before_o and_o then_o sin_n by_o deprive_v the_o soul_n of_o it_o so_o to_o stain_v it_o for_o it_o be_v enough_o that_o the_o soul_n ought_v to_o have_v grace_n in_o it_o though_o it_o be_v not_o present_v before_o as_o when_o a_o man_n do_v not_o believe_v god_n word_n though_o this_o unbelief_n do_v not_o deprive_v he_o of_o the_o beauty_n and_o grace_n of_o faith_n which_o he_o have_v yet_o it_o do_v of_o that_o beauty_n of_o faith_n which_o he_o ought_v to_o have_v reâ—ission_n and_o thus_o as_o particular_a actual_a sin_n be_v multiply_v so_o be_v particular_a stain_n and_o the_o act_n once_o commit_v that_o cause_v the_o obligation_n to_o punishment_n and_o this_o obligation_n continue_v god_n do_v not_o forgive_v when_o a_o sin_n be_v commit_v it_o may_v remain_v in_o god_n mind_n and_o in_o our_o mind_n in_o our_o mind_n by_o way_n of_o guilt_n and_o trouble_n as_o david_n say_v his_o sin_n be_v always_o before_o he_o or_o else_o in_o god_n mind_n so_o that_o he_o do_v will_n the_o punishment_n of_o such_o now_o when_o god_n do_v forgive_v he_o blot_v sin_n out_o of_o his_o mind_n and_o remember_v they_o no_o more_o he_o do_v not_o will_n the_o obligation_n of_o they_o to_o punishment_n be_v satisfy_v through_o christ_n and_o the_o party_n believe_v in_o he_o by_o all_o this_o you_o may_v see_v that_o after_o a_o sin_n be_v commit_v there_o remain_v obligation_n in_o the_o will_n and_o mind_n of_o god_n to_o eternal_a punishment_n and_o god_n when_o he_o do_v forgive_v cancel_v this_o debt_n or_o obligation_n this_o be_v clear_v we_o may_v the_o easy_o judge_v with_o what_o act_n god_n do_v forgive_v sin_n but_o of_o that_o hereafter_o god_n let_v we_o consider_v the_o aggravation_n of_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v a_o offence_n to_o god_n which_o do_v in_o which_o sense_n sin_n be_v a_o moral_a monster_n as_o there_o be_v natural_a monster_n for_o the_o soul_n in_o sin_n do_v not_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n answerable_a unto_o reason_n and_o the_o law_n of_o god_n this_o consideration_n may_v much_o humble_v we_o but_o there_o be_v another_o thing_n in_o sin_n which_o do_v more_o aggravate_v it_o and_o that_o be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o dishonour_n and_o a_o offence_n to_o god_n and_o by_o this_o mean_v it_o become_v above_o our_o power_n ever_o to_o satisfy_v god_n for_o it_o therefore_o in_o every_o sin_n beside_o the_o particular_a consideration_n look_v upon_o that_o general_a one_o which_o be_v in_o all_o viz._n that_o peculiar_a deformity_n it_o have_v evil_n as_o it_o be_v a_o offence_n against_o god_n be_v dispute_v whether_o sin_n have_v a_o infinite_a evil_n and_o deformity_n in_o it_o to_o answer_v this_o if_o a_o sin_n be_v consider_v in_o its_o kind_n so_o it_o be_v not_o infinite_a because_o one_o sin_n be_v so_o determine_v to_o its_o kind_n that_o it_o be_v not_o another_o sin_n as_o theft_n be_v not_o murder_v neither_o second_o can_v sin_n be_v say_v to_o be_v infinite_a evil_n in_o the_o aggravation_n of_o a_o sin_n arise_v from_o the_o worth_n of_o the_o person_n against_o who_o it_o be_v commit_v if_o the_o person_n offend_v be_v of_o infinite_a honour_n and_o dignity_n than_o the_o offence_n do_v against_o such_o a_o one_o have_v a_o infinite_a evil_n and_o wickedness_n in_o it_o so_o that_o the_o infiniteness_n of_o sin_n arise_v whole_o from_o the_o external_a consideration_n of_o god_n against_o who_o it_o be_v but_o of_o this_o more_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o the_o necessity_n of_o christ_n satisfaction_n to_o god_n justice_n by_o his_o death_n let_v the_o use_v be_v to_o inform_v thou_o that_o every_o sin_n commit_v use_v continue_v as_o fresh_a to_o cry_v vengeance_n many_o year_n after_o as_o if_o it_o be_v but_o late_o do_v till_o remit_v by_o great_a and_o glorious_a benefit_n of_o the_o gospel_n it_o and_o in_o the_o first_o place_n as_o we_o former_o consider_v some_o choice_n hebrew_n word_n that_o set_v forth_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n so_o now_o let_v we_o take_v notice_n of_o some_o greek_a word_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n that_o express_v this_o gracious_a act_n of_o god_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n know_v best_a in_o what_o word_n to_o represent_v this_o glorious_a mercy_n to_o we_o the_o word_n that_o be_v most_o frequent_o use_v by_o the_o evangelist_n and_o apostle_n be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d which_o in_o the_o general_n be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o dismiss_v or_o send_v away_o to_o let_v alone_o to_o leave_v to_o permit_v or_o suffer_v in_o which_o sense_n the_o scripture_n often_o use_v it_o and_o certain_o god_n in_o this_o sense_n do_v pardon_v sin_n because_o he_o let_v it_o alone_o he_o leave_v it_o he_o meddle_v no_o more_o with_o it_o but_o handle_v the_o person_n forgive_v as_o if_o he_o never_o have_v be_v a_o sinner_n but_o common_o this_o word_n be_v use_v of_o absolve_v those_o who_o be_v accuse_v as_o guilty_a which_o appear_v in_o that_o famous_a sentence_n of_o agesilaus_n
sin_n do_v natural_o and_o necessary_o go_v away_o so_o that_o there_o need_v no_o acceptation_n from_o god_n or_o act_v of_o remission_n but_o only_o a_o infusion_n of_o grace_n to_o repent_v but_o this_o in_o the_o next_o sermon_n shall_v main_o be_v insist_v upon_o and_o it_o be_v of_o great_a practical_a use_n to_o take_v we_o off_o from_o have_v confidence_n and_o trust_v in_o our_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n for_o as_o when_o a_o creditor_n do_v forgive_v his_o debtor_n it_o be_v the_o sole_a act_n of_o the_o creditor_n not_o any_o thing_n of_o the_o debtor_n so_o in_o pardon_v it_o be_v not_o any_o thing_n that_o we_o do_v though_o with_o never_o so_o much_o love_n and_o brokennesse_n of_o heart_n that_o do_v release_v and_o untie_v the_o bond_n of_o sin_n but_o it_o be_v a_o act_n of_o god_n only_o if_o you_o say_v object_n why_o then_o be_v repentance_n and_o faith_n press_v so_o necessary_o that_o god_n do_v not_o forgive_v without_o it_o for_o if_o it_o be_v only_o a_o act_n of_o god_n then_o it_o may_v be_v do_v without_o any_o work_n of_o the_o sinner_n intervening_a but_o of_o this_o in_o the_o next_o place_n only_o for_o the_o present_n take_v notice_n answ_n that_o it_o be_v not_o any_o sorrow_n or_o retraction_n of_o we_o that_o make_v a_o sin_n either_o remissible_a or_o actual_o remit_v but_o a_o mere_a act_n of_o god_n and_o if_o all_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n be_v ask_v this_o question_n what_o they_o mean_v when_o they_o pray_v god_n to_o forgive_v their_o sin_n the_o sense_n of_o all_o will_v be_v not_o that_o they_o shall_v do_v something_o which_o will_v remit_v they_o but_o that_o god_n by_o his_o gracious_a favour_n will_v release_v they_o so_o then_o if_o all_o these_o particular_n be_v cast_v up_o together_o you_o may_v clear_o conceive_v how_o god_n do_v forgive_v sin_n not_o by_o infuse_v or_o put_v grace_n into_o we_o which_o may_v expel_v sin_n as_o light_n do_v darkness_n but_o by_o his_o outward_a grace_n and_o favour_n accept_v of_o we_o and_o therefore_o we_o be_v not_o to_o rely_v upon_o any_o thing_n we_o do_v not_o to_o presume_v no_o not_o of_o our_o godly_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n but_o to_o look_v up_o to_o heaven_n desire_v god_n will_v speak_v the_o word_n that_o he_o will_v pronounce_v the_o sentence_n of_o absolution_n let_v the_o use_v be_v to_o look_v upon_o ourselves_o as_o bind_v in_o humble_a debase_v break_a heart_n through_o sense_n of_o sin_n and_o not_o to_o walk_v confident_o and_o delicate_o like_o agag_n say_v the_o worst_a be_v past_a god_n say_v of_o ahab_n though_o humble_v for_o external_a motive_n only_o see_v thou_o how_o ahab_n humble_v himself_o how_o much_o more_o will_v god_n take_v notice_n of_o those_o who_o humble_a themselves_o upon_o spiritual_a mercy_n which_o be_v the_o take_n and_o remove_v of_o sin_n away_o 2._o 2._o although_o the_o scripture_n attribute_n pardon_n of_o sin_n to_o many_o qualification_n in_o a_o man_n yet_o repentance_n be_v the_o most_o express_a and_o proper_a duty_n the_o scripture_n sometime_o make_v forgive_a of_o other_o a_o necessary_a disposition_n sometime_o confess_v and_o forsake_v of_o they_o sometime_o believe_v though_o that_o have_v a_o peculiar_a nature_n in_o receive_v of_o pardon_n which_o other_o grace_n have_v not_o and_o therefore_o faith_n obtain_v pardon_n by_o way_n of_o a_o instrument_n apply_v which_o other_o grace_n do_v not_o but_o if_o we_o speak_v of_o the_o express_a formal_a qualification_n it_o be_v repentance_n of_o our_o sin_n not_o repentance_n as_o it_o be_v a_o mere_a bare_a terror_n upon_o thy_o heart_n but_o as_o it_o be_v sweeten_v with_o evangelical_n consideration_n luther_n say_v there_o be_v no_o word_n so_o terrible_a unto_o he_o and_o which_o his_o soul_n if_o there_o be_v nothing_o require_v in_o we_o and_o again_o so_o to_o look_v upon_o that_o which_o we_o do_v as_o if_o god_n be_v not_o to_o be_v acknowledge_v 3._o 3._o none_o may_v believe_v or_o conclude_v that_o their_o sin_n be_v pardon_v before_o they_o have_v repent_v to_o this_o i_o shall_v speak_v more_o particular_o when_o i_o handle_v the_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n before_o her_o sin_n history_n for_o the_o better_a understanding_n of_o the_o text_n let_v we_o brief_o consider_v the_o history_n and_o first_o the_o woman_n be_v describe_v by_o her_o quality_n inherent_a a_o sinner_n not_o in_o a_o common_a sense_n as_o all_o be_v but_o in_o a_o more_o notorious_a manner_n and_o therefore_o those_o that_o mitigate_v her_o fault_n out_o of_o some_o reverence_n or_o honour_n to_o she_o do_v not_o so_o much_o increase_v her_o honour_n as_o maldonat_a upon_o the_o place_n well_o observe_v as_o detract_v from_o christ_n honour_n for_o the_o physician_n skill_n be_v most_o commend_v where_o the_o disease_n be_v more_o desperate_a that_o she_o be_v a_o know_v great_a sinner_n appear_v in_o that_o the_o pharisee_fw-mi wonder_v at_o christ_n because_o he_o will_v a_o sign_n and_o effect_n it_o may_v be_v gather_v that_o her_o sin_n be_v forgive_v she_o but_o you_o may_v ask_v how_o can_v she_o come_v to_o know_v her_o sin_n be_v forgive_v before_o christ_n tell_v she_o i_o answer_v by_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n make_v to_o every_o true_a penitent_n and_o believer_n though_o this_o assurance_n of_o she_o be_v imperfect_a and_o therefore_o admit_v of_o further_a degree_n whereas_o then_o all_o this_o repentance_n and_o humiliation_n be_v not_o that_o sin_n may_v be_v forgive_v but_o from_o faith_n that_o they_o be_v forgive_v we_o may_v observe_v this_o that_o the_o sense_n and_o apprehension_n of_o pardon_n of_o sin_n already_o obtain_v 1._o do_v not_o beget_v carnal_a security_n but_o a_o further_a mollify_a and_o humble_v of_o the_o heart_n ezek_n 14.18_o 30._o mat._n 3.2_o mark_v 6.12_o luk._n 13.3_o act._n 3.19_o and_o general_o in_o most_o place_n of_o scripture_n in_o the_o second_o place_n there_o be_v a_o humiliation_n of_o heart_n and_o brokenness_n of_o soul_n for_o sin_n arise_v from_o thâ—_n apprehension_n of_o god_n love_n in_o pardon_v whereby_o we_o grieve_v that_o we_o shall_v deal_v so_o unkind_o with_o so_o good_a and_o gracious_a a_o god_n this_o though_o more_o rare_o yet_o be_v sometime_o speak_v of_o in_o scripture_n as_o first_o in_o this_o woman_n who_o out_o of_o the_o apprehension_n of_o god_n love_n practise_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o false_a and_o dangerous_a error_n to_o acknowledge_v no_o other_o kind_n of_o repentance_n than_o the_o late_a the_o papist_n will_v not_o acknowledge_v this_o late_a humiliation_n at_o all_o because_o they_o deny_v all_o faith_n and_o assurance_n that_o a_o believer_n may_v have_v of_o
