profit_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n his_o religion_n than_o they_o be_v to_o inquire_v and_o know_v what_o they_o can_v do_v and_o what_o skill_n and_o cunning_n they_o have_v in_o that_o art_n or_o science_n which_o they_o profess_v or_o else_o what_o quality_n they_o have_v and_o so_o do_v no_o doubt_n they_o be_v careful_a to_o hire_v religious_a and_o godly_a servant_n to_o do_v their_o work_n and_o business_n that_o which_o such_o servant_n shall_v take_v in_o hand_n the_o lord_n will_v much_o better_o prosper_v &_o give_v good_a success_n unto_o then_o otherwise_o if_o they_o shall_v hire_v and_o entertain_v irreligious_a and_o prophave_v servant_n as_o may_v plain_o appear_v by_o the_o example_n of_o jacob_n and_o joseph_n two_o 6._o religious_a and_o faithful_a servant_n have_v have_v servant_n dwell_v with_o they_o 3._o or_o 4._o year_n or_o more_o as_o they_o be_v ignorant_a in_o the_o ground_n and_o principle_n of_o christian_a religion_n when_o they_o come_v first_o into_o their_o service_n so_o they_o go_v from_o they_o as_o ignorant_a therein_o as_o they_o come_v and_o all_o for_o want_v of_o catechise_v be_v a_o principal_a duty_n which_o not_o only_o minister_n but_o also_o all_o christian_a master_n in_o conscience_n be_v bind_v to_o perform_v to_o their_o family_n but_o of_o this_o matter_n i_o have_v sufficient_o entreat_v in_o my_o last_o service_n of_o god_n but_o use_v they_o more_o like_a beast_n than_o man_n even_o that_o they_o may_v be_v serviceable_a unto_o they_o &_o then_o care_v not_o whether_o they_o serve_v god_n or_o the_o devil_n we_o know_v that_o servant_n look_v to_o be_v prefer_v by_o their_o master_n and_o so_o there_o be_v good_a reason_n when_o they_o have_v serve_v they_o faithful_o but_o what_o kind_n of_o reward_n be_v this_o when_o have_v bestow_v some_o earthly_a benefit_n upon_o they_o by_o have_v no_o care_n to_o make_v they_o serve_v the_o lord_n and_o sanctify_v the_o sabbath_n they_o do_v in_o the_o end_n not_o only_o make_v they_o lose_v the_o everlasting_a reward_n but_o preserve_v they_o to_o eternal_a destruction_n moreover_o there_o be_v a_o company_n of_o idle_a servingman_n servant_n who_o in_o spend_v their_o time_n all_o the_o six_o day_n have_v almost_o nothing_o therein_o to_o do_v be_v seldom_o look_v unto_o upon_o the_o seven_o day_n but_o permit_v to_o bestow_v it_o as_o vain_o as_o the_o other_o and_o as_o they_o never_o almost_o do_v any_o good_a day_n work_v to_o their_o master_n so_o much_o less_o do_v they_o spend_v any_o sabbath_n in_o the_o lord_n service_n but_o they_o especial_o be_v leave_v to_o go_v and_o come_v at_o their_o will_n other_o that_o have_v any_o office_n of_o great_a charge_n and_o attendance_n as_o the_o cook_n butler_n and_o such_o like_a in_o great_a house_n seldom_o or_o never_o come_v to_o the_o church_n and_o that_o but_o by_o piece_n either_o when_o half_o be_v do_v or_o else_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o depart_v before_o part_n to_o neglect_v the_o service_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o sabbath_n day_n and_o we_o know_v where_o there_o be_v great_a care_n to_o serve_v and_o please_v god_n by_o prayer_n the_o lord_n will_v give_v to_o they_o such_o wisdom_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o redeem_v if_o not_o the_o whole_a yet_o at_o least_o a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o day_n which_o otherwise_o will_v be_v mis-spend_v namely_o by_o let_v pass_v many_o needless_a thing_n by_o prepare_v so_o much_o before_o as_o convenient_o may_v be_v by_o rise_v so_o much_o the_o more_o early_o in_o the_o morning_n and_o by_o the_o interchangeable_a help_n of_o our_o servant_n especial_o when_o they_o will_v for_o these_o cause_n be_v content_v with_o so_o much_o the_o less_o though_o not_o in_o quantity_n for_o the_o relief_n of_o other_o yet_o with_o less_o exquisite_a and_o curious_a dress_n which_o especial_o take_v up_o the_o time_n and_o so_o we_o be_v sure_a and_o they_o that_o will_v try_v it_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o with_o a_o care_n to_o serve_v he_o and_o in_o a_o love_n to_o the_o soul_n of_o their_o brethren_n shall_v find_v it_o to_o be_v true_a by_o experience_n that_o many_o may_v keep_v holy_a the_o sabbarh_n which_o now_o do_v it_o not_o at_o all_o other_o may_v keep_v it_o more_o than_o they_o do_v which_o if_o yet_o it_o be_v think_v unpossible_a because_o we_o go_v not_o about_o to_o practice_v it_o let_v we_o but_o observe_v that_o which_o we_o shall_v see_v do_v in_o the_o house_n when_o the_o servant_n be_v very_o desirous_a to_o go_v to_o a_o fair_a and_o the_o master_n be_v as_o willing_a to_o let_v he_o go_v you_o will_v wonder_v to_o see_v how_o thing_n shall_v be_v dispatch_v up_o sudden_o and_o in_o good_a order_n they_o shall_v be_v absent_a many_o hour_n and_o yet_o not_o great_o miss_v if_o any_o thing_n be_v otherwise_o then_o be_v usual_a it_o be_v horn_n with_o because_o it_o be_v a_o day_n of_o provision_n for_o themselves_o and_o that_o day_n be_v not_o every_o day_n so_o then_o if_o the_o master_n be_v persuade_v of_o the_o lord_n day_n as_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v even_o that_o it_o be_v the_o time_n of_o make_v provision_n for_o the_o soul_n and_o be_v as_o careful_a for_o the_o soul_n of_o their_o servant_n as_o they_o be_v for_o their_o body_n and_o do_v esteem_v it_o more_o for_o their_o worship_n &_o credit_n that_o their_o servant_n be_v religious_a then_o that_o they_o be_v costly_a &_o well_o set_v out_o in_o apparel_n they_o will_v be_v better_o content_v to_o spare_v they_o during_o the_o time_n of_o that_o market_n where_o they_o may_v buy_v without_o money_n all_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n and_o the_o riches_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n whereby_o they_o shall_v not_o only_o save_v their_o own_o soul_n but_o be_v make_v more_o fit_a to_o do_v duty_n to_o their_o master_n of_o conscience_n therefore_o to_o end_v this_o point_n it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o together_o all_o up_o if_o i_o have_v oppress_v other_o how_o shall_v i_o have_v escape_v god_n judgement_n and_o when_o he_o shall_v visit_v i_o what_o shall_v i_o answer_v he_o that_o have_v make_v i_o in_o the_o womb_n have_v he_o not_o make_v he_o which_o move_v he_o to_o show_v pity_n and_o favour_n upto_o his_o servant_n because_o they_o be_v god_n creature_n as_o he_o be_v have_v not_o he_o alone_o fashion_v we_o in_o the_o womb_n hereby_o then_o may_v those_o master_n and_o dame_n see_v their_o wickedness_n who_o will_v not_o hear_v their_o servant_n speak_v but_o upon_o a_o simple_a surmise_n to_o see_v all_o thing_n neat_a and_o handsome_a and_o to_o keep_v due_a order_n and_o measure_n for_o as_o the_o sun_n in_o the_o firmament_n give_v light_a speak_v to_o all_o the_o region_n round_o about_o he_o and_o by_o his_o bright_a appear_v expel_v the_o darkness_n comfort_v and_o cheer_v the_o world_n even_o so_o like_o wise_a shall_v householder_n labour_v to_o banish_v sin_n and_o corrupt_a religion_n out_o of_o their_o dwelling_n and_o to_o be_v a_o lantern_n of_o godly_a life_n to_o comfort_v and_o shine_v to_o their_o whole_a family_n that_o so_o they_o may_v direct_v their_o life_n after_o their_o good_a example_n phil._n 2._o 15._o math._n 5._o 19_o a_o master_n ought_v so_o to_o behave_v himself_o with_o his_o servant_n that_o he_o be_v not_o too_o familiar_a with_o they_o which_o many_o time_n breed_v contempt_n but_o he_o be_v to_o admonish_v they_o often_o and_o yet_o he_o must_v not_o discourage_v they_o from_o well_o do_v nor_o be_v too_o severe_a not_o too_o partial_a but_o must_v moderate_v all_o by_o discretion_n for_o like_a as_o the_o centution_n who_o have_v many_o servant_n 8._o under_o his_o authority_n have_v they_o all_o at_o his_o they_o be_v such_o as_o have_v sell_v themselves_o to_o 9_o work_v wickedness_n it_o be_v very_o convenient_a that_o a_o master_n of_o a_o family_n shall_v so_o dispose_v and_o order_v his_o affair_n in_o such_o sort_n that_o they_o be_v not_o note_v either_o miser_n for_o their_o keep_n or_o prodigal_a for_o their_o spend_n the_o covetous_a miserable_a niggard_n pass_v great_a toil_n and_o travel_v in_o gather_v of_o riches_n danger_n in_o keep_v they_o law_n in_o defend_v they_o and_o torment_v in_o depart_v from_o they_o but_o a_o wise_a man_n be_v not_o careful_a so_o much_o for_o riches_n and_o how_o to_o live_v long_o as_o to_o live_v well_o and_o die_v well_o some_o householder_n be_v so_o 〈◊〉_d and_o spare_v both_o towards_o themselves_o and_o their_o neighbour_n that_o although_o they_o have_v much_o wealth_n yet_o they_o can_v find_v in_o their_o heart_n to_o take_v part_n in_o any_o frugal_a and_o good_a measure_n of_o those_o transitory_a blessing_n which_o god_n in_o mercy_n have_v give_v they_o but_o feed_v gross_o and_o very_o niggardly_o and_o clothe_v themselves_o very_o mean_o keep_v a_o beggarly_a house_n so_o that_o as_o the_o common_a proverb_n be_v a_o man_n may_v as_o soon_o break_v his_o neck_n as_o his_o fast_n with_o they_o so_o that_o the_o state_n of_o such_o a_o worldling_n himself_o and_o covetous_a rich_a man_n be_v most_o miserable_a upon_o who_o god_n have_v bountiful_o bestow_v great_a wealth_n and_o yet_o he_o have_v not_o the_o grace_n to_o 〈◊〉_d his_o riches_n well_o either_o to_o his_o own_o comfort_n or_o the_o good_a of_o his_o neighbour_n but_o heap_v up_o riches_n as_o the_o psalmist_n say_v and_o can_v tell_v who_o 6._o shall_v gather_v they_o this_o show_v that_o it_o be_v the_o plague_n of_o god_n that_o befall_v upon_o such_o a_o miserable_a covetous_a worldling_n when_o he_o have_v plenty_n of_o all_o thing_n and_o yet_o want_v a_o liberal_a heart_n to_o employ_v and_o use_v they_o right_o and_o therefore_o do_v thereof_o by_o their_o servant_n but_o they_o must_v either_o see_v it_o do_v or_o rather_o dispatch_v it_o themselves_o if_o it_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n and_o business_n as_o they_o can_v and_o may_v well_o do_v for_o such_o a_o lowliness_n be_v always_o join_v with_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n that_o they_o that_o be_v humble_v with_o religion_n though_o honourable_a and_o worshipful_a in_o call_v do_v not_o think_v themselves_o too_o good_a to_o do_v any_o good_a thing_n this_o undoubted_o be_v a_o thing_n great_o to_o be_v wish_v for_o namely_o that_o all_o christian_n master_n servant_n and_o
the_o dutiful_a servant_n to_o obey_v his_o love_a and_o kind_a master_n for_o as_o the_o hand_n be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o instrument_n of_o instrument_n be_v it_o indeed_o that_o serve_v to_o feed_v apparel_n and_o keep_v clean_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o limb_n and_o part_n of_o the_o body_n which_o be_v also_o call_v instrument_n so_o be_v the_o servant_n say_v to_o be_v a_o instrument_n of_o instrument_n because_o he_o keep_v all_o the_o instrument_n of_o household_n occupy_v not_o only_o to_o live_v but_o to_o live_v well_o wherein_o he_o differ_v from_o all_o other_o instrument_n for_o where_o they_o be_v thing_n without_o soul_n he_o be_v divine_o enrich_v with_o a_o soul_n and_o herein_o he_o differ_v from_o the_o hand_n for_o that_o the_o hand_n be_v fasten_v and_o unite_v to_o the_o body_n but_o he_o be_v separate_v and_o disjoin_v from_o his_o master_n and_o he_o be_v also_o different_a from_o artificer_n for_o artificer_n be_v instrument_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o proper_o they_o call_v workmanship_n but_o the_o servant_n be_v a_o instrument_n of_o the_o action_n which_o also_o be_v distinguish_v from_o workmanship_n so_o that_o the_o servant_n if_o you_o will_v right_o understand_v he_o be_v alively_a and_o several_a instrument_n of_o action_n it_o be_v very_o meet_a and_o convenient_a that_o the_o mistress_n or_o dame_n do_v not_o make_v herself_o too_o familiar_a with_o her_o servant_n or_o houshold-folke_n servant_n lest_o they_o shall_v be_v too_o bold_a to_o talk_v to_o jest_v or_o unreverent_o and_o unmannerly_a to_o behave_v themselves_o towards_o she_o and_o so_o modest_o and_o wise_o to_o bear_v herself_o among_o her_o servant_n that_o they_o may_v fear_v reverence_n and_o so_o stand_v in_o awe_n of_o she_o as_o the_o mistress_n and_o mother_n of_o the_o house_n and_o as_o it_o be_v not_o comely_a or_o beseem_a that_o the_o wife_n shall_v take_v upon_o she_o to_o rule_v and_o correct_v the_o men-seruant_n so_o likewise_o it_o be_v not_o comely_a maid_n or_o meet_v that_o the_o husband_n shall_v meddle_v with_o the_o punish_n or_o chastise_v of_o the_o maidservant_n so_o that_o it_o be_v most_o meet_a and_o acceptable_a govern_v while_o they_o live_v but_o also_o that_o after_o their_o death_n love_n peace_n quietness_n and_o good_a order_n may_v be_v continue_v in_o their_o posterity_n the_o servant_n duty_n towards_o their_o master_n this_o duty_n confi_v in_o three_o point_n 1._o first_o that_o servant_n and_o apprentice_n do_v from_o their_o heart_n cheerful_o and_o willing_o perform_v the_o labour_n and_o work_n that_o their_o master_n mistress_n or_o dame_n shall_v command_v they_o 2._o second_o that_o they_o be_v faithful_a in_o thing_n commit_v to_o they_o by_o their_o master_n mistress_n or_o dame_n that_o so_o they_o may_v keep_v their_o good_n 3._o three_o that_o they_o be_v careful_a to_o observe_v uprightness_n of_o manner_n that_o the_o wife_n son_n and_o daughter_n or_o other_o fellow_n servant_n be_v not_o corrupt_v by_o their_o bad_a counsel_n or_o lewd_a behaviour_n these_o point_n be_v plain_o prove_v by_o these_o place_n of_o scripture_n quote_v in_o the_o margin_n 2.18.19.20.21_o whereby_o servant_n be_v straight_o charge_v reverent_o and_o faithful_o to_o obey_v their_o bodily_a master_n mistress_n and_o dame_n in_o all_o thing_n which_o may_v be_v do_v without_o offence_n to_o god_n and_o this_o obedience_n and_o service_n must_v be_v do_v with_o fear_n 9_o and_o tremble_a in_o singleness_n of_o heart_n as_o unto_o christ_n they_o be_v 〈◊〉_d with_o a_o reverence_n to_o godward_o as_o though_o they_o serve_v god_n himself_o and_o that_o as_o well_o in_o the_o absence_n of_o their_o master_n mistress_n or_o dame_n as_o in_o their_o presence_n not_o constrain_o as_o it_o be_v force_v or_o compel_v thereto_o but_o hearty_o and_o with_o good_a will_n as_o they_o that_o serve_v the_o lord_n and_o not_o man_n not_o only_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o earthly_a reward_n but_o because_o they_o know_v and_o be_v assure_v that_o of_o the_o lord_n they_o shall_v receive_v the_o reward_n of_o inheritance_n in_o as_o much_o as_o they_o serve_v the_o lord_n christ._n so_o that_o hereby_o all_o godly_a servant_n may_v in_o few_o word_n learn_v what_o duty_n they_o owe_v to_o their_o master_n mistress_n and_o dame_n namely_o to_o love_v they_o and_o to_o be_v affection_a towards_o they_o as_o a_o dutiful_a child_n be_v to_o his_o 〈◊〉_d to_o be_v reverend_a servant_n and_o lowly_a to_o they_o in_o their_o word_n and_o gesture_n to_o suffer_v and_o forbear_v they_o to_o obey_v with_o ready_a and_o willing_a mind_n all_o their_o lawful_a and_o reasonable_a commandment_n to_o fear_v they_o and_o to_o be_v loath_a to_o displease_v they_o to_o be_v faithful_a and_o trusty_a to_o they_o and_o they_o in_o deed_n and_o promise_n to_o be_v diligent_a and_o serviceable_a to_o speak_v cheerful_o to_o answer_v discreet_o not_o over_o bold_o to_o and_o dame_n honesty_n credit_n and_o profit_n and_o that_o as_o well_o when_o they_o be_v absent_a and_o out_o of_o sight_n as_o when_o they_o be_v present_a and_o look_v on_o this_o be_v a_o quality_n and_o property_n belong_v to_o every_o good_a servant_n both_o man_n and_o maid_n to_o wit_n that_o whatsoever_o good_n or_o necessary_n of_o their_o master_n mistress_n or_o dame_n they_o shall_v have_v charge_n of_o as_o commit_v to_o their_o trust_n and_o keep_n they_o careful_o see_v such_o thing_n so_o well_o and_o orderly_o place_v and_o lay_v up_o that_o if_o there_o shall_v be_v at_o any_o time_n any_o just_a occasion_n to_o use_v any_o necessary_a in_o their_o custody_n yea_o if_o it_o be_v in_o the_o night_n season_n and_o that_o without_o a_o light_n they_o than_o not_o quiet_a marriage_n or_o unity_n where_o he_o and_o his_o wife_n do_v not_o agree_v in_o will_n and_o mind_n the_o which_o two_o be_v the_o beginning_n and_o seat_n of_o all_o amity_n and_o
