holiness_n as_o appear_v by_o the_o sect_n of_o the_o pharise_n and_o therefore_o it_o seem_v that_o in_o this_o reason_n bring_v of_o the_o outward_a fruit_n of_o regeneration_n and_o in_o this_o argument_n of_o their_o election_n the_o faithful_a may_v conclude_v amiss_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v no_o in_o no_o wise_a for_o notwithstanding_o this_o likelihood_n betwixt_o their_o work_n yet_o there_o be_v undoubted_a difference_n whereby_o the_o man_n true_o renew_v and_o regenerate_v do_v and_o may_v discern_v his_o deed_n from_o those_o of_o hypocrite_n for_o further_o and_o better_a proof_n whereof_o it_o be_v well_o to_o be_v observe_v that_o there_o be_v three_o thing_n wherein_o the_o faithful_a man_n may_v make_v and_o put_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o those_o good_a work_n which_o proceed_v from_o himself_o and_o those_o that_o be_v find_v in_o hypocrite_n 1._o the_o matter_n 2._o the_o form_n and_o manner_n of_o they_o and_o 3._o the_o end_n whereunto_o they_o be_v direct_v first_o concern_v the_o matter_n although_o not_o all_o yet_o many_o of_o their_o work_n by_o it_o be_v distinguish_v for_o the_o good_a work_n of_o the_o man_n regenerate_v do_v fetch_v their_o ground_n and_o warrant_v from_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o be_v such_o deed_n and_o action_n as_o god_n have_v command_v but_o the_o work_n of_o hypocrite_n contrary_a wise_a be_v such_o for_o the_o most_o part_n as_o be_v invent_v and_o devise_v by_o man_n have_v no_o ground_n nor_o warrant_n for_o they_o in_o the_o scripture_n of_o the_o which_o sort_n be_v very_o many_o in_o popery_n namely_o their_o diriges_fw-la trental_n mass_n pilgrimage_n shrift_n superstitious_a fasting_n and_o a_o great_a number_n more_o of_o the_o same_o kind_n which_o be_v all_o the_o doctrine_n of_o man_n and_o not_o of_o god_n and_o therefore_o utter_o dislike_v or_o rather_o condemn_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n so_o that_o although_o the_o author_n and_o inventor_n hereof_o flatter_v themselves_o in_o their_o blindness_n be_v persuade_v that_o they_o do_v herein_o a_o good_a work_n in_o obtrude_a these_o and_o such_o like_a upon_o the_o blind_a and_o ignorant_a people_n and_o the_o people_n also_o be_v in_o like_a manner_n persuade_v in_o yield_a obedience_n in_o this_o behalf_n yet_o both_o the_o sort_n of_o these_o man_n be_v for_o their_o do_n condemn_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n for_o that_o their_o action_n in_o all_o respect_n be_v find_v and_o prove_v to_o be_v contrary_a to_o his_o holy_a will_n contain_v in_o his_o word_n it_o may_v be_v that_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o some_o of_o their_o work_n the_o hypocrite_n can_v often_o fetch_v their_o warrant_n from_o god_n himself_o and_o that_o they_o be_v such_o in_o respect_n of_o matter_n as_o god_n himself_o in_o his_o word_n have_v command_v as_o namely_o almes-giving_a prare_a and_o fast_v and_o yet_o in_o the_o form_n and_o manner_n of_o work_v herein_o they_o be_v find_v always_o to_o differ_v from_o the_o faithful_a and_o therefore_o the_o man_n regenerate_v although_o he_o can_v find_v this_o difference_n betwixt_o their_o work_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o matter_n yet_o no_o doubt_n he_o shall_v and_o may_v very_o well_o find_v it_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o manner_n and_o this_o will_v plain_o appear_v in_o this_o that_o always_o in_o the_o do_n and_o action_n of_o good_a and_o true_a christian_n there_o be_v three_o thing_n necessary_o require_v 11.6_o heb._n 11.6_o first_o faith_n and_o that_o true_a faith_n indeed_o for_o without_o this_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n and_o unless_o our_o action_n proceed_v from_o this_o faith_n 14.23_o rom._n 14.23_o they_o be_v sin_n for_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o of_o faith_n be_v sin_n of_o this_o faith_n i_o mean_v not_o now_o to_o make_v any_o large_a discourse_n for_o that_o i_o have_v treat_v thereof_o before_o and_o show_v the_o mark_n whereby_o it_o may_v be_v know_v and_o therefore_o hold_v myself_o content_v concern_v my_o present_a purpose_n at_o this_o time_n for_o a_o difference_n betwixt_o these_o two_o estate_n of_o man_n the_o true_a christian_a and_o the_o hypocrite_n to_o affirm_v that_o the_o faithful_a and_o true_a christian_a have_v in_o he_o this_o settle_a persuasion_n touch_v his_o work_n that_o although_o they_o be_v but_o small_a and_o slender_a and_o far_o unanswerable_a to_o his_o duty_n be_v so_o unperfect_a and_o such_o as_o can_v deserve_v nothing_o at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n yet_o that_o in_o and_o through_o christ_n and_o for_o his_o sake_n god_n will_v accept_v they_o for_o good_a at_o his_o hand_n and_o that_o not_o for_o any_o worthiness_n of_o himself_o but_o for_o the_o worthiness_n of_o jesus_n christ_n out_o of_o this_o faith_n there_o spring_v two_o other_o principal_a branch_n among_o other_o which_o the_o true_a christian_a show_v forth_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o his_o action_n and_o do_n in_o christ_n namely_o humility_n and_o love_n humility_n in_o that_o he_o always_o be_v ready_a to_o abase_v himself_o utter_o abandon_v all_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o his_o work_n and_o willing_o confess_v according_a to_o the_o counsel_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n that_o when_o he_o have_v do_v all_o that_o he_o can_v yet_o he_o be_v not_o simple_o a_o servant_n 17.10_o luk._n 17.10_o but_o a_o unprofitable_a servant_n love_n both_o towards_o god_n and_o also_o towards_o his_o neighbour_n for_o faith_n must_v work_v by_o love_n if_o love_n then_o whereby_o our_o work_n be_v to_o be_v season_v be_v want_v than_o all_o our_o deed_n be_v they_o never_o so_o glorious_a never_o so_o many_o nay_o if_o they_o be_v a_o thousand_o more_o yet_o be_v they_o indeed_o nothing_o now_o if_o we_o look_v into_o the_o work_n of_o the_o hypocrite_n and_o try_v they_o thorough_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o work_n they_o be_v far_o behind_o and_o come_v short_a of_o the_o do_n of_o the_o faithful_a for_o by_o way_n of_o retrogradation_n that_o be_v begin_v to_o try_v they_o by_o the_o last_o point_n and_o so_o ascend_v upward_o we_o shall_v easy_o find_v that_o this_o true_a love_n be_v not_o in_o they_o but_o a_o love_n only_o of_o themselves_o and_o their_o own_o glory_n they_o be_v utter_o void_a of_o humility_n nay_o they_o be_v rather_o to_o be_v say_v to_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o pride_n partly_o in_o that_o they_o be_v ready_a always_o so_o to_o brag_v and_o vaunt_v themselves_o and_o their_o work_n and_o partly_o in_o that_o they_o contemn_v &_o despise_v other_o in_o comparison_n of_o themselves_o and_o this_o true_a faith_n they_o can_v be_v just_o say_v to_o have_v for_o that_o they_o repose_v their_o confidence_n in_o their_o own_o work_n and_o merit_n and_o so_o leave_v the_o trust_n &_o confidence_n which_o they_o ought_v to_o have_v in_o christ_n and_o thus_o according_a to_o the_o say_n of_o the_o prophet_n 2.13_o jer._n 2.13_o they_o forsake_v the_o fountain_n of_o live_a water_n to_o dig_v they_o pit_n even_o break_v pit_n that_o can_v hold_v no_o water_n as_o in_o the_o manner_n there_o be_v a_o manifest_a difference_n to_o be_v find_v betwixt_o the_o work_n of_o the_o faithful_a and_o the_o work_n of_o the_o hypocrite_n so_o in_o the_o end_n also_o whereunto_o their_o work_n be_v refer_v the_o one_o may_v be_v easy_o discern_v from_o the_o other_o for_o the_o faithful_a man_n make_v these_o to_o be_v the_o end_n and_o drift_n of_o his_o good_a work_n 1._o and_o principal_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n 2._o the_o good_a and_o benefit_n of_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n and_o 3._o the_o declaration_n and_o performance_n of_o his_o christian_a duty_n otherwise_o but_o with_o the_o hypocrite_n it_o be_v not_o so_o for_o he_o in_o his_o good_a work_n either_o seek_v thereby_o to_o get_v and_o purchase_v himself_o a_o name_n of_o holiness_n among_o man_n as_o we_o may_v read_v mat._n 6._o do_v all_o to_o be_v see_v of_o man_n or_o else_o to_o hide_v and_o conceal_v other_o enormous_a &_o filthy_a corruption_n that_o will_v happy_o break_v out_o to_o the_o great_a shame_n of_o themselves_o and_o no_o little_a offence_n to_o other_o as_o do_v the_o pharise_n mat._n 23._o 23._o mat._n 23.14_o &_o 23._o which_o under_o the_o colour_n of_o long_a prayer_n be_v note_v just_o by_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n to_o devour_v widow_n house_n and_o under_o the_o colour_n of_o tthe_v a_o little_a mint_n and_o annise_v and_o cummin_n and_o be_v too_o too_o scrupulous_a and_o curious_a in_o matter_n of_o small_a importance_n do_v leave_v the_o weighty_a matter_n of_o the_o law_n as_o judgement_n and_o mercy_n and_o fidelity_n and_o thus_o go_v sheer_a away_o with_o injustice_n and_o violation_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n so_o that_o these_o three_o thing_n in_o work_n be_v then_o due_o
so_o violent_o rush_v upon_o he_o oftentimes_o that_o they_o do_v as_o it_o be_v altogether_o frustrate_a and_o make_v void_a the_o former_a doctrine_n concern_v the_o several_a effect_n of_o faith_n into_o the_o handle_n of_o the_o which_o particular_n i_o will_v now_o have_v enter_v but_o that_o a_o more_o full_a and_o further_o handle_v thereof_o appertain_v more_o proper_o unto_o the_o next_o general_a assault_n which_o be_v the_o weakness_n of_o repentance_n unto_o which_o place_n i_o be_o purpose_v to_o reserve_v they_o chap._n viii_o of_o another_o person_n trouble_v with_o the_o doubt_n of_o faith_n the_o next_o person_n trouble_v with_o the_o doubt_n of_o faith_n faith_n a_o regenerate_v person_n trouble_v with_o the_o doubt_n of_o faith_n be_v he_o that_o be_v already_o renew_a pass_v the_o womb_n of_o his_o new_a birth_n and_o have_v already_o receive_v at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o some_o evident_a witness_n and_o good_a assurance_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o he_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o one_o of_o the_o number_n of_o god_n elect_v but_o the_o force_n and_o influence_n of_o his_o flâ—sh_n have_v recourse_n back_o again_o with_o he_o the_o same_o assurance_n for_o the_o time_n seem_v to_o be_v cancel_v and_o clean_o raze_v out_o and_o he_o feel_v not_o the_o joy_n and_o comfort_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o far_o and_o in_o such_o measure_n as_o at_o other_o former_a time_n and_o therefore_o he_o begin_v great_o to_o doubt_v of_o his_o estate_n not_o so_o much_o whether_o he_o have_v a_o faith_n or_o not_o as_o whether_o his_o faith_n be_v a_o true_a faith_n or_o only_o temporary_a and_o for_o a_o time_n and_o such_o a_o one_o as_o be_v incident_a to_o the_o very_a reprobate_n and_o castawaye_n upon_o which_o doubtfulness_n there_o do_v arise_v oftentimes_o in_o he_o many_o strong_a and_o grievous_a conflict_n and_o that_o so_o much_o the_o rather_o because_o that_o the_o sorrowful_a soul_n be_v not_o well_o instruct_v or_o at_o the_o least_o not_o well_o remember_v the_o nature_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o difference_n of_o true_a faith_n from_o that_o which_o be_v only_o feign_v temporary_a dead_a and_o hypocritical_a and_o withal_o be_v too_o too_o ready_a &_o incline_v to_o suspect_v ever_o the_o worst_a that_o may_v be_v of_o itself_o turn_v every_o motion_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o infirmity_n of_o nature_n to_o be_v so_o many_o reason_n to_o drive_v he_o forward_o to_o despair_v against_o this_o evil_a therefore_o we_o be_v to_o use_v these_o remedy_n first_o the_o man_n which_o doubt_v in_o this_o manner_n of_o his_o faith_n comfort_n mean_n of_o comfort_n and_o the_o truth_n thereof_o be_v to_o consider_v and_o call_v to_o mind_n to_o his_o comfort_n this_o one_o property_n which_o be_v incident_a unto_o true_a faith_n that_o it_o be_v not_o ever_o in_o the_o full_a tide_n but_o sometime_o it_o ebb_v and_o fall_v yea_o and_o that_o full_a low_a neither_o do_v that_o full_a assurance_n and_o inward_a witness_n speak_v so_o plain_o to_o the_o pacify_v of_o the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n but_o sometime_o more_o than_o other_o it_o seem_v to_o give_v a_o more_o cold_a and_o weak_a testimony_n and_o sometime_o none_o at_o all_o for_o though_o this_o testimony_n of_o assurance_n be_v a_o effect_n of_o faith_n as_o have_v be_v say_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o always_o discern_v of_o they_o which_o be_v endue_v with_o it_o no_o though_o it_o have_v be_v sometime_o feel_v and_o perceive_v before_o example_n hereof_o we_o may_v have_v in_o david_n a_o man_n before_o regenerate_v &_o such_o a_o one_o as_o have_v often_o feel_v in_o himself_o this_o inward_a testimony_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o assure_v his_o heart_n that_o he_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o faith_n grow_v in_o he_o so_o weak_a sometime_o and_o the_o flesh_n so_o mighty_o prevail_v that_o as_o one_o utter_o destitute_a of_o this_o joy_n and_o comfort_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o though_o the_o spirit_n have_v utter_o give_v he_o up_o he_o pray_v carnest_o to_o have_v the_o same_o restore_v for_o it_o be_v with_o faith_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o moon_n which_o sometime_o give_v her_o full_a light_n and_o sometime_o be_v eclipse_v and_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o sun_n which_o sometime_o do_v shine_v in_o his_o full_a strength_n and_o sometime_o be_v shadow_v and_o hide_v under_o cloud_n like_o the_o tree_n that_o sometime_o flourish_v be_v fresh_a and_o green_a and_o sometime_o fade_v again_o seem_v dry_a and_o dead_a as_o blast_v or_o like_o the_o child_n within_o the_o womb_n that_o sometime_o move_v strong_o and_o sometime_o again_o rest_v a_o long_a time_n quiet_a and_o void_a of_o sensible_a and_o apparent_a motion_n now_o as_o it_o be_v against_o reason_n to_o faith_n the_o moon_n be_v darken_v and_o eclipse_v and_o the_o sun_n be_v hide_v and_o shadow_v under_o a_o cloud_n therefore_o there_o be_v no_o moon_n no_o sun_n at_o all_o the_o tree_n be_v dry_a and_o naked_a and_o therefore_o be_v decay_v the_o child_n do_v not_o show_v a_o continual_a and_o apparent_a motion_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v dead_a within_o the_o womb_n so_o it_o be_v very_o absurd_a also_o to_o say_v that_o because_o thy_o faith_n be_v eclipse_v and_o darken_v by_o the_o cloud_n of_o our_o imperfection_n bite_v and_o beat_v with_o the_o outrageousness_n of_o the_o flesh_n lie_v still_o and_o quiet_a without_o her_o wont_a motion_n that_o therefore_o it_o be_v cease_v to_o be_v a_o faith_n or_o be_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o and_o therefore_o this_o reason_n can_v be_v no_o reason_n at_o all_o to_o prove_v the_o nullity_n of_o faith_n unless_o it_o first_o be_v prove_v that_o faith_n do_v always_o increase_v and_o never_o decrease_v and_o that_o have_v once_o bring_v forth_o the_o full_a assurance_n aforesaid_a it_o do_v always_o keep_v and_o retain_v the_o same_o inviolable_a the_o second_o mean_n of_o comfort_n in_o this_o case_n be_v to_o know_v persect_o comfort_n mean_v 〈◊〉_d comfort_n and_o to_o retain_v sure_o the_o true_a difference_n of_o true_a faith_n and_o feign_a for_o this_o be_v a_o second_o doubt_n rise_v from_o the_o defect_n of_o the_o aforesaid_a assurance_n whether_o their_o faith_n be_v true_a or_o no_o i_o think_v it_o necessary_a in_o the_o next_o place_n to_o consider_v how_o this_o true_a faith_n may_v be_v descry_v from_o that_o which_o be_v counterfeit_a false_a and_o temporary_a it_o be_v therefore_o to_o be_v understand_v that_o true_a faith_n may_v be_v discern_v and_o know_v by_o these_o mark_n first_o in_o that_o it_o yield_v at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o though_o not_o always_o this_o sure_a persuasion_n that_o all_o our_o sin_n be_v remit_v and_o forgive_v and_o that_o not_o for_o any_o merit_n or_o desert_n of_o we_o but_o by_o and_o through_o the_o merit_n and_o precious_a bloodshedding_n of_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n second_o upon_o this_o ensue_v or_o rather_o together_o with_o this_o be_v annex_v a_o boldness_n and_o confidence_n to_o approach_v unto_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n rom._n 5._o with_o a_o assurance_n in_o our_o heart_n and_o conscience_n that_o we_o shall_v obtain_v remission_n of_o all_o our_o sin_n and_o be_v free_o justify_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o three_o the_o outward_a effect_n of_o faith_n will_v also_o appear_v and_o show_v themselves_o in_o our_o work_n in_o that_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o our_o affection_n a_o loathe_n and_o a_o detestation_n of_o sin_n a_o love_n of_o god_n a_o reverend_a fear_n to_o offend_v he_o be_v to_o we_o so_o gracious_a and_o love_a a_o father_n a_o zeal_n of_o his_o glory_n and_o a_o earnest_a care_n and_o desire_v to_o live_v according_a to_o his_o will_n with_o many_o other_o such_o like_a these_o effect_n if_o our_o faith_n be_v a_o true_a faith_n indeed_o do_v then_o show_v forth_o themselves_o in_o some_o measure_n when_o as_o our_o faith_n be_v at_o that_o full_a tide_n though_o faith_n be_v somewhat_o weaken_v they_o seem_v to_o be_v afterward_o lessen_v and_o rebate_v in_o us._n but_o as_o for_o that_o fame_a faith_n it_o can_v make_v this_o application_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n neither_o can_v it_o come_v with_o such_o full_a assurance_n to_o crave_v and_o obtain_v remission_n at_o god_n hand_n for_o though_o it_o seem_v to_o bring_v forth_o a_o certain_a joy_n in_o he_o think_v good_a to_o deal_v with_o some_o more_o sharp_o that_o they_o may_v be_v sound_o cure_v so_o god_n in_o cure_v sin_n though_o all_o the_o wound_n thereof_o be_v deadly_a yet_o some_o be_v more_o open_a than_o other_o some_o more_o inward_a and_o infectious_a than_o other_o and_o must_v therefore_o of_o necessity_n be_v search_v deep_a that_o our_o conversion_n may_v be_v the_o perfect_a in_o this_o cafe_z therefore_o let_v we_o be_v content_v to_o subject_v ourselves_o to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n who_o as_o i_o have_v say_v doubtless_o dispose_v all_o to_o the_o furtherance_n of_o his_o glory_n and_o benefit_n of_o his_o child_n and_o that_o after_o one_o sort_n with_o one_o and_o otherwise_o with_o another_o and_o not_o alike_o with_o all_o in_o their_o conversion_n and_o yet_o so_o with_o every_o one_o as_o in_o his_o wisdom_n he_o see_v to_o be_v best_a and_o most_o effectual_a for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o their_o salvation_n but_o this_o in_o general_n chap._n vii_o of_o special_a thing_n in_o man_n conversion_n 2_o in_o more_o special_a in_o the_o course_n and_o case_n of_o man_n conversion_n be_v matter_n so_o hard_a and_o difficult_a to_o be_v discern_v and_o judge_v and_o faith_n in_o such_o sort_n grow_v and_o creep_v on_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n that_o though_o the_o truth_n thereof_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n yet_o because_o it_o do_v not_o lively_o manifest_v itself_o by_o plain_a effect_n we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o discern_v and_o know_v it_o for_o as_o the_o corn_n chit_v and_o continual_o grow_v in_o the_o earth_n and_o we_o see_v not_o how_o neither_o be_v we_o able_a at_o the_o first_o show_n to_o make_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o good_a corn_n and_o grass_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o corn_n be_v in_o itself_o come_v indeed_o so_o faith_n when_o it_o be_v first_o hatch_v and_o begin_v in_o our_o heart_n come_v forth_o in_o such_o sort_n that_o it_o can_v easy_o be_v descry_v

have_v a_o life_n though_o as_o yet_o it_o have_v no_o fruit_n but_o only_o a_o show_n of_o leaf_n and_o blossom_n if_o again_o it_o be_v demand_v how_o it_o can_v be_v that_o it_o shall_v effect_v these_o two_o and_o not_o the_o fruit_n the_o answer_n will_v be_v that_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a because_o these_o by_o the_o course_n of_o nature_n be_v precedent_n and_o go_v before_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o these_o that_o be_v the_o leaf_n and_o blossom_n may_v be_v and_o the_o plant_n by_o they_o may_v be_v sure_o know_v to_o have_v life_n though_o the_o other_o that_o be_v the_o fruit_n be_v not_o yet_o effect_v so_o say_v i_o of_o the_o plant_n of_o faith_n although_o it_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o the_o fruit_n of_o full_a assurance_n show_v forth_o it_o self_n yet_o it_o have_v the_o blossom_n that_o be_v the_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n the_o hearty_a de_fw-fr testation_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o earnest_a love_n of_o righteousness_n be_v this_o faith_n now_o dead_a or_o be_v it_o not_o at_o all_o because_o it_o have_v not_o yet_o bring_v forth_o this_o notable_a effect_n of_o certainty_n and_o assurance_n god_n forbid_v but_o see_v it_o have_v these_o other_o effect_n so_o manifest_o appear_v we_o may_v assure_v ourselves_o that_o we_o have_v a_o faith_n already_o engender_v in_o we_o which_o will_v bring_v forth_o that_o other_o excellent_a fruit_n of_o such_o apparent_a motion_n thou_o can_v not_o descry_v it_o to_o be_v within_o thyself_o yet_o in_o that_o alteration_n that_o thou_o shall_v find_v with_o thyself_o thou_o may_v easy_o conjecture_v evident_o appear_v by_o the_o example_n of_o the_o church_n which_o be_v deprive_v for_o the_o tune_n of_o this_o inward_a joy_n of_o the_o presence_n and_o effectual_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o though_o christ_n be_v depart_v from_o she_o be_v say_v to_o rise_v out_o of_o her_o bed_n 3.2_o cant._n 3.2_o and_o to_o go_v about_o the_o city_n by_o the_o street_n and_o open_a place_n to_o seek_v he_o that_o her_o soul_n do_v love_n and_o yet_o this_o mourning_n and_o sorrow_n be_v so_o far_o off_o from_o be_v a_o cause_n of_o such_o distrust_n comfort_n 4._o mean_n of_o comfort_n that_o if_o choose_a vessel_n and_o a_o elect_a child_n of_o god_n be_v it_o likely_a think_v thou_o that_o he_o that_o be_v unregenerate_a and_o abide_v still_o in_o the_o corruption_n of_o his_o flesh_n and_o take_v a_o pleasure_n to_o walk_v in_o the_o filthy_a lust_n thereof_o shall_v take_v such_o joy_n and_o solace_n in_o the_o spirit_n as_o that_o he_o can_v not_o tolerate_v or_o abide_v to_o have_v the_o same_o absent_a from_o he_o will_v he_o mourn_v and_o sigh_v because_o he_o withdraw_v himself_o from_o he_o or_o will_v he_o long_o after_o the_o spirit_n and_o wish_v and_o desire_v to_o true_a repentance_n and_o which_o i_o account_v as_o the_o forerunner_n of_o repentance_n be_v only_o incident_a and_o do_v proper_o appertain_v to_o the_o elect_a and_o choose_a of_o the_o lord_n and_o be_v find_v to_o have_v a_o far_o further_a step_n than_o have_v the_o former_a and_o therefore_o lest_o we_o deceive_v ourselves_o herein_o as_o hypocrite_n often_o do_v let_v we_o in_o a_o word_n or_o two_o as_o brief_o as_o we_o may_v observe_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o these_o two_o kind_n of_o sorrow_n this_o counterfeit_a and_o hypocritical_a sorrow_n sorrow_n counterf_n it_o and_o hypocritical_a sorrow_n which_o as_o i_o say_v be_v find_v in_o hypocrite_n arise_v from_o the_o law_n and_o that_o only_a in_o consideration_n of_o the_o heavy_a and_o terrible_a judgement_n in_o the_o same_o denounce_v against_o the_o transgressor_n thereof_o and_o hereupon_o it_o be_v that_o they_o mourn_v and_o sigh_v only_o for_o that_o they_o see_v and_o perceive_v themselves_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o great_a sin_n and_o wiekedness_n by_o force_n and_o by_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n to_o be_v bring_v into_o a_o dangerous_a or_o a_o damnable_a estate_n but_o as_o for_o the_o sin_n itself_o which_o by_o they_o be_v commit_v day_n by_o day_n although_o it_o be_v in_o the_o proper_a nature_n thereof_o never_o so_o filthy_a or_o abominable_a yet_o do_v they_o not_o mourn_v for_o it_o but_o remain_v still_o in_o they_o with_o as_o great_a love_n and_o take_v as_o great_a pleasure_n therein_o and_o have_v as_o great_a a_o desire_n to_o commit_v the_o same_o still_o as_o ever_o they_o have_v at_o any_o time_n before_o so_o small_a a_o alteration_n be_v find_v to_o follow_v in_o they_o upon_o this_o their_o sorrow_n and_o so_o far_o off_o be_v they_o from_o have_v even_o this_o first_o mark_n of_o true_a repentance_n but_o it_o be_v far_o otherwise_o with_o the_o man_n regenerate_v regenerate_v difference_n betwixt_o the_o sorrow_n of_o the_o unregenerate_a and_o regenerate_v for_o although_o his_o sorrow_n begin_v in_o deed_n in_o the_o law_n for_o that_o thereby_o he_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n first_o of_o his_o sin_n and_o second_o of_o the_o heavy_a judgement_n by_o the_o law_n due_a unto_o the_o same_o yet_o do_v not_o his_o sorrow_n there_o stay_v and_o make_v a_o end_n but_o end_v indeed_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o he_o be_v find_v to_o be_v sad_a &_o heavy_a not_o only_o in_o respect_n or_o regard_n of_o the_o danger_n whereinto_o by_o sin_n he_o be_v bring_v but_o also_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o sin_n itself_o which_o he_o now_o utter_o hate_v and_o detest_v for_o that_o he_o see_v and_o find_v it_o to_o be_v so_o odious_a and_o loathsome_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n not_o only_o because_o he_o be_v a_o severe_a judge_n ready_a to_o take_v revenge_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o his_o law_n as_o do_v the_o reprobate_n but_o also_o because_o they_o find_v and_o feel_v he_o to_o be_v so_o good_a so_o gracious_a so_o love_v and_o so_o merciful_a a_o father_n against_o who_o he_o so_o ungracious_o and_o unnatural_o like_o a_o rebellious_a child_n have_v transgress_v and_o although_o that_o this_o his_o sorrow_n in_o these_o respect_n be_v find_v and_o prove_v to_o be_v great_a yet_o be_v he_o not_o therein_o leave_v comfortless_a but_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o sorrow_n find_v comfort_n as_o shall_v appear_v hereafter_o again_o this_o sorrow_n proceed_v of_o the_o fear_n of_o punishment_n of_o sin_n by_o the_o law_n bring_v forth_o desperation_n in_o the_o reprobate_n as_o appear_v in_o cain_n and_o judas_n and_o other_o if_o it_o stay_v only_o in_o the_o law_n and_o have_v no_o regard_n unto_o the_o gospel_n for_o the_o law_n bring_v nothing_o else_o but_o terror_n and_o judgement_n the_o law_n indeed_o will_v justify_v and_o upon_o instification_n minister_v unto_o man_n great_a consolation_n but_o it_o must_v in_o all_o point_n according_a to_o the_o purity_n thereof_o be_v fulfil_v which_o we_o through_o our_o weakness_n be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v and_o therefore_o instead_o of_o justify_v we_o reap_v a_o curse_n and_o instead_o of_o consolation_n do_v gain_v sorrow_n which_o sorrow_n be_v wrought_v and_o effect_v in_o the_o heart_n by_o the_o spirit_n indeed_o but_o it_o be_v by_o that_o spirit_n which_o the_o apostle_n call_v wait_v the_o lord_n leisure_n to_o expect_v his_o leisure_n and_o stay_v the_o time_n till_o he_o shall_v think_v it_o most_o convenient_a to_o grant_v and_o perform_v thy_o suit_n assure_v thyself_o shall_v be_v accomplish_v and_o fulfil_v chap._n xv._o against_o affliction_n and_o outward_a event_n as_o the_o outward_a thing_n which_o happen_v unto_o we_o both_o in_o our_o body_n name_n and_o because_o as_o he_o suppose_v or_o as_o he_o can_v see_v there_o be_v none_o of_o god_n child_n that_o do_v equal_a and_o match_v he_o in_o the_o extremity_n of_o these_o his_o misery_n or_o else_o because_o he_o judge_v and_o take_v this_o which_o indeed_o be_v not_o to_o be_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o trouble_n of_o the_o righteous_a and_o judgement_n of_o the_o reprobate_n i_o mean_v the_o greatness_n and_o the_o long_a continuance_n of_o the_o afftiction_n for_o the_o better_a satisfy_n of_o such_o person_n and_o for_o the_o reformation_n of_o this_o their_o corrupt_a opinion_n and_o judgement_n i_o purpose_v to_o observe_v and_o keep_v this_o course_n and_o order_n first_o to_o show_v and_o prove_v that_o the_o original_n of_o the_o affliction_n lay_v upon_o god_n child_n be_v not_o hatred_n in_o god_n but_o his_o love_n towards_o those_o that_o be_v afflict_v second_o that_o the_o same_o affliction_n be_v such_o as_o both_o do_v and_o of_o necessity_n must_v befall_v we_o will_v he_o be_v thus_o chary_a and_o careful_a as_o he_o be_v not_o to_o quench_v the_o small_a beginning_n and_o spring_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o confidence_n and_o of_o our_o hope_n in_o he_o or_o if_o it_o be_v in_o hatred_n and_o not_o in_o love_n and_o favour_n towards_o we_o may_v he_o or_o will_v he_o not_o rather_o cut_v and_o break_v asunder_o the_o very_a cable_n of_o our_o trust_n and_o affiance_n that_o so_o we_o may_v utter_o perish_v and_o be_v consume_v with_o cain_n jedas_n inlian_n and_o such_o other_o how_o soever_o you_o do_v judge_v yet_o sure_o i_o suppose_v and_o continuance_n unto_o the_o end_n be_v to_o deprive_v they_o of_o the_o special_a use_n of_o those_o promise_n of_o such_o blessedness_n in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o than_o what_o great_a comfort_n shall_v the_o faithful_a and_o regenerate_v find_v in_o those_o promise_n then_o the_o faithless_a and_o reprobate_a and_o further_a what_o benefit_n or_o comfort_n can_v grow_v to_o the_o
