know_v more_o than_o his_o master_n all_o which_o notwithstanding_o absolute_o speak_v the_o man_n that_o be_v at_o first_o but_o a_o scholar_n in_o a_o art_n may_v arrive_v at_o last_o to_o a_o perfection_n in_o that_o art_n much_o above_o his_o master_n but_o this_o must_v be_v by_o his_o own_o better_a industry_n or_o by_o some_o other_o great_a help_n than_o any_o his_o master_n be_v able_a to_o afford_v he_o and_o then_o he_o be_v no_o scholar_n as_o to_o that_o particular_a wherein_o he_o excel_v his_o master_n but_o rather_o his_o master_n may_v in_o that_o become_v his_o scholar_n so_o when_o it_o be_v say_v every_o one_o shall_v be_v perfect_a if_o he_o be_v as_o his_o master_n it_o be_v understand_v in_o that_o which_o the_o master_n can_v teach_v and_o wherein_o the_o scholar_n be_v to_o learn_v not_o in_o any_o other_o particular_a and_o true_o this_o place_n be_v a_o good_a incitement_n towards_o humility_n in_o those_o who_o think_v themselves_o grand_a sin_n be_v so_o far_o forth_o against_o nature_n as_o it_o be_v against_o reason_n i_o think_v i_o shall_v not_o exceed_v verity_n in_o that_o assertion_n and_o since_o all_o that_o man_n do_v like_o interrupt_v the_o connexion_n of_o those_o that_o must_v be_v bring_v together_o in_o the_o exposition_n though_o deliver_v asunder_o by_o the_o preacher_n as_o also_o because_o these_o two_o verse_n be_v clear_v first_o will_v give_v a_o open_a gate_n to_o the_o understanding_n or_o introspection_n into_o the_o rest_n let_v we_o therefore_o begin_v with_o the_o nine_o verse_n 9_o 10._o though_o s._n luke_n do_v here_o seem_v to_o tell_v we_o the_o apostle_n themselves_o do_v ask_v the_o meaning_n of_o this_o parable_n express_v in_o the_o four_o verse_n above_o as_o if_o they_o be_v in_o the_o ship_n with_o christ_n be_v whole_o ignorant_a thereof_o and_o have_v no_o regard_n unto_o the_o people_n on_o the_o shore_n yet_o saint_n matthew_n in_o his_o thirteen_o chapter_n recount_v the_o same_o passage_n make_v the_o disciple_n ask_v our_o saviour_n the_o meaning_n of_o this_o parable_n for_o the_o people_n sake_n say_v why_o do_v you_o speak_v in_o parable_n unto_o the_o people_n as_o if_o they_o have_v tell_v he_o it_o be_v lose_v labour_n in_o regard_n they_o on_o snoar_n do_v not_o understand_v he_o which_o may_v import_v the_o disciple_n themselves_o be_v not_o altogether_o ignorant_a of_o his_o meaning_n deliver_v in_o this_o dark_a parabolicall_a sense_n and_o yet_o to_o these_o disciple_n after_o he_o have_v leave_v the_o people_n lose_v as_o it_o be_v in_o their_o understanding_n our_o saviour_n full_o explicate_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o parable_n and_o this_o seem_v the_o reason_n why_o the_o interjection_n of_o these_o verse_n the_o nine_o and_o the_o ten_o do_v interrupt_v this_o sermon_n of_o our_o saviour_n because_o the_o parabolicall_a sense_n thereof_o be_v only_o deliver_v to_o the_o people_n and_o his_o clear_a meaning_n be_v afterward_o declare_v to_o the_o apostle_n but_o we_o must_v here_o solve_v a_o difficulty_n before_o we_o proceed_v further_o and_o that_o be_v to_o give_v the_o reason_n why_o our_o saviour_n who_o do_v nothing_o in_o vain_a shall_v upon_o design_n lose_v his_o labour_n that_o be_v to_o say_v preach_v to_o a_o people_n who_o do_v not_o understand_v one_o word_n of_o his_o sermon_n nay_o why_o he_o shall_v so_o couch_v his_o speech_n as_o to_o make_v they_o not_o intelligible_a by_o the_o people_n as_o if_o he_o be_v resolve_v to_o take_v away_o the_o little_a understanding_n they_o have_v before_o by_o this_o present_a parabolicall_a expression_n of_o his_o mind_n unto_o they_o and_o indeed_o saint_n matthew_n in_o relate_v this_o story_n tell_v we_o as_o much_o in_o plain_a term_n say_v our_o saviour_n answer_v his_o disciple_n to_o this_o question_n in_o these_o term_n chap._n 13._o ver_fw-la 12._o he_o that_o have_v to_o he_o shall_v be_v give_v and_o he_o shall_v abound_v but_o he_o that_o have_v not_o even_o that_o whiâ—h_v he_o have_v shall_v be_v take_v from_o he_o this_o be_v his_o answer_n be_v ask_v why_o he_o speak_v to_o the_o ignorant_a people_n in_o this_o parable_n and_o his_o meaning_n in_o this_o be_v as_o follow_v to_o you_o my_o belove_a disciple_n that_o have_v some_o faith_n in_o i_o i_o shall_v give_v more_o and_o you_o shall_v thereby_o abound_v not_o only_o in_o belief_n but_o in_o all_o knowledge_n that_o follow_v the_o singular_a gift_n of_o faith_n but_o since_o these_o people_n notwithstanding_o all_o i_o have_v say_v to_o they_o of_o my_o be_v the_o messiah_n all_o what_o my_o life_n tell_v they_o be_v foretell_v by_o the_o prophet_n concern_v i_o nay_o all_o the_o miracle_n i_o have_v wrought_v in_o capernaum_n among_o they_o and_o elsewhere_o will_v not_o believe_v in_o i_o and_o since_o i_o know_v they_o come_v now_o most_o of_o they_o out_o of_o curiosity_n rather_o than_o zeal_n many_o out_o of_o malice_n to_o laugh_v and_o scorn_n at_o my_o doctrine_n to_o these_o therefore_o that_o have_v not_o the_o gift_n of_o faith_n which_o you_o have_v i_o shall_v by_o my_o speech_n take_v away_o from_o they_o what_o they_o have_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n than_o you_o their_o natural_a ability_n their_o learning_n their_o so_o much_o vaunt_a understanding_n in_o the_o scripture_n for_o they_o shall_v be_v blind_v so_o as_o not_o to_o see_v what_o be_v clear_o set_v before_o their_o eye_n nor_o understand_v what_o be_v as_o plain_a as_o their_o alphabet_n unto_o they_o for_o so_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o messiah_n to_o the_o doctor_n scribe_n and_o pharisee_n when_o christ_n appear_v and_o yet_o none_o of_o they_o will_v believe_v he_o to_o be_v the_o expect_a redeemer_n of_o the_o world_n in_o a_o word_n to_o these_o what_o they_o have_v shall_v be_v take_v from_o they_o namely_o their_o be_v the_o elect_a of_o god_n the_o synagogue_n the_o master_n of_o a_o law_n these_o prerogative_n i_o will_v take_v from_o they_o they_o shall_v be_v cast_v out_o of_o all_o favour_n both_o of_o god_n and_o man_n their_o synagogue_n shall_v be_v efface_v and_o their_o law_n abolish_v abrogate_a antiquate_a and_o in_o testimony_n of_o all_o this_o i_o speak_v now_o to_o they_o purposely_o to_o prevent_v their_o design_n of_o scoff_v at_o what_o i_o say_v because_o i_o will_v not_o speak_v to_o be_v understand_v by_o they_o yet_o withal_o in_o regard_n there_o be_v some_o few_o among_o they_o who_o have_v a_o little_a zeal_n therefore_o i_o speak_v in_o parable_n at_o least_o
person_n of_o another_o man_n so_o he_o can_v mean_v himself_o when_o he_o say_v the_o lord_n but_o must_v needs_o mean_v the_o bailiff_n real_a master_n do_v praise_v his_o own_o bailiff_n of_o iniquity_n that_o be_v do_v commend_v the_o invention_n or_o manner_n of_o the_o cheat_n not_o the_o cheat_n itself_o and_o say_v that_o the_o child_n of_o this_o world_n use_v more_o wisdom_n and_o prudence_n in_o their_o worldly_a way_n than_o the_o child_n of_o light_n this_o may_v put_v we_o in_o mind_n how_o ill_o it_o be_v that_o we_o study_v more_o to_o damn_v then_o to_o save_v our_o soul_n 9_o this_o verse_n clear_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o former_a to_o be_v speak_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o master_n to_o the_o bailiff_n for_o here_o christ_n have_v tell_v we_o that_o master_n sense_n now_o make_v profession_n to_o speak_v in_o his_o own_o name_n in_o these_o word_n i_o say_v unto_o you_o give_v alm_n do_v good_a deed_n unto_o the_o poor_a with_o your_o mammon_n of_o iniquity_n your_o treasure_n for_o by_o virtue_n of_o these_o alm_n the_o poor_a may_v plead_v your_o admittance_n into_o heaven_n and_o obtain_v by_o their_o intercession_n that_o your_o alm_n may_v cover_v a_o multitude_n of_o your_o sin_n so_o this_o be_v a_o parable_n speak_v proper_o to_o rich_a man_n of_o this_o world_n who_o be_v not_o true_a lord_n of_o their_o own_o estate_n but_o they_o be_v such_o to_o god_n the_o application_n 1._o this_o gospel_n be_v whole_o parabolical_a we_o be_v at_o the_o great_a liberty_n to_o make_v our_o application_n thereof_o according_a as_o we_o can_v best_o avail_v ourselves_o by_o it_o further_o than_o what_o by_o the_o illustration_n and_o explication_n above_o be_v already_o do_v first_o therefore_o albeit_o this_o parable_n aim_v direct_o at_o rectify_v the_o inordinate_a excess_n of_o rich_a man_n who_o abuse_v the_o trust_n god_n have_v repose_v in_o they_o of_o relieve_v the_o poor_a when_o they_o lavish_a away_o their_o estate_n vain_o and_o do_v not_o by_o their_o charity_n pay_v the_o poor_a man_n portion_n which_o be_v include_v in_o the_o rich_a man_n revenue_n yet_o we_o may_v very_o proper_o here_o mind_v the_o priest_n of_o god_n holy_a church_n that_o as_o they_o be_v indeed_o the_o chief_a bailiff_n of_o their_o heavenly_a master_n trust_v with_o more_o of_o his_o estate_n and_o treasure_n than_o all_o the_o world_n beside_o namely_o the_o receive_n and_o distribute_v his_o holy_a grace_n the_o livelyhood_n of_o their_o own_o and_o other_o man_n soul_n so_o when_o they_o waste_v these_o treasure_n either_o by_o their_o own_o idle_a mispend_v they_o or_o by_o their_o undue_a dispense_n they_o to_o other_o especial_o by_o palliate_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o people_n and_o flatter_v they_o with_o needless_a dispensation_n from_o their_o christian_a duty_n never_o valid_a but_o when_o real_o necessary_a then_o be_v they_o most_o proper_o such_o ill_a bailiff_n as_o this_o gospel_n specify_v 2._o second_o in_o regard_n there_o be_v no_o layman_n free_a from_o the_o bailifship_n of_o a_o huge_a though_o lesser_o trust_v also_o repose_v in_o he_o by_o almighty_a god_n of_o all_o those_o rich_a grace_n virtue_n and_o gift_n which_o be_v bestow_v upon_o we_o in_o holy_a baptism_n therefore_o every_o layman_n as_o well_o as_o the_o priest_n may_v pious_o fear_v he_o play_v this_o ill_a bailiff_n part_n and_o that_o chief_o out_o of_o this_o root_n his_o giving_z way_n to_o unjust_a thought_n such_o as_o propend_v he_o to_o unrighteous_a action_n by_o not_o be_v reject_v but_o dispute_v with_o until_o the_o temptation_n of_o sordid_a gain_n or_o pleasure_n overcome_v he_o and_o make_v he_o unjust_o act_v that_o which_o at_o first_o be_v but_o unright_o think_v 3._o now_o this_o evil_a holy_a church_n hope_v to_o amend_v in_o we_o by_o prayer_n adapt_v to_o the_o bailifship_n we_o be_v entrust_v with_o absolute_o of_o our_o own_o soul_n and_o partly_o of_o our_o neighbour_n too_o in_o point_n of_o edification_n to_o he_o at_o least_o whereby_o we_o be_v charitable_o to_o contribute_v also_o to_o his_o salvation_n which_o we_o shall_v then_o perform_v in_o act_n if_o our_o thought_n be_v first_o set_v upon_o the_o do_v it_o thus_o we_o see_v how_o the_o debt_n we_o owe_v of_o charity_n to_o our_o neighbour_n put_v we_o in_o mind_n of_o the_o great_a debt_n we_o owe_v thereof_o unto_o ourselves_o and_o to_o almighty_a god_n and_o by_o this_o charity_n it_o be_v we_o be_v best_a able_a to_o perform_v what_o we_o this_o day_n pray_v for_o with_o holy_a church_n that_o by_o always_o think_v thus_o charitable_o right_a we_o may_v do_v upright_o we_o may_v live_v spiritual_o to_o that_o good_a god_n without_o who_o we_o have_v neither_o incense_n etc._n etc._n the_o prayer_n let_v the_o ear_n of_o thy_o mercy_n o_o lord_n be_v open_a to_o the_o prayer_n of_o thy_o suppliant_n and_o to_o the_o end_n thou_o may_v grant_v the_o thing_n desire_v to_o those_o that_o ask_v make_v they_o ask_v such_o thing_n as_o to_o thou_o be_v please_v the_o illustration_n bless_a jesus_n that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v teach_v we_o perfection_n of_o prayer_n in_o a_o language_n argue_v imperfection_n in_o almighty_a god_n mutation_n from_o his_o not_o bear_v to_o the_o open_n of_o his_o merciful_a ear_n to_o the_o prayer_n of_o his_o suppliant_n whereas_o his_o eye_n be_v always_o open_a to_o see_v our_o action_n his_o car_n can_v be_v shut_v from_o our_o petition_n since_o we_o can_v as_o little_a speak_v what_o he_o do_v not_o hear_v as_o we_o can_v do_v what_o he_o do_v not_o see_v it_o be_v not_o therefore_o because_o he_o at_o any_o time_n hear_v we_o not_o but_o that_o we_o deserve_v not_o to_o be_v hear_v sometime_o even_o when_o we_o pretend_v to_o pray_v that_o we_o be_v teach_v to_o beg_v his_o open_a ear_n to_o our_o petition_n and_o that_o if_o we_o will_v hope_v to_o be_v hear_v we_o must_v ask_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v please_v to_o his_o divine_a majesty_n rather_o than_o what_o be_v desire_v by_o we_o wherefore_o we_o be_v teach_v by_o our_o saviour_n himself_o to_o pray_v that_o the_o will_n of_o god_n may_v be_v do_v in_o earth_n as_o it_o be_v in_o heaven_n which_o in_o effect_n though_o in_o other_o term_n we_o pray_v to_o day_n when_o we_o beg_v that_o to_o the_o end_n god_n may_v grant_v what_o we_o desire_v he_o will_v make_v we_o ask_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v please_v to_o his_o divine_a majesty_n yes_o belove_a this_o be_v the_o full_a scope_n and_o sense_n of_o the_o prayer_n above_o and_o by_o this_o we_o see_v it_o be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o spirit_n that_o now_o dictate_v the_o form_n of_o prayer_n to_o holy_a church_n which_o our_o bless_a saviour_n have_v when_o in_o the_o garden_n he_o give_v we_o the_o most_o excellent_a method_n of_o pray_v call_v to_o this_o very_a day_n our_o lord_n prayer_n only_o this_o we_o find_v peculiar_a now_o that_o all_o prayer_n of_o holy_a church_n be_v so_o set_v after_o the_o stile_n of_o our_o lord_n prayer_n which_o alone_o include_v all_o the_o request_n we_o be_v able_a to_o make_v that_o they_o be_v adapt_v of_o god_n almighty_n promise_n by_o love_v these_o his_o easy_a his_o sweet_a his_o save_a commandment_n which_o be_v the_o continual_a exercise_n of_o these_o theological_a virtue_n whereby_o we_o we_o can_v be_v withdraw_v from_o the_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o direct_v to_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v to_o say_v take_v off_o from_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v hurtful_a and_o direct_v to_o those_o that_o be_v save_v and_o what_o else_o be_v the_o whole_a epistle_n but_o a_o exhortation_n to_o leave_v off_o the_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o to_o pursue_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n again_o what_o be_v the_o two_o master_n which_o the_o gospel_n say_v we_o can_v serve_v at_o once_o but_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n what_o the_o drift_n of_o all_o the_o gospel_n but_o to_o dehort_v from_o one_o and_o exhort_v unto_o the_o other_o so_o here_o epistle_n prayer_n and_o gospel_n speak_v all_o one_o thing_n how_o several_a soever_o the_o language_n be_v of_o each_o and_o no_o marvel_n because_o the_o spirit_n of_o almighty_a god_n be_v able_a to_o animate_v all_o the_o creature_n of_o the_o world_n act._n 17.28_o for_o it_o be_v he_o in_o who_o we_o beg_v the_o church_n may_v be_v keep_v for_o though_o above_o we_o call_v that_o propitiation_n a_o effect_n of_o our_o savior_n passion_n yet_o here_o we_o must_v further_o give_v a_o reason_n why_o we_o do_v so_o call_v it_o and_o also_o why_o we_o in_o the_o prayer_n affirm_v the_o same_o to_o be_v a_o perpetual_a effect_n thereof_o know_v therefore_o it_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o his_o passion_n because_o it_o be_v not_o only_o a_o satisfaction_n for_o sin_n but_o also_o a_o pacification_n of_o god_n wrath_n against_o mankind_n who_o by_o sin_n have_v provoke_v almighty_a god_n to_o the_o subsistence_n only_o of_o humane_a mortality_n since_o it_o be_v a_o remedy_n provide_v only_o to_o recover_v so_o often_o as_o they_o chance_v to_o fall_v mortal_a man_n and_o not_o any_o other_o mortal_a creature_n beside_o either_o terrestrial_a or_o celestial_a and_o thus_o the_o stile_n of_o humane_a mortality_n be_v most_o apposite_a because_o man_n only_o have_v the_o happiness_n of_o mercy_n to_o be_v show_v he_o for_o his_o sin_n which_o be_v a_o favour_n never_o do_v to_o any_o angel_n whatsoever_o and_o this_o mercy_n be_v just_a the_o same_o which_o this_o present_a
