BY THE KING A Proclamation for recalling His Maiesties Subiects from the Seminaries beyond the Seas and putting the Lawes against Iesuites and Popish Priests in execution THE Kings most Excellent Maiestie being lately put in minde by the humble petition of the Lords spirituall and temporall and Commons assembled in Parliament of the increase of Papists within His Maiesties Dominions and the dangerous consequences of the same And discerning thereby to his exceeding ioy and comfort in t hat representatiue body of this Realme in his louing Subiects in general a true hearty zeale affection to God's true Religion which he well knoweth hath only power to bind the conscience to loyalty and obedience is desirous that His faithfull Subiects may reciprocally take notice of His Maiesties readines constant resolution to maintaine the same true Religion professed and by Law established within this Realme and vpon all occasions to suppresse the contrary And therefore whereas His Maiestie hath bin informed that diuers Children both of Noblemen and others His naturall Subiects haue bin heretofore sent ouer into the Seminaries Schooles or other Houses of Popish religion beyond the Seas and are there remaining to be brought vp contrary to the Lawes here established His Maiesty straitly chargeth and commandeth That all the said Children doe before Christmas day next returne into their Natiue Countries and submit themselues to His Maiestie's Lawes conforme themselues to liue in such duty obedience as becommeth good Subiects And that their Parents Tutors Gouernors such others as haue bin or are faulty either in sending permitting or maintaining them there take present order to recall them home to prouide that they be returned into their own Countries vpon the day aforesaid vpon paine of the vttermost seuerity of His Maiestie's Iustice to be extended in that behalfe And his Maiesty doth also vpon like paine straightly charge command That no Bishop Priest or other person hauing taken or which shall take order by or vnder any authority or power deriued from the Sea of Rome which he or they be naturall borne Subjects Denizens or Strangers doe presume to conferre any Ecclesiasticall orders or exercise any Ecclesiasticall function or jurisdiction whatsoeuer towards or vpon any of his M ●ies natural borne Subiects within this Realme or any other his Majesties Dominiōs His Maiesty doth also giue expresse charge cōmandemēt vnto all singular Iudges Iustices others to whō the same appertaineth That all the Lawes and Statutes now standing in force be put in due execution against all Iesuits Seminary Priests others hauing taken orders by any authority from the Sea of Rome being His Maiesties Subiects which from after the last day of September next comming shal be found within His Maiestie's Dominions which day His Maiesty doth by this Proclamation limit prefixe for the vttermost time of their departure auoidance out of this Realme and all other His Maiesties Dominions at their perils not to returne againe vpon the seuere penalties of the Lawes now in force against them His Maiesty hereby commanding all singular Maiors Sheriffes Iustices of the peace Officers of Ports whither they shall repaire for their Shipping out quietly to suffer thē in the mean time to depart But if any of thē or any others of that kind shal after that day be found within His Maiesties Dominiōs that then the course of Iustice and the Lawes be taken pursued against them with severity Giuing warning hereby to all his Maiesties louing Subiects that after the last day of September next ensuing they doe not receiue harbour entertaine relieue or conceale any of the said Iesuits Seminary Priests or other Popish Priests vpon the penalties which by the Law they shall incurre for so doing And His Maiesties pleasure is that after the last day of September next ensuing diligent search be from time to time made for the apprehension bringing to Iustice of all Offenders in any the premisses Given at the Court at Woodstocke the fourteenth day of August in the first yeare of his Maiesties Raigne of great Brittaine France and Ireland God saue the King Printed at Oxford by I.
