love_n into_o their_o heart_n that_o they_o can_v extend_v it_o again_o throughout_o the_o whole_a world_n and_o be_v merciful_a as_o their_o heavenly_a father_n be_v merciful_a even_o in_o that_o great_a instance_n of_o make_v as_o instrument_n the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n to_o shine_v and_o the_o dew_n of_o heaven_n to_o fall_v upon_o the_o just_a and_o the_o unjust_a and_o by_o their_o compassionate_a desire_n and_o faithful_a prayer_n their_o tender_a mercy_n be_v over_o all_o the_o work_n of_o god_n how_o glad_o can_v i_o cast_v myself_o into_o this_o ocean_n as_o aristotle_n to_o euripus_n and_o say_v quoniam_fw-la ego_fw-la non_fw-la comprehendam_fw-la te_fw-la tu_fw-la comprehende_v i_o because_o i_o can_v comprehend_v thy_o mercy_n lord_n let_v i_o be_v comprehend_v of_o they_o but_o as_o every_o dust_n of_o gold_n be_v gold_n so_o every_o act_n of_o mercy_n be_v precious_a and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o mention_v the_o infinite_a perfection_n of_o divine_a mercy_n nor_o those_o heroic_a deed_n of_o merciful_a man_n who_o love_n have_v be_v more_o strong_a than_o death_n but_o confine_v myself_o within_o those_o ordinary_a bound_n of_o charity_n of_o salt_n to_o the_o sacrifice_n make_v it_o corrupt_v and_o become_v unsavoury_a every_o malicious_a thought_n will_v be_v as_o so_o much_o fire_n to_o make_v they_o evaporate_v into_o smoke_n so_o the_o apostle_n assure_v we_o 13._o 1_o cor._n 13._o though_o i_o speak_v with_o the_o tongue_n of_o man_n and_o angel_n though_o i_o have_v the_o gift_n of_o prophecy_n and_o understand_v all_o mystery_n and_o knowledge_n and_o have_v all_o faith_n and_o have_v not_o charity_n it_o profit_v i_o nothing_o the_o bare_a omission_n of_o the_o mean_a act_n of_o charity_n such_o as_o our_o saviour_n mention_v matthew_n 25.25_o be_v sufficient_a to_o exclude_v our_o soul_n as_o well_o as_o our_o service_n from_o heaven_n the_o pharisee_n then_o have_v little_a reason_n to_o insist_v so_o exact_o on_o a_o levitical_a ceremony_n of_o touch_v and_o accompany_v with_o unclean_a person_n when_o they_o admit_v that_o pride_n and_o contempt_n of_o their_o brethren_n that_o envy_n against_o christ_n which_o render_v they_o by_o far_o the_o more_o unclean_a a_o principle_n which_o have_v much_o trouble_v the_o church_n of_o god_n in_o all_o age_n when_o pharisaical_a man_n first_o censure_n and_o condemn_v their_o brethren_n and_o then_o separate_v from_o they_o and_o grow_v in_o hatred_n against_o they_o when_o they_o have_v no_o other_o reason_n to_o think_v ill_o of_o their_o brethren_n but_o because_o they_o think_v too_o well_o of_o themselves_o and_o by_o their_o zeal_n for_o the_o external_o of_o religion_n seek_v to_o palliate_v their_o neglect_n of_o the_o most_o essential_a duty_n to_o these_o our_o saviour_n commend_v the_o lesson_n in_o the_o text_n as_o well_o as_o to_o those_o ancient_a pharisee_n go_v learn_v what_o that_o mean_v etc._n etc._n have_v endeavour_v to_o convince_v your_o understanding_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o proposition_n in_o general_n i_o shall_v apply_v it_o as_o effectual_o as_o i_o can_v for_o the_o cure_n of_o our_o present_a distemper_n for_o we_o also_o do_v trouble_v ourselves_o and_o other_o about_o many-inconsiderable_a circumstance_n of_o external_a worship_n to_o the_o neglect_n of_o those_o moral_a duty_n of_o humility_n charity_n and_o peace_n which_o be_v of_o the_o very_a essence_n of_o religion_n and_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o if_o we_o will_v lay_v aside_o our_o pride_n prejudice_n and_o carnal_a interest_n and_o as_o newborn_a babe_n desire_v the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n that_o we_o may_v grow_v thereby_o this_o plain_a lesson_n of_o our_o saviour_n touch_v the_o love_n of_o mercy_n will_v more_o edify_v
