nisi_fw-la dominus_n frustra_fw-la act_z anent_o women-servant_n in_o tavern_n etc._n etc._n edinburgh_n 13._o of_o december_n 1699._o the_o which_o day_n the_o lord_n provost_n baily_n and_o council_n of_o this_o city_n consider_v that_o by_o several_a act_n make_v and_o proclamation_n emit_v by_o they_o pursuant_n to_o many_o act_n of_o parliament_n and_o act_n of_o the_o general_n convention_n of_o the_o royal_a burrows_n the_o keep_v and_o employ_v of_o women-servant_n for_o retail_v liquor_n in_o tavern_n cellar_n drinking-shop_n and_o other_o place_n where_o liquor_n be_v sell_v by_o retail_n be_v peremtorly_a discharged_n as_o a_o great_a snare_n to_o the_o youth_n and_o occasion_n of_o lewdness_n and_o debauchry_n and_o also_o consider_v that_o the_o person_n concern_v have_v be_v so_o far_o from_o give_v obedience_n to_o these_o laudable_a act_n and_o proclamation_n that_o on_o the_o contrair_a they_o have_v entertain_v and_o yet_o keep_v in_o their_o service_n for_o vend_v and_o retail_v ale_n and_o other_o liquor_n in_o cellar_n and_o other_o place_n abovementioned_a woman_n who_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o fornication_n which_o practice_n have_v yet_o a_o more_o dangerous_a tendency_n to_o the_o corrupt_a of_o youth_n and_o will_v in_o all_o probability_n occasion_n a_o great_a growth_n of_o immorality_n which_o do_v already_o too_o much_o abound_v to_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n and_o scandal_n of_o christianity_n therefore_o the_o magistrate_n and_o town-council_n of_o this_o city_n for_o suppress_v and_o restrain_v such_o dangerous_a and_o evil_a custom_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n until_o method_n shall_v be_v fall_v upon_o for_o put_v in_o execution_n the_o foresay_a act_n against_o retailling_a liquor_n by_o women-servant_n in_o general_a and_o without_o any_o prejudice_n thereto_o do_v peremptorly_a discharge_v all_o vintner_n taverner_n innkeeper_n and_o other_o to_o employ_v and_o keep_v in_o their_o service_n such_o woman_n as_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o fornication_n or_o shall_v be_v guilty_a thereof_o in_o time-coming_a for_o retailling_a wine_n ale_z or_o other_o liquor_n in_o house_n shop_n cellar_n and_o other_o place_n within_o this_o city_n and_o suburb_n under_o the_o penalty_n of_o one_o hundred_o pound_n scot_n to_o be_v pay_v by_o the_o master_n or_o mistress_n where_o such_o servant_n shall_v be_v find_v toties_fw-la quoties_fw-la they_o be_v conscious_a of_o the_o say_a gild_n of_o their_o servant_n attour_n the_o servant_n banishment_n and_o ordain_v such_o master_n and_o mistress_n as_o have_v such_o servant_n for_o retail_v at_o present_a to_o remove_v they_o from_o the_o say_a service_n immedia_o under_o the_o penalty_n aforesaid_a certify_v all_o such_o master_n mistress_n and_o servant_n who_o shall_v contraveen_n that_o the_o foresay_a penalty_n shall_v be_v inflict_v and_o exact_v without_o abatement_n and_o that_o the_o master_n and_o mistress_n shall_v be_v liable_a from_o such_o time_n as_o their_o knowledge_n of_o their_o servant_n gild_n after_o this_o proclamation_n shall_v be_v prove_v and_o separat_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v repute_n to_o have_v know_v from_o and_o after_o due_a and_o just_a intimation_n of_o the_o say_a gild_n make_v by_o the_o elder_n or_o church_n thesaurer_n and_o to_o the_o end_n this_o act_n may_v be_v more_o effectual_o and_o punctual_o observe_v the_o council_n recommend_v to_o the_o elder_n &_o deacon_n and_o church-thesaur_a for_o the_o time_n to_o search_v their_o respective_a bound_n term_o or_o often_o as_o need_n require_v that_o they_o may_v discover_v such_o servant-woman_n and_o if_o any_o be_v find_v to_o dilate_v they_o and_o their_o master_n or_o mistress_n to_o the_o magistrate_n to_o be_v fine_v and_o punish_v according_o and_o appoint_v this_o act_n to_o be_v publish_v in_o the_o usual_a manner_n and_o print_v that_o none_o may_v pretend_v ignorance_n extract_v james_n stvart_n
