sudden_a like_o those_o act._n 2._o 37._o who_o be_v first_o prick_v in_o their_o heart_n and_o humble_v at_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n and_o then_o afterward_o fill_v with_o joy_n as_o appear_v verse_n 41._o contrariwise_o the_o temporary_a and_o hypocritical_a hearer_n be_v sudden_a and_o overhasty_a in_o his_o affection_n to_o the_o word_n they_o spring_v in_o he_o sudden_o like_o ionas_n his_o gourd_n so_o it_o be_v say_v here_o they_o receive_v the_o word_n immediate_o with_o gladness_n even_o upon_o the_o first_o hear_n without_o any_o due_a consideration_n of_o the_o ground_n and_o reason_n of_o their_o joy_n without_o any_o

touch_n of_o conscience_n or_o true_a humiliation_n for_o sin_n go_v before_o 2._o the_o affection_n of_o the_o good_a hearer_n be_v constant_a though_o not_o always_o in_o like_a measure_n their_o love_n and_o desire_v to_o the_o word_n and_o their_o joy_n in_o it_o continue_v and_o increase_v more_o and_o more_o contrariwise_o the_o love_n and_o joy_n of_o the_o temporary_a as_o it_o come_v sudden_o so_o it_o go_v and_o vanish_v as_o sudden_o according_a to_o the_o proverb_n soon_o ripe_a soon_o rot_v his_o affection_n to_o the_o word_n come_v by_o fit_n as_o it_o be_v now_o and_o then_o and_o afterward_o decay_v and_o vanish_v thus_o we_o see_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o sincere_a affection_n to_o the_o word_n which_o be_v in_o good_a hearer_n and_o those_o hypocritical_a and_o counterfeit_a affection_n which_o be_v find_v in_o the_o temporary_a hearer_n now_o than_o we_o be_v to_o examine_v our_o affection_n to_o the_o word_n whether_o they_o be_v sound_a and_o sincere_a and_o to_o labour_v that_o they_o may_v be_v so_o labour_n to_o love_n and_o rejoice_v in_o the_o word_n even_o for_o the_o holiness_n of_o it_o and_o not_o for_o sinister_a respect_n and_o to_o be_v constant_a in_o our_o love_n and_o joy_n use_v 4_o use_v 4._o if_o man_n may_v go_v so_o far_o in_o the_o property_n of_o the_o good_a hearer_n and_o yet_o be_v still_o unprofitable_a hearer_n and_o no_o better_a than_o hypocrite_n this_o must_v teach_v we_o not_o to_o be_v discourage_v in_o our_o love_n to_o the_o word_n nor_o to_o give_v over_o our_o joy_n in_o it_o though_o we_o see_v some_o fall_n away_o who_o have_v former_o be_v forward_o in_o hear_v it_o and_o show_v much_o love_n to_o it_o and_o seem_v to_o rejoice_v in_o it_o though_o we_o be_v to_o grieve_v at_o this_o yet_o not_o so_o to_o be_v offend_v or_o dismay_v at_o it_o as_o to_o be_v thereby_o hinder_v in_o our_o good_a and_o christian_a course_n no_o marvel_n if_o such_o fall_n away_o from_o their_o faith_n see_v they_o be_v never_o sound_a in_o faith_n no_o marvel_n if_o they_o leave_v their_o first_o love_n to_o the_o word_n and_o their_o joy_n which_o they_o have_v in_o it_o see_v these_o affection_n be_v never_o sound_a in_o they_o we_o wonder_v not_o to_o see_v a_o dog_n return_v to_o his_o vomit_n or_o the_o swine_n be_v wash_v to_o wallow_v in_o the_o mire_n again_o no_o more_o shall_v we_o wonder_v to_o see_v hypocrite_n and_o counterfeit_a professor_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o fall_v from_o their_o first_o profession_n 1_o joh._n 2._o 19_o they_o go_v out_o from_o we_o but_o they_o be_v not_o of_o we_o for_o if_o they_o have_v be_v of_o we_o they_o have_v remain_v with_o we_o so_o much_o of_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v commendable_a in_o these_o hearer_n mark_v 4._o 17._o and_o have_v no_o root_n in_o themselves_o etc._n etc._n 1620._o may_v 7._o 1620._o now_o follow_v those_o thing_n wherein_o they_o fail_v 1._o they_o have_v no_o root_n in_o themselves_o that_o be_v the_o word_n which_o they_o hear_v be_v not_o root_v in_o their_o heart_n now_o by_o this_o root_n of_o it_o in_o they_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v the_o effectual_a apply_v of_o it_o unto_o they_o which_o application_n be_v make_v by_o a_o true_a and_o save_a faith_n in_o their_o heart_n this_o be_v call_v by_o st._n james_n the_o engraff_n of_o the_o word_n jam._n 1._o 21._o see_v col._n 2._o 7._o observe_v observe_v though_o hearer_n be_v affect_v in_o heart_n with_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o word_n yet_o if_o it_o be_v not_o root_v in_o they_o that_o be_v true_o and_o effectual_o apply_v by_o faith_n it_o can_v true_o profit_v they_o this_o be_v mention_v as_o the_o main_a cause_n why_o these_o hearer_n signify_v by_o the_o stony_a ground_n do_v not_o bring_v forth_o true_a and_o last_a fruit_n because_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o word_n be_v not_o root_v in_o they_o by_o faith_n it_o may_v have_v a_o shallow_a root_n as_o it_o be_v in_o they_o in_o that_o their_o heart_n be_v in_o some_o sort_n affect_v with_o joy_n in_o it_o but_o have_v no_o true_a root_n in_o they_o it_o be_v not_o root_v deep_o enough_o in_o they_o by_o true_a faith_n as_o seed_v in_o stony-ground_n may_v enter_v a_o little_a but_o not_o deep_a enough_o etc._n etc._n heb._n 4._o 2._o the_o word_n which_o the_o old_a israelite_n hear_v do_v not_o profit_v they_o because_o not_o mingle_v with_o faith_n in_o those_o that_o hear_v it_o reas_n 1_o reason_n 1._o till_o the_o word_n be_v root_v and_o apply_v by_o faith_n the_o heart_n can_v be_v true_o and_o sincere_o affect_v with_o it_o for_o all_o sound_n and_o sincere_a affection_n of_o the_o heart_n unto_o the_o word_n as_o true_a love_n to_o it_o and_o sound_a joy_n in_o it_o etc._n etc._n do_v flow_v from_o true_a faith_n as_o effect_n of_o it_o they_o may_v be_v affect_v but_o not_o so_o as_o to_o have_v their_o heart_n renew_v reas_n 2_o reas_n 2._o without_o faith_n effectual_o apply_v the_o word_n there_o will_v be_v no_o sincere_a obedience_n yield_v unto_o it_o for_o this_o be_v also_o a_o fruit_n of_o faith_n therefore_o it_o be_v call_v the_o obedience_n of_o faith_n rom._n 16._o 26._o use_v 1_o use_v 1._o see_v the_o reason_n why_o many_o profit_n not_o by_o the_o word_n preach_v and_o hear_v because_o they_o want_v true_a faith_n whereby_o it_o shall_v be_v root_v in_o their_o heart_n their_o heart_n by_o some_o sudden_a and_o light_a joy_n in_o it_o for_o a_o time_n or_o by_o a_o false_a temporary_a faith_n only_o believe_v and_o slight_o apply_v it_o for_o a_o time_n but_o there_o be_v no_o depth_n of_o earth_n in_o they_o no_o sound_n save_v faith_n in_o they_o effectual_o to_o apply_v the_o word_n and_o to_o root_v it_o in_o their_o heart_n but_o without_o this_o all_o their_o affection_n of_o love_n and_o desire_v to_o the_o word_n and_o of_o joy_n in_o it_o for_o a_o time_n be_v vain_a and_o come_v to_o nothing_o at_o length_n and_o they_o be_v never_o the_o better_a for_o all_o their_o hear_n use_v 2_o use_v 2._o if_o we_o will_v true_o profit_v by_o the_o word_n and_o have_v it_o fruitful_a in_o we_o unto_o eternal_a life_n think_v it_o not_o enough_o to_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n affect_v with_o joy_n and_o delight_n in_o it_o when_o we_o hear_v it_o etc._n etc._n for_o all_o this_o while_o it_o have_v but_o a_o shallow_a entrance_n like_o seed_n in_o stony-ground_n but_o labour_n above_o all_o to_o have_v it_o thorough_o and_o deep_o root_v in_o we_o by_o true_a and_o effectual_a faithful_a apply_v it_o unto_o ourselves_o so_o as_o it_o may_v work_v thorough_o upon_o our_o heart_n cause_v we_o not_o only_o to_o be_v true_o and_o sincere_o affect_v to_o it_o but_o also_o to_o yield_v unfeigned_a obedience_n unto_o it_o for_o this_o will_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o word_n work_n upon_o we_o if_o it_o be_v once_o root_v in_o we_o true_o by_o faith_n if_o it_o be_v thus_o root_v in_o we_o it_o will_v not_o only_o spring_v up_o in_o we_o and_o be_v fruitful_a for_o a_o time_n but_o even_o forever_o and_o this_o fruit_n shall_v never_o die_v in_o we_o but_o as_o the_o seed_n be_v immortal_a so_o shall_v the_o fruit_n be_v oh_o therefore_o labour_n for_o this_o true_a and_o effectual_a faith_n whereby_o to_o apply_v every_o doctrine_n and_o instruction_n every_o reproof_n and_o threaten_a every_o comfort_n and_o promise_v unto_o thyself_o particular_o and_o effectual_o so_o as_o every_o part_n of_o the_o word_n may_v take_v deep_a root_n in_o thou_o and_o may_v work_v thorough_o and_o effectual_o upon_o reverence_n to_o john_n person_n and_o doctrine_n be_v willing_a and_o desirous_a to_o hear_v he_o and_o ready_a to_o obey_v he_o in_o many_o thing_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o he_o show_v he_o special_a kindness_n and_o mercy_n in_o keep_v he_o alive_a and_o safe_a when_o herodias_n will_v have_v kill_v he_o and_o yet_o all_o this_o while_n herod_n remain_v but_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o wicked_a man_n which_o show_v that_o one_o may_v go_v very_o far_o in_o a_o show_n of_o true_a religion_n and_o grace_n and_o yet_o be_v void_a of_o it_o see_v also_o for_o proof_n of_o this_o hebr._n 6._o 4._o and_o luke_n 8._o 13._o see_v also_o what_o have_v be_v say_v before_o of_o this_o point_n upon_o mark_n 4._o 16._o but_o more_o particular_o to_o open_v this_o point_n here_o there_o be_v understanding_n a_o wicked_a man_n may_v be_v enlighten_v with_o a_o good_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o doctrine_n of_o it_o so_o as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o speak_v and_o discourse_v ready_o of_o it_o to_o other_o yea_o to_o preach_v it_o to_o other_o as_o judas_n do_v hebr._n 6._o 4._o such_o as_o commit_v the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v enlighten_v with_o knowledge_n so_o hebr._n 10._o 26._o and_o 2_o pet._n 2._o 21._o some_o know_v the_o way_n of_o righteousness_n and_o yet_o fall_v away_o etc._n etc._n touch_v the_o second_o word_n of_o god_n and_o a_o kind_n of_o joy_n and_o delight_n in_o it_o for_o a_o time_n see_v for_o this_o hebr._n 6._o and_o luke_n 8._o 13._o and_o here_o in_o the_o example_n of_o herod_n so_o also_o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v be_v affect_v with_o a_o kind_n of_o love_n and_o reverence_n to_o god_n minister_n and_o to_o other_o good_a man_n as_o we_o see_v also_o in_o herod_n here_o he_o may_v also_o have_v some_o other_o good_a affection_n as_o a_o kind_n of_o love_n and_o desire_v after_o heaven_n and_o salvation_n such_o as_o be_v in_o wicked_a balaam_n wish_v to_o die_v the_o death_n of_o the_o righteous_a etc._n etc._n and_o hebr._n 6._o 5._o they_o be_v say_v to_o taste_v of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o world_n to_o come_v again_o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v be_v affect_v

every_o true_a child_n of_o god_n 1._o pray_v unto_o god_n to_o work_v and_o increase_v in_o we_o this_o holy_a affection_n 2._o labour_n for_o a_o true_a feel_n and_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n to_o we_o in_o jesus_n christ_n that_o this_o may_v cause_v we_o true_o to_o love_v he_o again_o and_o to_o be_v zealous_a for_o his_o glory_n be_v offend_v when_o he_o be_v dishonour_v by_o the_o as_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o do_v these_o rule_n or_o caution_n be_v to_o be_v remember_v by_o we_o 1._o that_o our_o anger_n conceive_v against_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o must_v be_v upon_o good_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o continuance_n of_o it_o ephes_n 4._o 26._o be_v angry_a and_o sin_v not_o let_v not_o the_o sun_n go_v down_o etc._n etc._n neither_o must_v our_o anger_n be_v such_o as_o respect_v person_n in_o our_o anger_n against_o sin_n but_o be_v unpartial_a in_o it_o be_v offend_v at_o sin_n wheresoever_o we_o find_v it_o and_o in_o whatsoever_o person_n though_o in_o our_o dear_a friend_n kindt_v acquaintance_n etc._n etc._n our_o saviour_n be_v offend_v at_o peter_n himself_o call_v he_o satan_n matth._n 16._o when_o he_o go_v about_o to_o persuade_v he_o that_o he_o shall_v not_o suffer_v death_n moses_n be_v very_o angry_a at_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n for_o their_o sin_n of_o idolatry_n as_o we_o hear_v and_o yet_o he_o love_v they_o so_o dear_o that_o he_o wish_v himself_o to_o be_v blot_v out_o of_o god_n book_n if_o it_o have_v be_v possible_a rather_o than_o their_o sin_n shall_v not_o be_v forgive_v exod._n 32._o job_n show_v himself_o offend_v at_o his_o own_o wife_n call_v her_o foolish_a woman_n job_n 2._o love_n to_o our_o friend_n must_v be_v no_o hindrance_n to_o our_o holy_a anger_n and_o displeasure_n against_o their_o sin_n but_o rather_o a_o help_n and_o furtherance_n for_o this_o affection_n ought_v to_o come_v from_o love_n to_o their_o person_n and_o to_o be_v join_v with_o it_o as_o we_o have_v hear_v and_o so_o the_o more_o we_o love_v they_o the_o more_o we_o shall_v be_v affect_v with_o indignation_n against_o they_o when_o they_o dishonour_v god_n use_v use_v to_o reprove_v such_o as_o can_v be_v angry_a and_o displease_v at_o sin_n in_o their_o enemy_n or_o in_o stranger_n but_o not_o in_o their_o friend_n kindred_n familiar_a acquaintance_n etc._n etc._n who_o they_o love_v and_o affect_v they_o can_v bear_v with_o gross_a sin_n in_o such_o and_o wink_v at_o they_o and_o be_v not_o move_v to_o displeasure_n they_o can_v like_v and_o approve_v of_o the_o fault_n of_o such_o and_o be_v well_o enough_o please_v with_o they_o yea_o they_o can_v commend_v and_o justify_v the_o fault_n of_o such_o as_o if_o they_o be_v virtue_n etc._n etc._n but_o this_o be_v carnal_a love_n which_o hinder_v they_o from_o be_v displease_v at_o the_o sin_n of_o those_o who_o they_o affect_v and_o it_o be_v also_o a_o plain_a argument_n that_o the_o anger_n they_o show_v against_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o who_o person_n they_o affect_v not_o be_v also_o a_o carnal_a and_o sinful_a anger_n and_o nothing_o less_o than_o that_o true_a holy_a zeal_n and_o indignation_n against_o sin_n which_o shall_v be_v in_o they_o for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o holy_a anger_n they_o will_v be_v move_v against_o the_o same_o sin_n in_o their_o friend_n as_o well_o as_o in_o their_o enemy_n observe_v 3_o observe_v 3._o in_o that_o our_o saviour_n be_v not_o only_o displease_v but_o much_o displease_v or_o offend_v at_o his_o disciple_n for_o this_o fault_n and_o sin_n of_o hinder_v the_o little_a child_n from_o be_v bring_v to_o he_o we_o may_v gather_v that_o it_o be_v a_o great_a sin_n any_o way_n to_o hinder_v the_o spiritual_a good_a and_o salvation_n of_o infant_n or_o little_a child_n yea_o though_o it_o be_v unwitting_o or_o of_o ignorance_n as_o it_o be_v probable_a this_o be_v do_v by_o the_o disciple_n much_o more_o then_o to_o do_v it_o willing_o or_o against_o knowledge_n christ_n be_v much_o offend_v still_o at_o such_o now_o the_o salvation_n of_o young_a child_n be_v hinder_v when_o the_o mean_n of_o their_o spiritual_a good_a and_o salvation_n be_v neglect_v as_o when_o they_o be_v keep_v or_o withhold_v from_o the_o sacrament_n of_o baptism_n which_o by_o the_o way_n show_v the_o sin_n of_o such_o parent_n as_o do_v neglect_n or_o defer_v it_o too_o long_o and_o especial_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o anabaptist_n utter_o deny_v that_o sacrament_n to_o infant_n etc._n etc._n also_o by_o parent_n neglect_v to_o pray_v for_o their_o child_n and_o to_o train_v they_o up_o religious_o so_o soon_o as_o they_o begin_v to_o have_v understanding_n and_o to_o be_v capable_a of_o instruction_n etc._n etc._n great_a be_v the_o sin_n of_o such_o parent_n who_o thus_o neglect_v the_o mean_n of_o the_o spiritual_a good_a and_o salvation_n of_o their_o child_n and_o so_o as_o much_o as_o lie_v in_o they_o do_v hinder_v their_o salvation_n they_o be_v spiritual_a murderer_n of_o the_o soul_n of_o their_o own_o child_n let_v all_o parent_n be_v admonish_v to_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o grievous_a sin_n that_o they_o be_v not_o guilty_a of_o it_o mark_v 10._o 14._o but_o when_o jesus_n see_v it_o he_o be_v much_o displease_v and_o say_v unto_o they_o suffer_v the_o little_a child_n 1628._o may_v 18._o 1628._o to_o come_v unto_o i_o and_o forbid_v they_o not_o for_o of_o such_o be_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n here_o it_o follow_v how_o our_o saviour_n show_v his_o displeasure_n by_o his_o word_n to_o his_o disciplas_n command_v they_o to_o suffer_v little_a child_n etc._n etc._n this_o commandment_n have_v also_o the_o force_n of_o a_o reproof_n whereby_o he_o blame_v they_o for_o not_o suffer_v but_o rather_o hinder_v the_o child_n from_o come_v to_o he_o where_o 1._o consider_v the_o precept_n or_o commandment_n itself_o which_o be_v give_v both_o affirmative_o suffer_v little_a child_n to_o come_v unto_o i_o and_o negative_o forbid_v they_o not_o 2._o the_o reason_n of_o the_o commandment_n why_o they_o shall_v suffer_v little_a child_n to_o come_v to_o he_o etc._n etc._n because_o of_o such_o be_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n 3._o a_o
