notice_n of_o his_o extraordinary_a work_n of_o mercy_n towards_o ourselves_o and_o other_o we_o must_v by_o they_o be_v draw_v to_o love_v he_o true_o and_o to_o yield_v all_o conscionable_a fear_n of_o the_o wicked_a wherewith_o they_o fear_v god_n and_o christ_n come_v only_o from_o the_o consideration_n of_o his_o power_n and_o wrath_n against_o sin_n whereof_o their_o conscience_n out_o thy_o own_o salvation_n and_o practice_n holiness_n and_o religion_n as_o well_o as_o in_o a_o high_o call_v of_o a_o magistrate_n minister_n etc._n etc._n and_o god_n do_v accept_v of_o thou_o and_o thy_o service_n perform_v to_o he_o in_o a_o mean_a call_v if_o thou_o walk_v conscionable_o in_o it_o as_o well_o as_o if_o thou_o do_v serve_v he_o in_o a_o high_o call_v our_o saviour_n glorify_v god_n as_o well_o when_o he_o wrought_v carpenter_n work_n with_o joseph_n his_o father_n as_o when_o he_o afterward_o preach_v and_o wrought_v miracle_n i_o say_v he_o glorify_a god_n as_o well_o in_o the_o one_o as_o in_o the_o other_o though_o not_o in_o the_o same_o degree_n and_o measure_n so_o do_v paul_n please_v god_n as_o well_o when_o he_o be_v make_v tent_n as_o when_o he_o be_v preach_v one_o of_o these_o work_n be_v as_o acceptable_a to_o god_n in_o the_o kind_n of_o it_o as_o the_o other_o therefore_o if_o thou_o live_v in_o a_o mean_a call_v be_v not_o at_o all_o discourage_v thereat_o nor_o grow_v in_o dislike_n of_o it_o but_o do_v the_o duty_n of_o it_o conscionable_o and_o join_v the_o service_n of_o god_n with_o the_o excercise_n of_o thy_o call_v and_o call_v he_o the_o son_n of_o mary_n we_o may_v observe_v and_o gather_v the_o truth_n of_o christ_n humane_a nature_n in_o that_o he_o be_v conceive_v and_o bear_v of_o the_o holy_a virgin_n his_o mother_n and_o therefore_o be_v say_v to_o have_v be_v make_v of_o a_o woman_n gal._n 4._o 4._o but_o i_o will_v not_o here_o insist_v upon_o this_o further_o in_o that_o here_o be_v some_o of_o the_o twelve_o apostle_n mention_v among_o the_o kindred_n of_o christ_n as_o james_n simon_n and_o juda_n this_o show_v that_o our_o saviour_n carry_v a_o special_a affection_n of_o love_n to_o his_o natural_a kindred_n and_o this_o he_o show_v by_o make_v choice_n of_o some_o of_o they_o to_o be_v of_o the_o number_n of_o his_o apostle_n grace_v and_o honour_v they_o with_o that_o high_a call_v and_o dignity_n observe_v observe_v hence_o gather_v that_o it_o be_v good_a and_o lawful_a for_o we_o to_o carry_v a_o special_a affection_n of_o love_n to_o our_o natural_a kindred_n and_o to_o esteem_v well_o of_o they_o and_o to_o show_v our_o love_n and_o good_a esteem_n of_o they_o by_o yield_v due_a honour_n and_o respect_n to_o they_o so_o far_o as_o stand_v with_o their_o call_v and_o our_o own_o thus_o do_v our_o saviour_n to_o these_o brethren_n of_o he_o in_o choose_v they_o to_o be_v of_o his_o apostle_n so_o joh._n 19_o 26._o hang_v on_o the_o cross_n he_o show_v his_o special_a care_n of_o his_o mother_n and_o love_n to_o she_o in_o commend_v she_o to_o the_o custody_n of_o his_o belove_a apostle_n thus_o also_o paul_n express_v a_o special_a affection_n to_o his_o natural_a kinsman_n the_o israelite_n rom._n 9_o 3._o in_o that_o he_o say_v he_o can_v even_o wish_v himself_o separate_a from_o christ_n for_o the_o procure_n of_o their_o salvation_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a see_v also_o rom._n 16._o 11._o and_o so_o it_o be_v good_a and_o fit_a for_o we_o to_o show_v a_o special_a kind_n of_o love_n to_o our_o natural_a kindred_n yet_o one_o caution_n be_v here_o to_o be_v add_v that_o this_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v chief_o of_o such_o kindred_n of_o we_o as_o be_v religious_a and_o holy_a person_n fear_v god_n such_o as_o these_o brethren_n of_o christ_n be_v to_o such_o we_o be_v to_o bear_v a_o special_a affection_n of_o love_n but_o if_o they_o be_v profane_a and_o wicked_a though_o we_o may_v love_v their_o person_n and_o desire_v their_o good_a and_o salvation_n and_o pray_v for_o they_o and_o use_v other_o good_a mean_n to_o bring_v they_o to_o god_n yet_o we_o be_v not_o to_o show_v such_o special_a love_n to_o they_o as_o we_o be_v to_o show_v unto_o other_o be_v true_o religious_a though_o they_o be_v not_o of_o our_o kindred_n neither_o be_v we_o to_o countenance_v our_o profane_a irreligious_a kindred_n in_o their_o sin_n but_o to_o discountenance_v they_o rather_o and_o to_o admonish_v and_o reprove_v they_o for_o the_o same_o so_o far_o as_o our_o call_v reach_v again_o though_o we_o may_v carry_v a_o special_a affection_n to_o our_o religious_a kindred_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o they_o be_v religious_a yet_o we_o must_v take_v heed_n we_o do_v not_o love_v or_o like_a of_o their_o infirmity_n and_o corruption_n nor_o slatter_v they_o therein_o but_o rather_o to_o show_v our_o dislike_n of_o they_o by_o admonish_v they_o in_o christian_a manner_n so_o much_o of_o the_o second_o effect_n of_o our_o saviour_n preach_v at_o nazareth_n namely_o their_o reason_n and_o question_v about_o his_o doctrine_n and_o miracle_n and_o about_o the_o outward_a meanness_n of_o his_o person_n now_o follow_v the_o three_o and_o last_o effect_n that_o they_o be_v offend_v at_o he_o the_o word_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d signify_v proper_o to_o stumble_v at_o any_o thing_n that_o lie_v in_o our_o way_n where_o we_o be_v to_o go_v and_o so_o by_o it_o to_o be_v stop_v and_o hinder_v in_o our_o go_n or_o walk_v in_o that_o way_n this_o the_o evangelist_n appli_v to_o the_o nazarite_n show_v that_o they_o stumble_v or_o take_v offence_n at_o the_o outward_a meanness_n of_o christ_n person_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o education_n birth_n and_o kindred_n take_v occasion_n from_o thence_o to_o contemn_v and_o reject_v he_o and_o his_o doctrine_n and_o so_o by_o this_o outward_a meanness_n of_o christ_n education_n birth_n and_o kindred_n as_o by_o a_o stumble_a block_n in_o the_o way_n of_o salvation_n they_o be_v hinder_v from_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o embrace_v his_o doctrine_n observe_v observe_v hence_o than_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o it_o be_v the_o property_n of_o profane_a and_o carnal_a man_n to_o take_v occasion_n from_o the_o outward_a quality_n and_o condition_n of_o god_n faithful_a messenger_n to_o contemn_v and_o reject_v the_o message_n which_o they_o bring_v and_o the_o doctrine_n which_o they_o teach_v so_o do_v these_o profane_a people_n of_o nazareth_n take_v occasion_n from_o christ_n mean_a education_n parentage_n and_o kindred_n to_o contemn_v and_o reject_v his_o doctrine_n though_o it_o be_v most_o excellent_a as_o themselves_o be_v drive_v to_o confess_v so_o also_o they_o do_v at_o another_o time_n before_o when_o he_o come_v and_o preach_v to_o they_o luke_n 4._o 22._o so_o also_o the_o jew_n joh._n 7._o 15._o have_v hear_v he_o preach_v yet_o when_o they_o consider_v his_o mean_a education_n be_v not_o bring_v up_o to_o learning_n they_o marvel_v at_o the_o matter_n and_o thence_o take_v occasion_n to_o reject_v his_o doctrine_n see_v also_o act._n 4._o 13._o the_o mean_a outward_a condition_n of_o god_n faithful_a minister_n iâ—_n often_o as_o a_o stumble_a block_n at_o which_o the_o world_n and_o carnal_a man_n take_v offence_n be_v move_v thereby_o to_o contemn_v their_o doctrine_n and_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n itself_o and_o so_o be_v hinder_v from_o believe_v and_o embrace_v it_o to_o salvation_n reason_n reas_n they_o judge_v of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o word_n and_o of_o the_o ministry_n of_o it_o according_a to_o the_o outward_a appearance_n of_o the_o person_n that_o preach_v it_o look_v more_o at_o the_o person_n of_o the_o messenger_n then_o at_o the_o message_n itself_o and_o therefore_o when_o they_o see_v the_o minister_n of_o god_n to_o be_v but_o ordinary_a man_n like_o themselves_o in_o regard_n of_o outward_a quality_n and_o condition_n as_o education_n birth_n parentage_n kindred_n wealth_n etc._n

time_n yet_o be_v not_o discourage_v but_o bear_v it_o patient_o and_o content_o remember_v that_o christ_n jesus_n the_o son_n of_o god_n who_o thou_o serve_v and_o who_o name_n thou_o profess_v have_v power_n over_o the_o heart_n and_o mind_n of_o all_o man_n turn_v they_o as_o the_o river_n of_o water_n and_o therefore_o can_v turn_v and_o change_v the_o mind_n of_o thy_o most_o malicious_a so_o stand_v that_o by_o part_v with_o any_o thing_n we_o have_v we_o may_v honour_v and_o serve_v he_o any_o way_n by_o advance_v his_o kingdom_n and_o glory_n or_o by_o further_a the_o gospel_n or_o by_o do_v good_a to_o other_o especial_o to_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n etc._n etc._n in_o this_o case_n christ_n may_v be_v say_v to_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o we_o possess_v in_o this_o world_n as_o of_o our_o good_n land_n house_n yea_o of_o our_o body_n and_o life_n etc._n etc._n when_o there_o be_v just_a cause_n or_o occasion_n for_o we_o to_o part_v with_o these_o for_o the_o honour_n of_o christ_n therefore_o he_o have_v need_n of_o our_o good_n when_o there_o be_v cause_n and_o occasion_n for_o we_o to_o give_v or_o lend_v to_o the_o poor_a especial_o to_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n and_o household_n of_o faith_n for_o in_o so_o do_v we_o lend_v unto_o the_o lord_n prov._n 19_o 19_o therefore_o we_o be_v ready_o and_o willing_o to_o do_v it_o so_o when_o there_o be_v occasion_n for_o we_o to_o give_v to_o other_o good_a use_n as_o to_o the_o church_n or_o maintenance_n of_o the_o ministry_n etc._n etc._n then_o christ_n have_v need_n of_o our_o money_n etc._n etc._n so_o he_o have_v need_n of_o our_o house_n when_o there_o be_v occasion_n for_o we_o to_o receive_v and_o entertain_v in_o they_o such_o as_o fear_n god_n he_o have_v need_n of_o our_o apparel_n when_o there_o be_v occasion_n for_o we_o to_o clothe_v the_o naked_a of_o our_o meat_n and_o drink_n when_o there_o be_v occasion_n to_o feed_v the_o hungry_a and_o give_v drink_v to_o the_o thirsty_a so_o christ_n have_v need_n of_o our_o good_n land_n yea_o of_o our_o body_n and_o life_n also_o when_o he_o call_v we_o to_o part_v with_o these_o for_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o he_o do_v the_o martyr_n and_o therefore_o in_o this_o case_n if_o it_o shall_v befall_v we_o we_o ought_v willing_o to_o part_n with_o all_o for_o christ_n yea_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n hereof_o if_o we_o will_v be_v christ_n true_a disciple_n luke_n 14._o 33._o whosoever_o he_o be_v of_o you_o that_o forsake_v not_o all_o he_o have_v he_o can_v be_v my_o disciple_n against_o they_o and_o so_o make_v some_o tumult_n or_o uproar_n against_o they_o for_o his_o sake_n and_o yet_o this_o may_v seem_v to_o have_v be_v a_o matter_n not_o so_o great_o to_o be_v fear_v spiritual_a evil_n or_o danger_n but_o rather_o outward_a evil_n or_o danger_n like_v to_o come_v upon_o they_o for_o example_n bodily_a sickness_n pain_n or_o death_n itself_o worldly_a cross_n or_o loss_n poverty_n shame_n hatred_n or_o displeasure_n of_o man_n etc._n etc._n these_o and_o such_o like_a external_a evil_n be_v the_o matter_n which_o wicked_a man_n do_v use_v chief_o to_o fear_v as_o for_o spiritual_a evils_n as_o sin_n and_o the_o offence_n of_o god_n or_o loss_n of_o god_n favour_n or_o loss_n of_o heaven_n these_o they_o fear_v not_o half_a so_o much_o gen._n 4._o cain_n fear_n be_v lest_o any_o shall_v kill_v he_o matth._n 2._o 3._o when_o herod_n hear_v of_o the_o birth_n of_o christ_n he_o be_v trouble_v with_o fear_n etc._n etc._n reason_n reason_n wicked_a man_n be_v most_o sensible_a of_o outward_a evil_n and_o danger_n not_o so_o much_o of_o spiritual_a therefore_o they_o fear_v those_o principal_o and_o not_o these_o see_v joh._n 11._o 48._o use_v 1_o use_v 1._o see_v the_o folly_n of_o wicked_a man_n in_o that_o they_o fear_v those_o evil_n most_o which_o be_v least_o to_o be_v fear_v and_o on_o the_o contrary_a those_o least_o which_o be_v most_o little_a cause_n there_o be_v for_o such_o as_o fear_v god_n to_o fear_v wicked_a man_n power_n or_o malice_n see_v on_o the_o contrary_a it_o be_v so_o that_o the_o wicked_a do_v often_o stand_v in_o fear_n of_o they_o and_o indeed_o there_o be_v much_o more_o cause_n for_o the_o wicked_a to_o fear_v the_o godly_a then_o on_o the_o contrary_n more_o cause_n to_o pity_n and_o lament_v the_o misery_n of_o such_o then_o to_o fear_v they_o now_o we_o account_v it_o a_o vain_a and_o foolish_a thing_n to_o fear_v such_o as_o stand_v in_o fear_n of_o we_o etc._n etc._n
first_o but_o a_o very_a slender_a measure_n of_o grace_n when_o he_o come_v to_o our_o saviour_n by_o night_n to_o confer_v with_o he_o and_o to_o learn_v of_o he_o joh._n 3._o 1._o but_o afterward_o this_o seed_n of_o grace_n grow_v to_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o grace_n in_o he_o as_o may_v appear_v joh._n 19_o 39_o when_o he_o come_v open_o in_o the_o day_n time_n and_o show_v his_o love_n to_o christ_n in_o bring_v sweet_a odour_n to_o embalm_v his_o dead_a body_n and_o in_o help_v to_o bury_v it_o 2._o we_o may_v consider_v these_o degree_n of_o grace_n as_o they_o be_v find_v and_o do_v appear_v in_o sundry_a christian_n at_o the_o same_o time_n for_o some_o be_v endue_v with_o a_o lesser_a and_o some_o with_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o grace_n some_o be_v babe_n in_o christ_n 1_o cor._n 3._o 1._o and_o some_o be_v well_o grow_v christian_n some_o be_v weak_a and_o some_o be_v strong_a rom._n 15._o 1._o use_v 1_o use_v 1._o this_o be_v matter_n of_o comfort_n to_o such_o weak_a christian_n who_o be_v trouble_v and_o discourage_v because_o of_o the_o small_a measure_n of_o grace_n which_o they_o feel_v in_o themselves_o and_o because_o they_o come_v so_o far_o short_a of_o the_o grace_n that_o be_v in_o some_o other_o christian_n such_o must_v remember_v this_o that_o there_o be_v different_a degree_n of_o grace_n and_o that_o god_n do_v not_o give_v his_o spirit_n in_o like_a measure_n unto_o all_o that_o be_v partaker_n of_o it_o but_o in_o such_o measure_n as_o he_o in_o his_o wisdom_n see_v fit_a for_o every_o one_o consider_v also_o this_o that_o god_n do_v more_o respect_n the_o truth_n and_o sincerity_n of_o that_o grace_n that_o be_v in_o thou_o than_o the_o measure_n or_o degree_n of_o it_o look_v therefore_o to_o this_o especial_o that_o the_o grace_n that_o be_v in_o thou_o as_o knowledge_n faith_n repentance_n etc._n etc._n be_v sincere_a and_o sound_a whatsoever_o the_o measure_n of_o they_o be_v they_o may_v be_v sound_a in_o thou_o already_o and_o therefore_o rest_v as_o they_o be_v never_o care_v or_o endeavour_v to_o go_v forward_o in_o grace_n such_o have_v no_o soundness_n of_o grace_n at_o all_o in_o they_o for_o if_o they_o have_v they_o can_v not_o posible_o rest_v in_o that_o measure_n which_o they_o have_v but_o must_v needs_o strive_v to_o a_o further_a growth_n other_o be_v so_o far_o from_o increase_v that_o they_o decay_n and_o go_v backward_o in_o grace_n leave_v their_o first_o zeal_n and_o love_n as_o do_v the_o church_n of_o ephesus_n revel_v 2._o 4._o and_o indeed_o such_o as_o go_v not_o forward_o in_o grace_n must_v needs_o go_v backward_o in_o it_o for_o there_o be_v no_o stand_v at_o a_o stay_n in_o this_o case_n now_o such_o as_o do_v thus_o stand_v at_o a_o stay_n or_o go_v backward_o have_v just_a cause_n to_o suspect_v that_o there_o be_v never_o any_o truth_n or_o soundness_n of_o grace_n in_o they_o quest_n quest_n may_v not_o such_o as_o have_v soundness_n of_o grace_n decay_n and_o go_v backward_o in_o it_o for_o a_o time_n answ_n answ_n yes_o this_o be_v possible_a and_o do_v sometime_o come_v to_o pass_v though_o it_o be_v a_o very_a dangerous_a thing_n so_o to_o fall_v away_o but_o such_o as_o have_v thus_o fall_v back_o if_o there_o be_v any_o soundness_n of_o grace_n in_o they_o so_o soon_o as_o they_o come_v to_o see_v their_o own_o backslide_n will_v labour_v speedy_o to_o recover_v themselves_o and_o they_o will_v ever_o after_o strive_v so_o much_o the_o more_o to_o grow_v and_o increase_v in_o all_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o have_v be_v for_o a_o time_n quench_v or_o decay_v in_o they_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n bid_v the_o church_n of_o ephesus_n to_o remember_v whence_o they_o be_v fall_v and_o to_o repent_v and_o do_v their_o first_o work_n use_v 2_o use_v 2._o if_o we_o will_v know_v what_o soundness_n of_o grace_n be_v in_o we_o examine_v ourselves_o what_o growth_n of_o grace_n be_v in_o we_o quest_n quest._n how_o may_v we_o know_v this_o answ_n answ_n by_o these_o mark_n or_o sign_n 1._o by_o the_o abatement_n and_o decay_v of_o our_o sinful_a corruption_n which_o be_v opposite_a to_o grace_n and_o do_v fight_v against_o it_o in_o we_o the_o more_o the_o flesh_n decay_v the_o more_o the_o spirit_n grow_v and_o get_v the_o upper_a hand_n in_o we_o as_o it_o be_v with_o one_o that_o begin_v to_o recover_v out_o of_o bodily_a sickness_n the_o more_o the_o corrupt_a humour_n in_o his_o body_n do_v decay_n and_o be_v waste_v and_o purge_v away_o the_o more_o the_o party_n grow_v in_o strength_n and_o health_n of_o body_n so_o it_o be_v with_o we_o in_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n in_o grace_n when_o our_o corruption_n decay_v in_o we_o and_o the_o strength_n of_o sin_n be_v more_o and_o more_o abate_v in_o we_o this_o be_v a_o argument_n of_o the_o growth_n of_o grace_n in_o we_o as_o on_o the_o contrary_a if_o our_o corruption_n grow_v strong_a in_o we_o this_o argue_v the_o decay_n of_o grace_n in_o we_o try_v thyself_o by_o this_o therefore_o if_o thou_o will_v know_v whether_o thou_o grow_v in_o grace_n look_v whether_o the_o corruption_n of_o sin_n decay_n in_o thou_o look_v whether_o those_o doctrine_n quest_n quest._n how_o can_v it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o preach_v according_a to_o their_o capacity_n see_v he_o speak_v all_o in_o parable_n which_o be_v dark_a and_o hard_a to_o be_v understand_v answ_n answ_n the_o meaning_n be_v not_o that_o his_o manner_n of_o teach_v be_v simple_o easy_a and_o plain_a to_o be_v understand_v of_o all_o that_o hear_v he_o for_o to_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n and_o such_o obstinate_a contemner_n of_o his_o doctrine_n it_o be_v most_o obscure_a and_o dark_a but_o that_o in_o some_o respect_n his_o teach_n be_v easy_a and_o agreeable_a to_o the_o capacity_n of_o his_o disciple_n and_o such_o as_o be_v teachable_a namely_o in_o this_o respect_n that_o he_o teach_v they_o heavenly_a and_o high_a mystery_n by_o similitude_n take_v from_o earthly_a thing_n familiar_o know_v therefore_o though_o they_o can_v not_o at_o the_o time_n of_o delivery_n thorough_o conceive_v the_o doctrine_n that_o be_v teach_v under_o those_o similitude_n yet_o they_o may_v easy_o conceive_v the_o similitude_n themselves_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o literal_a sense_n which_o be_v afterward_o open_v unto_o they_o in_o private_a by_o this_o feed_v you_o with_o milk_n and_o not_o with_o meat_n for_o hitherto_o you_o be_v not_o able_a to_o bear_v it_o neither_o yet_o be_v you_o able_a by_o milk_n he_o mean_v the_o plain_a handle_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christian_a religion_n according_a to_o the_o capacity_n of_o those_o that_o be_v weak_a in_o knowledge_n and_o by_o meat_n the_o more_o exact_a and_o curious_a handle_n of_o high_a point_n of_o doctrine_n so_o hebr._n 5._o 12._o you_o be_v become_v such_o as_o have_v need_n of_o milk_n and_o not_o of_o strong_a meat_n for_o every_o one_o that_o use_v milk_n be_v
