either_o god_n keep_v a_o watch_n over_o he_o to_o make_v sure_o he_o may_v not_o escape_v punishment_n or_o else_o rather_o god_n observe_v every_o sin_n he_o commit_v if_o i_o sin_n than_o thou_o mark_v i_o etc._n etc._n that_o be_v thou_o take_v notice_n which_o be_v very_o hard_a of_o every_o fault_n i_o commit_v and_o keep_v a_o strict_a account_n of_o it_o resolve_v to_o let_v no_o slip_n just_a that_o i_o shall_v suffer_v what_o i_o do_v suffer_v yea_o worse_a and_o worse_o i_o may_v well_o expect_v even_o unto_o eternity_n and_o if_o i_o be_v righteous_a one_o that_o sincere_o fear_v god_n and_o desire_n to_o obey_v his_o command_n yet_o will_v i_o not_o hold_v up_o my_o head_n i_o dare_v not_o for_o that_o stand_v to_o justify_v myself_o or_o i_o can_v for_o that_o cheer_n myself_o with_o any_o hope_n or_o comfort_n and_o the_o reason_n why_o he_o say_v thus_o may_v be_v either_o because_o he_o know_v that_o however_o righteous_a he_o be_v yet_o many_o thing_n he_o so_o willing_a and_o desirous_a to_o die_v and_o to_o give_v up_o his_o life_n it_o be_v a_o phrase_n frequent_a in_o the_o scripture_n concern_v which_o see_v the_o note_n judg._n 12.3_o but_o now_o the_o first_o clause_n wherefore_o do_v i_o take_v my_o flesh_n in_o my_o tooth_n be_v far_o more_o obscure_a but_o the_o most_o probable_a exposition_n that_o i_o meet_v with_o be_v these_o 1._o some_o conceive_v that_o it_o be_v a_o ordinary_a proverbial_a speech_n in_o those_o time_n to_o say_v of_o those_o that_o be_v desirous_a to_o die_v that_o they_o take_v their_o flesh_n in_o their_o tooth_n mean_v that_o they_o be_v so_o weary_a of_o their_o life_n that_o they_o can_v find_v in_o their_o heart_n to_o tear_v themselves_o in_o piece_n thereby_o as_o it_o be_v to_o open_v a_o passage_n to_o let_v forth_o their_o soul_n and_o that_o therefore_o as_o in_o relation_n to_o the_o frequent_a profession_n he_o have_v make_v how_o earnest_o desirous_a he_o be_v to_o die_v he_o ask_v his_o friend_n here_o wherefore_o do_v i_o take_v my_o flesh_n in_o my_o tooth_n and_o put_v my_o life_n in_o my_o hand_n that_o be_v wherefore_o be_o i_o so_o eager_o desirous_a to_o die_v think_v you_o that_o i_o speak_v it_o as_o out_o of_o despair_n no_o such_o matter_n no_o though_o he_o slay_v i_o yet_o will_v i_o trust_v in_o he_o as_o he_o add_v in_o the_o next_o word_n 2._o some_o hold_n that_o because_o man_n that_o be_v inward_o enrage_v and_o torment_v in_o their_o mind_n be_v wont_a to_o tear_v their_o own_o flesh_n with_o their_o tooth_n or_o at_o least_o to_o idleness_n eccles_n 4.5_o he_o fold_v his_o hand_n together_o and_o eat_v his_o own_o flesh_n therefore_o job_n use_v these_o expression_n as_o by_o way_n of_o check_v himself_o for_o be_v so_o immoderate_o disquiet_v in_o his_o mind_n for_o any_o thing_n which_o either_o his_o friend_n say_v or_o he_o suffer_v wherefore_o do_v i_o take_v my_o flesh_n in_o my_o tooth_n &_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v why_o shall_v i_o thus_o pine_v myself_o with_o grief_n and_o eat_v up_o my_o own_o flesh_n with_o sorrow_n or_o why_o do_v i_o thus_o vex_v and_o fret_v and_o torment_v myself_o as_o one_o that_o in_o the_o indignation_n and_o anguish_n of_o his_o soul_n be_v ready_a to_o tear_v his_o own_o flesh_n and_o to_o give_v up_o the_o ghost_n there_o be_v no_o cause_n at_o all_o why_o i_o shall_v do_v thus_o though_o he_o slay_v i_o yet_o will_v i_o trust_v in_o he_o and_o 3._o again_o some_o think_v that_o the_o ground_n of_o these_o expression_n be_v either_o because_o his_o flesh_n be_v so_o chapt_n and_o break_v in_o several_a place_n that_o he_o may_v bite_v out_o piece_n with_o his_o tooth_n or_o because_o he_o be_v so_o waste_v that_o all_o his_o flesh_n will_v scarce_o make_v one_o mouthful_n or_o else_o rather_o because_o his_o pain_n and_o misery_n be_v many_o time_n so_o extreme_a and_o insupportable_a that_o ever_o and_o anon_o it_o make_v he_o ready_a to_o tear_v his_o flesh_n with_o his_o tooth_n and_o so_o the_o meaning_n of_o these_o word_n wherefore_o do_v i_o take_v my_o flesh_n in_o my_o tooth_n &c_n &c_n must_v be_v that_o he_o desire_v to_o know_v of_o his_o friend_n either_o why_o such_o grievous_a intolerable_a punishment_n shall_v be_v lay_v upon_o he_o if_o as_o they_o say_v god_n do_v only_o punish_v wicked_a man_n since_o he_o be_v not_o conscious_a to_o himself_o of_o any_o such_o horrible_a wickedness_n that_o he_o have_v commit_v or_o why_o he_o may_v not_o desire_v to_o plead_v his_o cause_n with_o god_n since_o it_o be_v evident_a he_o do_v not_o complain_v without_o great_a cause_n verse_n 15._o though_o he_o slay_v i_o yet_o will_v i_o trust_v in_o he_o etc._n etc._n that_o be_v though_o i_o be_v at_o the_o point_n of_o death_n yet_o will_v i_o trust_v in_o he_o for_o help_v yea_o though_o i_o be_v sure_a that_o god_n will_v slay_v i_o yet_o will_v i_o rely_v upon_o his_o mercy_n in_o full_a expectation_n that_o thereby_o i_o shall_v only_o be_v bring_v to_o a_o better_a life_n now_o this_o he_o add_v either_o by_o way_n of_o check_v himself_o for_o his_o former_a impatience_n and_o resolve_v from_o henceforth_o what_o he_o will_v do_v or_o else_o to_o imply_v how_o strange_a it_o be_v that_o notwithstanding_o this_o his_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o god_n he_o shall_v be_v so_o severe_o deal_v with_o or_o to_o show_v that_o though_o his_o misery_n make_v he_o complain_v sometime_o very_o bitter_o yet_o he_o do_v not_o despair_v of_o god_n love_n to_o he_o or_o else_o to_o prove_v that_o he_o be_v not_o a_o wicked_a wretch_n as_o they_o pretend_v he_o be_v and_o therefore_o be_v that_o too_o which_o he_o next_o add_v but_o i_o will_v maintain_v my_o own_o way_n before_o he_o that_o be_v though_o i_o will_v rely_v upon_o his_o mercy_n whatever_o he_o do_v to_o i_o yet_o i_o will_v plead_v my_o cause_n and_o maintain_v my_o innocency_n before_o he_o and_o that_o in_o the_o integrity_n and_o sincerity_n of_o my_o heart_n as_o know_v that_o he_o search_v the_o heart_n and_o the_o reins_o verse_n 16._o he_o also_o shall_v be_v my_o salvation_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v i_o say_v in_o the_o forego_n verse_n namely_o because_o he_o know_v well_o that_o if_o he_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n god_n will_v not_o endure_v he_o and_o this_o his_o friend_n have_v charge_v he_o with_o chap._n 8.13_o verse_n 18._o behold_v now_o i_o have_v order_v my_o cause_n i_o know_v that_o i_o shall_v be_v justify_v that_o be_v now_o i_o have_v examine_v i_o own_o conscience_n and_o have_v weigh_v and_o digest_v what_o i_o shall_v say_v in_o my_o own_o defence_n whereas_o you_o condemn_v i_o for_o a_o wicked_a hypocrite_n i_o know_v that_o herein_o god_n will_v justify_v i_o and_o so_o indeed_o it_o prove_v at_o last_o when_o god_n pass_v that_o sentence_n against_o his_o friend_n chap._n 42.7_o you_o have_v not_o speak_v of_o i_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v right_a as_o my_o of_o god_n and_o so_o the_o scope_n may_v be_v to_o show_v that_o though_o he_o have_v wish_v he_o may_v appear_v before_o god_n tribunal_n yet_o he_o do_v not_o think_v that_o god_n be_v visible_o to_o be_v see_v as_o earthly_a judge_n be_v but_o know_v that_o god_n be_v every_o where_o present_a though_o no_o where_o to_o be_v see_v as_o man_n be_v and_o 2._o of_o the_o incomprehensiblenesse_n of_o god_n way_n and_o judgement_n to_o wit_n that_o which_o way_n soever_o he_o turn_v himself_o he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o comprehend_v any_o of_o god_n judgement_n or_o to_o find_v out_o god_n by_o any_o of_o his_o work_n concern_v which_o see_v a_o former_a note_n upon_o a_o like_a place_n chap._n 9.11_o or_o 3._o of_o god_n refuse_v to_o answer_v his_o desire_n by_o manifest_v himself_o to_o he_o in_o any_o outward_a apparition_n as_o a_o judge_n offer_v to_o hear_v and_o determine_v his_o cause_n and_o so_o it_o be_v all_o one_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v i_o may_v wish_v thus_o to_o appear_v before_o god_n that_o i_o may_v plead_v my_o cause_n before_o he_o but_o alas_o i_o do_v not_o find_v that_o god_n intend_v i_o any_o such_o favour_n he_o hide_v himself_o from_o i_o in_o this_o regard_n and_o which_o way_n soever_o i_o look_v i_o find_v not_o the_o least_o likelihood_n that_o god_n will_v vouchsafe_v to_o give_v i_o such_o a_o hear_n verse_n 10._o but_o he_o know_v the_o way_n that_o i_o take_v etc._n etc._n the_o inference_n of_o these_o word_n upon_o that_o which_o go_v before_o be_v very_o questionable_a but_o two_o opinion_n concern_v this_o i_o find_v most_o probable_a the_o first_o be_v that_o these_o word_n be_v here_o add_v to_o clear_v himself_o from_o a_o false_a conceit_n that_o upon_o his_o former_a word_n his_o friend_n may_v entertain_v in_o their_o thought_n concern_v he_o and_o so_o that_o the_o meaning_n of_o these_o word_n be_v as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v though_o i_o say_v that_o i_o can_v no_o where_o find_v god_n that_o i_o may_v plead_v my_o cause_n before_o he_o yet_o i_o be_o far_o from_o the_o atheistical_a thought_n of_o those_o profane_a wretch_n that_o say_v god_n know_v not_o what_o be_v do_v here_o in_o this_o world_n for_o sure_o i_o be_o that_o though_o i_o can_v find_v he_o yet_o he_o know_v i_o and_o all_o my_o way_n which_o make_v i_o also_o confident_a that_o know_v my_o innocency_n he_o only_o intend_v to_o try_v i_o by_o these_o calamity_n he_o have_v lay_v upon_o i_o the_o second_o be_v that_o this_o be_v add_v here_o to_o show_v the_o reason_n why_o he_o desire_v to_o plead_v his_o cause_n before_o god_n or_o to_o show_v that_o though_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n of_o appear_v before_o the_o invisible_a god_n in_o a_o visible_a manner_n after_o the_o way_n of_o plead_v before_o the_o tribunal_n of_o a_o earthly_a judge_n yet_o he_o may_v safe_o appeal_v to_o god_n to_o pass_v judgement_n in_o his_o cause_n and_o that_o because_o he_o be_v sure_a that_o god_n know_v he_o exact_o and_o therefore_o though_o earthly_a judge_n not_o know_v man_n may_v upon_o false_a information_n err_v in_o judgement_n yet_o so_o it_o can_v not_o be_v with_o god_n whereupon_o he_o also_o add_v when_o he_o have_v try_v i_o i_o shall_v come_v forth_o as_o gold_n where_o by_o god_n try_v he_o may_v be_v mean_v either_o a_o judicial_a trial_n by_o hear_v he_o plead_v his_o cause_n or_o a_o try_v he_o by_o the_o affliction_n wherewith_o he_o have_v exercise_v he_o and_o so_o the_o drift_n of_o these_o word_n may_v be_v to_o show_v how_o confident_a he_o be_v that_o after_o trial_n he_o shall_v not_o be_v find_v such_o dross_n as_o his_o friend_n will_v make_v he_o but_o pure_a gold_n and_o that_o god_n mean_v no_o more_o to_o destroy_v he_o by_o these_o calamity_n he_o have_v bring_v upon_o he_o than_o the_o goldsmith_n mean_v to_o burn_v up_o the_o gold_n that_o he_o put_v into_o the_o fire_n for_o the_o try_v and_o purge_v of_o it_o verse_n 11._o my_o foot_n have_v hold_v his_o step_n etc._n etc._n this_o job_n add_v as_o by_o way_n of_o protest_v against_o those_o wicked_a practice_n wherewith_o eliphaz_n have_v charge_v he_o chap._n 22.5_o and_o by_o this_o my_o foot_n have_v hold_v his_o step_n be_v mean_v either_o that_o he_o have_v endeavour_v to_o imitate_v god_n in_o his_o holiness_n justice_n mercy_n etc._n etc._n according_a to_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n ephes_n 5.1_o be_v you_o therefore_o follower_n of_o god_n as_o dear_a child_n or_o else_o his_o strict_a tread_v in_o those_o step_n which_o god_n in_o his_o law_n have_v prescribe_v he_o so_o that_o the_o next_o word_n be_v a_o mere_a explanation_n of_o these_o his_o way_n have_v i_o keep_v and_o not_o decline_v verse_n 12._o neither_o have_v i_o go_v back_o from_o the_o commandment_n of_o his_o lip_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v i_o have_v not_o upon_o any_o pretence_n fall_v off_o from_o do_v what_o he_o have_v command_v i_o to_o the_o utmost_a of_o my_o power_n but_o rather_o have_v full_o and_o constant_o cleave_v thereto_o i_o have_v esteem_v the_o word_n of_o his_o mouth_n more_o than_o my_o necessary_a food_n that_o be_v i_o have_v more_o earnest_o obedience_n to_o god_n in_o all_o thing_n but_o he_o be_v in_o one_o mind_n and_o who_o can_v turn_v he_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v but_o alas_o be_v i_o never_o so_o righteous_a or_o let_v so_o shall_v it_o be_v with_o every_o faithful_a member_n of_o the_o church_n in_o regard_n of_o their_o constant_a perseverance_n in_o the_o right_a way_n unto_o eternal_a salvation_n only_o we_o those_o who_o the_o wicked_a seek_v to_o ensnare_v yet_o they_o shall_v flourish_v for_o all_o this_o and_o will_v be_v never_o a_o whit_n the_o less_o serviceable_a to_o god_n in_o their_o place_n for_o they_o or_o they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o desire_v to_o spoil_v other_o that_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o give_v of_o their_o own_o for_o the_o relief_n of_o other_o 3._o some_o understand_v it_o thus_o that_o the_o wicked_a desire_n to_o enrich_v themselves_o in_o their_o sinful_a practice_n and_o that_o their_o plot_n may_v be_v successful_a but_o their_o device_n be_v usual_o blast_v and_o they_o seldom_o enjoy_v the_o fruit_n of_o their_o desire_n but_o the_o root_n of_o the_o righteous_a yield_v fruit_n that_o be_v they_o only_o enjoy_v the_o fruit_n of_o their_o desire_n though_o a_o while_n they_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v in_o a_o wither_a condition_n yet_o they_o shall_v flourish_v again_o and_o 4._o some_o read_v the_o first_o clause_n thus_o the_o wicked_a desire_v the_o verse_n 13._o the_o wicked_a be_v snare_v by_o the_o trangression_n of_o his_o lip_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v he_o draw_v down_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n &_o just_a destruction_n upon_o himself_o by_o the_o wickedness_n of_o his_o lip_n or_o by_o his_o own_o word_n wherein_o unadvised_o he_o often_o overshoot_v himself_o he_o be_v many_o time_n entangle_v &_o bring_v into_o great_a trouble_n &_o inconvenience_n among_o man_n but_o the_o just_a shall_v come_v out_o of_o trouble_n to_o wit_n by_o the_o wisdom_n &_o righteousness_n of_o his_o lip_n or_o the_o meaning_n may_v be_v this_o that_o though_o he_o may_v come_v into_o trouble_n by_o the_o word_n of_o wicked_a man_n or_o by_o his_o own_o word_n whether_o by_o speak_v his_o conscience_n and_o what_o he_o ought_v to_o speak_v or_o by_o speak_v any_o thing_n unadvised_o yet_o god_n will_v deliver_v he_o out_o of_o his_o trouble_n verse_n 14._o a_o man_n shall_v be_v satisfy_v with_o good_a by_o the_o fruit_n of_o his_o mouth_n etc._n etc._n the_o drift_n of_o this_o proverb_n may_v be_v to_o show_v that_o not_o only_o the_o good_a work_n of_o the_o righteous_a shall_v be_v reward_v of_o which_o he_o speak_v in_o make_v this_o only_a to_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o last_o clause_n that_o the_o foolishness_n of_o fool_n that_o be_v of_o wicked_a man_n be_v folly_n that_o be_v folly_n indeed_o there_o be_v no_o folly_n like_a unto_o that_o folly_n verse_n 25._o a_o true_a witness_n deliver_v soul_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v by_o testify_v the_o truth_n he_o often_o deliver_v many_o innocent_a man_n from_o those_o danger_n wherein_o they_o be_v for_o their_o estate_n or_o otherwise_o by_o some_o false_a accusation_n or_o he_o deliver_v soul_n that_o be_v the_o life_n of_o man_n when_o through_o false_a accusation_n they_o be_v in_o danger_n of_o death_n see_v the_o note_n chap._n 12.6_o yea_o in_o deliver_v any_o one_o man_n from_o such_o danger_n it_o may_v be_v true_o say_v that_o he_o secret_a either_o in_o nature_n or_o religion_n which_o man_n by_o their_o knowledge_n and_o wisdom_n will_v not_o discover_v and_o very_o probable_o we_o may_v think_v that_o this_o here_o be_v add_v etc._n as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v king_n endue_v with_o these_o grace_n need_v in_o a_o manner_n no_o other_o guard_n about_o they_o both_o because_o hereby_o they_o procure_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o man_n towards_o they_o and_o likewise_o because_o they_o cut_v off_o the_o wicked_a that_o be_v perilous_a to_o they_o and_o to_o their_o throne_n but_o see_v the_o note_n chap._n 3.3_o and_o 16.6_o and_o psal_n 61.67_o as_o for_o the_o next_o clause_n and_o his_o throne_n be_v uphold_v by_o mercy_n that_o be_v add_v to_o show_v either_o that_o however_o mercy_n and_o truth_n do_v both_o tend_v to_o a_o king_n preservation_n yet_o mercy_n have_v the_o chief_a stroke_n therein_o or_o else_o that_o as_o these_o grace_n be_v a_o great_a mean_n of_o safety_n to_o a_o king_n person_n so_o they_o be_v also_o a_o great_a support_n to_o his_o kingdom_n for_o though_o mercy_n be_v only_o here_o again_o express_v yet_o
