I stand here by the well of water and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water 14 And let it come to pass that the damsel to whom I shall say Let down thy pitcher I pray thee that I may drink and she shall say Drink and I will give thy camels drink also let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master 15 ¶ And it came to pass before he had done speaking that behold Rebekah came out who was born to Bethuel son of Milcah the wife of Nahor Abrahams brother with her pitcher upon her shoulder 16 And the damsel was †Heb. good of countenance very fair to look upon a virgin neither had any man known her and she went down to the well and filled her pitcher and came up 17 And the servant ran to meet her and said Let me I pray thee drink a little water of thy pitcher 18 And she said Drink my lord and she hasted and let down her pitcher upon her hand and gave him drink 19 And when she had done giving him drink she said I will draw water for thy camels also until they have done drinking 20 And she hasted and emptied her pitcher into the trough and ran again unto the well to draw water and drew for all his camels 21 And the man wondring at her held his peace to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not 22 And it came to pass as the camels had done drinking that the man took a golden ‖ Or jewel for the forehead ear-ring of hall a shekel weight and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold 23 And said Whose daughter art thou tell me I pray thee is there room in thy fathers house for us to lodge in 24 And she said unto him I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah which she bare unto Nahor 25 She said moreover unto him We have both straw and provender enough and room to lodge in 26 And the man bowed down has head and worshipped the LORD 27 And he said Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth I bring in the way the LORD led me to the house of my masters brethren 28 And the damsel ran told them of her mothers house these things 29 ¶ And Rebekah had a brother and his name was Laban and Laban ran out unto the man unto the well 30 And it came to pass when he saw the ear-ring and bracelets upon his sisters hands and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister saying Thus spake the man unto me that he came unto the man and behold he stood by the camels at the well 31 And he said Come in thou blessed of the LORD wherefore standest thou without for I have prepared the house room for the camels 32 ¶ And the man came into the house and he ungirded his camels and gave straw and provender for the camels and water to wash his feet and the mens feet that were with him 33 And there was set meat before him to eat but he said I will not eat until I have told mine errand And he said Speak on 34 And he said I am Abrahams servant 35 And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly and he is become great and he hath given him flocks and herds and silver and gold and men-servants and maid-servants and camels and asses 36 And Sarah my masters wife bare a son to my master when she was old and unto him hath he given all that he hath 37 And my master made me swear saying Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I dwell 38 But thou shalt go unto my fathers house and to my kindred and take a wife unto my son 39 And I said unto my master Peradventure the woman will not follow me 40 And he said unto me the LORD before whom I walk will send his angel with thee and prosper thy way and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred and of my fathers house 41 Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath when thou comest to my kindred and if they give not the◠one thou shalt be clear from my oath 42 And I came this day unto the well and said O LORD God of my master Abraham if now thou do prosper my way which I go 43 * Vers 13. Behold I stand by the well of water and it shall come to pass that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water and I say to her Give me I pray thee a little water of thy pitcher to drink 44 And she say to me Both drink thou and I will also draw for thy camels let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my masters son 45 And before I had done speaking in mine heart Behold Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder and she went down unto the well and drew water and I said unto her Let me drink I pray thee 46 And she made haste and let down her pitcher from her shoulder and said Drink and I will give thy camels drink also so I drank and she made the camels drink also 47 And I asked her and said Whose daughter art thou And she said The daughter of Bethuel Nahors son whom Milcah bare unto him and I put the ear-ring upon her face and the bracelets upon her hands 48 And I bowed down my head and worshipped the LORD and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham which had led me in the right way to take my masters brothers daughter unto his son 49 And now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master tell me and it not tell me that I may turn to the right hand or to the left 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said The thing proceedeth from the LORD we cannot speak unto thee bad or good 51 Behold Rebekah is before thee take her and go and let her be thy masters sons wife as the LORD hath spoken 52 And it came to pass that when Abrahams servant heard their words he worshipped the LORD bowing himself to the earth 53 And the servant brought forth †Heb. vessels jewels of silver and jewels of gold and raiment and gave them to Rebekah he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things 54 And they did eat and drink he and the men that were with him and tarried all night and they rose up in the morning and he said * Vers 56. and 59. CIII 1 An exhortation to bless God for his mercy 15 and for the constancy thereof ¶ A psalm of David BLess the LORD O my soul and all that is within me bless his holy name 2 Bless the LORD O my soul and forget not all his benefits 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities who healeth all thy diseases 4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things so that thy youth is renewed like the eagles 6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgement for all that are oppressed 7 He made known his ways unto Moses his acts unto the children of Israel 8 * Exod 34.6 7. CXVIII 1 An exhortation to praise God for his mercy 5 The psalmist by his experience sheweth how good it is to trust in God 19Vnder the type of the psalmist the coming of Christ in his kingdom is expressed O * 1 Chr. 16.8 Ps 106.1 107.1 136.1 Give thanks unto the LORD for he is good because his mercy endureth for ever 2 Let Israel now say that his mercy endureth for ever 3 Let the house of Aaron now say that his mercy endureth for ever 4 Let them now that fear the LORD say that his mercy endureth for ever 5 I called upon the LORD †Heb. out of distress in distress the LORD answered me and set me in a large place 6 * Ps 56.4 11. Sout up given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces they have made a noise in the house of the LORD as in the day of a solemn feast 8 The LORD hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion he hath stretched out a line he hath not withdrawn his hand from †Heb. swallowing up destroying therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament they languished together 9 Her gates are sunk into the ground he hath destroyed and broken her bars her king and her princes are among the Gentiles the law is no more her * Ps 74.9 prophets also finde no vision from the LORD 10 The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground and keep silence they have cast up dust upon their heads they have girded themselves with sackcloth the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground 11 Mine eyes do fail with tears my bowels are troubled my liver is poured upon the earth for the destruction of the daughter of my people because the children and the sucklings ‖ Or saint swoon in the streets of the city 12 They say to their mothers Where is corn and wine when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city when their soul was poured out into their mothers bosom 13 What thing shall I take to witness for thee what thing shall I liken to thee O daughter of Jerusalem what shall I equal to thee that I may comfort thee O virgin daughter of Zion for thy breach is great like the sea who can heal thee 14 Thy * Jer. 2.8 and 5.31 and 14.14 and 23.16 prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee and they have not discovered thine iniquity to turn away thy captivity but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment 15 All that pass †Heb. by the way by clap their hands at thee they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem saying Is this the câ—ty that men call * Ps 48.2 the perfection of beauty the joy of the whole earth 16 All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee they hiss and gnash the teeth they say We have swallowed her up certainly this is the day that we looked for we have found we have seen it 17 The LORD hath done that which he had * Lev. 26.16 devised he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old he hath thrown down and hath not pitied and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoyce over thee he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries 18 Their heart cried unto the Lord O wall of the daughter of Zion * Jer. 14.17 Ch. â— 16 let tears run down like a river day and night give thy self no rest let not the apple of thine eye cease 19 Arise cry out in the night in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord lift up thy hands towards him for the life of thy young children that faint for hunger in the top of every street 20 ¶ Behold O LORD and consider to whom thou hast done this shall the women eat their fruit and children ‖ Or swaddled with their hands of a span long shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the LORD 21 The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets my virgins and my young men are fain by the sword thou hast slain them in the day of thy anger thou hast killed and not pitied 22 Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrours round about so that in the day of the LORDS anger none escaped nor remained those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed CHAP. III. 1 The faithful bewall their â—alamities 22 By the mercies of God they nourish their hope 37 They acknowledge Gods justice 55 They pray for deliverance 64 and venâ—eance on their enemies I Am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath 2 He hath led me and brought me into darkness but not into light 3 Surely against me is he turned he turneth his hand against me all the day 4 My flesh and my skin hath he made old he hath broken my bones 5 He hath builded against me and compassed me with gall and travel 6 He hath set me in dark places as they that be dead of old 7 He hath hedged me about that I cannot get out he hath made my chain heavy 8 Also when I cry and shout he shutteth out my prayer 9 He hath enclosed my ways with hewn stone the hath made my paths crooked 10 He was unto me as a bear lying in wait and as a

XIV 3 Tobit giveth instructions to his son 8 specially to leave Nineve 11 He and his wise die and are buried 12 Tobias removeth to Ecbatane 14 and there died after he had heard of the destruction of Nineve SO Tobit made an end of praising God 2 And he was eight and fifty years old when he lost his sight which was restored to him after eight years and he gave alms and he ‖ Or did more and more fâ—â—r increased in the fear of the Lord God and praised him 3 And when he was very aged he called his son and the six sons of his son and said to him My son take thy children for behold I am aged and am ready to depart out of this life 4 Go into Media my son for I surely beleeve those things which Jonas the prophet spake of Nineve that it shall be overthrown and that for a time peace shall rather be in Media and that our brethren shall lie scattered in the earth from that good land and Jerusalem shall be desolate and the house of God in it shall be burned and shall be desolate for a time 5 * Ezc. 3. â— 6.14 And that again God will have mercy on them and bring them again into the sand where they shall build a temple but not like to the first until the time of that age be fulfilled and afterward they shall return from all places of their captivity and build up Jerusalem gloriously and the house of God shall be built in it ‖ For ever is not in the Romane copy for ever with a glorious building as the prophets have spoken thereof 6 And all nations shall turn and fear the Lord God truly and shall bury their idols 7 So shall all nations praise the Lord and his people shall confess God and the Lord shall exalt his people and all those which love the Lord God in truth and justice shall rejoyce shewing mercy to our brethren 8 And now my son depart out of Nineve because that those things which the prophet Jonas spake shall surely come to pass 9 But keep thou the law and the commandments and shew thy self merciful and just that it may go well with thee 10 And bury me decently and thy mother with me but tarry no longer at Nineve Remember my son how Aman handled Achiacharuâ— that brought him up how out of light he brought him into darkness and how he rewarded him again yet Achiacharus was ‖ Or preserved saved but the other had his reward for he went down into darkness ‖ Jutus readeth Nitzha Manasses gave alms and escaped the snares of death ‖ Rom. which he had set which they had set for him but Aman fell into the snare and perished 11 Wherefore now my son consider what alms doeth and how righteousness doth deliver When he had said these things he gave up the Ghost in the bed being an hundred and eight and fifty years old and ‖ Or. they he buried him honourably 12 And when Anna his mother was dead he buried her with his father but Tobias departed with his wife and children to Ecbatane to Raguel his father in law 13 Where he became old with honour and he buried his father and mother in law honourably and he ‖ Or. possissed inherited their substance and his father Tobits 14 And he died at Ecbatane in Media being an hundred and seven and twenty years
to be made a spoil unto them then to die for thirst for we will be his servants that our souls may live and not see the death of our infants before our eyes nor our wives nor our children to die 28 We take to witness against you the heaven and the earth and our God and Lord of our fathers which punisheth us according to our sins and the sins of our fathers ‖ Or leâ—t â—e do meaning Holofernes that he do not according as we have said this day 29 Then there was great weeping with one consent in the midst of the assembly and they cried unto the Lord God with a loud voice 30 Then said Ozias to them Brethren be of good courage let us yet endure five days in the which space the Lord our God may turn his mercy towards us for he will not forsake us utterly 31 And if these days pass and there come no help unto us I will do according to your word 32 And he dispersed the people every one to their own charge and they went unto the walls and towres of their city and sent the women and children into their houses and they were very low brought in the city CHAP. VIII 1 The state and behaviour of Judith a widow 12 She blameth the governours for their promise to yeeld 17 and adviseth them to trust in God 28 They excuse their promise 32 She promiseth to do something for them NOw at that time Judith heard thereof which was the daughter of Merari the son of Ox the son of Joseph the son of Oziel the son of Elcia the son of Ananias the son of Gedeon the son of Raphaim the son of Acitho the son of Eliu the son of Eliab the son of Nathanael the son of ‖ Or Samaâ—iel Samael the son of Salasadal the son of Israel 2 And Manasses was her husband of her tribe and kindred who died in the barley-harvest 3 For as he stood overseeing them that bound sheaves in the field the heat came upon his head and he fell on his bed and died in the city of Bethulia and they buried him with his fathers in the field between Dothaim and Balamo 4 So Judith was a widow in her house three years and four moneths 5 And she made her a tent upon the top of her house and put on sackcloth upon her loyns and ware her widows apparel 6 And she fasted all the days of her widowhood save the eves of the sabbaths and the sabbaths and the eves of the new-moons and the new-moons and the feasts and solemn days of the house of Israel 7 She was also of a goodly countenance and very beautiful to behold and her husband Manasses had left her gold and silver and men-servants and maid-servants and cattle and lands ‖ Or and she kept them and she remained upon them 8 And there was none that gave her an ill word for she feared God greatly 9 Now when she heard the evil words of the people against the governour that they fainted for lack of water for Judith had heard all * Chap 7 30 31 the words that Ozias had spoken unto them and that he had sworn to deliver the city unto the Assyrians after five days 10 Then she sent her waiting-woman that had the government of all things that she had to call Ozias and Chabris and Charmis the ancients of the city 11 And they came unto her and she said unto them Hear me now O ye governours of the inhabitants of Bethulia for your words that you have spoken before the people this day are not right touching this oath which ye made and pronounced between God and you and have promised to deliver the city to our enemies unless within these days the Lord turn to help you 12 And now who are you that have tempted God this day and stand in stead of God amongst the children of men 13 And now try the Lord Almighty but you shall never know any thing 14 For you cannot finde the depth of the heart of man neither can ye perceive the things that he thinketh then how can you search out God that hath made all these things and know his minde or comprehend his purpose Nay my brethren provoke not the Lord our God to anger 15 For if he will not help us within these five days he hath power to defend us when he will even every day or to destroy us before our enemies 16 Do not ‖ Or enzaze binde the counsels of the Lord our God for * Num. 23.19 God is not as man that he may be threatned neither is he as the son of man that he should be wavering 17 Therefore let us wait for salvation of him and call upon him to help us and he will hear our voice if it please him 18 For there arose none in our age neither is there any now in these days neither tribe nor family nor ‖ Or town people nor city among us which worship gods made with hands therefore we trust that he will not despise us nor any of our nation 21 For if we be taken so all Judea shall lie waste and our sanctuary shall be spoiled he will require the profanation thereof at our mouth 22 And the ‖ Or fear slaughter of our brethren and the captivity of the countrey and the desolation of our inheritance will he turn upon our heads among the Gentiles wheresoever we shall be in bondage and we shall be an offence and a reproach to all them that possess us 23 For our servitude shall not be directed to favour but the Lord our God shall turn it to dishonour 24 Now therefore O brethren let us shew an example to our brethren because their hearts depend upon us and the sanctuary and the house and the altar rest upon us 25 Moreover let us give thanks to the Lord our God which trieth us even as he did our fathers 26 Remember what things he did to * Gen. 22.1 Abraham and how he tried Isaac and what hapned to * Gen. 28.7 Jacob in Mesopotamia of Syria when he kept the sheep of Laban his mothers brother 27 For he hath not tried us in the fire as he did them for the examination of their hearts neither hath he taken vengeance on us but the Lord doth scourge them that come near unto him to admonish them 28 Then said Ozias to her All that thou hast spoken hast thou spoken with a good heart and there is none that may gainsay thy words 29 For this is not the first day wherein thy wisdom is manifested but from the beginning of thy days all the people have known thy understanding because the disposition of thine heart is good 30
burnt-offering or sacrifice or oblation or incense or place to sacrifice before thee and to finde mercy 16 Nevertheless in a contrite heart and an humble spirit let us be accepted 17 Like as in the burnt-offerings of rams and bullocks and like as in ten thousands of fat lambs so let our sacrifice be in thy sight this day and grant that we may wholly go after thee for they shall not be confounded that put their trust in thee 18 And now we follow thee with all our heart we fear thee and seek thy face 19 Put us not to shame but deal with us after thy loving kindness and according to the multitude of thy mercies 20 Deliver us also according to thy marvellous works give glory to thy name O Lord let all them that do thy servants hurt be ashamed 21 And let them be confounded ‖ Or by thy power and might in all their power and might and let their strength be broken 22 And let them know that thou art Lord the onely God and glorious over the whole world 23 And the kings servants that put III. 1 Lest their false teachers should charge him with vain-glory he sheweth the faith and graces of the Corinthians to be a sufficient commendation of his ministery 6 Whereupon entring a comparison between the ministers of the law and of the gospel 12 he proveth that his ministery is so far the more excellent as the gospel of life and liberty is more glorious then the law of condemnation DO we begin again to commend our selves or need we as some others epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you 2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts known read of all men 3 For as much as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministred by us written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God not in tables of stone but in fleshly tables of the heart 4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward 5 Not that we are sufficient of our selves to think any thing as of our selves but our sufficiency is of God 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament not of the letter but of the spirit for the letter killeth but the spirit ‖ Or quickneth giveth life 7 But if the ministration of death written and engraven in stones was glorious so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance which glory was to be done away 8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious 9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory 10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect by reason of the glory that excelleth 11 For if that which is done away was glorious much more that which remaineth is glorious 12 Seeing then that we have such hope we use great ‖ Or boldness plainness of speech 13 And not as Moses * Exod. 34.33 which put a vail over his face that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished 14 But their mindes were blinded for until this day remaineth the same vail untâ—ken away in the reading of the old testament which vail is done away in Christ 15 But even unto this day when Moses is read the vail is upon their heart 16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord the vail shall be taken away 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty 18 But we all with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as ‖ Or of the Lord the Spirit by the Spirit of the Lord. CHAP. IV. 1 He declareth how he hath used all sincerity and faithful diligence in preaching the â—ospel 7 and how the troubles and persecutions which be daily endureth for the same did redound to the praise of Gods power 12 to the benefit of the church 16 and to the apostle's own eternal glory THerefore seeing we have this ministery as we have received mercy we faint not 2 But have renounced the hidden things of †Or. shâ—me dishonesty not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully but by manifestation of the truth commending our selves to every mans conscience in the sight of God 3 But if our gospel be hid it is hid to them that are lost 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which beleeve not lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ who is the image of God should shine unto them 5 For we preach not our selves but Christ Jesus the Lord and our selves your servants for Jesus sake 6 For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us 8 We are troubled on every side yet not distressed we are perplexed but ‖ Or not altogether without help or means not in despair 9 Persecuted but not forsaken cast down but not destroyed 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body 11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus sake that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh 12 So then death worketh in us but life in you 13 We having the same spirit of faith according as it is written * Psal 11â— 10 I beleeved and therefore have I spoken we also beleeve and therefore speak 14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus and shall present us with you 15 For all things are for your sakes that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God 16 For which cause we faint not but though our outward man perish yet the inward man is renewed day by day 17 For our light affliction which is but for a moment worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory 18 While we look not at the things which are seen but at the things which are not seen for the things which are seen are temporal but the things which are not seen are eternal CHAP. V. 1 That in his assured hope of immortal glory 9 and in expâ—ctance of it and of the general judgement he laboureth to keep a good conscirence 12 not that he may herein boast of himself 14 but as one that having received life from Christ endeavoureth to live as a new creature to Christ onely 18 and by his ministery of reconciliation to reconcile others also in Christ to God FOr we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved we have a building of God an house not made with hands eternal in the heavens 2 For in this we groan earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan being burdened not for that we would be unclothed but clothed upon that mortality might be swallowed up of life 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the self same thing is God who also hath given unto us the earnest of
