gent._n i_o can_v well_o agree_v that_o love_n shall_v have_v place_n in_o god_n both_o in_o his_o nature_n and_o in_o his_o action_n for_o as_o he_o be_v the_o chief_a and_o the_o very_a fountain_n of_o all_o goodness_n so_o it_o seem_v very_o meet_v that_o he_o shall_v extend_v his_o goodness_n to_o all_o his_o creature_n by_o do_v good_a unto_o they_o all_o according_a to_o their_o several_a kind_n but_o for_o this_o affection_n of_o hatred_n i_o do_v not_o see_v how_o it_o can_v so_o well_o agree_v to_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n it_o be_v by_o nature_n evil_a and_o contrary_a to_o the_o state_n of_o the_o question_n will_v be_v agree_v upon_o before_o disputation_n and_o it_o may_v easy_o be_v know_v if_o you_o call_v to_o mind_n that_o which_o have_v be_v say_v of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n for_o first_o the_o reasonable_a creature_n only_o be_v the_o subject_n as_o of_o the_o love_n so_o also_o of_o the_o hatred_n of_o god_n for_o of_o all_o the_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n the_o reasonable_a only_o can_v be_v and_o be_v evil_a the_o reason_n hereof_o be_v because_o all_o other_o thing_n as_o they_o be_v create_v good_a so_o they_o continue_v in_o that_o state_n of_o goodness_n and_o in_o respect_n of_o it_o be_v in_o some_o sort_n love_v of_o god_n although_o not_o in_o that_o degree_n of_o perfection_n and_o excellency_n god_n have_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n withdraw_v from_o they_o some_o part_n of_o it_o but_o man_n have_v clean_o forsake_v that_o state_n and_o stand_v wherein_o he_o be_v place_v by_o god_n and_o lose_v that_o goodness_n for_o the_o which_o he_o be_v so_o belove_v of_o god_n yea_o not_o only_o so_o but_o also_o he_o have_v make_v a_o exchange_n of_o the_o say_a goodness_n for_o the_o contrary_a naughtiness_n of_o knowledge_n &_o obedience_n for_o ignorance_n error_n rebellion_n and_o contempt_n yea_o of_o the_o whole_a image_n of_o god_n for_o the_o ugly_a shape_n of_o satan_n and_o so_o be_v just_o become_v odious_a to_o god_n to_o who_o before_o he_o be_v dear_o belove_v gent._n belike_o man_n be_v create_v in_o a_o worse_a estate_n than_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o creature_n for_o they_o be_v sure_a to_o continue_v in_o the_o state_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o in_o happiness_n from_o the_o which_o we_o see_v that_o man_n be_v most_o miserable_o fall_v and_o that_o into_o y_fw-fr e_fw-la hatred_n of_o god_n as_o you_o will_v have_v it_o i_o confess_v y_fw-es â—_o as_o now_o you_o e_o case_n stand_v with_o he_o man_n be_v in_o a_o far_o worse_a estate_n than_o any_o unreasonable_a be_v create_v in_o the_o fruition_n of_o all_o pleasure_n and_o happiness_n of_o the_o which_o their_o nature_n be_v not_o capable_a and_o what_o though_o he_o be_v create_v in_o the_o possibility_n of_o be_v miserable_a from_o the_o which_o the_o other_o creature_n be_v exempt_v who_o will_v refuse_v the_o offer_n of_o riches_n honour_n favour_n and_o love_n make_v by_o his_o prince_n upon_o this_o condition_n that_o if_o he_o be_v find_v to_o be_v traitorous_a rebellious_a and_o disloyal_a he_o shall_v not_o only_o be_v deprive_v of_o all_o the_o aforesaid_a benefit_n but_o also_o be_v most_o shameful_o and_o miserable_o torture_v and_o torment_v to_o death_n gent._n that_o be_v it_o i_o look_v for_o you_o have_v madâ—_n a_o very_a good_a reason_n against_o yourself_o for_o man_n by_o put_v on_o the_o nature_n and_o shape_n of_o man_n not_o that_o we_o imagine_v as_o some_o have_v do_v that_o god_n be_v the_o soul_n or_o life_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o world_n god_n be_v yea_o thus_o they_o preach_v to_o the_o whole_a world_n as_o touch_v god_n their_o maker_n &_o author_n that_o he_o be_v a_o live_n and_o work_v yea_o a_o mighty_a and_o wise_a nature_n excellent_a yea_o infinite_a in_o all_o goodness_n to_o wit_n in_o knowledge_n and_o wisdom_n in_o truth_n and_o justice_n in_o love_n and_o mercy_n in_o power_n and_o strength_n in_o glory_n and_o majesty_n thus_o have_v conceive_v in_o our_o mind_n a_o idea_n or_o imagination_n of_o god_n nature_n we_o be_v in_o the_o next_o place_n to_o bring_v it_o forth_o into_o the_o world_n by_o get_v a_o example_n or_o resemblance_n of_o it_o in_o some_o thing_n not_o unlike_a unto_o it_o but_o against_o this_o pattern_n or_o resemblance_n it_o will_v be_v object_v the_o which_o you_o touch_v before_o that_o both_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o find_v any_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v like_a to_o god_n or_o fit_a to_o be_v a_o resemblance_n and_o also_o that_o if_o there_o can_v any_o such_o thing_n be_v find_v yet_o it_o be_v idolatry_n to_o resemble_v god_n to_o any_o creature_n whereunto_o we_o answer_v first_o to_o the_o former_a part_n of_o the_o objection_n that_o although_o the_o unlikeness_n to_o god_n be_v far_o great_a in_o the_o creature_n than_o the_o likeness_n yet_o that_o there_o be_v no_o creature_n which_o be_v not_o more_o or_o less_o in_o one_o respect_n or_o other_o like_a unto_o he_o for_o whatsoever_o be_v good_a commendable_a or_o excellent_a in_o any_o creature_n as_o all_o the_o creature_n be_v good_a yea_o every_o one_o of_o they_o endue_v with_o a_o proper_a and_o peculiar_a goodness_n that_o come_v from_o god_n who_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o all_o goodness_n and_o make_v the_o creature_n to_o be_v like_a to_o god_n so_o then_o if_o the_o mean_a and_o base_a creature_n have_v some_o likeness_n to_o god_n without_o doubt_n the_o excellent_a creature_n can_v but_o have_v a_o great_a likeness_n and_o resemblance_n unto_o he_o the_o which_o we_o know_v that_o god_n himself_o in_o the_o scripture_n do_v grant_v unto_o they_o calling_z man_z his_o own_o similitude_n god_n make_v man_n in_o the_o likeness_n of_o god._n genes_n 5._o 1._o yea_o although_o there_o be_v no_o manner_n of_o likeness_n or_o resemblance_n betwixt_o god_n and_o the_o creature_n but_o rather_o all_o contrariety_n and_o flat_a repugnancy_n yet_o they_o may_v profitable_o be_v use_v for_o the_o illustration_n of_o his_o nature_n as_o we_o know_v that_o all_o contrary_n do_v argue_v and_o illustrate_v each_o other_o the_o which_o way_n of_o teach_v although_o it_o be_v not_o the_o ready_a to_o attain_v the_o truth_n for_o that_o doctrine_n and_o knowledge_n be_v positive_a not_o privative_a consist_v not_o in_o the_o negation_n of_o that_o which_o be_v not_o or_o be_v not_o true_a but_o in_o the_o affirmation_n of_o that_o which_o do_v true_o and_o real_o exist_v yet_o it_o be_v always_o a_o help_n and_o sometime_o the_o only_a mean_n to_o the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o objection_n we_o answer_v confess_v that_o it_o be_v flat_a idolatry_n and_o utter_o unlawful_a to_o make_v or_o suppose_v god_n to_o be_v simple_o like_a or_o equal_a to_o any_o creature_n for_o that_o be_v to_o pull_v he_o down_o from_o his_o throne_n of_o majesty_n and_o to_o place_v he_o among_o the_o creature_n yet_o affirm_v it_o to_o be_v very_o as_o his_o love_n be_v in_o the_o general_a notion_n incline_v to_o good_a &_o not_o to_o evil_a so_o he_o love_v nothing_o but_o that_o which_o be_v good_a yea_o and_o he_o love_v it_o because_o it_o be_v good_a and_o for_o the_o goodness_n sake_n if_o you_o say_v what_o be_v our_o goodness_n to_o god_n that_o he_o shall_v love_v we_o for_o it_o what_o do_v it_o profit_n or_o pleasure_v he_o indeed_o he_o stand_v in_o no_o need_n of_o it_o yet_o he_o take_v pleasure_n in_o it_o the_o lord_n delight_v in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o his_o saint_n their_o sin_n be_v as_o eyesore_n &_o unpleasant_a sight_n unto_o he_o for_o why_o god_n delight_v in_o himself_o and_o every_o thing_n in_o that_o which_o be_v like_o itself_o he_o take_v pleasure_n to_o behold_v his_o own_o image_n in_o we_o even_o as_o the_o great_a joy_n &_o pleasure_n that_o a_o man_n can_v have_v in_o any_o worldly_a thing_n be_v to_o behold_v his_o own_o favour_n and_o fashion_n his_o own_o countenance_n and_o condition_n in_o his_o son_n and_o therefore_o the_o more_o that_o a_o man_n in_o holiness_n resemble_v god_n the_o more_o he_o be_v belove_v of_o he_o as_o be_v so_o much_o like_a to_o he_o as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o david_n that_o he_o be_v a_o man_n according_a to_o the_o heart_n of_o god_n gent._n this_o doctrine_n sound_v very_o harsh_a to_o i_o and_o so_o i_o think_v it_o will_v do_v to_o other_o if_o they_o shall_v hear_v it_o as_o that_o which_o give_v a_o great_a blow_n to_o god_n free_a election_n i_o be_o sure_a you_o have_v read_v that_o christ_n love_v we_o be_v his_o enemy_n rom._n 5._o and_o that_o you_o do_v not_o doubt_v but_o that_o god_n love_v the_o apostle_n paul_n even_o in_o his_o infidelity_n and_o when_o he_o in_o great_a fury_n do_v persecute_v the_o church_n sch._n it_o may_v be_v that_o it_o will_v seem_v strange_a to_o they_o that_o have_v not_o consider_v of_o it_o but_o the_o doctrine_n be_v as_o i_o think_v good_a and_o sound_a that_o god_n neither_o hate_v any_o but_o for_o sin_n neither_o love_v any_o but_o as_o they_o be_v holy_a yet_o our_o foresee_a holiness_n be_v not_o the_o cause_n why_o god_n do_v elect_v we_o to_o salvation_n for_o first_o he_o elect_v we_o to_o love_v &_o to_o life_n &_o then_o afterward_o by_o sanctify_v we_o he_o make_v we_o capable_a of_o his_o love_n and_o of_o eternal_a life_n the_o proper_a object_n of_o god_n love_n be_v the_o holiness_n of_o the_o reasonable_a creature_n unto_o the_o which_o as_o be_v agreeable_a to_o his_o own_o nature_n god_n do_v incline_v himself_o by_o do_v good_a unto_o it_o as_o he_o receive_v a_o kind_n of_o contentation_n in_o it_o and_o from_o it_o as_o for_o the_o estate_n of_o the_o elect_a before_o they_o be_v call_v and_o sanctify_v we_o know_v that_o who_o god_n love_v once_o he_o love_v always_o and_o paul_n even_o in_o the_o heat_n of_o his_o fury_n against_o christ_n be_v belove_v of_o god_n as_o one_o who_o he_o have_v choose_v and_o predestinate_a to_o bear_v at_o the_o appoint_a time_n his_o own_o image_n of_o holiness_n and_o so_o the_o foresight_n of_o holiness_n in_o he_o may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o the_o cause_n of_o god_n love_n though_o not_o of_o his_o election_n for_o god_n may_v choose_v to_o love_v who_o he_o listen_v but_o he_o can_v love_v but_o according_a to_o his_o own_o nature_n neither_o any_o thing_n but_o that_o which_o be_v in_o some_o sort_n agreeable_a to_o his_o nature_n for_o he_o can_v love_v or_o like_v but_o must_v of_o necessity_n hate_n and_o abhor_v evil_a as_o well_o in_o concreto_fw-la as_o in_o abstracto_fw-la in_o parricular_a subject_n as_o well_o as_o in_o general_a notion_n that_o so_o he_o may_v be_v always_o like_o himself_o sect._n 3_o gent._n i_o will_v not_o contend_v with_o you_o about_o it_o at_o this_o time_n because_o i_o will_v not_o hinder_v you_o from_o other_o matter_n now_o that_o you_o have_v lay_v the_o foundation_n of_o the_o description_n of_o god_n love_n i_o pray_v you_o go_v on_o with_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o build_n sch._n we_o will_v and_o first_o we_o may_v out_o of_o that_o that_o have_v be_v say_v to_o this_o purpose_n define_v the_o love_n of_o god_n to_o be_v the_o motion_n or_o rather_o the_o act_n of_o his_o will_n incline_v itself_o by_o do_v good_a to_o good_a prevail_a in_o the_o reasonable_a creature_n in_o this_o description_n we_o be_v to_o observe_v these_o three_o thing_n first_o that_o the_o love_n of_o god_n belong_v only_o to_o the_o reasonable_a creature_n second_o that_o the_o motive_n or_o inducement_n stir_v up_o in_o god_n this_o love_n be_v goodness_n prevail_a in_o the_o creature_n and_o last_o that_o the_o manner_n or_o rather_o a_o proper_a and_o necessary_a effect_n of_o this_o love_n or_o inclination_n of_o god_n to_o the_o creature_n be_v by_o do_v good_a unto_o it_o the_o first_o point_n be_v plain_a enough_o of_o itself_o need_v no_o further_a explanation_n for_o although_o all_o the_o creature_n in_o their_o several_a kind_n and_o degree_n have_v in_o they_o a_o special_a goodness_n in_o respect_n whereof_o god_n may_v be_v say_v to_o love_n and_o favour_v they_o as_o we_o read_v gen._n 1._o 31._o that_o god_n have_v finish_v all_o the_o creature_n look_v upon_o they_o and_o see_v they_o all_o to_o be_v good_a bless_v they_o and_o still_o to_o extend_v his_o gracious_a providence_n over_o they_o all_o preserve_v and_o uphold_v they_o not_o only_o by_o the_o ordinary_a force_n of_o
their_o nature_n but_o even_o by_o extraordinary_a mean_n unknown_a to_o we_o as_o he_o be_v say_v to_o feed_v the_o young_a raven_n when_o they_o call_v upon_o he_o although_o this_o may_v be_v ascribe_v to_o natural_a mean_n yet_o in_o proper_a speech_n he_o be_v say_v to_o love_v the_o reasonable_a creature_n only_o who_o he_o have_v pick_v out_o of_o the_o whole_a bunch_n whereon_o to_o set_v his_o heart_n wherein_o to_o delight_v and_o take_v pleasure_n this_o choice_n of_o his_o love_n it_o have_v please_v god_n to_o make_v for_o two_o cause_n first_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o excellent_a goodness_n as_o it_o be_v the_o surpass_a beauty_n of_o the_o reasonable_a creature_n the_o which_o be_v frame_v according_a to_o the_o likeness_n of_o god_n make_v a_o kind_n of_o sympathy_n and_o natural_a agreement_n betwixt_o god_n and_o it_o whereof_o it_o come_v that_o god_n take_v exceed_v delight_n and_o pleasure_n in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n the_o faculty_n of_o it_o be_v orderly_o dispose_v and_o endue_v with_o that_o beauty_n of_o holiness_n which_o god_n create_v in_o it_o and_o therefore_o may_v just_o require_v of_o it_o as_o in_o a_o most_o pleasant_a garden_n and_o paradise_n shine_v with_o all_o variety_n of_o the_o most_o fair_a flower_n and_o colour_n the_o other_o respect_n which_o appropriate_v the_o love_n of_o god_n to_o the_o reasonable_a creature_n be_v for_o that_o as_o it_o only_o have_v in_o it_o matter_n of_o exceed_a pleasure_n and_o delight_n to_o god_n so_o it_o only_o be_v capable_a of_o the_o rebound_n recourse_n and_o reciprocation_n of_o the_o say_a pleasure_n from_o god_n in_o the_o which_o as_o have_v be_v say_v the_o chief_a part_n of_o love_n do_v consist_v for_o howsoever_o god_n may_v do_v and_o do_v many_o way_n good_a to_o the_o other_o creature_n in_o that_o he_o feed_v and_o preserve_v they_o in_o their_o several_a kind_n yet_o they_o not_o know_v god_n can_v acknowledge_v those_o good_a thing_n which_o they_o receive_v from_o he_o to_o come_v from_o he_o and_o to_o proceed_v of_o that_o favour_n which_o he_o bear_v unto_o they_o whereas_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o reasonable_a creature_n be_v as_o it_o be_v fill_v with_o the_o sweet_a blessing_n of_o god_n take_v great_a pleasure_n in_o the_o giver_n then_o in_o the_o gift_n and_o rejoice_v yea_o glori_v more_fw-mi herein_o that_o god_n the_o great_a king_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n vouchsafe_v to_o set_v his_o heart_n upon_o it_o and_o to_o take_v pleasure_n in_o do_v it_o good_a then_o in_o any_o other_o thing_n whatsoever_o this_o sense_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v to_o they_o the_o most_o sweet_a happiness_n that_o can_v be_v imagine_v so_o it_o stir_v up_o in_o they_o a_o mutual_a love_n towards_o god_n who_o although_o they_o can_v by_o any_o mean_v either_o profit_n or_o pleasure_n yet_o they_o endeavour_n with_o all_o care_n to_o glorify_v he_o by_o their_o holy_a obedience_n and_o so_o to_o testify_v that_o unfeigned_a love_n which_o they_o bear_v unto_o he_o but_o the_o unreasonable_a creature_n want_v this_o sense_n of_o the_o love_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n and_o so_o the_o reciprocation_n of_o love_n which_o shall_v be_v in_o they_o wherein_o the_o force_n of_o love_n consist_v be_v for_o this_o cause_n not_o to_o be_v admit_v into_o the_o participation_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n beside_o the_o love_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v eternal_a so_o it_o have_v this_o virtue_n that_o on_o what_o subject_n soever_o it_o seize_v it_o make_v it_o eternal_a preserve_v all_o mean_v possible_a to_o procure_v her_o good_a as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o song_n of_o song_n in_o the_o prophet_n ezâ—chiel_n &_o in_o diverse_a other_o place_n of_o scripture_n in_o the_o second_o place_n we_o be_v to_o consider_v that_o not_o any_o measure_n of_o goodness_n in_o the_o reasonable_a creature_n will_v serve_v to_o procure_v the_o love_n of_o god_n for_o then_o god_n shall_v love_v the_o wicked_a in_o who_o we_o know_v that_o there_o be_v diverse_a relic_n of_o his_o image_n yea_o even_o the_o devil_n himself_o and_o all_o his_o wicked_a spirit_n who_o nature_n and_o natural_a faculty_n be_v good_a and_o not_o corrupt_v with_o sin_n in_o respect_n of_o their_o substance_n but_o god_n do_v not_o love_n and_o embrace_v these_o with_o this_o affection_n of_o love_n for_o what_o fellowship_n or_o agreement_n much_o less_o entire_a love_n can_v god_n have_v with_o beliall_n or_o light_n with_o darkness_n nay_o rather_o we_o know_v that_o god_n do_v most_o just_o hate_v and_o abhor_v they_o for_o that_o their_o person_n be_v not_o in_o regard_n of_o these_o relic_n of_o goodness_n to_o be_v account_v good_a because_o it_o do_v not_o prevail_v in_o they_o but_o be_v overcome_v and_o captivate_v or_o rather_o abolish_v by_o the_o contrary_a corruption_n of_o sin_n the_o which_o have_v the_o possession_n and_o command_n of_o they_o ought_v of_o right_a to_o have_v the_o title_n and_o name_n of_o they_o but_o god_n love_v the_o godly_a and_o their_o person_n yea_o though_o they_o be_v in_o part_n defile_v with_o sin_n because_o not_o sin_n and_o evil_n but_o holiness_n and_o good_a prevail_v and_o bear_v sway_n in_o they_o sin_n be_v captivate_v and_o keep_v under_o so_o that_o in_o man_n good_a and_o evil_n do_v in_o a_o manner_n contend_v for_o god_n the_o one_o labour_v to_o procure_v his_o love_n and_o the_o other_o his_o hatred_n in_o the_o which_o conflict_n the_o strong_a and_o the_o predominant_a quality_n prevail_v and_o pull_v to_o the_o person_n in_o the_o which_o it_o be_v the_o affection_n of_o god_n either_o of_o love_n or_o else_o of_o hatred_n gent._n i_o have_v think_v that_o one_o and_o that_o the_o and_o feel_v yea_o hereof_o it_o follow_v that_o as_o any_o nature_n or_o person_n be_v endue_v with_o a_o less_o or_o great_a measure_n of_o this_o goodness_n which_o be_v so_o please_v to_o the_o will_n and_o so_o agreeable_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n so_o it_o procure_v to_o itself_o a_o less_o or_o great_a measure_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o so_o consequent_o of_o that_o
