abovementioned_a with_o much_o care_n and_o trouble_v and_o a_o great_a expense_n of_o treasure_n after_o have_v struggle_v with_o many_o unexpected_a obstruction_n and_o difficulty_n settle_v a_o continue_a chain_n of_o unexpected_a obstruction_n and_o most_o unaccountable_a malipiero_n treatment_n that_o we_o meet_v with_o by_o proclamation_n of_o a_o very_a strange_a nature_n and_o otherwise_o that_o the_o repeat_v misfortune_n follow_v thereupon_o put_v we_o under_o a_o indispensible_a necessity_n of_o humble_o petition_v his_o majesty_n for_o allow_v the_o parliament_n to_o meet_v at_o the_o day_n appoint_v in_o november_n last_o in_o full_a confidence_n and_o expectation_n of_o have_v the_o most_o natural_a and_o cordial_a assistance_n from_o those_o who_o first_o establish_v our_o company_n and_o promise_v it_o protection_n especial_o since_o all_o our_o other_o application_n have_v hitherto_o prove_v ineffectual_a but_o a_o meeting_n of_o the_o estate_n in_o parliament_n at_o that_o time_n not_o quadrate_v it_o will_v seem_v with_o his_o majesty_n other_o affair_n a_o very_a considerable_a body_n of_o the_o nobility_n gentry_n and_o burgess_n of_o this_o kingdom_n think_v fit_a in_o a_o most_o dutiful_a and_o humble_a manner_n by_o their_o late_a address_n to_o represent_v to_o his_o majesty_n how_o deep_o they_o be_v affect_v with_o the_o nation_n concern_v in_o our_o company_n be_v repeat_v misfortune_n and_o therefore_o humble_o petition_v for_o the_o sit_v of_o this_o parliament_n as_o soon_o as_o convenient_o may_v be_v and_o the_o king_n have_v be_v most_o gracious_o please_v to_o order_v the_o meeting_n of_o the_o right_n honourable_a estate_n now_o in_o parliament_n we_o think_v ourselves_o in_o all_o duty_n bind_v to_o give_v his_o grace_n his_o majesty_n high_a commissioner_n and_o the_o right_n honourable_a the_o estate_n a_o short_a and_o naked_a narrative_n of_o the_o several_a obstruction_n and_o misfortune_n that_o we_o have_v be_v all_o along_o force_v to_o grapple_v with_o in_o the_o prosecution_n of_o our_o company_n be_v design_n to_o the_o end_n that_o the_o great_a council_n of_o the_o nation_n have_v a_o perfect_a view_n and_o full_a knowledge_n of_o these_o difficulty_n which_o we_o now_o labour_v under_o may_v be_v the_o better_a able_a to_o to_o judge_v how_o to_o apply_v a_o remedy_n the_o first_o attempt_n for_o strengthen_v our_o company_n be_v interest_n and_o stock_n be_v at_o london_n where_o a_o subscription_n of_o 300000_o sterl_n be_v procure_v in_o nine_o day_n time_n without_o so_o much_o as_o a_o public_a advertisement_n and_o many_o know_a merchant_n be_v so_o far_o convince_v of_o the_o many_o advantage_n that_o may_v probable_o arise_v from_o such_o a_o constitution_n that_o they_o signify_v their_o willingness_n to_o be_v concern_v for_o triple_a the_o sum_n if_o allow_v but_o not_o only_o do_v the_o parliament_n of_o england_n by_o their_o address_n to_o his_o majesty_n of_o the_o 13_o of_o december_n 1695._o and_o otherways_o render_v that_o subscription_n ineffectual_a but_o the_o house_n of_o commons_o do_v also_o appoint_v a_o committee_n to_o examine_v what_o method_n be_v take_v for_o obtain_v the_o act_n of_o parliament_n by_o which_o our_o say_a company_n be_v establish_v who_o be_v the_o promoter_n and_o adviser_n thereof_o and_o do_v afterward_o impeach_v the_o nominees_n in_o the_o say_a act_n of_o parliament_n notwithstanding_o the_o absolute_a independency_n of_o this_o kingdom_n yet_o after_o all_o this_o discouragement_n we_o go_v on_o with_o our_o subscription_n at_o home_n and_o make_v our_o next_o effort_n for_o strengthen_v thereof_o beyond_o sea_n both_o in_o holland_n and_o hamburgh_n in_o the_o first_o of_o which_o place_n many_o eminent_a merchant_n declare_v their_o positive_a inclination_n to_o be_v very_o considerable_o interest_v with_o we_o and_o give_v some_o signal_n proof_n thereof_o till_o they_o be_v make_v to_o understand_v by_o threaten_n and_o other_o insinuation_n that_o a_o high_a power_n will_v make_v they_o at_o least_o very_a uneasy_a if_o they_o persist_v any_o further_a in_o their_o resolution_n of_o be_v concern_v with_o our_o company_n and_o at_o hamburgh_n where_o we_o have_v the_o most_o promise_a hope_n of_o foreign_a assistance_n the_o commercii_fw-la or_o merchant-company_n enter_v into_o contract_n with_o our_o company_n be_v deputees_n to_o join_v at_o least_o 200000_o l._n sterl_n to_o our_o company_n be_v stock_n but_o to_o our_o great_a astonishment_n his_o majesty_n of_o great_a britain_n minister_n there_o do_v under_o pretence_n of_o special_a warrant_n from_o the_o king_n put_v a_o full_a stop_n thereto_o by_o give_v in_o a_o memorial_n to_o the_o burgo-master_n &_o gentlemen-councellour_n of_o that_o city_n whole_o dis-owning_a the_o authority_n of_o the_o act_n of_o parliament_n and_o letter_n patent_n above_o mention_v and_o intimate_v that_o his_o majesty_n will_v regard_v their_o enter_v into_o treaty_n with_o our_o company_n as_o a_o affront_n to_o his_o royal_a authority_n and_o that_o he_o will_v not_o fail_v to_o resent_v it_o as_o have_v neither_o credential_n letter_n nor_o be_v any_o otherways_o authorize_v by_o his_o majesty_n upon_o notice_n whereof_o we_o do_v in_o all_o humble_a duty_n address_v his_o majesty_n in_o june_n 1697_o for_o
in_o the_o term_n of_o the_o act_n of_o parliament_n as_o we_o shall_v be_v answerable_a yet_o upon_o the_o very_a first_o advice_n we_o have_v of_o our_o colony_n settlement_n in_o caledonia_n we_o by_o our_o letter_n of_o the_o 31st_o of_o march_n and_o one_a of_o april_n 1699_o give_v a_o very_a full_a and_o dutiful_a account_n thereof_o to_o his_o majesty_n and_o to_o both_o the_o secretary_n of_o state_n together_o with_o a_o account_n of_o the_o french_a design_n thereabouts_o and_o of_o what_o import_n our_o say_a settlement_n if_o due_o protect_v may_v prove_v to_o the_o interest_n and_o security_n of_o all_o his_o majesty_n dominion_n and_o refer_v the_o same_o together_o with_o the_o content_n of_o our_o former_a petition_n to_o his_o majesty_n royal_a consideration_n about_o this_o time_n it_o be_v that_o his_o majesty_n be_v please_v to_o call_v the_o precedent_n of_o the_o session_n and_o the_o advocate_n to_o court_n to_o the_o end_n as_o we_o understand_v that_o they_o joint_o with_o both_o the_o secretary_n of_o state_n might_n in_o a_o conference_n with_o several_a of_o the_o english_a minister_n satisfy_v his_o majesty_n as_o to_o the_o legality_n of_o our_o company_n be_v settlement_n which_o by_o all_o that_o ever_o we_o can_v learn_v be_v then_o and_o otherways_o since_o that_o time_n make_v clear_a beyond_o all_o manner_n of_o dispute_n but_o while_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n we_o be_v pawn_v even_o our_o own_o particular_a credit_n for_o send_v the_o needful_a supply_n of_o ship_n man_n provision_n arm_n ammunition_n and_o other_o necessary_n for_o secure_v so_o valuable_a a_o settlement_n to_o this_o nation_n we_o be_v astonish_v to_o have_v advice_n that_o by_o order_n from_o england_n in_o january_n 1699_o proclamation_n have_v be_v emit_v in_o the_o month_n of_o april_n and_o may_n over_o all_o his_o majesty_n plantation_n and_o territory_n in_o america_n strict_o intercommune_v our_o colony_n under_o very_o severe_a penalty_n to_o be_v inflict_v on_o the_o contraveener_n of_o these_o proclamation_n in_o regard_n that_o his_o majesty_n as_o these_o proclamation_n narrate_v be_v unacquainted_a with_o the_o intention_n and_o design_n of_o the_o scot_n settle_v at_o darien_n as_o we_o humble_o consider_v these_o proclamation_n to_o be_v such_o as_o be_v never_o before_o publish_v in_o those_o part_n against_o any_o other_o people_n upon_o earth_n and_o of_o so_o barbarous_a a_o nature_n as_o we_o think_v no_o good_a christian_n will_v put_v in_o execution_n even_o against_o infidel_n so_o find_v ourselves_o unquestionable_o warrant_v by_o all_o law_n humane_a and_o divine_a we_o persist_v in_o our_o endeavour_n for_o maintain_v that_o settlement_n as_o hope_v that_o through_o mean_n thereof_o this_o nation_n may_v in_o time_n have_v a_o opportunity_n of_o raise_v itself_o above_o the_o open_a contempt_n reproach_n and_o insult_v of_o its_o unkind_a neighbour_n and_o of_o propagate_a the_o gospel_n among_o the_o ignorant_a good_a nature_a indian_n of_o those_o part_n but_o before_o our_o recruit_n can_v possible_o arrive_v at_o caledonia_n our_o colony_n get_v certain_a account_n of_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o which_o confusion_n those_o of_o they_o who_o have_v any_o bad_a design_n as_o we_o can_v not_o well_o suppose_v such_o a_o number_n to_o be_v free_a of_o some_o make_v use_v of_o these_o proclamation_n as_o handle_n by_o which_o to_o perpetrate_v their_o own_o several_a end_n and_o easy_o persuade_v all_o the_o rest_n to_o leave_v the_o settlement_n which_o they_o unadvised_o do_v the_o 20_o of_o june_n last_o and_o by_o that_o mean_v not_o only_o have_v the_o ship_n man_n &_o good_n which_o be_v there_o at_o that_o time_n be_v expose_v to_o the_o arbitrary_a company_n do_v by_o their_o letter_n of_o the_o 28_o of_o september_n 1697_o expostulate_v in_o the_o first_o place_n with_o both_o the_o then_o secretary_n of_o state_n about_o that_o further_a dis-appointment_n but_o have_v still_o no_o redress_n the_o rein_n we_o do_v in_o most_o humble_a and_o dutiful_a manner_n by_o our_o second_o address_n of_o the_o 22d_o day_n of_o december_n 1697._o lay_v the_o whole_a matter_n again_o before_o his_o majesty_n and_o do_v likewise_o at_o the_o same_o time_n not_o only_o humble_o represent_v the_o premise_n to_o his_o majesty_n most_o honourable_a separat_o to_o both_o the_o secretary_n of_o state_n and_o such_o other_o noble_a person_n of_o the_o government_n as_o happen_v to_o be_v then_o at_o london_n to_o use_v their_o joint-interest_n for_o procure_v justice_n in_o a_o matter_n of_o such_o universal_a concern_v to_o the_o honour_n interest_n and_o independency_n of_o the_o whole_a kingdom_n all_o the_o answer_v we_o obtain_v be_v by_o a_o letter_n of_o the_o 17_o of_o january_n 1698_o from_o both_o the_o secretary_n of_o state_n that_o the_o king_n say_v he_o have_v already_o give_v order_n to_o his_o resident_n at_o hamburgh_n in_o that_o matter_n conform_v to_o his_o royal_a letter_n from_o flanders_n in_o july_n 1697_o which_o be_v then_o communicate_v to_o the_o company_n by_o which_o answer_n together_o with_o what_o repeat_v advice_n we_o have_v at_o the_o same_o time_n from_o hamburgh_n that_o the_o english_a minister_n there_o have_v still_o positive_o disow_v their_o have_v get_v any_o such_o order_n we_o be_v put_v out_o of_o all_o hope_n of_o have_v any_o redress_n until_o we_o shall_v have_v a_o opportunity_n of_o lay_v the_o whole_a matter_n before_o a_o meeting_n of_o the_o estate_n of_o parliament_n but_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n we_o proceed_v with_o all_o the_o strength_n we_o have_v though_o extreme_o weaken_v by_o the_o treatment_n above-narrated_n to_o make_v the_o best_a preparation_n we_o can_v consider_v the_o scarcity_n of_o these_o year_n for_o fit_v out_o a_o equipage_n of_o ship_n man_n provision_n and_o other_o necessary_n for_o settle_v a_o plantation_n in_o america_n in_o the_o term_n of_o the_o act_n of_o parliament_n and_o letter_n patent_n abovementioned_a and_o its_o evident_a by_o the_o very_a constitution_n of_o the_o colony_n that_o they_o be_v calculate_v more_o for_o the_o general_a advantage_n of_o the_o nation_n and_o posterity_n than_o for_o the_o particular_a and_o immediate_a benefit_n of_o the_o adventurer_n and_o the_o parliament_n parliament_n have_v thereupon_o by_o their_o unanimous_a address_n of_o the_o 5_o of_o august_n 1698_o to_o his_o majesty_n think_v fit_a to_o manifest_v their_o own_o and_o the_o whole_a nation_n vindicat_fw-la the_o undoubted_a right_n and_o privilege_n of_o the_o say_a company_n and_o support_v the_o credit_n and_o interest_n thereof_o and_o the_o parliament_n likewise_o by_o the_o same_o address_n recommend_v the_o concern_v of_o the_o say_a company_n to_o some_o special_a mark_n of_o his_o majesty_n royal_a favour_n as_o that_o branch_n of_o the_o trade_n of_o this_o kingdom_n in_o which_o they_o and_o the_o nation_n they_o represent_v have_v a_o more_o peculiar_a interest_n the_o court_n of_o director_n of_o our_o company_n be_v thereby_o encourage_v to_o renew_v their_o application_n to_o his_o majesty_n with_o relation_n to_o the_o memorial_n give_v in_o by_o his_o minister_n to_o the_o senate_n of_o hamburgh_n the_o same_o be_v special_o mention_v in_o the_o several_a letter_n from_o hamburgh_n that_o both_o the_o english_a minister_n there_o have_v positive_o deny_v their_o have_v receive_v any_o such_o order_n as_o be_v long_o before_o promise_v and_o until_o he_o shall_v receive_v certain_a information_n of_o their_o settlement_n though_o we_o can_v not_o but_o be_v surprise_v to_o find_v all_o our_o former_a address_n and_o petition_n about_o matter_n of_o such_o weighty_a concern_v as_o be_v above-narrated_n answer_v after_o so_o long_a delay_n only_o with_o a_o seem_a charge_n for_o not_o have_v communicate_v to_o his_o majesty_n a_o thing_n that_o be_v never_o in_o the_o least_o demand_v of_o we_o by_o either_o the_o king_n parliament_z privy_a council_n or_o minister_n of_o state_n we_o be_v limit_v to_o settle_v
