and_o merit_v more_o for_o the_o former_a exercise_v but_o one_o virtue_n that_o be_v continency_n but_o the_o late_a exercise_v two_o namely_o continency_n and_o religion_n the_o noble_a of_o all_o moral_a virtue_n moreover_o to_o promise_v a_o good_a work_n be_v a_o good_a thing_n and_o to_o perform_v a_o promise_n be_v also_o good_a and_o therefore_o for_o they_o both_o a_o man_n be_v hold_v deprive_v they_o of_o some_o great_a commodity_n they_o may_v have_v just_a cause_n of_o sorrow_v but_o indeed_o they_o lose_v none_o by_o it_o for_o as_o a_o vine_n fasten_v to_o a_o tree_n or_o to_o a_o post_n and_o therefore_o less_o obnoxious_a and_o expose_v to_o the_o injury_n of_o the_o wind_n bring_v forth_o better_a and_o more_o abundant_a fruit_n then_o if_o it_o be_v loose_a and_o untie_v even_o so_o be_v religious_a person_n by_o the_o benefit_n of_o these_o vow_n be_v more_o strong_a and_o stable_n and_o more_o free_a from_o tentation_n and_o do_v yield_v great_a increase_n shall_v not_o the_o vow_n of_o the_o religious_a be_v accept_v by_o i_o when_o as_o they_o be_v make_v for_o my_o honour_n and_o glory_n how_o be_v it_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v dear_a to_o i_o when_o as_o they_o be_v the_o mean_n of_o attain_v perfection_n which_o i_o do_v so_o earnest_o desire_v at_o their_o hand_n o_o how_o much_o shall_v some_o earthly_a lord_n glory_n if_o his_o religious_a need_v not_o to_o fear_v in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n for_o see_v they_o have_v for_o the_o love_n of_o i_o forsake_v not_o only_o all_o that_o they_o have_v but_o all_o they_o may_v together_o who_o by_o vow_n of_o poverty_n have_v renounce_v it_o for_o ever_o what_o folly_n and_o madness_n will_v it_o be_v for_o he_o while_o he_o forsake_v the_o world_n to_o have_v a_o will_n to_o go_v out_o naked_a that_o when_o he_o be_v to_o fight_v with_o the_o devil_n he_o may_v not_o have_v wherewith_o his_o enemy_n shall_v take_v hold_n by_o to_o throw_v he_o to_o the_o ground_n to_o abound_v in_o fish_n to_o the_o end_n every_o kind_n according_a to_o the_o condition_n of_o their_o nature_n may_v have_v help_v agreeable_a thereunto_o neither_o do_v it_o beseem_v i_o the_o creator_n of_o all_o to_o be_v overcome_v of_o man_n that_o he_o shall_v give_v i_o more_o than_o i_o give_v he_o and_o therefore_o since_o the_o religious_a do_v by_o vow_n of_o poverty_n give_v themselves_o and_o whatsoever_o they_o have_v in_o the_o world_n and_o to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v serve_v i_o the_o more_o ready_o and_o the_o more_o at_o ease_n they_o renounce_v all_o their_o possession_n honour_n commodity_n and_o recreation_n otherwise_o lawful_a and_o further_o bind_v themselves_o by_o band_n of_o perpetual_a vow_n that_o they_o may_v not_o at_o any_o time_n be_v able_a their_o sustenance_n will_v thou_o not_o have_v they_o clad_v with_o necessary_a clothing_n who_o have_v for_o my_o sake_n spoil_v themselves_o of_o all_o their_o commodity_n of_o body_n retain_v nothing_o as_o their_o own_o he_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o nothing_o of_o who_o god_n take_v a_o care_n 3._o wherefore_o know_v thou_o that_o i_o have_v provide_v and_o still_o daily_o do_v necessary_a help_n for_o all_o because_o neither_o there_o be_v the_o same_o function_n of_o all_o neither_o do_v all_o follow_v the_o same_o manner_n of_o live_v for_o i_o have_v cause_v those_o who_o live_v seperat_o and_o as_o touch_v their_o own_o person_n deprive_v of_o all_o dominion_n of_o their_o possession_n that_o they_o may_v serve_v i_o in_o this_o degree_n of_o poverty_n to_o be_v provide_v of_o possession_n in_o common_a whereof_o every_o one_o may_v have_v the_o mean_n to_o entertain_v life_n again_o i_o help_v other_o who_o have_v embrace_v the_o law_n of_o a_o more_o strict_a poverty_n in_o so_o much_o as_o they_o will_v not_o even_o in_o common_a enjoy_v any_o stable_n or_o certain_a rent_n by_o move_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o faithful_a now_o one_o than_o another_o to_o be_v willing_a and_o ready_a to_o provide_v for_o every_o one_o conformable_o to_o his_o rule_n and_o vocation_n be_v not_o thou_o on_o thy_o part_n want_v unto_o god_n and_o god_n will_v not_o be_v want_v unto_o thou_o 4._o and_o that_o we_o may_v come_v near_o to_o the_o remuneration_n that_o i_o make_v to_o the_o religious_a in_o this_o life_n also_o for_o the_o recompense_n boldness_n &_o poweris_n the_o more_o glorious_a will_v the_o victory_n &_o crown_n be_v that_o follow_v after_o neither_o shall_v thou_o want_v my_o help_n only_o play_v thou_o the_o man_n and_o use_v all_o thy_o force_n for_o the_o maintain_n of_o chastity_n and_o no_o enemy_n from_o within_o or_o without_o shall_v get_v the_o victory_n from_o thou_o and_o see_v thou_o acknowledge_v and_o confess_v also_o that_o it_o be_v convenient_a that_o my_o religious_a servant_n be_v chaste_a as_o i_o their_o lord_n be_o know_v thou_o that_o i_o be_v ever_o so_o hearty_a a_o lover_n of_o purity_n as_o my_o adversary_n who_o calumniate_v i_o in_o very_o many_o thing_n dare_v not_o accuse_v or_o condemn_v i_o of_o the_o very_a lest_o defect_n against_o chastity_n and_o that_o the_o religious_a aught_o to_o be_v such_o their_o state_n exact_v since_o they_o make_v a_o profession_n to_o be_v my_o follower_n &_o imitator_n of_o my_o life_n wherefore_o see_v i_o be_v exceed_o affect_v to_o this_o virtue_n of_o chastity_n and_o regard_v it_o as_o the_o guide_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n requisite_a it_o be_v that_o they_o also_o embrace_v and_o take_v it_o for_o their_o lady_n and_o mistress_n 3._o and_o because_o i_o make_v so_o high_a a_o esteem_n of_o purity_n and_o be_o in_o the_o high_a degree_n avert_v from_o the_o vice_n of_o concupiscence_n why_o will_v thou_o have_v i_o to_o entertain_v a_o dishonest_a servant_n within_o my_o house_n or_o that_o i_o shall_v endure_v he_o in_o the_o same_o how_o shall_v i_o suffer_v that_o any_o service_n shall_v be_v do_v i_o by_o he_o who_o i_o know_v to_o have_v a_o unclean_a mind_n the_o servant_n that_o accommodate_v not_o himself_o to_o his_o lord_n and_o master_n or_o neglect_v to_o procure_v his_o love_n and_o good_a will_n either_o will_v not_o be_v long_a stable_n in_o his_o office_n or_o if_o he_o continue_v in_o it_o will_v make_v very_o little_a profit_n thereby_o and_o will_v put_v himself_o in_o danger_n of_o be_v thrust_v out_o to_o his_o own_o great_a hurt_n and_o no_o little_a shame_n and_o confusion_n do_v i_o require_v at_o my_o servant_n hand_n any_o thing_n unfitting_a unseemly_a or_o impossible_a i_o require_v purity_n which_o be_v a_o principal_a virtue_n i_o require_v of_o he_o that_o he_o suffer_v not_o himself_o to_o be_v supplant_v or_o overcome_v by_o his_o sensuality_n and_o this_o be_v honourable_a i_o exact_v of_o he_o that_o which_o he_o have_v promise_v and_o that_o be_v to_o live_v chaste_o which_o be_v a_o point_n of_o justice_n 4._o further_o i_o long_o to_o know_v wherein_o consist_v to_o leave_v and_o forsake_v the_o
by_o he_o especial_o if_o it_o be_v hard_a and_o troublesome_a this_o be_v not_o the_o desire_n of_o a_o good_a and_o true_a religious_a man_n labour_v to_o perfection_n but_o only_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o seem_v religious_a in_o name_n and_o not_o indeed_o and_o to_o wish_v that_o the_o superior_a be_v a_o statue_n or_o image_n &_o not_o a_o living_n man_n other_o will_v have_v a_o superior_a industrious_a and_o diligent_a in_o procure_v necessarye_n appertain_v to_o meat_n drink_n clothing_n and_o like_a commodity_n and_o in_o all_o event_n to_o take_v a_o special_a care_n in_o patronise_a defend_v and_o help_v they_o but_o they_o wisâ—_n he_o not_o to_o be_v so_o vigilant_a in_o observation_n oâ—_n religious_a discipline_n which_o depend_v oâ—_n obedience_n and_o this_o desire_n be_v much_o worse_a than_o the_o former_a for_o to_o wish_v this_o be_v nothing_o else_o then_o to_o have_v a_o will_n and_o desire_n thaâ—_n the_o superior_a make_v his_o subject_n not_o good_a religious_a but_o idle_a and_o slothful_a who_o may_v have_v care_n of_o their_o body_n and_o neglect_v to_o direct_v their_o soul_n in_o the_o way_n of_o spirit_n who_o may_v be_v a_o good_a companion_n and_o a_o bad_a superior_a the_o subject_n who_o have_v a_o desire_n that_o his_o superior_a shall_v not_o perform_v the_o office_n of_o a_o good_a superior_a do_v manifest_o declare_v that_o he_o carry_v himself_o not_o for_o a_o good_a subject_n under_o he_o of_o the_o first_o degree_n of_o obedience_n which_o consist_v in_o execution_n of_o any_o thing_n command_v chap._n xxv_o religious_a differ_v to_o obey_v because_o he_o be_v busy_v in_o some_o particular_a matter_n of_o his_o own_o he_o displease_v i_o more_o because_o he_o prefer_v himself_o and_o his_o own_o business_n before_o the_o business_n of_o his_o superior_a the_o true_o obedient_a that_o he_o may_v obey_v perfect_o leave_v his_o business_n begone_v and_o unperfect_a o_o how_o much_o do_v those_o religious_a please_v i_o who_o if_o but_o a_o sign_n be_v give_v to_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o the_o holy_a rule_n or_o superior_a shall_v appoint_v do_v leave_v off_o even_o pious_a work_n they_o a_o sign_n be_v no_o soon_o give_v than_o the_o thing_n be_v do_v and_o dispatch_v and_o they_o be_v so_o quick_a and_o speedy_a in_o execution_n thereof_o as_o while_o the_o thing_n be_v yet_o in_o do_v they_o cry_v aloud_o that_o it_o be_v dispatch_v and_o though_o they_o be_v so_o diligent_a and_o quick_a for_o fear_v of_o blow_n yet_o the_o love_n of_o god_n shall_v make_v the_o religious_a more_o prompt_a in_o this_o kind_n since_o love_n be_v more_o strong_a and_o more_o effectual_a than_o fear_n 4._o neither_o be_v this_o to_o be_v see_v in_o the_o galley_n alone_o where_o a_o man_n shall_v see_v the_o chain_n and_o the_o mariner_n with_o whip_n in_o their_o hand_n but_o also_o in_o the_o court_n of_o great_a lord_n for_o i_o ask_v of_o thou_o what_o be_v it_o that_o make_v the_o servant_n so_o ready_a and_o quick_a at_o the_o very_a voice_n and_o call_v of_o their_o lord_n be_v it_o the_o hope_n of_o reward_n but_o that_o be_v more_o liberal_a with_o i_o be_v it_o the_o love_n they_o bear_v towards_o their_o lord_n but_o much_o great_a love_n be_v due_a to_o i_o for_o goodness_n and_o bounty_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o love_n be_v far_o more_o excellent_a in_o i_o and_o the_o reward_n which_o be_v expect_v from_o i_o be_v without_o comparison_n great_a indeed_o the_o slowness_n of_o the_o religious_a proceed_v of_o the_o want_n of_o love_n if_o the_o subject_n be_v better_o affect_v to_o their_o superior_a they_o will_v also_o be_v more_o diligent_a in_o fulfil_n of_o obedience_n in_o which_o kind_n the_o child_n of_o this_o world_n be_v more_o wise_a and_o more_o ready_a than_o the_o child_n of_o light_n 5._o another_o condition_n be_v that_o obedience_n be_v intiere_a for_o such_o be_v my_o own_o obedience_n it_o shall_v be_v enough_o for_o religious_a man_n to_o love_v this_o entiernesse_n if_o they_o thorough_o understand_v that_o this_o be_v my_o will_n and_o such_o the_o superior_n intention_n that_o what_o be_v command_v be_v entire_o do_v there_o be_v those_o who_o be_v only_o ready_a to_o obey_v in_o matter_n of_o great_a moment_n but_o not_o in_o little_a to_o other_o it_o seem_v enough_o if_o they_o do_v part_n of_o the_o thing_n by_o the_o superior_a command_v and_o leave_v the_o rest_n undo_v i_o know_v not_o who_o have_v make_v they_o judge_n or_o interpreter_n of_o obedience_n neither_o do_v i_o know_v whence_o they_o have_v learn_v that_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a to_o obey_v to_o all_o that_o the_o superior_a decreeth_n or_o command_v 6._o let_v they_o say_v when_o they_o vow_v obedience_n whether_o they_o think_v they_o be_v to_o obey_v in_o all_o thing_n or_o but_o in_o some_o whether_o they_o understand_v that_o they_o be_v always_o to_o obey_v or_o only_o for_o a_o time_n and_o if_o they_o understand_v that_o they_o be_v to_o obey_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n but_o for_o a_o certain_a time_n only_o who_o will_v accept_v of_o such_o a_o vow_n sure_o i_o accept_v not_o the_o vow_n when_o it_o be_v of_o silver_n or_o gold_n in_o like_a manner_n alâ—â—spect_n reverence_n and_o obedience_n ought_v to_o be_v give_v and_o use_v to_o the_o superior_a not_o for_o the_o virtue_n wherein_o he_o excel_v but_o because_o he_o suppli_v my_o place_n and_o represent_v my_o person_n the_o end_n of_o the_o second_o book_n the_o three_o book_n of_o religious_a perfection_n wherein_o be_v handle_v the_o principal_a virtue_n of_o a_o religious_a man_n and_o wherein_o perfection_n most_o of_o all_o consist_v of_o religious_a humility_n chap._n i._n son_n it_o be_v good_a to_o speak_v of_o humility_n but_o better_a it_o be_v to_o exercise_v it_o by_o deed_n what_o profit_v it_o by_o speak_v to_o deliver_v many_o notable_a say_n touch_v humility_n if_o in_o all_o that_o discourse_n thou_o seek_v after_o vain_a glory_n and_o fond_o brag_v of_o thyself_o the_o humble_a who_o think_v low_o of_o himself_o busi_v not_o himself_o in_o his_o own_o commendable_a matter_n but_o rather_o in_o remember_v the_o praise_n of_o other_o he_o that_o seek_v to_o seem_v humble_a &_o hunt_v after_o the_o glory_n of_o man_n grow_v in_o pride_n and_o the_o more_o humble_a he_o will_v seem_v the_o more_o do_v his_o pride_n increase_v within_o a_o humble_a man_n as_o he_o acknowledge_v all_o his_o spiritual_a good_n &_o gift_n to_o proceed_v from_o god_n so_o do_v he_o conceal_v they_o as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v and_o lock_v they_o up_o with_o the_o key_n of_o modesty_n in_o some_o secret_a place_n he_o do_v not_o only_o repute_v himself_o in_o all_o his_o work_n unprofitable_a but_o the_o more_o he_o labour_v the_o more_o he_o think_v himself_o bind_v unto_o i_o for_o see_v he_o hold_v whatsoever_o good_a he_o do_v to_o be_v nothing_o worth_a he_o attribute_v and_o honour_v in_o my_o court_n of_o heaven_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o my_o eternal_a father_n and_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o my_o holy_a angel_n in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n he_o have_v not_o the_o more_o honourable_a place_n who_o be_v most_o honour_v on_o earth_n but_o he_o who_o be_v â—he_n more_o humble_a and_o therefore_o my_o spirit_n do_v not_o without_o cause_n repose_n upon_o the_o humble_a because_o he_o be_v diffident_a of_o his_o own_o force_n &_o rely_v altogether_o upon_o my_o grace_n i_o have_v reason_n to_o communicate_v my_o grace_n to_o the_o humble_a because_o they_o do_v for_o the_o love_n of_o i_o renounce_v their_o own_o honour_n and_o estimation_n so_o great_o esteem_v of_o in_o the_o world_n i_o do_v upon_o good_a cause_n bestow_v a_o most_o noble_a crown_n upon_o the_o humble_a in_o heaven_n for_o that_o while_o they_o live_v on_o earth_n they_o take_v the_o crown_n from_o their_o own_o head_n and_o lay_v it_o at_o my_o foot_n 3._o before_o i_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n into_o the_o earth_n i_o be_v most_o particular_o affect_v to_o humility_n &_o therefore_o i_o choose_v a_o humble_a mother_n &_o i_o be_v no_o soon_o bear_v then_o that_o i_o begin_v to_o exercise_v humility_n by_o deed_n for_o when_o as_o i_o be_v the_o lord_n of_o glory_n i_o become_v a_o servant_n &_o subject_v myself_o to_o man_n and_o in_o process_n of_o disturb_v &_o hinder_v not_o only_o the_o good_a action_n of_o the_o mind_n but_o further_a open_v the_o gate_n to_o many_o inordinate_a desire_n and_o sin_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n it_o be_v write_v of_o the_o wiseman_n sorrow_n have_v killâ—_n many_o not_o only_o by_o a_o corporal_a death_n but_o by_o a_o spiritual_a also_o and_o patience_n be_v a_o virtue_n that_o temper_v &_o moderate_v the_o grief_n and_o heavyne_n that_o be_v occasion_v by_o tribulation_n conserve_v and_o arm_v reason_n that_o she_o be_v not_o put_v from_o her_o stand_n and_o overthrow_v by_o the_o
