sin_n in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v at_o the_o last_o judgement_n to_o this_o question_n i_o shall_v not_o presume_v to_o answer_v dogmatical_o as_o not_o remember_v at_o present_a any_o particular_a testimony_n of_o scripture_n whereby_o that_o question_n may_v be_v determine_v either_o in_o the_o negative_a or_o affirmative_a notwithstanding_o my_o opinion_n incline_v to_o the_o affirmative_a viz._n that_o although_o such_o a_o infincere_a charity_n can_v avail_v nothing_o towards_o a_o total_a remission_n at_o the_o last_o judgement_n or_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o person_n whereof_o no_o man_n can_v be_v capable_a without_o a_o unfeigned_a repentance_n and_o such_o a_o true_a faith_n as_o work_n by_o sincere_a love_n to_o god_n and_o his_o neighbour_n yet_o that_o even_o such_o good_a work_n as_o do_v indeed_o proceed_v from_o charity_n and_o be_v not_o do_v hypocritical_o for_o self_n interest_n worldly_a end_n or_o carnal_a motive_n only_o may_v abate_v the_o degree_n of_o the_o future_a punishment_n in_o another_o life_n my_o reason_n for_o this_o opinion_n be_v ground_v upon_o that_o fundamental_a principle_n of_o all_o religion_n that_o all_o man_n shall_v fare_v in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v 5.10_o 2_o cor._n 5.10_o according_a to_o the_o thing_n do_v by_o they_o in_o this_o life_n whether_o they_o be_v good_a or_o whether_o they_o be_v bad_a which_o rule_n be_v understand_v not_o only_o of_o the_o respective_a state_n of_o salvation_n and_o damnation_n but_o also_o of_o the_o degree_n of_o reward_n and_o punishment_n in_o that_o state_n as_o for_o the_o state_n of_o punishment_n no_o question_n have_v be_v or_o can_v be_v make_v concern_v the_o difference_n of_o its_o degree_n express_o declare_v in_o scripture_n signify_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v more_o tolerable_a for_o some_o 48._o mat._n 10.15_o chap._n 11.22_o luke_n 12.47_o 48._o than_o for_o other_o in_o that_o day_n wherein_o some_o shall_v be_v beat_v with_o many_o stripe_n and_o some_o with_o few_o and_o the_o question_n that_o be_v make_v about_o the_o degree_n of_o glory_n be_v but_o a_o novel_a one_o none_o of_o the_o ancient_n that_o i_o know_v of_o and_o very_o few_o modern_a divine_n have_v embrace_v the_o opinion_n that_o assert_n the_o equality_n of_o that_o state_n the_o catholic_n doctrine_n found_v upon_o scripture_n suppose_v as_o much_o disparity_n of_o degree_n of_o glory_n and_o happiness_n in_o heaven_n as_o of_o punishment_n in_o hell_n and_o that_o the_o respective_a measure_n of_o each_o condition_n will_v be_v allot_v and_o assign_v according_a to_o such_o proportion_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a as_o upon_o a_o exact_a and_o infallible_a evidence_n before_o a_o impartial_a judge_n shall_v be_v find_v in_o the_o person_n to_o be_v judge_v with_o relation_n to_o the_o bodily_a life_n pass_v so_o be_v that_o judgement_n describe_v by_o st_n john_n rev._n 20.12_o and_o i_o see_v the_o dead_a both_o small_a and_o great_a stand_v before_o god_n and_o the_o book_n be_v open_v and_o another_o book_n be_v open_v which_o be_v the_o book_n of_o life_n and_o the_o dead_a be_v judge_v out_o of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v write_v in_o the_o book_n according_a to_o their_o work_n and_o that_o among_o all_o sort_n of_o good_a work_n those_o of_o charity_n to_o our_o brethren_n will_v then_o have_v a_o special_a consideration_n be_v sufficient_o intimate_v by_o the_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o his_o own_o description_n of_o the_o last_o judgement_n mat._n 25.31_o to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o chapter_n i_o be_v a_o hunger_a and_o you_o give_v i_o meat_n i_o be_v thirsty_a and_o you_o give_v i_o drink_v i_o be_v a_o stranger_n and_o you_o take_v i_o in_o naked_a and_o you_o clothe_v i_o &c_n &c_n a_o text_n which_o i_o shall_v have_v occasion_n to_o speak_v more_o large_o of_o afterward_o in_o the_o confirmation_n of_o this_o doctrine_n and_o as_o by_o this_o declaration_n of_o our_o saviour_n himself_o who_o be_v to_o be_v judge_n at_o that_o day_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o work_v of_o charity_n proceed_v from_o a_o unfeigned_a faith_n will_v then_o be_v special_o consider_v as_o a_o qualification_n for_o the_o general_n reward_n so_o that_o the_o degree_n and_o measure_n of_o that_o reward_n will_v be_v proportion_v to_o the_o measure_n of_o charity_n seem_v no_o less_o evident_a by_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n speak_v also_o of_o the_o same_o sort_n of_o work_n 2._o cor._n 9.6_o he_o which_o sow_v spare_o shall_v reap_v spare_o and_o he_o which_o sow_v bountiful_o shall_v reap_v bountiful_o and_o in_o the_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o the_o forementioned_a text_n it_o be_v likewise_o add_v as_o a_o reason_n of_o the_o sentence_n of_o condemnation_n to_o be_v denounce_v against_o they_o on_o the_o left_a hand_n verse_n 41._o depart_v from_o i_o you_o curse_v into_o everlasting_a fire_n prepare_v for_o the_o devil_n and_o his_o angel_n for_o i_o be_v a_o hunger_a and_o you_o give_v i_o not_o meit_fw-la i_o be_v thirsty_a and_o you_o give_v i_o no_o drink_n etc._n etc._n signify_v that_o one_o just_a cause_n of_o that_o just_a sentence_n will_v be_v the_o neglect_n of_o this_o great_a duty_n of_o charity_n whence_o it_o will_v follow_v upon_o a_o reasonable_a account_n that_o look_v how_o much_o that_o sin_n of_o neglect_n or_o omission_n shall_v be_v find_v to_o be_v abate_v by_o any_o thing_n do_v by_o the_o person_n to_o be_v judge_v and_o condemn_v for_o that_o fault_n so_o much_o will_v be_v abate_v of_o the_o punishment_n and_o though_o some_o work_n of_o charity_n bear_v no_o proportion_n to_o the_o ability_n of_o he_o that_o do_v they_o may_v be_v reckon_v as_o none_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o our_o saviour_n word_n and_o in_o reference_n to_o a_o man_n discharge_n from_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o sentence_n yet_o it_o can_v be_v say_v that_o he_o that_o have_v do_v some_o work_n of_o charity_n be_v altogether_o so_o guilty_a of_o the_o omission_n of_o that_o duty_n as_o he_o that_o have_v do_v none_o and_o consequent_o can_v be_v equal_o liable_a upon_o that_o account_n to_o the_o same_o degree_n of_o punishment_n and_o therefore_o his_o charity_n how_o defective_a soever_o it_o be_v will_v save_v he_o from_o some_o degree_n of_o punishment_n in_o that_o state_n beside_o all_o the_o validity_n it_o have_v to_o exempt_v he_o from_o punishment_n and_o to_o procure_v any_o temporal_a reward_n in_o this_o life_n what_o other_o consideration_n may_v be_v have_v by_o the_o judge_n at_o that_o day_n for_o the_o abatement_n of_o punishment_n will_v be_v consider_v by_o that_o judge_n who_o be_v infinite_o wise_a and_o just_a know_v
