much_o belove_v transgression_n it_o be_v necessary_a to_o stir_v up_o their_o fear_n and_o make_v they_o see_v that_o what_o they_o pursue_v will_v rob_v they_o of_o what_o they_o love_v and_o make_v they_o miserable_a as_o well_o in_o their_o body_n as_o their_o soul_n and_o indeed_o as_o it_o rare_o happen_v that_o man_n be_v reclaim_v from_o their_o evil_a course_n but_o by_o some_o such_o disgustful_a mean_n so_o which_o be_v of_o much_o more_o force_n we_o find_v the_o apostle_n take_v this_o course_n in_o convert_v the_o unbelieving_a world_n represent_v to_o they_o first_o the_o guilt_n of_o their_o own_o sin_n and_o the_o wrath_n they_o have_v incur_v and_o then_o the_o tender_v of_o god_n goodness_n by_o that_o mean_v not_o only_o abate_v of_o their_o heat_n towards_o their_o former_a extravagancy_n but_o even_o constrain_a they_o to_o take_v a_o view_n of_o the_o beauty_n of_o religion_n which_o otherwise_o they_o will_v never_o have_v consider_v 2._o but_o beside_o that_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n be_v of_o singular_a use_n in_o bring_v man_n to_o christ_n and_o to_o god_n it_o be_v also_o such_o after_o our_o conversion_n to_o he_o yea_o throughout_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o our_o life_n and_o here_o not_o to_o insist_v upon_o the_o apostle_n persuade_v even_o such_o by_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o lord_n their_o exhort_v they_o to_o work_v unto_o you_o fear_v he_o which_o testimony_n be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o considerable_a not_o only_o because_o he_o do_v twice_o repeat_v it_o but_o which_o show_v yet_o far_o the_o importance_n of_o his_o exhortation_n who_o he_o do_v so_o exhort_v call_v also_o by_o the_o name_n of_o friend_n for_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o my_o friend_n be_v not_o afraid_a of_o they_o that_o kill_v the_o body_n but_o fear_v he_o which_o have_v power_n to_o cast_v into_o hell_n which_o appellation_n show_v evident_o that_o this_o precept_n of_o fear_n be_v not_o only_o for_o servant_n or_o alien_n but_o for_o those_o who_o be_v most_o intimate_o unite_v unto_o himself_o but_o so_o that_o i_o may_v not_o dwell_v too_o long_o upon_o a_o thing_n so_o evident_a do_v the_o apostle_n of_o that_o lord_n advise_v as_o well_o as_o the_o lord_n himself_o s._n paul_n phil._n 2.12_o exhort_v man_n to_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a and_o the_o author_n to_o the_o hebrew_n c._n 12.28_o to_o have_v grace_n whereby_o to_o serve_v god_n acceptable_o with_o reverence_n and_o godly_a fear_n because_o god_n be_v a_o consume_a fire_n in_o which_o latter_a place_n we_o have_v it_o over_o and_o above_o represent_v as_o a_o effect_n of_o grace_n and_o a_o requisite_a to_o make_v our_o service_n acceptable_a now_o though_o from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v it_o be_v sufficient_o evident_a what_o we_o be_v to_o think_v in_o this_o particular_a and_o consequent_o rather_o to_o believe_v that_o something_o else_o must_v be_v mean_v by_o those_o say_n which_o seem_v to_o contradict_v it_o than_o that_o this_o fear_n be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o gospel_n yet_o for_o the_o better_a explication_n of_o this_o fear_n as_o well_o as_o for_o the_o solution_n of_o those_o difficulty_n i_o will_v now_o propose_v they_o or_o at_o least_o that_o which_o be_v most_o considerable_a if_o you_o please_v to_o peruse_v the_o first_o epistle_n of_o s._n john_n the_o four_o chapter_n and_o the_o eighteen_o verse_n you_o will_v there_o find_v that_o apostle_n affirm_v that_o there_o be_v no_o fear_n in_o love_n but_o that_o perfect_a love_n cast_v out_o fear_n because_o fear_n have_v torment_n as_o moreover_o that_o he_o that_o fear_v be_v not_o make_v perfect_a in_o love_n for_o the_o answer_n of_o which_o difficulty_n not_o to_o say_v as_o some_o have_v do_v that_o by_o fear_n in_o that_o place_n we_o be_v to_o understand_v the_o fear_n of_o man_n and_o of_o the_o evil_n which_o they_o may_v bring_v upon_o we_o because_o the_o perfect_a love_n to_o which_o fear_n be_v here_o oppose_v be_v refer_v to_o our_o have_a boldness_n to_o stand_v in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n to_o which_o therefore_o in_o all_o reason_n the_o opposite_a fear_n ought_v to_o relate_v i_o answer_v first_o that_o it_o be_v true_a perfect_a love_n cast_v out_o fear_n but_o i_o say_v withal_o that_o in_o this_o world_n there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o perfect_a love_n and_o therefore_o fear_v not_o to_o be_v eject_v till_o there_o be_v a_o thing_n which_o this_o very_a apostle_n may_v seem_v to_o refer_v to_o when_o in_o the_o word_n before_o these_o he_o affirm_v that_o herein_o be_v our_o love_n make_v perfect_a that_o we_o may_v have_v boldness_n in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n make_v that_o perfect_a love_n to_o appertain_v not_o to_o the_o present_a time_n but_o to_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n wherein_o indeed_o those_o that_o love_n god_n shall_v neither_o fear_v nor_o have_v any_o cause_n for_o it_o but_o let_v we_o suppose_v as_o there_o be_v some_o presumption_n for_o it_o that_o the_o perfect_a love_n here_o speak_v of_o be_v not_o that_o love_n which_o be_v the_o peculiar_a portion_n of_o the_o next_o world_n but_o which_o be_v attainable_a in_o this_o yet_o even_o so_o it_o may_v well_o be_v say_v that_o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n of_o cast_v out_o that_o fear_n for_o which_o we_o be_v now_o plead_v for_o as_o be_v before_o observe_v there_o be_v a_o fear_n of_o god_n as_o of_o a_o tyrant_n or_o at_o least_o a_o very_a hard_a master_n and_o another_o of_o a_o father_n and_o a_o king_n but_o withal_o a_o good_a and_o gracious_a one_o
