uphold_v the_o credit_n of_o his_o brother_n that_o will_v acknowledge_v god_n grace_n in_o he_o in_o all_o place_n and_o at_o all_o time_n and_o will_v not_o rather_o with_o some_o one_o infirmity_n overwhelm_v whatsoever_o be_v prayse-worthie_a in_o he_o five_o observe_v god_n providence_n recompense_v doct._n 5_o faith_n with_o fame_n and_o good_a name_n when_o faith_n shall_v religion_n a_o the_o ancient_n be_v especial_o in_o their_o feast_n then_o may_v we_o look_v for_o god_n to_o come_v &_o drench_v we_o with_o the_o precious_a ointment_n of_o a_o good_a name_n when_o we_o be_v keep_v the_o feast_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n if_o we_o will_v serve_v god_n with_o a_o good_a conscience_n by_o faith_n purge_v from_o dead_a work_n than_o shall_v we_o find_v that_o god_n who_o see_v our_o faith_n and_o good_a conscience_n in_o secret_a will_v reward_v we_o with_o credit_n and_o estimation_n open_o thus_o much_o general_o concern_v the_o cause_n and_o matter_n of_o paul_n pray_v unto_o and_o praise_v god_n viz._n the_o hear_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o philemon_z now_o more_o particular_o let_v we_o consider_v what_o these_o grace_n be_v there_o be_v two_o set_v down_o here_o by_o name_n first_o the_o love_n second_o the_o faith_n of_o philemon_z both_o these_o grace_n be_v set_v forth_o by_o their_o object_n whereabout_o they_o be_v conversant_a which_o thou_o have_v towards_o our_o lord_n jesus_n and_o all_o saint_n both_o these_o object_n belong_v in_o common_a to_o love_n the_o former_a only_o to_o faith_n by_o faith_n only_o we_o apprehend_v christ_n and_o unite_v ourselves_o to_o he_o but_o by_o love_n we_o apprehend_v and_o unite_v ourselves_o both_o to_o christ_n and_o our_o fellow-member_n thus_o then_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n and_o thus_o they_o be_v to_o be_v construe_v hear_v of_o thy_o faith_n and_o love_n thy_o faith_n which_o thou_o have_v in_o our_o lord_n jesus_n and_o thy_o love_n which_o thou_o have_v both_o to_o our_o lord_n jesus_n and_o all_o saint_n the_o rhemist_n therefore_o err_v by_o this_o place_n confirm_v that_o confidence_n which_o they_o teach_v we_o to_o repose_v in_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o saint_n whereas_o it_o be_v manifest_a by_o the_o seven_o verse_n that_o the_o apostle_n speak_v not_o of_o the_o dead_a but_o of_o live_a saint_n here_o then_o two_o point_n special_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v first_o these_o two_o virtue_n love_n and_o faith_n second_o their_o object_n towards_o the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o all_o saint_n first_o for_o the_o virtue_n the_o first_o place_n be_v here_o give_v to_o love_n though_o both_o in_o nature_n and_o excellency_n it_o come_v behind_o faith_n as_o the_o effect_v the_o cause_n the_o daughter_n the_o mother_n gal._n 5._o 1._o tim._n 1._o 6._o therefore_o elsewhere_o faith_n be_v set_v before_o as_o coloss_n 1._o 6._o 1._o thessaly_n 1._o 3._o but_o nothing_o be_v more_o usual_a in_o the_o scripture_n then_o to_o give_v the_o former_a place_n unto_o the_o effect_n as_o be_v more_o obvious_a to_o our_o sense_n then_o the_o cause_n by_o faith_n understand_v justify_v faith_n which_o only_o be_v able_a to_o bring_v forth_o true_a love_n either_o to_o god_n or_o man_n and_o by_o love_n as_o the_o apostle_n show_v not_o only_o love_v to_o god_n but_o also_o to_o man_n here_o observe_v first_o the_o distinction_n of_o these_o grace_n of_o faith_n and_o doct._n 1_o love._n they_o be_v name_v distinct_o as_o two_o virtue_n 1._o cor._n 13._o in_o the_o end_n there_o remain_v these_o three_o faith_n hope_n and_o charity_n this_o observation_n will_v not_o seem_v idle_a if_o we_o consider_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o papist_n concern_v faith_n viz._n that_o there_o be_v a_o two_o fold_v faith_n one_o inform_v and_o a_o second_o form_v and_o that_o by_o charity_n they_o make_v charity_n the_o form_n the_o life_n and_o soul_n of_o faith_n which_o if_o it_o be_v so_o then_o faith_n and_o love_n be_v not_o to_o be_v distinguish_v but_o confound_v neither_o can_v the_o apostle_n say_v these_o three_o but_z these_z two_o remain_z neither_o can_v charity_n be_v prefer_v before_o faith_n in_o respect_n of_o long_a durance_n for_o the_o form_n of_o a_o thing_n be_v the_o thing_n itself_o and_o therefore_o as_o long_o as_o the_o form_n last_v so_o long_o the_o thing_n itself_o continue_v second_o the_o conjunction_n of_o these_o two_o grace_n doct._n 2_o for_o howsoever_o they_o be_v to_o be_v distinguish_v yet_o not_o divide_v faith_n and_o love_n be_v distinguish_v not_o divide_v to_o be_v other_o to_o deal_v with_o this_o so_o gainful_a a_o commodity_n they_o that_o be_v convert_v of_o god_n confirm_v their_o brethren_n be_v pass_v over_o the_o bridge_n they_o will_v wish_v other_o to_o follow_v they_o so_o far_o will_v they_o be_v from_o pluck_v up_o the_o bridge_n the_o same_o sentence_n also_o be_v to_o be_v pass_v upon_o they_o that_o do_v not_o feel_v their_o heart_n enlarge_v towards_o christian_n more_o than_o to_o other_o that_o be_v none_o if_o the_o image_n of_o god_n by_o faith_n be_v repair_v in_o ourselves_o we_o can_v not_o but_o be_v delight_v with_o those_o that_o be_v like_o ourselves_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a if_o thou_o feel_v these_o effect_n of_o love_n in_o thyself_o undoubted_o thou_o have_v faith_n for_o it_o be_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n only_o feel_v by_o faith_n which_o be_v able_a to_o soften_v and_o melt_v our_o hard_a and_o freeze_a heart_n when_o we_o shall_v see_v how_o great_a a_o debt_n he_o have_v forgive_v we_o this_o will_v make_v we_o willing_o to_o forgive_v small_a one_o to_o our_o brethren_n yea_o and_o to_o bury_v all_o injury_n in_o the_o grave_n of_o forgetfulness_n never_o to_o revive_v again_o even_o as_o christ_n have_v do_v all_o we_o to_o he_o though_o never_o so_o indignus_fw-fr and_o contumelious_a he_o lodge_v they_o in_o his_o own_o grave_n not_o to_o rise_v again_o with_o himself_o the_o three_o day_n though_o many_o of_o we_o raise_v up_o our_o own_o injury_n far_o soon_o out_o of_o their_o grave_n but_o to_o be_v leave_v behind_o he_o in_o that_o den_n of_o darkness_n to_o sleep_v a_o eternal_a sleep_n so_o when_o faith_n shall_v cause_v we_o to_o consider_v how_o that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n be_v rich_a become_v poor_a that_o we_o may_v be_v make_v rich_a this_o will_v make_v we_o to_o earn_v in_o the_o bowel_n of_o compassion_n towards_o our_o poor_a and_o distress_a brethren_n and_o to_o reach_v forth_o our_o relieve_v hand_n towards_o they_o but_o the_o most_o evident_a demonstration_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v that_o brotherly_a love_n wherewithal_o we_o love_v a_o christian_a as_o a_o christian_a and_o because_o a_o christian_n 1._o joh._n 3._o we_o know_v that_o we_o be_v translate_v from_o death_n to_o life_n because_o we_o love_v the_o brethren_n for_o none_o can_v love_v any_o good_a thing_n unknown_a love_n presuppose_v knowledge_n of_o the_o thing_n love_v he_o then_o that_o love_v the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o his_o brother_n see_v it_o but_o none_o can_v see_v it_o but_o by_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n he_o that_o love_v his_o brother_n for_o his_o faith_n must_v needs_o know_v faith_n but_o no_o man_n can_v know_v it_o but_o he_o that_o have_v it_o faith_n be_v only_o know_v by_o our_o own_o experience_n second_o this_o doctrine_n serve_v not_o only_o for_o the_o trial_n of_o our_o faith_n but_o also_o of_o our_o love_n to_o our_o brethren_n for_o as_o that_o faith_n which_o be_v without_o this_o love_n be_v a_o idle_a and_o empty_a and_o imaginary_a faith_n so_o that_o love_n of_o our_o neighbour_n which_o come_v not_o from_o faith_n be_v blind_a and_o foolish_a and_o in_o the_o end_n will_v prove_v a_o deceitful_a and_o unfaithful_a love_n natural_a man_n that_o seem_v to_o love_v very_o dear_o to_o day_n to_o morrow_n be_v at_o deadly_a feud_n the_o reason_n hereof_o be_v because_o their_o love_n come_v not_o from_o faith_n therefore_o among_o the_o true_a child_n of_o god_n you_o shall_v never_o see_v such_o bitter_a fall_n out_o as_o among_o worldly_a man_n in_o natural_a man_n and_o the_o unregenerate_a learn_v the_o manner_n wherein_o every_o good_a work_n must_v be_v do_v namely_o in_o faith_n and_o love._n the_o very_a spirit_n and_o quintessence_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o love_n must_v be_v in_o withal_o let_v we_o here_o learn_v how_o to_o minister_v occasion_n of_o joy_n to_o those_o that_o desire_v to_o have_v joy_n of_o we_o as_o our_o parent_n minister_n acquaintance_n etc._n etc._n will_v as_o well_o rejoice_v in_o that_o love_n which_o be_v profitable_a only_o to_o other_o it_o be_v plain_a then_o that_o we_o rejoice_v not_o so_o much_o in_o love_n because_o it_o be_v love_n
