principle_n of_o nature_n and_o reason_n to_o the_o end_n of_o society_n correspondence_n and_o friendship_n and_o seek_v not_o whole_o himself_n but_o the_o common_a good_a of_o mankind_n and_o man_n and_o well_o understand_v the_o advantage_n of_o peace_n and_o order_n of_o love_n and_o kindness_n among_o man_n 3._o to_o good_a man_n who_o as_o they_o most_o endeavour_n after_o it_o so_o more_o especial_o delight_n to_o see_v it_o and_o therein_o find_v real_a content_a and_o solid_a pleasure_n all_o the_o solid_a delight_n of_o this_o life_n consist_v in_o good_a reflection_n whatever_o else_o may_v pretend_v to_o pleasure_n be_v but_o vain_a and_o imaginary_a as_o the_o delight_n of_o sense_n which_o be_v but_o skindeep_a or_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o world_n which_o be_v but_o show_v and_o appearance_n that_o only_o be_v solid_a content_n which_o arise_v from_o the_o sense_n and_o reflection_n of_o true_a goodness_n and_o that_o chief_o which_o conduce_v to_o the_o general_a good_a of_o mankind_n as_o peace_n and_o union_n most_o certain_o do_v so_o that_o they_o be_v pleasant_a to_o the_o good_a man_n to_o behold_v and_o he_o rejoice_v in_o that_o ravish_a prospect_n and_o reap_v the_o great_a content_n and_o satisfaction_n in_o himself_o to_o see_v the_o beauty_n of_o peace_n and_o order_n of_o love_n and_o kindness_n among_o man_n so_o do_v st._n paul_n to_o see_v order_n and_o uniformity_n flourish_v at_o coloss_n col._n 2._o 5_o joy_v and_o behold_v your_o order_n and_o the_o steadfastness_n of_o your_o faith_n in_o christ_n so_o do_v all_o good_a man_n who_o not_o only_o pray_v for_o unity_n in_o zion_n and_o peace_n in_o jerusalem_n but_o delight_n to_o see_v it_o and_o rejoice_v together_o in_o the_o psalmist_n exaltation_n behold_v how_o good_a and_o pleasant_a it_o be_v etc._n etc._n i_o know_v not_o what_o can_v more_o forcible_o recommend_v the_o loveliness_n of_o unity_n to_o you_o than_o these_o consideration_n of_o its_o necessity_n and_o usefulness_n of_o its_o delight_n and_o comeliness_n it_o be_v both_o good_a and_o pleasant_a if_o any_o thing_n can_v further_o endear_v it_o it_o will_v be_v the_o description_n of_o the_o mischief_n of_o division_n and_o dissension_n of_o confusion_n and_o disorder_n as_o contrary_n best_o illustrate_v each_o other_o and_o sprightly_a colour_n be_v best_a set_v off_o when_o draw_v on_o a_o dark_a ground_n but_o i_o have_v not_o time_n to_o draw_v so_o large_a a_o scene_n suffice_v it_o to_o say_v that_o the_o want_n of_o unity_n and_o agreement_n among_o brethren_n be_v the_o ground_n of_o all_o those_o evil_n which_o obstruct_v the_o prosperity_n of_o the_o church_n or_o disturb_v the_o peace_n of_o the_o world_n and_o so_o be_v neither_o good_a nor_o pleasant_a but_o direct_o opposite_a to_o both_o in_o all_o the_o forename_a instance_n st_o james_n say_v right_o 3._o 16._o where_o envy_v and_o strife_n be_v there_o be_v confusion_n and_o every_o evil_a work_n and_o i_o be_o sure_a that_o be_v neither_o good_a nor_o pleasant_a to_o behold_v not_o good_a for_o the_o public_a who_o peace_n it_o hazard_n and_o endanger_v its_o safety_n not_o good_a for_o private_a man_n who_o interest_n be_v so_o much_o twist_v in_o the_o public_a welfare_n that_o they_o can_v be_v happy_a without_o it_o not_o good_a for_o they_o that_o rule_n since_o how_o skilful_a pilot_n soever_o sit_v at_o the_o helm_n of_o state_n they_o may_v be_v overwhelm_v with_o the_o wave_n of_o sedition_n and_o the_o violent_a hurricane_n of_o mutiny_n and_o faction_n not_o good_a for_o they_o that_o obey_v since_o it_o frustrate_v the_o end_n of_o society_n peace_n and_o security_n and_o leave_v every_o man_n expose_v to_o the_o violence_n and_o insolency_n of_o licentious_a man_n nor_o be_v it_o any_o whit_n more_o pleasant_a to_o behold_v not_o to_o god_n who_o as_o he_o be_v the_o god_n of_o peace_n and_o order_n so_o he_o delight_v to_o see_v they_o maintain_v and_o flourish_v but_o that_o which_o create_v confusion_n and_o disorder_n not_o only_o disturb_v that_o harmony_n and_o concord_n which_o he_o establish_v among_o the_o creature_n but_o reflect_v dishonour_n upon_o his_o providence_n and_o make_v man_n question_v the_o equity_n of_o his_o proceed_n not_o to_o angel_n unless_o it_o be_v those_o malignant_a spirit_n who_o keep_v not_o their_o first_o station_n and_o ever_o since_o they_o be_v banish_v heaven_n be_v cast_v too_o low_a to_o make_v any_o further_a disturbance_n there_o have_v make_v it_o their_o disorder_n and_o miscarriage_n of_o affair_n and_o like_o david_n fret_v their_o righteous_a soul_n even_o with_o dwell_v among_o they_o that_o be_v enemy_n unto_o peace_n there_o be_v several_a respect_n more_o in_o which_o i_o may_v expose_v the_o evil_n that_o be_v consequent_a upon_o the_o want_n of_o peace_n and_o unity_n the_o misery_n that_o attend_v division_n and_o dissension_n and_o that_o dismal_a scene_n will_v add_v grace_n and_o lustre_n to_o this_o prospect_n of_o unity_n which_o be_v so_o pleasant_a to_o behold_v but_o it_o need_v no_o foil_n to_o set_v its_o beauty_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v content_v myself_o with_o the_o description_n already_o give_v of_o it_o in_o the_o character_n of_o good_a and_o pleasant_a which_o be_v forcible_a attractive_n of_o our_o love_n and_o choice_n but_o that_o i_o may_v further_o recommend_v it_o to_o you_o i_o shall_v strengthen_v my_o argument_n from_o the_o seasonableness_n of_o it_o that_o it_o ought_v now_o more_o advantage_n of_o this_o divine_a grace_n i_o shall_v pursue_v it_o in_o the_o character_n here_o give_v in_o the_o psalmist_n description_n of_o it_o it_o be_v both_o good_a and_o pleasant_a which_o two_o be_v prevail_a argument_n and_o the_o most_o forcible_a persuasive_n to_o engage_v our_o love_n and_o affection_n to_o any_o thing_n recommend_v to_o we_o for_o these_o two_o general_o sway_v man_n choice_n and_o all_o their_o pursuit_n be_v after_o what_o they_o apprehend_v as_o good_a or_o pleasant_a but_o before_o i_o press_v the_o motive_n to_o unity_n it_o seem_v necessary_a to_o know_v what_o it_o be_v since_o it_o be_v so_o rare_a to_o be_v meet_v with_o that_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v little_o understand_v though_o indeed_o it_o be_v general_o better_a unstood_v than_o practise_v unity_n however_o single_a in_o itself_o yet_o be_v diversify_v by_o its_o object_n and_o so_o be_v as_o various_a as_o the_o respect_n in_o which_o man_n may_v be_v unite_v but_o i_o instance_n only_o in_o three_o sort_n both_o as_o most_o comprehensive_a and_o chief_o to_o be_v endeavour_v after_o 1._o a_o unity_n in_o faith_n and_o profession_n 2._o in_o worship_n and_o practice_n 3._o in_o mind_n and_o affection_n 1._o unity_n in_o faith_n and_o profession_n which_o be_v so_o name_v by_o the_o apostle_n eph._n 4._o 13._o which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o the_o be_v of_o a_o christian_a who_o by_o faith_n be_v incorporate_v into_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n and_o by_o unity_n of_o the_o faith_n be_v conjoin_v to_o the_o member_n of_o that_o body_n which_o be_v all_o unite_a under_o one_o head_n for_o the_o faith_n be_v once_o deliver_v say_v st._n judas_n and_o be_v but_o once_o deliver_v can_v be_v but_o one_o and_o as_o there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o be_v save_v but_o by_o faith_n so_o there_o be_v but_o one_o faith_n to_o be_v save_v by_o and_o therefore_o they_o that_o hope_v to_o receive_v the_o end_n of_o their_o faith_n the_o salvation_n of_o their_o soul_n must_v maintain_v the_o unity_n of_o the_o faith_n which_o be_v lose_v if_o divide_v and_o be_v no_o faith_n if_o not_o the_o same_o that_o be_v once_o deliver_v in_o this_o respect_n we_o make_v it_o part_n of_o our_o christian_a profession_n to_o believe_v one_o catholic_n church_n because_o all_o agree_n in_o the_o same_o faith_n though_o the_o member_n be_v many_o yet_o the_o church_n be_v but_o one_o because_o the_o faith_n be_v but_o one_o for_o there_o be_v but_o one_o lord_n and_o one_o faith_n eph._n 4._o 5._o one_o lord_n as_o the_o foundation_n of_o all_o and_o one_o faith_n whereby_o we_o assent_v to_o those_o truth_n which_o be_v receive_v from_o christ_n by_o the_o apostle_n and_o by_o they_o deliver_v to_o believer_n who_o be_v therefore_o all_o member_n of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o church_n because_o they_o profess_v one_o and_o the_o same_o faith_n now_o as_o we_o can_v be_v christian_n without_o faith_n so_o we_o can_v be_v of_o that_o one_o catholic_n church_n without_o the_o unity_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o as_o st._n judas_n exhort_v ought_v to_o contend_v earnest_o for_o that_o faith_n once_o deliver_v that_o as_o st._n paul_n press_v it_o we_o may_v keep_v the_o unity_n of_o it_o in_o the_o bond_n of_o peace_n for_o we_o may_v contend_v earnest_o in_o this_o case_n without_o breach_n of_o peace_n or_o charity_n since_o the_o end_n of_o this_o holy_a contention_n be_v a_o happy_a unity_n namely_o of_o faith_n and_o profession_n 2._o there_o be_v a_o unity_n in_o worship_n and_o practice_n which_o spirituality_n when_o we_o manifest_v our_o unity_n in_o the_o faith_n by_o the_o correspondence_n of_o our_o practice_n whether_o in_o the_o same_o rite_n of_o worship_n or_o the_o expression_n of_o our_o christian_a communion_n thus_o we_o be_v make_v one_o by_o worship_v the_o same_o god_n in_o one_o and_o the_o same_o manner_n we_o become_v one_o by_o baptism_n the_o sacrament_n of_o our_o
