be_v teach_v not_o to_o themselves_o be_v too_o sharp_a condemner_n of_o those_o minister_n who_o conversation_n be_v not_o so_o unblameable_a as_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v for_o as_o they_o live_v ill_a general_o the_o cause_n be_v because_o they_o live_v among_o a_o ill_a people_n why_o then_o shall_v they_o so_o much_o condemn_v they_o for_o such_o fault_n as_o wherein_o themselves_o have_v make_v they_o faulty_a i_o say_v not_o but_o our_o church_n and_o state_n and_o ministry_n be_v to_o censure_v such_o man_n and_o it_o be_v good_a they_o do_v it_o more_o but_o it_o be_v against_o all_o reason_n the_o people_n shall_v do_v so_o whereas_o themselves_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o it_o for_o alas_o if_o this_o holy_a prophet_n be_v a_o man_n of_o pollute_a lip_n because_o he_o dwell_v with_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a lip_n what_o marvel_v then_o though_o ordinary_a minister_n be_v pollute_v with_o the_o common_a and_o universal_a pollution_n of_o their_o people_n people_n therefore_o be_v first_o of_o all_o to_o see_v that_o themselves_o be_v well_o order_v and_o godly_a and_o then_o just_o may_v they_o complain_v if_o the_o life_n of_o their_o minister_n be_v not_o agreeable_a but_o otherwise_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a without_o very_o special_a grace_n of_o god_n but_o that_o a_o minister_n shall_v be_v more_o or_o less_o touch_v with_o those_o crime_n which_o be_v the_o common_a fault_n of_o his_o people_n and_o lamentable_a experience_n daily_o let_v we_o see_v it_o that_o where_o a_o people_n in_o a_o town_n be_v give_v to_o drunkenness_n there_o the_o minister_n be_v either_o so_o for_o company_n or_o at_o least_o too_o good_a a_o fellow_n where_o a_o people_n be_v give_v to_o contention_n there_o the_o minister_n have_v too_o many_o fuite_n where_o the_o people_n be_v popish_a there_o the_o minister_n be_v too_o superstitious_a where_o the_o people_n be_v ignorant_a there_o the_o minister_n be_v no_o great_a clerk_n where_o the_o people_n be_v give_v to_o any_o great_a sin_n there_o the_o minister_n general_o be_v not_o clear_a from_o the_o same_o pollution_n and_o it_o be_v see_v that_o the_o best_a minister_n &_o most_o careful_a of_o all_o do_v complain_v bitter_o of_o the_o pollution_n of_o their_o people_n for_o that_o how_o soever_o it_o may_v be_v they_o escape_v partake_v with_o their_o sin_n yet_o they_o always_o find_v at_o the_o least_o a_o dull_n &_o decay_v of_o god_n grace_n in_o themselves_o where_o the_o people_n be_v untoward_a and_o disobedient_a if_o therefore_o a_o minister_n live_v with_o such_o a_o people_n his_o case_n be_v pitiful_a and_o dangerous_a for_o he_o walk_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o net_n and_o snare_n which_o be_v lay_v for_o he_o on_o every_o side_n and_o if_o he_o escape_v they_o i_o mean_v if_o he_o keep_v himself_o unspotted_a in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o spot_a &_o pollute_a people_n his_o care_n and_o his_o conscience_n be_v worthy_a both_o admiration_n and_o imitation_n and_o himself_o be_v worthy_a double_a honour_n as_o be_v both_o a_o zealous_a minister_n and_o a_o holy_a man_n but_o he_o who_o god_n have_v bless_v with_o a_o good_a deprive_v and_o tractable_a people_n and_o well_o affect_v to_o the_o word_n and_o yet_o himself_o live_v loose_o &_o scandalous_o among_o they_o a_o heavy_a burden_n and_o a_o hard_a account_n lie_v on_o that_o minister_n and_o no_o rebuke_n be_v too_o rough_a no_o punishment_n too_o great_a no_o censure_n too_o sharp_a for_o he_o and_o if_o this_o holy_a prophet_n fear_v so_o much_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o his_o small_a pollution_n and_o yet_o live_v among_o so_o wicked_a and_o pollute_v a_o people_n than_o what_o heaviness_n and_o horror_n shall_v be_v heap_v on_o his_o soul_n who_o care_v not_o with_o how_o foul_a pollution_n his_o life_n be_v stain_v and_o yet_o live_v among_o a_o godly_a &_o well_o dispose_v people_n and_o thus_o we_o have_v
of_o all_o sin_n make_v a_o man_n bold_a in_o god_n presence_n and_o rather_o desirous_a then_o afraid_a to_o behold_v god_n glory_n which_o shall_v be_v most_o apparent_a at_o the_o last_o day_n for_o when_o the_o wicked_a shall_v desire_v rather_o to_o be_v cover_v 27._o with_o the_o hill_n and_o ground_n to_o dust_n by_o the_o mountain_n then_o to_o appear_v before_o the_o face_n of_o god_n then_o shall_v the_o godly_a who_o holiness_n shall_v then_o be_v perfect_a look_v up_o and_o lift_v up_o their_o head_n because_o their_o redemption_n be_v so_o nigh_o and_o job_n testify_v of_o himself_o that_o he_o know_v his_o redeemer_n live_v and_o that_o he_o shall_v stand_v before_o he_o &_o look_v upon_o he_o with_o his_o eye_n thus_o as_o guiltiness_n drive_v a_o man_n from_o the_o king_n presence_n but_o innocency_n make_v he_o bold_a before_o he_o so_o sinfulness_n make_v a_o man_n avoid_v god_n presence_n but_o holiness_n make_v he_o draw_v near_o unto_o god_n and_o to_o rejoice_v in_o his_o presence_n then_o for_o a_o conclusion_n of_o this_o point_n man_n let_v all_o man_n hear_v learn_v the_o way_n to_o true_a courage_n and_o boldness_n before_o god_n namely_o to_o repent_v daily_o of_o their_o sin_n and_o labour_n to_o grow_v in_o true_a holiness_n wealth_n nor_o wit_n learning_n nor_o authority_n can_v do_v this_o for_o thou_o but_o only_o a_o good_a conscience_n which_o must_v be_v make_v good_a by_o grace_n and_o by_o repentance_n then_o shall_v thou_o rejoice_v in_o god_n presence_n in_o this_o world_n and_o delight_n to_o think_v of_o god_n to_o speak_v of_o god_n to_o pray_v unto_o he_o to_o meet_v he_o in_o his_o word_n and_o sacrament_n and_o at_o the_o last_o day_n shall_v thou_o stand_v with_o confidence_n before_o the_o throne_n of_o his_o glory_n hitherto_o of_o the_o fear_n and_o astonishment_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o of_o the_o cause_n thereof_o now_o follow_v his_o consolation_n then_o fly_v one_o of_o the_o seraphim_n outward_a sign_n a_o coal_n from_o the_o altar_n 5_o the_o outward_a action_n or_o application_n of_o it_o he_o touch_v his_o lip_n the_o matter_n of_o the_o consolation_n be_v last_o in_o order_n let_v we_o therefore_o first_o speak_v of_o the_o circumstance_n the_o first_o circumstance_n be_v the_o time_n fear_n when_o this_o prophet_n be_v comfort_v and_o raise_v from_o his_o fear_n then_o say_v the_o text_n that_o be_v after_o his_o fear_n and_o astonishment_n but_o not_o afore_o thus_o deal_v god_n always_o with_o all_o his_o saint_n he_o bestow_v no_o grace_n on_o they_o pertain_v to_o salvation_n but_o after_o he_o have_v by_o some_o mean_n or_o other_o bring_v they_o to_o true_a humiliation_n in_o themselves_o humiliation_n and_o to_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n humiliation_n be_v the_o preparative_n for_o grace_n for_o when_o by_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o their_o own_o misery_n by_o sin_n he_o have_v even_o drive_v they_o quite_o out_o of_o themselves_o find_v nothing_o in_o themselves_o but_o cause_n of_o fear_n and_o astonishment_n then_o power_v he_o the_o oil_n of_o grace_n and_o of_o sweet_a comfort_n into_o their_o heart_n &_o refresh_v their_o weary_a soul_n with_o the_o dew_n of_o his_o mercy_n this_o point_n need_v no_o further_a proof_n for_o look_v into_o the_o scripture_n &_o we_o shall_v find_v god_n never_o call_v any_o man_n to_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n or_o to_o any_o notable_a work_n or_o function_n in_o his_o church_n but_o he_o first_o humble_v they_o and_o then_o bring_v they_o out_o of_o all_o conceit_n with_o themselves_o and_o then_o wrought_v in_o they_o and_o by_o they_o his_o wonderful_a work_n the_o use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n be_v first_o of_o all_o to_o teach_v all_o man_n to_o esteem_v aright_o of_o the_o as_o affliction_n that_o god_n lay_v upon_o they_o in_o this_o world_n common_o man_n take_v they_o impatient_o &_o our_o nature_n grudgrudge_v against_o they_o but_o let_v a_o christian_a man_n consider_v with_o himself_o how_o god_n have_v always_o deal_v with_o his_o child_n and_o he_o have_v cause_n not_o to_o think_v so_o for_o do_v god_n lay_v some_o great_a affliction_n on_o thou_o it_o may_v be_v he_o have_v some_o mighty_a work_n of_o his_o grace_n to_o work_v in_o thou_o or_o some_o great_a work_n of_o mercy_n to_o bewroght_v by_o thou_o in_o his_o church_n and_o hereby_o prepare_v thou_o for_o the_o same_o say_v therefore_o 9_o with_o the_o holy_a prophet_n i_o hold_v my_o tongue_n o_o lord_n and_o speak_v nothing_o because_o it_o be_v thy_o do_v and_o what_o god_n may_v intend_v in_o his_o so_o do_v to_o thou_o thou_o can_v not_o tell_v and_o therefore_o in_o silence_n and_o patience_n possess_v thy_o soul_n again_o here_o be_v a_o comfort_n to_o all_o such_o comfortable_a as_o be_v distress_v in_o mind_n in_o sense_n of_o their_o fin_n and_o sight_n of_o god_n wrath_n their_o state_n be_v not_o miserable_a much_o less_o desperate_a for_o they_o be_v in_o the_o high_a way_n to_o grace_n and_o favour_n god_n justify_v not_o but_o he_o that_o repent_v god_n exalt_v not_o but_o he_o that_o be_v humble_v god_n comfort_v not_o but_o he_o that_o be_v distress_v god_n have_v mercy_n on_o none_o but_o such_o as_o both_o know_v and_o feel_v they_o want_v it_o and_o know_v also_o that_o they_o know_v not_o where_o to_o have_v it_o but_o at_o his_o hand_n happy_a therefore_o be_v that_o soul_n that_o feel_v the_o weight_n and_o burden_n of_o sin_n for_o to_o he_o will_v christ_n bring_v most_o ease_n and_o comfort_n god_n minister_n therefore_o be_v hereby_o to_o comfort_v distress_a conscience_n to_o assure_v they_o that_o if_o with_o this_o prophet_n they_o be_v so_o deep_o touch_v with_o sight_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o god_n justice_n as_o that_o they_o cry_v woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v then_o even_o then_o be_v they_o most_o capable_a of_o comfort_n and_o best_a prepare_v to_o receive_v it_o as_o here_o it_o sell_v out_o to_o the_o holy_a prophet_n three_o here_o be_v the_o they_o way_n teach_v we_o how_o to_o attain_v to_o any_o excellent_a grace_n of_o god_n either_o for_o our_o own_o salvation_n or_o the_o good_a of_o the_o church_n namely_o to_o labour_v for_o a_o sensible_a feel_n of_o the_o want_n of_o they_o in_o ourselves_o for_o god_n use_v to_o bestow_v no_o gift_n on_o any_o man_n but_o such_o as_o do_v in_o humility_n &_o lowliness_a confess_v to_o god_n &_o acknowledge_v in_o themselves_o the_o want_n of_o they_o so_o the_o bless_a virgin_n sing_v god_n fill_v the_o 9_o hungry_a with_o good_a thing_n but_o the_o rich_a he_o send_v empty_a away_o and_o so_o the_o psalmist_n god_n satisfy_v the_o hungry_a soul_n and_o fill_v the_o empty_a soul_n with_o goodness_n so_o than_o if_o thou_o be_v rich_a in_o thy_o conceit_n god_n have_v not_o for_o thou_o but_o if_o thou_o be_v hungry_a he_o be_v ready_a to_o fill_v thou_o with_o good_a thing_n and_o do_v thou_o acknowledge_v thy_o soul_n empty_a then_o behold_v treasure_n of_o goodness_n to_o feed_v and_o fill_v thou_o and_o be_v thou_o cast_v down_o with_o the_o prophet_n and_o be_v thy_o soul_n empty_a of_o hope_n and_o fraught_v with_o fear_n then_o behold_v even_o then_o god_n and_o his_o angel_n ready_a to_o raise_v thou_o up_o &_o to_o fill_v thou_o with_o consolation_n thus_o much_o
