be_v adopt_v and_o take_v in_o and_o instead_o of_o be_v nourish_v for_o money_n be_v it_o may_v be_v buy_v from_o the_o parent_n with_o money_n to_o which_o parent_n lie_v the_o great_a obligation_n if_o any_o speak_v of_o the_o affection_n of_o parent_n to_o the_o young_a this_o be_v strong_a indeed_o in_o the_o female_a but_o not_o lasting_a enough_o to_o make_v a_o family_n of_o but_o if_o the_o male_a have_v any_o thing_n hereof_o it_o be_v increase_v as_o the_o conceit_n of_o his_o propriety_n be_v for_o male_n of_o other_o creature_n use_v it_o not_o because_o the_o female_a only_o know_v her_o brood_n and_o man_n love_v their_o child_n not_o as_o they_o be_v real_o so_o but_o as_o they_o believe_v they_o so_o wherein_o no_o reveal_v natural_a sympathy_n lead_v they_o but_o opinion_n which_o many_o time_n deceive_v they_o as_o shall_v be_v more_o full_o discourse_v in_o the_o title_n of_o property_n but_o what_o be_v this_o to_o the_o natural_a duty_n of_o child_n to_o parent_n true_o this_o affection_n run_v so_o cold_o upward_o and_o so_o different_o that_o if_o god_n the_o law_n and_o the_o parent_n authority_n keep_v they_o not_o in_o duty_n when_o they_o be_v of_o equal_a power_n they_o may_v natural_o enough_o if_o the_o example_n of_o other_o creature_n may_v be_v trust_v use_v force_n against_o any_o assault_n for_o as_o each_o individual_a be_v by_o nature_n furnish_v as_o aforesaid_a with_o competent_a ability_n to_o preserve_v and_o maintain_v itself_o therefore_o the_o youngling_n that_o as_o yet_o want_v strength_n and_o understanding_n so_o to_o do_v be_v in_o nature_n account_v not_o full_o separate_v from_o the_o individual_a of_o the_o female_a but_o this_o be_v now_o effect_v it_o be_v then_o by_o natural_a course_n to_o follow_v self-guidance_n as_o the_o parent_n do_v before_o and_o last_o as_o for_o the_o power_n of_o a_o master_n over_o his_o servant_n if_o they_o be_v hire_v none_o will_v i_o presume_v doubt_v but_o that_o it_o be_v political_a and_o pactional_a indeed_o the_o government_n over_o slave_n be_v natural_a depend_v on_o force_n and_o here_o pactional_a or_o political_a precept_n meddle_v not_o leave_v they_o to_o the_o lord_n dispose_v in_o as_o high_a a_o degree_n of_o propriety_n as_o any_o other_o good_n but_o now_o while_o we_o have_v be_v thus_o vindicate_a monarchy_n against_o such_o as_o will_v not_o have_v one_o in_o a_o commonwealth_n to_o be_v as_o natural_a a_o government_n as_o that_o of_o one_o in_o a_o family_n if_o any_o shall_v think_v what_o have_v hitherto_o be_v speak_v be_v to_o take_v off_o the_o reputation_n and_o authority_n of_o the_o father_n or_o master_n of_o the_o family_n or_o to_o weaken_v the_o obedience_n of_o any_o under_o he_o they_o quite_o mistake_v our_o intent_n for_o our_o aim_n be_v to_o strengthen_v it_o that_o therewith_o the_o other_o have_v the_o same_o end_n and_o foundation_n and_o that_o more_o general_a and_o strong_a may_v be_v therewith_o strengthen_v also_o for_o as_o all_o power_n be_v from_o god_n so_o all_o obedience_n must_v run_v in_o respect_n of_o his_o command_n either_o express_a to_o himself_o or_o such_o as_o he_o have_v delegated_a and_o though_o he_o give_v to_o king_n and_o father_n so_o large_a a_o portion_n of_o his_o power_n as_o to_o enable_v they_o in_o their_o government_n here_o to_o be_v assist_v unto_o he_o in_o the_o course_n of_o humane_a providence_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o to_o idolise_v themselves_o but_o to_o think_v that_o since_o they_o be_v no_o otherways_o set_v up_o then_o by_o his_o authority_n that_o therefore_o those_o under_o they_o be_v not_o subject_v in_o that_o degree_n by_o nature_n but_o by_o his_o precept_n for_o as_o all_o thing_n shall_v refer_v to_o his_o glory_n so_o the_o near_o we_o come_v in_o our_o expression_n of_o it_o the_o better_a whereupon_o i_o conceive_v that_o the_o master_n of_o a_o family_n challenge_v obedience_n by_o god_n direct_a and_o many_o precept_n to_o that_o purpose_n give_v be_v upon_o more_o warrantable_a ground_n then_o rely_v on_o nature_n and_o refer_v to_o god_n from_o thence_o as_o at_o great_a distance_n and_o as_o this_o will_v be_v if_o well_o consider_v a_o strong_a obligation_n to_o duty_n for_o wife_n child_n servant_n etc._n etc._n so_o it_o will_v be_v therewithal_o more_o noble_a also_o if_o when_o same_o time_n may_v be_v a_o monarch_n or_o sovereign_n and_o yet_o but_o head_n of_o one_o family_n even_o as_o abraham_n though_o he_o may_v want_v unction_n coronation_n or_o other_o ceremony_n to_o entitle_v he_o a_o king_n yet_o have_v the_o same_o authority_n at_o home_n and_o force_v abroad_o as_o have_v those_o other_o four_o victorious_a king_n which_o he_o with_o his_o own_o military_a servant_n overcome_v therefore_o we_o will_v now_o compare_v the_o power_n and_o exercise_v of_o this_o government_n to_o monarchy_n as_o hereafter_o we_o shall_v that_o of_o monarchy_n to_o this_o the_o father_n we_o will_v compare_v to_o the_o king_n and_o so_o he_o be_v to_o have_v all_o those_o royal_a prerogative_n where_o he_o be_v absolute_a and_o independent_a that_o enable_v a_o governor_n in_o chief_a namely_o the_o office_n of_o supreme_a judge_n with_o its_o attendant_n the_o power_n of_o make_v and_o interpret_n his_o own_o law_n that_o be_v to_o have_v aswell_o the_o power_n to_o instruct_v and_o direct_v what_o to_o do_v as_o the_o sword_n of_o justice_n to_o punish_v those_o that_o shall_v do_v otherwise_o and_o in_o all_o these_o case_n to_o have_v the_o last_o appeal_n etc._n etc._n for_o if_o wife_n child_n or_o servant_n or_o a_o faction_n of_o they_o shall_v take_v upon_o they_o to_o decide_v controversy_n or_o to_o make_v interpret_v or_o execute_v law_n to_o that_o purpose_n without_o or_o beside_o he_o and_o not_o allow_v any_o their_o fellow_n of_o the_o family_n liberty_n to_o appeal_v to_o he_o as_o supreme_a the_o unity_n peace_n and_o government_n of_o that_o family_n be_v break_v and_o lose_v then_o as_o the_o monarch_n make_v magistrate_n so_o the_o master_n have_v power_n to_o appoint_v what_o steward_n bailiff_n receiver_n and_o other_o officer_n he_o think_v good_a without_o the_o leave_n of_o any_o of_o the_o same_o family_n then_o as_o the_o king_n let_v out_o the_o stock_n and_o wealth_n of_o his_o kingdom_n in_o several_a property_n for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o whole_a kingdom_n that_o be_v for_o increase_v of_o the_o public_a stock_n by_o private_a managery_n so_o the_o master_n entrust_v the_o wife_n child_n or_o servant_n as_o he_o see_v occasion_n take_v of_o they_o as_o the_o use_n of_o the_o family_n require_v such_o proportion_n as_o he_o think_v fit_a whether_o it_o be_v ten_o or_o twenty_o part_n of_o the_o increase_n which_o answer_v the_o tax_n in_o kingdom_n so_o last_o have_v he_o power_n over_o their_o liberty_n and_o personal_a service_n for_o his_o own_o or_o the_o family_n occasion_n but_o these_o and_o other_o similitude_n of_o jurisdiction_n will_v be_v speak_v of_o more_o large_o
under_o monarchy_n some_o have_v think_v that_o a_o family_n can_v not_o be_v right_o call_v so_o under_o such_o a_o number_n of_o person_n that_o be_v five_o at_o least_o and_o that_o in_o it_o there_o must_v he_o all_o relation_n that_o be_v of_o wife_n child_n and_o servant_n they_o may_v also_o have_v aswell_o put_v down_o servant_n of_o all_o sort_n that_o be_v slave_n too_o because_o most_o family_n in_o other_o country_n have_v they_o but_o i_o consider_v a_o family_n as_o to_o preservation_n of_o mankind_n by_o government_n and_o not_o as_o to_o the_o increase_n of_o it_o bare_o say_v that_o the_o sole_a power_n of_o each_o family_n as_o a_o family_n belong_v to_o the_o head_n thereof_o and_o that_o in_o the_o relation_n of_o master_n too_o and_o i_o do_v far_o conceive_v that_o as_o wife_n and_o child_n be_v command_v as_o member_n of_o the_o family_n where_o they_o be_v so_o if_o they_o die_v or_o depart_v the_o family_n the_o master_n do_v still_o remain_v the_o head_n of_o the_o family_n although_o he_o be_v now_o neither_o husband_n nor_o father_n and_o that_o although_o it_o be_v but_o over_o two_o servant_n aswell_o as_o before_o for_o although_o his_o power_n be_v not_o so_o extensive_a over_o few_o yet_o it_o be_v as_o absolute_a and_o the_o same_o be_v to_o be_v judge_v again_o though_o he_o have_v none_o but_o child_n or_o none_o but_o wife_n for_o though_o these_o may_v alter_v his_o relation_n to_o those_o under_o he_o yet_o have_v sole_a power_n he_o continue_v in_o the_o full_a right_n of_o government_n as_o master_n of_o the_o family_n for_o consider_v they_o in_o their_o general_a relation_n of_o governor_n and_o govern_v though_o the_o master_n from_o their_o differ_a relation_n that_o be_v under_o he_o may_v differ_v in_o notion_n or_o title_n yet_o the_o power_n be_v of_o god_n and_o not_o from_o their_o relation_n as_o inferior_n if_o the_o wife_n before_o marriage_n and_o be_v yet_o free_a make_v paction_n for_o part_n of_o his_o power_n yet_o she_o be_v so_o far_o from_o constitute_v the_o power_n belong_v to_o his_o office_n that_o he_o when_o he_o shall_v judge_v it_o necessary_a may_v reassume_v this_o for_o aught_o she_o as_o of_o proper_a power_n can_v hinder_v the_o like_a may_v be_v say_v of_o child_n and_o servant_n unto_o who_o by_o promise_n or_o without_o he_o may_v suspend_v or_o remit_v the_o execution_n of_o his_o power_n as_o he_o shall_v judge_v fit_a and_o yet_o can_v he_o be_v say_v to_o have_v derive_v power_n from_o they_o let_v we_o now_o proceed_v to_o resemble_v their_o order_n and_o relation_n and_o then_o speak_v of_o the_o anarchy_n or_o overthrow_n of_o a_o family_n the_o master_n himself_o we_o have_v compare_v to_o the_o king_n and_o now_o his_o wife_n we_o will_v compare_v to_o the_o order_n of_o priesthood_n in_o the_o kingdom_n which_o be_v to_o be_v rule_v more_o by_o love_n then_o fear_v and_o yet_o be_v to_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o same_o head_n the_o child_n we_o may_v compare_v to_o the_o nobility_n and_o magistrate_n who_o stand_v in_o degree_n between_o monarch_n and_o people_n or_o master_n and_o servant_n serve_v as_o the_o minister_n and_o conveyor_n of_o justice_n and_o protection_n downward_o and_o by_o their_o sole_a dependence_n of_o the_o good_a of_o the_o monarch_n or_o master_n serve_v as_o bulwark_n against_o any_o forcible_a attempt_n the_o servant_n in_o the_o family_n do_v resemble_v the_o other_o subject_n in_o a_o kingdom_n now_o this_o government_n in_o a_o family_n be_v change_v through_o remissness_n or_o weakness_n in_o the_o master_n as_o be_v the_o kingdom_n through_o the_o like_a in_o the_o king_n for_o if_o he_o act_v only_o by_o other_o the_o acknowledgement_n will_v follow_v the_o power_n and_o themselves_o through_o contempt_n lose_v or_o hazard_v their_o sovereignty_n as_o if_o the_o master_n be_v uxorious_a then_o as_o the_o undertake_n clergy_n can_v make_v religious_a cognizance_n stretch_v as_o far_o as_o they_o please_v so_o the_o wife_n as_o incident_a to_o woman_n be_v grow_v proud_a of_o government_n will_v as_o it_o be_v now_o her_o own_o right_a take_v all_o upon_o she_o to_o general_a discontent_n but_o if_o he_o be_v indulgent_a and_o trust_v his_o power_n to_o child_n than_o they_o neglect_v all_o above_o they_o that_o be_v power_n civil_a and_o ecclesiastical_a fall_v a_o trample_n on_o all_o the_o servant_n as_o ambitious_a noble_n in_o a_o kingdom_n till_o the_o subject_n be_v rebel_n or_o slave_n and_o last_o if_o as_o make_v himself_o equal_a with_o his_o servant_n he_o affect_v popularity_n too_o much_o he_o thereby_o lose_v his_o bulwark_n of_o nobility_n and_o religion_n thing_n of_o no_o esteem_n with_o they_o and_o lie_v as_o a_o deserve_a prey_n to_o his_o servant_n and_o subject_n next_o violent_a attempt_n let_v we_o now_o see_v their_o likeness_n in_o their_o anarchy_n if_o in_o the_o weakness_n or_o absence_n of_o the_o master_n or_o infancy_n of_o the_o heir_n the_o power_n be_v exercise_v partly_o by_o the_o wife_n follow_v with_o one_o part_n of_o the_o servant_n and_o by_o the_o child_n follow_v with_o other_o of_o the_o servant_n so_o that_o there_o be_v division_n by_o faction_n anarchy_n be_v begin_v if_o the_o wife_n prevail_v as_o in_o title_n to_o her_o husband_n or_o as_o protector_n to_o her_o son_n and_o heir_n monarchy_n be_v not_o in_o much_o danger_n because_o she_o and_o the_o clergy_n have_v great_a interest_n in_o the_o crown_n but_o if_o master_n and_o heir_n die_v in_o the_o contest_v and_o the_o child_n prevail_v and_o govern_v joint_o than_o it_o be_v one_o sort_n of_o settle_a anarchy_n which_o be_v aristocracy_n if_o the_o servant_n that_o take_v the_o part_n with_o the_o master_n title_n prevail_v against_o the_o child_n or_o the_o child_n insolence_n shall_v make_v the_o servant_n that_o follow_v they_o desert_n and_o join_v with_o other_o against_o they_o so_o as_o to_o overcome_v they_o and_o rule_v themselves_o than_o it_o be_v the_o other_o sort_n of_o anarchy_n namely_o democracy_n both_o which_o be_v upon_o the_o same_o reason_n as_o opposite_a to_o government_n in_o a_o family_n as_o in_o a_o kingdom_n but_o now_o although_o there_o be_v more_o muttering_n and_o repine_n in_o each_o family_n that_o be_v against_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o government_n of_o the_o present_a master_n thereof_o then_o be_v in_o a_o monarchy_n have_v consideration_n to_o their_o proportionable_a number_n yet_o to_o set_v up_o such_o stand_a faction_n or_o to_o prosecute_v they_o so_o far_o as_o to_o overthrow_v the_o form_n of_o government_n thereof_o can_v be_v in_o like_a manner_n subject_a to_o the_o family_n as_o kingdom_n and_o this_o because_o the_o master_n or_o his_o heir_n interest_n be_v by_o superior_n law_n ill_o uphold_v and_o then_o the_o master_n of_o all_o other_o family_n have_v concern_v in_o the_o example_n do_v so_o order_v thing_n that_o the_o faction_n of_o one_o family_n can_v never_o have_v force_n enough_o to_o prevail_v by_o precedent_n against_o so_o many_o whereas_o in_o the_o monarchy_n discontent_v party_n have_v make_v a_o faction_n so_o great_a as_o to_o overpower_v the_o appoint_a head_n therein_o there_o be_v not_o another_o present_a superior_a fear_n to_o keep_v they_o from_o destructive_a proceed_n for_o other_o monarch_n will_v rather_o help_v it_o for_o gain_v to_o themselves_o and_o other_o head_n of_o family_n will_v forward_o it_o out_o of_o consideration_n of_o their_o share_n in_o government_n when_o this_o one_o be_v take_v away_o and_o none_o can_v doubt_v but_o that_o child_n and_o servant_n be_v throughout_o as_o desirous_a and_o covetous_a of_o the_o father_n and_o master_n power_n and_o riches_n as_o the_o factious_a subject_n be_v of_o these_o of_o a_o king_n and_o will_v as_o assure_o make_v their_o association_n to_o deprive_v he_o thereof_o and_o also_o join_v in_o confederacy_n to_o enjoy_v they_o among_o themselves_o as_o the_o other_o do_v if_o they_o have_v but_o equal_a hope_n of_o prevail_a and_o of_o be_v unoppose_v and_o can_v these_o of_o a_o family_n secure_v themselves_o in_o their_o narrow_a bound_n against_o the_o prince_n and_o his_o law_n and_o the_o disturbance_n and_o intermeddle_v of_o the_o master_n of_o other_o family_n as_o well_o as_o republike_n can_v fortify_v against_o other_o monarch_n we_o shall_v soon_o find_v more_o anarchical_a family_n than_o kingdom_n i_o mean_v number_n for_o number_n for_o since_o we_o all_o know_v that_o the_o father_n estate_n be_v more_o often_o and_o with_o more_o covetousness_n seek_v then_o the_o king_n if_o father_n have_v nothing_o but_o their_o son_n conscience_n for_o their_o defence_n as_o king_n have_v they_o will_v often_o fall_v into_o worse_a fortune_n but_o monarch_n want_v first_o present_a undertaker_n of_o their_o common_a
god_n for_o have_v it_o be_v true_a that_o a_o man_n may_v have_v serve_v more_o than_o one_o master_n his_o argument_n have_v be_v nothing_o and_o why_o he_o put_v it_o in_o the_o notion_n of_o master_n and_o not_o of_o prince_n may_v be_v for_o that_o the_o jew_n have_v not_o any_o prince_n of_o their_o own_o at_o that_o time_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o polarchy_n elsewhere_o to_o make_v instance_n in_o so_o as_o his_o auditor_n may_v conceive_v how_o inconsistent_a plurality_n of_o commander_n be_v with_o that_o singleness_n which_o belong_v to_o the_o duty_n of_o obedience_n and_o therefore_o although_o he_o instance_n in_o a_o family_n because_o to_o they_o best_o know_v yet_o it_o proportionable_o hold_v in_o all_o government_n namely_o that_o entireness_n of_o obedience_n can_v only_o be_v from_o entireness_n of_o command_n for_o else_o i_o see_v not_o but_o a_o man_n may_v as_o well_o serve_v two_o or_o more_o partner_n in_o a_o family_n as_o he_o may_v do_v partner_n in_o a_o commonwealth_n but_o although_o our_o saviour_n seem_v not_o to_o point_v against_o polarchy_n express_o herein_o yet_o st._n james_n that_o know_v well_o his_o mind_n and_o perceive_v the_o mystery_n of_o antichristianism_n already_o work_v do_v it_o plain_o say_v my_o brethren_n be_v not_o many_o master_n 3.1_o know_v that_o we_o shall_v receive_v the_o great_a condemnation_n sure_o he_o mean_v not_o by_o this_o word_n many_o to_o forbid_v any_o man_n to_o be_v master_n of_o his_o own_o servant_n or_o family_n to_o which_o end_n as_o he_o do_v allow_v more_o family_n than_o one_o so_o must_v he_o allow_v several_a master_n to_o they_o nor_o can_v he_o be_v suppose_v general_o to_o reprove_v pride_n or_o any_o other_o vice_n as_o bare_o vice_n first_o for_o that_o he_o and_o be_v set_v over_o we_o into_o which_o rank_n he_o forbid_v any_o more_o than_o one_o to_o enter_v when_o he_o say_v be_v not_o many_o and_o that_o his_o meaning_n be_v of_o these_o supreme_a master_n will_v far_o appear_v by_o the_o consequential_a guilt_n likely_a to_o follow_v in_o the_o great_a account_n of_o these_o public_a steward_n although_o rightful_o undertake_v for_o in_o many_o thing_n we_o offend_v all_o that_o be_v we_o have_v so_o many_o offence_n to_o answer_v for_o in_o our_o separate_a and_o private_a calling_n already_o in_o relation_n to_o thing_n submit_v to_o our_o own_o guidance_n that_o we_o need_v not_o increase_v they_o by_o increase_n of_o our_o charge_n and_o trust_v but_o if_o any_o there_o be_v that_o do_v yet_o doubt_v that_o these_o last_o allege_v text_n prohibit_v parity_n in_o command_n do_v reach_n to_o political_n or_o state_n governor_n because_o set_v down_o many_o master_n only_o or_o that_o the_o former_a allege_v woe_n of_o solomon_n set_v change_n of_o prince_n one_o after_o another_o do_v then_o thereupon_o confess_v that_o all_o land_n and_o people_n that_o practice_v such_o seditious_a course_n be_v wicked_a inasmuch_o as_o fear_v and_o obedience_n to_o a_o evil_a king_n may_v else_o have_v be_v except_v and_o subject_n themselves_o allow_v to_o change_v he_o for_o a_o man_n of_o understanding_n without_o consideration_n that_o this_o many_o then_o in_o one_o and_o last_o what_o evasion_n will_v they_o find_v against_o the_o prohibition_n of_o many_o master_n what_o must_v it_o intend_v sudden_a succession_n too_o and_o so_o tolerate_v many_o at_o once_o to_o be_v in_o equal_a command_n either_o in_o the_o family_n or_o elsewhere_o in_o such_o sort_n as_o we_o may_v serve_v god_n and_o mammon_n both_o at_o once_o but_o not_o present_o one_o after_o another_o so_o as_o to_o change_v mammon_n to_o serve_v god_n no_o certain_o the_o word_n many_o can_v admit_v of_o no_o such_o wrest_n especial_o be_v put_v in_o the_o present_a tense_n by_o be_v it_o must_v plain_o denote_v they_o to_o be_v such_o as_o be_v to_o be_v at_o the_o same_o time_n and_o all_o at_o once_o and_o not_o such_o as_o shall_v or_o have_v be_v successive_o reign_v and_o so_o may_v come_v to_o be_v call_v many_o in_o respect_n of_o those_o many_o age_n and_o time_n wherein_o they_o reign_v for_o if_o so_o how_o shall_v we_o do_v to_o state_n and_o compute_v any_o land_n malediction_n for_o want_v of_o a_o determinate_a present_a time_n wherein_o these_o many_o prince_n may_v be_v say_v to_o reign_v more_o then_o then_o at_o another_o time_n for_o if_o succession_n be_v unhappiness_n then_o be_v all_o land_n so_o it_o be_v not_o therefore_o to_o be_v doubt_v but_o that_o solomon_n intend_v polarchy_n by_o many_o as_o the_o plain_a expression_n he_o can_v give_v thereof_o have_v not_o learn_v his_o wisdom_n from_o their_o school_n where_o the_o notion_n of_o aristocracy_n and_o democracy_n be_v invent_v or_o if_o the_o word_n open_a arm_n yet_o it_o take_v not_o off_o the_o cause_n thereof_o from_o be_v malediction_n too_o which_o be_v that_o faction_n and_o side_v which_o must_v always_o be_v where_o many_o governor_n be_v at_o once_o but_o if_o any_o there_o be_v who_o from_o god_n permission_n of_o these_o government_n to_o be_v in_o the_o world_n do_v therefore_o think_v they_o lawful_a and_o so_o be_v slow_a to_o interpret_v any_o place_n of_o scripture_n to_o make_v against_o they_o there_o be_v no_o better_a way_n to_o discover_v their_o partiality_n to_o these_o form_n above_o monarchy_n then_o by_o suppose_v the_o one_o to_o be_v put_v in_o the_o other_o stead_n and_o so_o to_o think_v with_o themselves_o if_o it_o have_v be_v say_v for_o the_o wickedness_n of_o a_o land_n one_o be_v the_o prince_n thereof_o but_o by_o many_o man_n of_o understand_v the_o state_n thereof_o be_v preserve_v and_o so_o also_o my_o son_n fear_n god_n and_o this_o or_o that_o sort_n of_o polarchy_n etc._n etc._n whither_o they_o will_v not_o thereupon_o have_v more_o ready_o conclude_v against_o monarchy_n than_o now_o against_o polarchy_n and_o hence_o as_o our_o preface_n note_v we_o may_v observe_v that_o there_o be_v not_o in_o scripture_n to_o be_v find_v the_o mention_n of_o any_o
judge_v however_o they_o may_v be_v in_o their_o sentence_n outward_o agree_v among_o themselves_o as_o in_o order_n to_o fear_v or_o other_o interest_n of_o their_o own_o nor_o can_v two_o or_o more_o person_n judge_v their_o own_o cause_n because_o of_o the_o same_o reason_n and_o also_o for_o that_o in_o this_o equality_n none_o can_v have_v whole_a interest_n or_o power_n but_o to_o make_v these_o thing_n plain_a by_o instance_n when_o any_o two_o party_n that_o be_v at_o difference_n shall_v have_v their_o cause_n decide_v by_o any_o of_o the_o ordinary_a judge_n appoint_v to_o that_o purpose_n the_o fail_v of_o that_o judge_n therein_o so_o far_o as_o to_o make_v he_o culpable_a must_v happen_v upon_o the_o ground_n before_o note_a for_o if_o he_o have_v not_o concern_v enough_o so_o as_o to_o think_v his_o duty_n honour_n and_o benefit_n to_o be_v found_v and_o establish_v by_o the_o practice_n of_o his_o employment_n of_o a_o judge_n he_o will_v then_o whole_o neglect_v it_o or_o proceed_v so_o cold_o therein_o as_o for_o want_v of_o through_o examination_n of_o the_o full_a evidence_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o thing_n on_o both_o side_n his_o judgement_n can_v be_v no_o otherwise_o then_o accidental_o true_a and_o upright_o and_o this_o inconvenience_n will_v not_o only_o be_v subject_a to_o mislead_v he_o in_o his_o first_o sentence_n and_o decision_n of_o cause_n but_o far_a also_o in_o case_n that_o bribery_n friendship_n etc._n etc._n have_v cause_v partial_a judgement_n through_o want_n of_o entire_a and_o equal_a concern_v it_o be_v the_o usual_a hindrance_n to_o all_o re-examination_n that_o shall_v arise_v from_o equity_n by_o way_n of_o appeal_n insomuch_o as_o until_o the_o oppress_a party_n can_v find_v a_o way_n how_o to_o make_v the_o redress_n of_o his_o grivance_n appear_v of_o more_o avail_n and_o concern_v to_o the_o party_n appeal_v unto_o than_o it_o be_v to_o he_o in_o the_o state_n it_o now_o stand_v he_o can_v never_o rational_o expect_v reparation_n or_o furtherance_n from_o he_o therein_o from_o all_o which_o it_o must_v come_v to_o pass_v that_o none_o but_o god_n almighty_n can_v be_v hold_v as_o the_o only_a universal_a ready_a and_o upright_a judge_n so_o far_o as_o to_o be_v the_o only_a true_a object_n of_o appeal_n because_o as_o he_o have_v only_a omniscience_n sufficient_a to_o know_v all_o circumstance_n that_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o state_v of_o equity_n in_o each_o cause_n so_o have_v he_o always_o such_o whole_a and_o high_a interest_n and_o concern_v in_o the_o good_a of_o his_o creature_n as_o to_o make_v he_o always_o ready_a to_o hear_v all_o complaint_n whereas_o all_o other_o subordinate_a judge_n must_v as_o they_o stand_v in_o degree_n below_o he_o and_o so_o difference_v in_o respect_n of_o concern_v differ_v in_o their_o readiness_n to_o entertain_v appeal_n and_o make_v redress_n by_o which_o mean_n the_o monarch_n who_o have_v high_a interest_n power_n and_o trust_v delegated_a from_o god_n and_o have_v his_o honour_n and_o interest_n of_o more_o concern_v in_o performance_n of_o act_n of_o justice_n then_o any_o other_o even_o in_o such_o degree_n that_o he_o can_v find_v any_o reward_n else_o so_o valuable_a to_o divert_v he_o must_v be_v presume_v thereupon_o the_o ready_a to_o hear_v and_o amend_v when_o any_o thing_n in_o this_o kind_n shall_v be_v offer_v and_o if_o the_o ordinary_a grievance_n of_o the_o poor_a or_o mean_a sort_n be_v not_o by_o he_o take_v into_o consideration_n like_o the_o more_o remarkable_a appeal_n from_o great_a one_o it_o proceed_v still_o from_o the_o same_o cause_n of_o want_n of_o concern_v not_o in_o he_o who_o if_o he_o be_v a_o entire_a monarch_n and_o no_o way_n make_v obnoxious_a or_o defective_a in_o propriety_n will_v hear_v poor_a and_o rich_a alike_o as_o equal_o subject_n but_o for_o want_v of_o concern_v in_o other_o person_n of_o rank_n and_o eminence_n that_o shall_v present_v it_o and_o state_n it_o unto_o he_o which_o be_v a_o thing_n so_o difficult_a to_o be_v do_v as_o experience_n tell_v we_o that_o it_o be_v the_o great_a obstacle_n of_o all_o redress_n namely_o for_o want_v of_o concern_v to_o make_v another_o take_v so_o much_o pain_n as_o thorough_o to_o examine_v the_o state_n of_o the_o grievance_n and_o so_o apply_v himself_o towards_o redress_n for_o we_o shall_v find_v all_o private_a man_n to_o be_v still_o so_o full_a of_o their_o own_o business_n as_o not_o to_o be_v sufficient_o incline_v to_o make_v any_o other_o of_o such_o equal_a concern_n as_o to_o remit_v the_o present_a care_n thereof_o to_o intend_v he_o beyond_o respect_n to_o themselves_o and_o although_o the_o sense_n of_o pity_n and_o justice_n be_v in_o all_o man_n natural_o yet_o the_o difficulty_n will_v still_o lie_v how_o for_o want_v of_o concern_v to_o make_v he_o attentive_a in_o such_o length_n of_o discourse_n as_o must_v be_v requisite_a to_o make_v my_o cause_n appear_v so_o upon_o which_o ground_n it_o be_v that_o fee_n be_v give_v to_o advocate_n councillor_n etc._n etc._n by_o those_o that_o be_v appellant_n and_o suitor_n hereby_o engage_v they_o to_o take_v their_o client_n business_n into_o concern_n and_o make_v it_o their_o own_o man_n have_v hitherto_o think_v justice_n in_o the_o abstract_n to_o be_v before_o it_o in_o the_o concrete_a as_o though_o truth_n or_o the_o affection_n or_o adjunct_n of_o thing_n can_v have_v be_v before_o the_o thing_n themselves_o but_o as_o divine_a justice_n be_v but_o the_o procession_n of_o that_o equity_n which_o reside_v in_o god_n the_o supreme_a judge_n of_o all_o whereby_o the_o affair_n of_o all_o creature_n be_v dispose_v and_o order_v according_a to_o the_o know_a measure_n and_o equality_n which_o their_o respective_a merit_n in_o relation_n to_o the_o good_a and_o oeconomy_n of_o the_o whole_a do_v require_v so_o neither_o be_v humane_a justice_n before_o the_o administrator_n thereof_o no_o more_o then_o positive_a law_n be_v before_o the_o lawmaker_n who_o by_o that_o do_v public_o determine_v what_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v do_v in_o the_o verge_n of_o his_o jurisdiction_n also_o therefore_o man_n make_v justice_n to_o be_v juris_fw-la statio_fw-la or_o dependent_a on_o the_o sentence_n or_o determination_n of_o the_o law_n can_v not_o choose_v but_o to_o have_v consider_v onward_o that_o that_o jus_o or_o law_n must_v again_o have_v dependence_n on_o the_o lawmaker_n or_o he_o that_o have_v jurisdictio_a have_v not_o a_o kind_n of_o conspiracy_n in_o the_o flattery_n of_o private_a man_n ability_n towards_o the_o judge_a right_a and_o wrong_n make_v they_o determine_v justice_n measurable_a by_o law_n and_o law_n by_o themselves_o that_o so_o onward_o public_a justice_n may_v be_v submit_v to_o private_a sense_n of_o equity_n whereby_o at_o last_o all_o shall_v resolve_v into_o opinion_n in_o which_o regard_n it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o subject_n in_o general_a do_v in_o order_n to_o obtain_v their_o fancy_v degree_n of_o liberty_n agree_v among_o themselves_o upon_o such_o maxim_n as_o they_o conceive_v restrictive_a of_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o prince_n power_n over_o they_o upon_o the_o same_o ground_n as_o servant_n use_v to_o do_v towards_o that_o of_o their_o master_n for_o so_o experience_n tell_v we_o of_o those_o measure_n of_o good_a and_o bad_a master_n which_o be_v by_o servant_n usual_o entertain_v among_o themselves_o in_o order_n to_o deny_v all_o master_n and_o their_o action_n to_o be_v good_a far_o than_o they_o be_v respective_a to_o or_o carry_v on_o towards_o their_o interest_n or_o approbation_n thus_o the_o master_n that_o be_v most_o profuse_a for_o diet_n apparel_n etc._n etc._n be_v call_v the_o best_a and_o most_o kind_a by_o his_o own_o and_o by_o all_o other_o servant_n too_o whereas_o that_o master_n that_o measure_v these_o thing_n by_o his_o own_o conveniency_n of_o estate_n etc._n etc._n and_o make_v restraint_n according_o be_v call_v churl_n and_o miserable_a and_o so_o again_o such_o master_n as_o permit_v liberty_n and_o licentiousness_n have_v the_o servant_n joint_a applause_n as_o just_a and_o kind_a unto_o they_o whereas_o such_o as_o restrain_v and_o punish_v they_o for_o fault_n be_v by_o they_o call_v cruel_a and_o unjust_a for_o how_o shall_v it_o be_v expect_v they_o shall_v like_v to_o be_v straighten_v or_o punish_v for_o what_o they_o have_v former_o approve_v nor_o can_v man_n under_o servitude_n of_o any_o kind_n separate_v themselves_o so_o far_o from_o their_o interest_n in_o relation_n that_o way_n that_o be_v in_o desire_v freedom_n as_o to_o take_v the_o interest_n of_o the_o correlate_n into_o equal_a concern_n with_o their_o own_o and_o not_o rather_o still_o to_o choose_v and_o fix_v upon_o such_o reason_n and_o maxim_n as_o shall_v most_o confine_v the_o will_n of_o their_o governor_n to_o be_v submit_v to_o they_o and_o
so_o often_o and_o so_o express_o warrant_v thereby_o as_o give_v from_o god_n the_o fountain_n of_o power_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a settle_v it_o on_o such_o devise_a order_n and_o degree_n as_o neither_o for_o number_n or_o office_n have_v direct_a authority_n or_o example_n from_o thence_o but_o it_o be_v usual_a with_o the_o opposer_n of_o monarchy_n to_o take_v their_o advantage_n against_o the_o evidence_n of_o text_n of_o this_o kind_n as_o in_o civil_a matter_n man_n be_v wont_a to_o do_v against_o those_o they_o contend_v with_o about_o any_o property_n or_o title_n for_o if_o they_o know_v the_o letter_n and_o plain_a sense_n of_o the_o law_n run_v on_o the_o side_n of_o he_o they_o oppose_v they_o then_o find_v no_o such_o ready_a way_n for_o his_o defeat_n as_o to_o entitle_v the_o king_n or_o some_o eminent_a superior_a thereunto_o even_o so_o shall_v we_o find_v king_n now_o adays_o use_v in_o the_o interpretation_n of_o many_o of_o those_o place_n of_o scripture_n which_o make_v so_o plain_o on_o their_o side_n that_o be_v when_o the_o power_n and_o perpetuity_n of_o this_o office_n be_v anywhere_o set_v forth_o they_o then_o will_v have_v the_o whole_a sense_n and_o scope_n thereof_o to_o imply_v christ_n himself_o and_o not_o this_o his_o immediate_a deputy_n by_o which_o kind_n of_o proceed_v they_o do_v by_o fact_n evident_o prove_v themselves_o guilty_a of_o that_o pride_n and_o arrogance_n they_o will_v reprehend_v in_o another_o and_o that_o it_o be_v not_o christ_n honour_n that_o be_v hereby_o seek_v otherwise_o then_o in_o order_n to_o their_o own_o for_o since_o they_o do_v allow_v he_o to_o have_v his_o depute_a officer_n among_o we_o for_o declaration_n and_o execution_n of_o his_o will_n will_v it_o not_o therefore_o follow_v that_o the_o great_a the_o honour_n and_o power_n of_o this_o person_n thus_o substitute_v be_v by_o so_o much_o will_v the_o honour_n of_o christ_n who_o he_o do_v herein_o represent_v be_v increase_v it_o be_v not_o therefore_o to_o be_v believe_v that_o subject_n of_o any_o sort_n will_v have_v thus_o justle_v with_o their_o prince_n for_o precedence_n and_o go_v next_o to_o christ_n have_v they_o not_o more_o consider_v their_o own_o honour_n to_o be_v thereby_o gain_v then_o he_o to_o be_v thereby_o lose_v but_o as_o the_o light_n of_o scripture_n shine_v undeniable_o clear_v everywhere_o on_o the_o face_n of_o monarchy_n so_o do_v it_o in_o record_n and_o practice_v also_o and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o when_o god_n appear_v for_o the_o settle_v the_o first_o moral_a law_n for_o man_n to_o live_v by_o there_o be_v not_o nor_o have_v not_o be_v in_o the_o world_n any_o but_o monarchical_a government_n settle_v when_o again_o the_o king_n of_o king_n and_o prince_n of_o peace_n christ_n himself_o appear_v as_o the_o old_a impostor_n in_o oracle_n become_v silent_a so_o all_o republike_n and_o state_n have_v hide_v their_o head_n under_o one_o monarchy_n or_o another_o and_o that_o which_o may_v be_v observable_a in_o other_o story_n be_v that_o the_o greek_n themselves_o who_o in_o restless_a wit_n be_v the_o ring_n leader_n in_o doctrine_n and_o example_n for_o all_o these_o civil_a alteration_n as_o well_o as_o in_o a_o manner_n for_o all_o heresy_n in_o religion_n and_o upon_o no_o other_o ground_n then_o with_o a_o affect_a pride_n to_o express_v their_o power_n and_o freedom_n in_o both_o above_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o world_n who_o in_o regard_n of_o themselves_o they_o style_v barbarous_a be_v at_o this_o day_n and_o so_o have_v long_o continue_v the_o example_n of_o high_a slavery_n and_o oppression_n in_o both_o kind_n beside_o these_o high_a authority_n and_o example_n that_o so_o evident_o declare_v for_o monarchy_n alone_o i_o can_v never_o tell_v how_o to_o settle_v my_o reason_n on_o any_o other_o foundation_n be_v unable_a to_o fancy_v how_o sovereignty_n can_v have_v be_v divide_v without_o divide_v obedience_n how_o unity_n can_v proceed_v from_o plurality_n aâ—d_v how_o peace_n can_v be_v among_o subject_n when_o the_o peacemaker_n themselves_o must_v be_v still_o in_o danger_n of_o variance_n with_o one_o another_o and_o far_o i_o can_v by_o no_o mean_n conceive_v but_o that_o proportionable_o as_o one_o man_n can_v not_o serve_v two_o master_n with_o equal_a duty_n and_o respect_n so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n that_o many_o master_n can_v not_o command_v or_o govern_v one_o or_o many_o servant_n with_o equal_a power_n and_o affection_n and_o therefore_o lay_v down_o for_o my_o ground_n that_o as_o death_n be_v the_o worst_a of_o evil_n to_o a_o man_n as_o a_o man_n and_o so_o also_o that_o civil_a war_n be_v the_o worst_a of_o evil_n to_o man_n as_o sociable_a it_o be_v reason_n i_o shall_v seclude_v these_o invention_n as_o fail_v of_o that_o main_a end_n of_o government_n and_o reckon_v they_o at_o best_o but_o plausible_a pretender_n thereunto_o and_o the_o same_o reason_n i_o must_v also_o give_v for_o decline_v that_o fancy_v way_n of_o sound_v government_n and_o authority_n on_o paction_n for_o while_o prince_n and_o people_n be_v hereby_o put_v to_o a_o continual_a question_n what_o these_o paction_n be_v as_o in_o a_o thing_n of_o no_o more_o evidence_n it_o must_v needs_o happen_v there_o will_v be_v produce_v instead_o of_o peace_n and_o agreement_n a_o perpetual_a ground_n to_o intestine_a dissension_n and_o rebellion_n in_o the_o survey_n of_o all_o which_o or_o any_o thing_n else_o deliver_v if_o any_o shall_v make_v objection_n of_o inconvenience_n in_o that_o degree_n of_o arbitrariness_n i_o have_v assign_v unto_o prince_n i_o desire_v to_o be_v understand_v as_o not_o think_v any_o government_n can_v be_v by_o man_n in_o this_o life_n exercise_v where_o no_o mischief_n shall_v sometime_o happen_v but_o leave_v that_o hope_n till_o we_o come_v to_o the_o government_n of_o god_n himself_o if_o the_o inconvenience_n hence_o probable_o arise_v proceed_v not_o from_o the_o form_n but_o the_o person_n if_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v not_o only_o to_o that_o but_o much_o more_o to_o other_o incident_a and_o if_o after_o and_o beside_o side_n all_o it_o still_o appear_v that_o this_o form_n be_v only_o of_o divine_a institution_n and_o example_n and_o so_o also_o more_o natural_o and_o necessary_o procure_v peace_n the_o end_n of_o government_n than_o any_o other_o i_o shall_v then_o confess_v i_o have_v arrive_v at_o the_o end_n of_o my_o whole_a labour_n which_o be_v to_o settle_v public_a peace_n and_o good_a by_o obedience_n to_o authority_n without_o reflection_n on_o the_o private_a benefit_n of_o any_o person_n therein_o likely_a to_o bear_v sway_n but_o be_v to_o write_v in_o a_o age_n wherein_o all_o man_n stand_v not_o only_o divide_v under_o that_o different_a sense_n of_o loyalty_n which_o alexander_n once_o witty_o observe_v in_o his_o two_o follower_n ephestion_n and_o craterus_n namely_o that_o one_o love_v alexander_n the_o other_o the_o king_n but_o also_o be_v to_o write_v in_o a_o nation_n wherein_o monarchy_n itself_o stand_v whole_o approve_v or_o reject_v as_o the_o person_n therein_o likely_a to_o rule_v be_v different_o consider_v as_o friend_n or_o enemy_n i_o can_v therefore_o but_o expect_v that_o from_o these_o so_o different_a and_o contrary_a interest_n of_o other_o these_o my_o write_n themselves_o shall_v also_o be_v obnoxious_a to_o as_o contrary_a censure_n that_o be_v of_o have_v reflect_v too_o much_o or_o too_o little_a towards_o the_o praise_n or_o dispraise_v of_o that_o person_n who_o they_o according_a to_o their_o several_a engagement_n will_v have_v have_v more_o open_o commend_v or_o disprove_v whereas_o i_o who_o from_o sense_n of_o the_o calamity_n of_o our_o civil_a broil_n have_v be_v draw_v to_o be_v of_o craterus_n opinion_n as_o the_o best_a remedy_n i_o can_v devise_v
