of_o the_o world_n reproach_n punishment_n temporal_a or_o eternal_a or_o at_o the_o best_a out_o of_o the_o goodness_n of_o nature_n and_o out_o of_o a_o general_a approbation_n of_o goodness_n &_o dislike_n of_o evil_a whereby_o either_o reason_n awhile_o resist_v the_o appetite_n and_o passion_n of_o the_o mind_n which_o fight_n against_o reason_n or_o natural_a conscience_n do_v withstand_v the_o motion_n of_o sin_n upon_o the_o aforesaid_a respect_n or_o the_o like_a it_o evermore_o in_o resist_v be_v accompany_v with_o some_o selfe-respect_n or_o other_o which_o yet_o be_v often_o overcome_v &_o master_v by_o the_o other_o so_o that_o whether_o it_o yield_v or_o stand_v out_o as_o it_o do_v in_o many_o civil_a man_n yet_o this_o strife_n be_v no_o work_n of_o god_n save_v grace_n or_o sanctify_a spirit_n in_o they_o herod_n as_o in_o herod_n see_v this_o in_o &_o by_o instance_n herod_n have_v john_n the_o baptist_n in_o some_o reverence_n such_o be_v johns_n innocency_n &_o integrity_n and_o faithfulness_n otherwise_o that_o right_a reason_n and_o judgement_n in_o herod_n must_v needs_o approve_v of_o it_o commend_v yea_o admire_v it_o yea_o but_o withal_o herod_n be_v addict_v to_o his_o lust_n he_o incestious_o love_v and_o keep_v herodias_n his_o brother_n wife_n which_o when_o once_o john_n reprove_v in_o he_o there_o arise_v a_o conflict_n in_o he_o between_o his_o affection_n to_o john_n and_o to_o herodias_n and_o his_o sin_n especial_o when_o herodias_n make_v request_n for_o johns_n head_n hereupon_o herod_n be_v distract_v in_o his_o thought_n he_o find_v a_o combat_n within_o he_o and_o hereupon_o he_o be_v very_o sorry_a yet_o his_o affection_n to_o sin_n which_o he_o mean_v not_o to_o leave_v 9_o mat._n 14_o 9_o and_o to_o herodias_n overcome_v his_o natural_a conscience_n and_o therefore_o he_o yield_v to_o the_o behead_v of_o john_n here_o be_v a_o great_a strife_n in_o herod_n and_o many_o a_o man_n such_o like_a as_o he_o be_v can_v half_o excuse_v his_o fact_n alas_o it_o be_v against_o his_o will_n what_o will_v you_o have_v have_v he_o do_v etc._n etc._n but_o this_o strife_n be_v not_o from_o true_a grace_n in_o he_o which_o will_v so_o have_v oppose_v his_o sinful_a and_o lustful_a affection_n and_o the_o unjust_a request_n of_o herodias_n daughter_n that_o he_o will_v either_o never_o have_v yield_v to_o either_o of_o they_o or_o if_o he_o have_v it_o will_v have_v bring_v he_o to_o speedy_a and_o unfeigned_a repentance_n for_o that_o fact_n and_o to_o reformation_n of_o life_n give_v he_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o jew_n pilate_n may_v seem_v just_a and_o innocent_a which_o doubtless_o he_o be_v in_o his_o own_o eye_n and_o judgement_n while_o he_o wash_v his_o hand_n and_o protest_v his_o own_o innocence_n while_o the_o malicious_a jew_n only_o may_v seem_v culpable_a but_o indeed_o this_o conflict_n in_o pilate_n be_v so_o far_o from_o excuse_v his_o fact_n that_o it_o make_v it_o so_o much_o the_o more_o unjust_a and_o hateful_a that_o he_o against_o so_o clear_a light_n of_o his_o conscience_n shall_v condemn_v innocency_n itself_o and_o suppose_v he_o have_v indeed_o take_v christ_n part_n and_o acquit_v he_o not_o give_v he_o over_o unto_o the_o jew_n yet_o it_o be_v do_v upon_o those_o ground_n only_o of_o natural_a conscience_n fear_v of_o plague_n in_o his_o conscience_n from_o god_n which_o cause_v the_o conflict_n it_o have_v be_v no_o argument_n of_o save_v grace_n in_o he_o nor_o no_o work_n of_o god_n sanctify_a spirit_n unregenerate_a and_o general_o in_o the_o unregenerate_a such_o conflict_n then_o between_o nature_n either_o approve_v of_o good_a or_o seek_v its_o own_o good_a and_o preservation_n though_o corrupt_o and_o corruption_n be_v no_o argument_n of_o true_a grace_n we_o see_v the_o like_a daily_a in_o natural_a yea_o often_o wicked_a man_n who_o can_v say_v i_o see_v and_o approve_v that_o which_o be_v good_a but_o i_o follow_v and_o do_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a who_o can_v also_o after_o sin_n be_v commit_v condemn_v themselves_o while_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n show_v they_o the_o vileness_n of_o their_o do_n and_o the_o light_n of_o god_n word_n general_o believe_v vengeance_n hang_v over_o their_o head_n for_o the_o same_o but_o shall_v any_o thence_o conclude_v they_o have_v this_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n which_o make_v they_o so_o dislike_v their_o do_n no_o though_o i_o know_v many_o yet_o so_o do_v because_o have_v sin_v they_o can_v say_v they_o do_v it_o not_o without_o some_o strife_n within_o themselves_o before_o and_o some_o acknowledgement_n and_o grief_n after_o but_o if_o this_o be_v all_o then_o shall_v cain_n and_o judas_n be_v saint_n who_o conscience_n trouble_v they_o after_o their_o evil_a deed_n or_o at_o least_o felix_n and_o his_o like_a who_o hear_v or_o think_v of_o judgement_n due_a to_o they_o for_o their_o sin_n tremble_v 24.25_o act_n 24.25_o and_o yet_o live_v in_o their_o sin_n still_o etc._n etc._n section_n 18._o we_o conclude_v then_o that_o not_o every_o combat_n in_o a_o man_n corruption_n 3_o the_o three_o combat_n be_v between_o grace_n and_o corruption_n but_o the_o three_o and_o last_o especial_o as_o in_o part_n the_o first_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o god_n sanctify_v and_o holy_a spirit_n 18._o par._n 3._o §._o 18._o and_o that_o thereby_o a_o man_n have_v put_v on_o christ_n this_o be_v between_o grace_n and_o corruption_n as_o be_v say_v in_o the_o beginning_n whereby_o this_o strife_n be_v and_o upon_o a_o perfect_a hatred_n of_o sin_n for_o itself_o make_v a_o man_n look_v in_o all_o thing_n to_o the_o glory_n and_o will_n of_o god_n sanctification_n and_o it_o be_v proper_a to_o the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n deny_v himself_o and_o to_o oppose_v himself_o against_o all_o sin_n which_o corruption_n look_v at_o where_o as_o affection_n to_o sin_n and_o fear_v of_o evil_a and_o punishment_n make_v the_o combat_n in_o the_o natural_a man_n the_o difference_n between_o which_o two_o combat_n may_v be_v further_o conceive_v hence_o in_o the_o natural_a man_n the_o combat_n be_v in_o several_a and_o distinct_a faculty_n and_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n man_n and_o differ_v from_o that_o combat_n which_o be_v in_o natural_a man_n as_o between_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o reason_n between_o rebellious_a affection_n and_o the_o natural_a conscience_n but_o in_o the_o spiritual_a man_n there_o be_v in_o he_o and_o in_o each_o faculty_n both_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n mix_v together_o &_o not_o flesh_n in_o one_o part_n and_o spirit_n in_o another_o no_o more_o than_o we_o can_v distinguish_v hot_a and_o cold_a in_o lukewarm_a water_n light_n and_o darkness_n in_o the_o dawn_a in_o he_o i_o say_v the_o combat_n be_v in_o one_o and_o the_o same_o faculty_n and_o in_o each_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o which_o be_v both_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n so_o that_o the_o mind_n be_v carry_v against_o itself_o it_o be_v at_o once_o both_o fleshly_a and_o spiritual_a and_o so_o the_o will_n against_o itself_o and_o each_o affection_n against_o itself_o insomuch_o that_o when_o according_a to_o corruption_n we_o will_v do_v evil_a yet_o god_n spirit_n teach_v we_o to_o will_v the_o contrary_a so_o that_o we_o can_v do_v what_o we_o will_v but_o either_o it_o make_v we_o that_o we_o can_v sin_v that_o be_v as_o do_v the_o wicked_a 3.9_o joh._n 3.9_o live_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o any_o one_o sin_n or_o if_o we_o do_v fall_v through_o the_o strength_n of_o temptation_n yet_o we_o sin_v not_o with_o full_a consent_n of_o will_n but_o even_o by_o grace_n hate_v that_o evil_a which_o by_o corruption_n we_o do_v yea_o when_o we_o will_v do_v good_a by_o the_o spirit_n regenerate_v our_o will_n and_o also_o do_v it_o yet_o through_o the_o corruption_n of_o the_o same_o will_n evil_a be_v present_a and_o we_o fail_v in_o the_o do_n of_o it_o be_v not_o able_a to_o fulfil_v 7.18_o rom._n 7.18_o or_o thorough_o to_o accomplish_v that_o which_o be_v good_a where_o then_o we_o find_v our_o will_n carry_v against_o themselves_o our_o heart_n carry_v against_o itself_o and_o against_o its_o own_o like_n in_o regard_n of_o our_o dear_a &_o best_a please_v corruption_n where_o we_o can_v find_v a_o dislike_n &_o loathe_n of_o that_o sin_n which_o corrupt_a nature_n most_o incline_v unto_o &c_n &c_n there_o be_v the_o true_a combat_n indeed_o and_o there_o be_v this_o holy_a and_o sanctify_a spirit_n by_o which_o we_o put_v on_o christ_n which_o thus_o oppose_v sin_n in_o the_o motion_n and_o lust_n of_o it_o as_o most_o opposite_a and_o contrary_a thereunto_o so_o that_o the_o godly_a sin_n not_o in_o god_n account_n when_o indeed_o they_o sin_n and_o do_v evil_a christ_n who_o they_o by_o the_o spirit_n have_v put_v on_o cover_n and_o impute_v not_o to_o they_o their_o imperfection_n and_o fail_n but_o the_o difference_n between_o these_o two_o combat_n in_o natural_a and_o spiritual_a man_n 19_o par._n 3._o &_o 19_o will_v be_v more_o apparent_a afterward_o by_o that_o which_o follow_v and_o by_o those_o other_o property_n of_o the_o spirit_n section_n 19_o the_o second_o thing_n then_o wherein_o the_o holiness_n of_o the_o spirit_n consist_v motion_n 2_o god_n spirit_n show_v itself_o a_o holy_a spirit_n in_o begete_v good_a motion_n be_v not_o only_o in_o oppose_v sinful_a motion_n but_o in_o beget_v holy_a and_o good_a motion_n thought_n and_o inclination_n according_a with_o the_o will_n of_o god_n whereby_o it_o work_v and_o increase_v in_o we_o the_o contrary_a grace_n and_o virtue_n the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o we_o where_o it_o reign_v do_v not_o only_o withstand_v and_o repress_v sinful_a &_o rebellious_a affection_n but_o it_o order_v the_o soul_n aright_o us._n and_o by_o renew_v us._n and_o conform_v the_o whole_a soul_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n even_o as_o in_o a_o well_o order_v commonwealth_n or_o kingdom_n there_o be_v not_o only_a resistance_n make_v against_o rebel_n &_o a_o suppression_n of_o they_o but_o a_o right_n and_o willing_a obedience_n perform_v to_o lawful_a authority_n a_o love_n of_o religion_n and_o justice_n and_o duty_n perform_v by_o every_o man_n according_a to_o his_o place_n one_o to_o another_o even_o so_o be_v it_o in_o the_o regiment_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o a_o regenerate_a man_n where_o the_o law_n of_o grace_n in_o he_o and_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o only_o opposite_a to_o sin_n and_o rebellious_a affection_n which_o will_v overthrow_v or_o at_o least_o trouble_n and_o disturb_v that_o government_n but_o be_v as_o a_o new_a fountain_n and_o wellspring_n of_o goodness_n in_o he_o fruitful_a in_o all_o goodness_n though_o it_o have_v no_o enemy_n to_o molest_v it_o hereby_o then_o may_v we_o also_o judge_v of_o ourselves_o whether_o we_o have_v put_v on_o christ_n or_o no_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n if_o we_o not_o only_o resist_v and_o repel_v sin_n not_o suffer_v it_o to_o reign_v in_o we_o but_o also_o have_v our_o will_n and_o affection_n renew_v to_o a_o like_n of_o goodness_n and_o of_o the_o contrary_a grace_n to_o those_o sin_n which_o we_o will_v subdue_v for_o natural_a conscience_n may_v restrain_v sin_n in_o we_o and_o keep_v it_o from_o break_v out_o yea_o and_o hate_v it_o upon_o the_o forename_a ground_n and_o respect_n to_o punishment_n disgrace_n shame_n of_o the_o world_n yet_o never_o in_o that_o manner_n so_o subdue_v sin_n in_o we_o as_o to_o beget_v contrary_a grace_n as_o for_o example_n a_o covetous_a and_o so_o a_o passionate_a and_o angry_a man_n so_o a_o unclean_a person_n may_v keep_v under_o his_o sin_n from_o break_v into_o act_n outward_o a_o angry_a and_o malicious_a man_n may_v even_o upon_o some_o provocation_n so_o keep_v in_o his_o anger_n and_o conceal_v his_o malice_n for_o the_o present_a that_o he_o shall_v show_v nothing_o but_o love_n and_o fair_a carriage_n even_o as_o we_o see_v it_o in_o esau_n his_o behaviour_n towards_o his_o brother_n jacob_n who_o overcome_v that_o malice_n which_o he_o inward_o conceive_v against_o he_o for_o the_o birthright_n and_o doubtless_o not_o without_o a_o great_a conflict_n in_o himself_o repress_v it_o upon_o carnal_a respect_n and_o consideration_n a_o man_n will_v in_o this_o case_n in_o charity_n have_v be_v ready_a to_o have_v commend_v his_o patience_n and_o religion_n and_o to_o have_v conceive_v esau_n have_v rest_v well_o content_a in_o god_n disposal_n of_o the_o birthright_n from_o he_o even_o as_o we_o now_o in_o like_a charity_n not_o know_v man_n heart_n commend_v and_o conceive_v well_o of_o their_o civil_a &_o harmless_a carriage_n and_o abstinence_n from_o evil_a whereunto_o perhaps_o often_o they_o be_v tempt_v and_o provoke_v yea_o but_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n where_o be_v their_o love_n &_o affection_n to_o the_o contrary_a virtue_n of_o true_a liberality_n patience_n chastity_n temperance_n etc._n etc._n esau_n repress_v the_o evil_a of_o hatred_n in_o he_o for_o the_o present_a but_o where_o be_v the_o contrary_a grace_n of_o true_a and_o sound_a love_n of_o his_o brother_n and_o so_o we_o may_v ask_v in_o the_o other_o and_o like_a particular_n but_o this_o holy_a spirit_n where_o it_o be_v beget_v the_o contrary_a grace_n in_o good_a measure_n and_o make_v we_o who_o be_v proud_a true_o humble_a and_o not_o only_o upon_o by_o respect_n to_o suppress_v pride_n but_o inward_o and_o sincere_o to_o love_v humility_n even_o for_o itself_o so_o it_o make_v we_o of_o angry_a meek_a of_o malicious_a love_a of_o unclean_a chaste_a of_o covetous_a liberal_a of_o profane_a true_o religious_a not_o upon_o sinister_a ground_n and_o motive_n to_o repress_v and_o suppress_v these_o evil_n which_o both_o natural_a conscience_n in_o we_o and_o man_n without_o we_o will_v condemn_v if_o they_o be_v manifest_a but_o upon_o a_o good_a like_n and_o true_a affection_n to_o the_o contrary_a grace_n to_o love_v desire_v and_o earnest_o to_o endeavour_v inward_o to_o have_v and_o outward_o to_o show_v forth_o the_o contrary_a virtue_n hence_o then_o be_v we_o to_o try_v ourselves_o for_o if_o we_o be_v christ_n than_o this_o spirit_n of_o christ_n will_v teach_v we_o to_o have_v a_o great_a pleasure_n to_o give_v to_o the_o poor_a and_o needy_a saint_n as_o ever_o former_o we_o have_v either_o to_o take_v from_o
by_o a_o increase_n of_o faith_n love_n hope_v and_o other_o grace_n put_v on_o christ_n more_o close_o and_o near_o then_o before_o they_o be_v conscious_a of_o their_o own_o daily_a infirmity_n
