sweet_a it_o be_v be_v overcome_v it_o be_v a_o sweet_a thing_n to_o overcome_v it_o be_v hard_a thing_n to_o fight_v but_o it_o be_v a_o sweet_a thing_n to_o overcome_v the_o hard_a the_o nutt_n be_v thing_n to_o meditate_v on_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n yet_o notwithstanding_o do_v but_o consider_v why_o the_o woâ—k_n be_v hard_a and_o you_o will_v say_v that_o the_o difficulty_n of_o the_o work_n be_v no_o impeachment_n to_o the_o suavity_n or_o the_o sweetness_n thereof_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n that_o make_v meditation_n hard_o the_o one_o be_v because_o man_n be_v not_o first_o paint_v hard_o at_o the_o first_o and_o the_o get_n language_n hard_o at_o the_o first_o a_o trade_n be_v hard_a at_o the_o first_o so_o certain_o the_o work_n of_o meditation_n will_v be_v hard_a at_o the_o first_o there_o be_v nothing_o not_o hard_a to_o those_o that_o be_v unwilling_a there_o be_v nothing_o hard_a to_o those_o that_o love_n love_n make_v all_o thing_n easy_a be_v it_o a_o hard_a thing_n for_o a_o lover_n to_o think_v or_o meditate_v on_o the_o person_n love_v be_v it_o a_o hard_a thing_n for_o a_o child_n at_o a_o distance_n from_o his_o father_n to_o think_v or_o meditate_v on_o his_o father_n and_o his_o father_n love_n and_o kindness_n be_v this_o hard_a indeed_o to_o a_o rebellious_a child_n it_o be_v hard_a to_o a_o child_n that_o be_v run_v away_o from_o his_o father_n it_o be_v hard_a but_o for_o a_o love_a and_o a_o obedient_a child_n it_o be_v not_o hard_a and_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o the_o work_n of_o meditation_n be_v so_o hard_a to_o many_o of_o we_o but_o because_o in_o truth_n we_o be_v not_o use_v thereunto_o or_o because_o we_o be_v rebellious_a child_n and_o do_v it_o love_v the_o lord_n as_o we_o ought_v to_o do_v quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v may_v not_o a_o wicked_a man_n meditate_v on_o god_n and_o find_v sweetness_n in_o the_o work_n answ_n i_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v separate_v and_o sequester_v himself_o unto_o this_o work_n of_o read_v studying_z and_o think_v on_o the_o word_n and_o law_n of_o god_n 1_o sam._n 21.7_o now_o a_o certain_a man_n of_o the_o servant_n of_o saul_n be_v there_o that_o day_n detain_v before_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o name_n be_v doeg_n he_o be_v there_o separated_z cloister_v for_o the_o study_v of_o the_o law_n and_o yet_o a_o doeg_n a_o great_a persecuter_n and_o who_o do_v not_o see_v it_o friar_n and_o monk_n separate_v and_o cloister_n up_o themselves_o at_o this_o very_a day_n and_o spend_v much_o time_n in_o that_o which_o they_o call_v meditation_n yea_o possible_a it_o be_v that_o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v not_o only_o think_v and_o meditate_v on_o the_o law_n of_o god_n but_o he_o may_v find_v some_o sweetness_n therein_o for_o if_o wicked_a man_n do_v delight_n in_o their_o approach_n unto_o god_n as_o in_o the_o 58._o of_o isaiah_n why_o may_v they_o not_o delight_v also_o and_o find_v a_o sweetness_n in_o their_o meditation_n concern_v god_n but_o three_o though_o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v meditate_v on_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o find_v some_o sweetness_n in_o the_o work_n of_o meditation_n yet_o with_o this_o difference_n there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n between_o the_o sweetness_n that_o a_o wicked_a man_n find_v in_o the_o work_n of_o meditation_n and_o the_o sweetness_n that_o a_o good_a man_n find_v in_o the_o work_n of_o meditation_n for_o though_o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v meditate_v and_o find_v some_o sweetness_n in_o the_o work_n yet_o not_o withstand_v the_o sweetness_n do_v rather_o arise_v from_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o his_o natural_a conscience_n than_o from_o the_o connaturalness_n and_o suitableness_n that_o be_v between_o his_o heart_n and_o the_o work_n possible_o a_o doeg_n a_o wicked_a man_n may_v be_v convince_v that_o he_o ought_v to_o read_v the_o scripture_n and_o to_o meditate_v therein_o and_o have_v do_v so_o his_o conscience_n be_v satisfy_v and_o he_o find_v sweetness_n therein_o but_o â—his_v sweetness_n do_v rather_o arise_v from_o the_o satisfy_n of_o his_o natural_a conscience_n than_o from_o any_o connaturalnesse_n and_o suitablenesse_n that_o there_o be_v between_o his_o heart_n and_o the_o work_n 2._o it_o be_v one_o thing_n for_o a_o man_n to_o find_v a_o sweetness_n in_o this_o work_n of_o meditation_n in_o reference_n to_o his_o own_o employment_n call_v or_o livelihood_n another_o thing_n for_o to_o find_v a_o sweetness_n in_o it_o in_o reference_n unto_o god_n to_o his_o
and_o the_o more_o sensible_a we_o be_v of_o the_o loss_n of_o our_o thought-pâ—ssessions_a and_o of_o our_o meditation_n the_o more_o fit_a we_o shall_v be_v for_o this_o work_n of_o meditation_n first_o therefore_o be_v very_o sensible_a of_o your_o want_n and_o neglect_v of_o this_o work_n of_o meditation_n thus_o long_o 2._o if_o you_o will_v meditate_v indeed_o on_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n labour_v more_o and_o more_o for_o a_o serious_a spirit_n a_o frothy_a leight_n and_o giggle_a disposition_n be_v never_o fit_a for_o meditation_n labour_v therefore_o to_o be_v serious_a and_o there_o be_v three_o or_o four_o thing_n that_o will_v poise_v and_o make_v your_o heart_n serious_a the_o sight_n of_o the_o glorious_a majesty_n of_o god_n the_o sense_n of_o your_o great_a friend_n to_o meditation_n a_o unsettled_a a_o unfixed_a soul_n can_v meditate_v fix_v therefore_o first_o and_o there_o be_v many_o thing_n that_o may_v fix_v your_o spirit_n the_o great_a and_o weighty_a judgement_n of_o god_n that_o be_v upon_o we_o may_v help_v to_o fix_v we_o and_o hang_v lead_v upon_o our_o heel_n in_o case_n you_o be_v to_o come_v to_o meditation_n or_o any_o other_o work_n come_v free_a and_o do_v it_o leave_v any_o business_n stand_v at_o the_o door_n for_o a_o hundred_o to_o one_o but_o your_o heart_n will_v step_v out_o unto_o it_o at_o the_o time_n of_o your_o work_n whether_o meditation_n or_o prayer_n or_o any_o thing_n else_o therefore_o come_v free_a unto_o every_o duty_n if_o you_o will_v be_v fix_v and_o labour_n for_o intention_n of_o affection_n in_o meditation_n prayer_n or_o any_o other_o work_n be_v intense_a we_o use_v to_o say_v when_o the_o candle_n burn_v the_o mouse_n do_v not_o nibble_n but_o when_o the_o candle_n be_v out_o than_o the_o mouse_n nibble_v when_o our_o heart_n be_v warm_a and_o lively_a in_o prayer_n and_o meditation_n we_o be_v free_a from_o distraction_n the_o mouse_n nibble_v not_o and_o in_o case_n you_o meet_v with_o any_o distraction_n in_o meditation_n or_o other_o duty_n do_v stand_v to_o correct_v your_o heart_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o duty_n but_o go_v on_o with_o your_o work_n if_o a_o woman_n carry_v a_o child_n abroad_o among_o friend_n and_o the_o child_n cry_v and_o make_v a_o disturbance_n the_o mother_n do_v then_o correct_v the_o child_n there_o but_o call_v the_o child_n to_o a_o account_n when_o she_o come_v at_o home_n for_o say_v she_o else_o will_v my_o correction_n be_v a_o further_a disturbance_n to_o the_o company_n so_o here_o when_o you_o meet_v with_o distraction_n in_o duty_n if_o you_o call_v your_o heart_n to_o a_o account_n then_o it_o will_v be_v a_o further_a disturbance_n but_o on_o with_o your_o present_a duty_n correct_v afterward_o and_o thus_o shall_v your_o heart_n be_v the_o more_o fix_v and_o fixation_n of_o heart_n be_v a_o great_a help_n to_o meditation_n 4._o if_o you_o will_v indeed_o meditate_v on_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n be_v sure_a that_o you_o lay_v out_o such_o object_n as_o may_v give_v entertainment_n to_o your_o thought_n for_o if_o there_o be_v no_o corn_n in_o the_o quern_n what_o grind_v will_v there_o be_v have_v therefore_o object_n lay_v out_o to_o exercise_v your_o thought_n withal_o upon_o all_o occasion_n and_o so_o when_o you_o have_v any_o spare_a time_n your_o object_n lie_v by_o you_o will_v be_v present_o upon_o the_o work_n of_o meditation_n only_o let_v those_o object_n be_v such_o as_o be_v draw_v allure_a thought-begetting_a object_n and_o thought-entertaining_a object_n but_o then_o 5._o if_o you_o will_v meditate_v on_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n strengthen_v your_o love_n and_o delight_n for_o meditation_n grow_v upon_o the_o stalk_n of_o love_n and_o delight_n and_o the_o more_o a_o man_n do_v love_n god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n the_o more_o he_o meditate_v thereon_o psal_n 119._o o_o how_o i_o love_v thy_o law_n what_o then_o it_o be_v my_o meditation_n all_o the_o day_n this_o be_v much_o his_o meditation_n all_o the_o day_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o his_o love_n be_v beyond_o expression_n o_o how_o i_o love_v thy_o because_o she_o love_v it_o can_v a_o worldly_a man_n forget_v the_o world_n his_o money_n and_o his_o house_n or_o land_n can_v he_o forget_v this_o no_o why_o because_o he_o love_v they_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n we_o meditate_v no_o more_o but_o because_o we_o love_v god_n no_o more_o do_v but_o strengthen_v your_o love_n to_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o your_o delight_n in_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o you_o will_v meditate_v more_o this_o be_v the_o five_o mean_n unto_o the_o work_n of_o meditation_n strengthen_v your_o love_n to_o and_o your_o delight_n in_o the_o lord_n and_o then_o 6._o if_o you_o will_v meditate_v on_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n then_o labour_v to_o get_v a_o deep_a impression_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n upon_o your_o heart_n and_o soul_n it_o be_v deep_a impression_n that_o call_v for_o meditation_n a_o man_n read_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o it_o may_v be_v understand_v it_o but_o he_o do_v and_o he_o meditate_v not_o thereupon_o why_o why_o because_o it_o have_v no_o impression_n upon_o he_o possible_o a_o man_n may_v think_v of_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n yet_o if_o it_o make_v no_o impression_n upon_o his_o soul_n he_o do_v go_v away_o and_o meditate_v on_o it_o if_o a_o man_n think_v on_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o it_o make_v a_o impression_n upon_o he_o he_o go_v away_o and_o be_v still_o in_o the_o thought_n thereof_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o many_o poor_a soul_n trouble_v in_o conscience_n be_v always_o think_v of_o hell_n and_o judgement_n and_o wrath_n but_o because_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n have_v make_v a_o deep_a impression_n upon_o their_o soul_n and_o the_o more_o deep_a the_o impression_n be_v upon_o your_o soul_n the_o more_o full_a will_v your_o meditation_n be_v you_o see_v how_o it_o be_v in_o former_a time_n when_o they_o go_v in_o procession_n at_o the_o end_n of_o the_o parish_n they_o will_v take_v up_o a_o boy_n and_o whip_v he_o why_o that_o he_o may_v remember_v the_o bound_n of_o the_o parish_n for_o passion_n be_v the_o best_a doorkeeper_n of_o memory_n and_o as_o passion_n be_v the_o doorkeeper_n of_o memory_n so_o impression_n be_v the_o doorkeeper_n of_o meditation_n 7._o if_o you_o will_v meditate_v on_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n take_v heed_n that_o your_o heart_n and_o your_o hand_n be_v not_o too_o full_a of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o employment_n thereof_o the_o more_o full_a your_o hand_n be_v of_o worldly_a employment_n the_o more_o you_o will_v think_v thereon_o and_o the_o more_o you_o think_v thereon_o the_o less_o you_o will_v think_v of_o gâ—d_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o many_o meditate_v and_o think_v so_o little_a of_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n but_o because_o their_o heart_n be_v so_o full_a of_o the_o world_n where_o their_o treasure_n be_v there_o will_v their_o heart_n bâ—_n o_o say_v one_o i_o will_v iv_o now_o four_o why_o will_v god_n carry_v on_o the_o work_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o a_o way_n of_o prevent_v love_n 1._o first_o because_o the_o heart_n of_o god_n be_v full_a of_o love_n to_o the_o child_n of_o man_n ordinary_a love_n will_v show_v kindness_n upon_o kindness_n but_o where_o the_o heart_n be_v full_a of_o love_n it_o delight_v to_o prevent_v the_o person_n love_v with_o kindness_n now_o the_o heart_n of_o god_n be_v full_a of_o love_n for_o the_o child_n of_o man_n that_o be_v one_o thing_n 2._o god_n will_v so_o carry_v on_o the_o work_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o mercy_n that_o all_o his_o mercy_n and_o blessing_n now_o may_v be_v conform_v to_o the_o womb_n that_o bear_v they_o the_o child_n follow_v the_o womb_n that_o bear_v it_o the_o first_o in_o every_o blessing_n may_v be_v conform_v to_o their_o first_o original_a election_n and_o there_o prevent_a mercy_n be_v very_o sweet_a 3._o but_o three_o god_n will_v so_o carry_v on_o the_o work_n of_o his_o mercy_n as_o it_o may_v be_v most_o take_v and_o effective_a upon_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o child_n of_o man_n and_o what_o be_v more_o take_v then_o prevent_v love_n what_o more_o operative_a what_o more_o powerful_a what_o more_o take_a i_o say_v you_o know_v the_o parable_n some_o be_v invite_v to_o the_o supper_n and_o some_o not_o invite_v some_o come_v and_o some_o come_v not_o who_o be_v those_o that_o come_v who_o be_v those_o that_o come_v not_o those_o that_o come_v not_o be_v such_o as_o be_v invite_v those_o that_o come_v be_v such_o as_o be_v in_o the_o lane_n highway_n and_o hedge_n compel_v to_o come_v in_o ay_o prevent_v love_n be_v the_o most_o take_v now_o god_n will_v so_o carry_v on_o the_o work_n of_o his_o mercy_n as_o it_o may_v be_v most_o take_v and_o most_o effective_a upon_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o child_n of_o man_n 4._o again_o god_n will_v so_o carry_v on_o his_o mercy_n as_o that_o it_o may_v be_v hold_v and_o sure_a the_o more_o any_o mercy_n be_v lay_v upon_o that_o which_o be_v in_o god_n himself_o and_o the_o less_o lay_v upon_o that_o which_o be_v in_o we_o the_o more_o hold_v and_o sure_a it_o be_v now_o mercy_n lay_v upon_o grace_n be_v they_o and_o speak_v against_o they_o but_o then_o before_o i_o be_v aware_a i_o know_v not_o how_o god_n do_v reveal_v himself_o and_o his_o way_n to_o i_o oh_o now_o what_o shall_v i_o do_v for_o god_n i_o will_v spend_v and_o be_v spend_v for_o god_n any_o thing_n for_o christ_n who_o have_v thus_o overcome_v i_o with_o his_o prevent_a love_n of_o all_o those_o that_o be_v call_v the_o ancient_n austin_n do_v most_o magnify_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n bradwardin_n call_v he_o the_o son_n of_o grace_n and_o of_o all_o in_o those_o day_n none_o that_o we_o read_v of_o taste_v so_o much_o of_o the_o prevent_a mercy_n of_o god_n as_o he_o when_o he_o be_v young_a he_o pray_v for_o the_o mortification_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o yet_o he_o confess_v that_o he_o secret_o desire_v prevent_a love_n that_o no_o flesh_n may_v glory_v in_o itself_o 7._o god_n will_v so_o carry_v on_o the_o work_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n and_o of_o his_o grace_n that_o man_n may_v be_v make_v most_o gracious_a and_o in_o case_n they_o sin_n against_o he_o they_o may_v be_v reduce_v to_o true_a repentance_n what_o be_v there_o in_o all_o the_o world_n will_v make_v one_o so_o gracious_a as_o a_o sight_n of_o grace_n and_o what_o give_v one_o a_o great_a sight_n of_o grace_n then_o prevent_v love_n and_o what_o be_v there_o in_o all_o the_o world_n that_o will_v reduce_v
