have_v more_o mean_n and_o opportunity_n than_o other_o and_o some_o have_v great_a part_n and_o ability_n than_o other_o now_o god_n be_v not_o a_o severe_a master_n expect_v to_o reap_v where_o he_o have_v not_o sow_o or_o to_o gather_v where_o he_o have_v not_o strew_v god_n do_v not_o look_v for_o what_o he_o do_v not_o give_v where_o he_o give_v more_o he_o expect_v the_o more_o but_o where_o he_o give_v less_o he_o expect_v the_o less_o christian_n to_o who_o god_n have_v give_v great_a part_n and_o ability_n with_o great_a mean_n and_o opportunity_n of_o grace_n even_o unto_o old_a age_n from_o such_o god_n expect_v much_o because_o he_o have_v give_v much_o ordinary_a degree_n of_o grace_n must_v not_o serve_v their_o turn_n but_o they_o must_v transcend_v other_o in_o faith_n love_n humility_n and_o all_o other_o grace_n contend_v for_o the_o attain_n unto_o the_o state_n of_o the_o resurrection_n from_o the_o dead_a but_o now_o for_o other_o who_o part_n have_v be_v low_a who_o mean_n and_o opportunity_n be_v small_a and_o their_o time_n in_o the_o world_n but_o short_a god_n do_v not_o expect_v that_o the_o beauty_n of_o their_o grace_n shall_v shine_v so_o glorious_o as_o other_o say_v not_o therefore_o nor_o doubt_v christian_a that_o thou_o know_v not_o believe_v not_o love_v not_o delight_v not_o in_o god_n to_o that_o degree_n that_o other_o do_v it_o may_v be_v thou_o do_v not_o but_o if_o thy_o knowledge_n faith_n love_n and_o delight_n be_v not_o so_o great_a as_o other_o yet_o thy_o grace_n may_v be_v as_o true_a and_o as_o real_a as_o any_o other_o in_o a_o star_n there_o be_v as_o true_a light_n as_o in_o the_o sun_n though_o there_o be_v more_o light_n in_o the_o sun_n and_o thy_o grace_n though_o little_a and_o weak_a be_v true_a grace_n though_o it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o nor_o so_o strong_a as_o other_o quiet_v thyself_o therefore_o o_o droop_a soul_n for_o such_o may_v be_v the_o weakness_n of_o thy_o part_n such_o the_o smallness_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n that_o thou_o enjoy_v and_o so_o few_o the_o talent_n thou_o be_v entrust_v withal_o that_o god_n expect_v not_o so_o much_o from_o thou_o as_o he_o do_v from_o other_o and_o if_o the_o great_a god_n will_v accept_v of_o yea_o reward_v the_o little_a that_o thou_o have_v why_o shall_v thou_o be_v trouble_v or_o disquiet_v god_n do_v not_o despise_v the_o day_n of_o small_a thing_n and_o why_o shall_v thou_o a_o little_a grace_n yea_o the_o least_o of_o grace_n be_v too_o good_a to_o be_v cast_v away_o though_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v save_v without_o a_o strong_a saviour_n and_o therefore_o christ_n be_v say_v to_o travail_v in_o the_o greatness_n of_o his_o strength_n mighty_a to_o save_o yet_o a_o little_a faith_n lay_v hold_n upon_o this_o strong_a saviour_n will_v keep_v thou_o from_o perish_v be_v not_o therefore_o discourage_v o_o christian_n fear_v not_o death_n though_o thy_o grace_n be_v weak_a and_o imperfect_a and_o so_o may_v not_o give_v thou_o that_o comfort_n in_o death_n that_o thou_o expect_v yet_o shall_v it_o as_o true_o overcome_v death_n through_o the_o strength_n of_o christ_n as_o the_o strong_a grace_n and_o though_o death_n kill_v thou_o yet_o it_o shall_v not_o hurt_v thou_o nay_o it_o shall_v make_v for_o thy_o eternal_a advantage_n for_o it_o shall_v be_v the_o end_n of_o all_o thy_o fear_n but_o the_o begin_n of_o thy_o eternal_a joy_n and_o rejoice_n but_o may_v some_o poor_a soul_n say_v i_o want_v the_o assurance_n of_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o this_o make_v i_o unwilling_a to_o die_v be_v i_o but_o assure_v my_o sin_n be_v pardon_v and_o god_n reconcile_v to_o my_o soul_n through_o jesus_n christ_n i_o can_v then_o cheerful_o submit_v myself_o to_o the_o stroke_n of_o death_n but_o this_o be_v that_o which_o afrighten_v i_o i_o fear_v lest_o god_n be_v my_o enemy_n and_o then_o i_o be_o sure_a death_n can_v be_v my_o friend_n and_o how_o then_o shall_v i_o dare_v to_o think_v of_o die_v in_o this_o condition_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v be_v thou_o under_o some_o fear_n and_o apprehension_n that_o god_n be_v not_o thy_o reconcile_a father_n in_o jesus_n christ_n though_o i_o can_v blame_v thou_o that_o thou_o be_v fearful_a of_o die_v under_o such_o apprehension_n yet_o i_o must_v blame_v thou_o for_o thy_o former_a negligence_n that_o thou_o have_v not_o make_v this_o sure_a to_o thyself_o in_o the_o time_n of_o thy_o health_n and_o strength_n next_o to_o die_v in_o a_o state_n of_o impenitency_n and_o the_o horror_n of_o conscience_n under_o the_o fore_n taste_v of_o hell_n and_o wrath_n die_v under_o the_o apprehension_n and_o fear_n of_o god_n be_v our_o enemy_n be_v the_o most_o dreadful_a condition_n that_o can_v be_v for_o though_o our_o future_a safety_n and_o happiness_n depend_v not_o upon_o our_o assurance_n that_o god_n be_v at_o peace_n with_o we_o yet_o our_o present_a comfort_n do_v and_o it_o be_v all_o one_o as_o to_o the_o present_a quietation_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o our_o soul_n when_o we_o be_v a_o die_a whether_o god_n be_v our_o enemy_n or_o no_o if_o he_o will_v not_o smile_v upon_o we_o when_o our_o soul_n of_o heaven_n yea_o it_o be_v heaven_n itself_o for_o it_o be_v as_o much_o of_o heaven_n as_o we_o can_v desire_v or_o contain_v of_o heaven_n whilst_o we_o be_v on_o this_o side_n heaven_n on_o the_o contrary_a to_o be_v doubt_v of_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n to_o fear_v he_o be_v our_o enemy_n that_o we_o be_v yet_o in_o our_o sin_n liable_a unto_o the_o wrath_n and_o vengeance_n of_o god_n this_o be_v very_o sad_a and_o uncomfortable_a yea_o some_o resemblance_n of_o hell_n itself_o especial_o if_o conscience_n be_v awake_v and_o these_o apprehension_n and_o jealousy_n continue_v upon_o we_o under_o the_o approach_n of_o death_n this_o therefore_o must_v needs_o be_v very_o afflictive_a to_o a_o poor_a doubt_v soul_n but_o yet_o be_v not_o discourage_v for_o it_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o many_o of_o god_n child_n for_o a_o long_a time_n to_o remain_v doubtful_a both_o as_o to_o their_o present_a state_n in_o grace_n and_o their_o future_a state_n of_o glory_n there_o be_v believer_n of_o divers_a growth_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n father_n youngman_n child_n and_o babe_n and_o as_o it_o be_v in_o most_o family_n in_o the_o world_n there_o be_v more_o babe_n and_o child_n than_o grow_v man_n so_o be_v it_o in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n there_o be_v more_o weak_a and_o doubt_a christian_n than_o strong_a man_n who_o be_v grow_v up_o unto_o a_o full_a assurance_n but_o remember_v the_o promise_n be_v make_v to_o the_o be_v of_o faith_n not_o to_o the_o knowledge_n and_o evidence_n of_o it_o to_o faith_n as_o it_o be_v a_o true_a faith_n not_o to_o faith_n as_o it_o be_v a_o strong_a faith_n heaven_n may_v be_v sure_a to_o those_o who_o yet_o in_o their_o own_o apprehension_n may_v not_o be_v assure_v of_o heaven_n live_v therefore_o by_o faith_n o_o christian_n when_o thou_o can_v not_o live_v by_o sense_n and_o feel_v and_o know_v that_o that_o god_n who_o have_v give_v thou_o a_o true_a judgement_n to_o value_n jesus_n christ_n and_o a_o sanctify_a will_n to_o choose_v he_o with_o ardent_a and_o strong_a affection_n to_o love_v he_o and_o desire_v he_o and_o support_v thou_o under_o the_o fear_n of_o sin_n and_o guilt_n will_v come_v in_o with_o assurance_n also_o if_o he_o see_v it_o good_a for_o thou_o and_o know_v also_o for_o thy_o
whether_o it_o be_v good_a or_o evil_n but_o because_o general_n do_v not_o so_o much_o affect_v we_o unto_o our_o edification_n i_o shall_v be_v a_o little_a more_o particular_a in_o my_o discourse_n upon_o this_o subject_a and_o so_o i_o shall_v speak_v something_o concern_v death_n in_o a_o threefold_a sense_n as_o the_o scripture_n hold_v it_o forth_o unto_o we_o and_o so_o there_o be_v i._o a_o death_n in_o sin_n ii_o a_o death_n to_o sin_n and_o iii_o a_o death_n for_o sin_n first_o there_o be_v a_o death_n in_o sin_n this_o the_o scripture_n mention_n often_o 5_o john_n 25._o the_o hour_n be_v come_v and_o now_o be_v when_o the_o dead_a shall_v hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o they_o that_o hear_v shall_v live_v so_o 5_o ephes_n 14._o awake_v thou_o that_o sleep_v and_o stand_v up_o from_o the_o dead_a and_o christ_n shall_v give_v thou_o light_n so_o let_v the_o dead_a bury_v the_o dead_a mat._n 8.22_o this_o death_n in_o sin_n consist_v in_o the_o want_n of_o a_o principle_n of_o spiritual_a life_n be_v the_o deprivation_n of_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n which_o be_v the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o without_o which_o the_o soul_n be_v dead_a and_o thus_o all_o man_n natural_o be_v dead_a because_o they_o be_v without_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n which_o enlivens_fw-la and_o quicken_v the_o soul_n to_o all_o act_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n wherein_o this_o spiritual_a life_n do_v manifest_v itself_o as_o the_o soul_n enlivens_fw-la and_o quicken_v the_o body_n unto_o all_o act_n of_o nature_n wherein_o the_o natural_a life_n do_v manifest_v itself_o that_o all_o man_n be_v thus_o dead_a in_o sin_n natural_o be_v evident_a from_o scripture_n 2_o ephes_n 1_o 2_o 3._o the_o apostle_n write_v to_o the_o ephesian_n who_o by_o the_o almighty_a power_n of_o god_n be_v raise_v from_o this_o spiritual_a death_n as_o he_o tell_v they_o in_o the_o first_o verse_n and_o you_o have_v he_o quicken_v who_o be_v dead_a in_o trespass_n and_o sin_n that_o he_o may_v beget_v in_o they_o a_o grateful_a sense_n of_o god_n goodness_n towards_o they_o herein_o he_o describe_v to_o they_o their_o former_a deplorable_a condition_n wherein_o say_v he_o in_o time_n past_a you_o walk_v according_a to_o the_o course_n of_o the_o world_n according_a to_o the_o prince_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o air_n the_o spirit_n that_o work_v in_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n and_o in_o ver._n 3._o the_o apostle_n put_v himself_o into_o the_o number_n among_o who_o say_v he_o we_o all_o have_v our_o conversation_n in_o time_n past_a in_o the_o lust_n of_o our_o flesh_n fulfil_v the_o desire_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o of_o the_o mind_n and_o be_v by_o nature_n child_n of_o wrath_n even_o as_o other_o and_o then_o in_o the_o four_o verse_n he_o give_v they_o to_o understand_v by_o who_o they_o be_v raise_v out_o of_o so_o miserable_a a_o estate_n but_o god_n say_v he_o who_o be_v rich_a in_o mercy_n for_o his_o great_a love_n wherewith_o he_o love_v we_o even_o when_o we_o be_v dead_a in_o sin_n have_v quicken_v we_o together_o with_o christ_n by_o grace_n you_o be_v save_v now_o this_o spiritual_a death_n or_o this_o death_n in_o sin_n be_v the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o our_o first_o parent_n apostasy_n from_o god_n whereby_o we_o be_v not_o only_o deprive_v of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o beauty_n yea_o the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o be_v also_o deprave_v with_o the_o image_n of_o the_o devil_n which_o be_v not_o only_o the_o deformity_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o even_o as_o death_n unto_o it_o and_o because_o this_o be_v a_o spiritual_a death_n and_o reach_v chief_o to_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v therefore_o the_o more_o hurtful_a and_o dangerous_a though_o the_o effect_n of_o it_o extend_v itself_o to_o the_o body_n also_o be_v that_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o natural_a death_n for_o therefore_o the_o body_n be_v a_o frail_a die_a body_n because_o it_o be_v join_v to_o a_o sinful_a soul_n but_o this_o be_v not_o all_o the_o mischief_n it_o do_v for_o this_o death_n in_o sin_n unless_o grace_n prevent_v be_v that_o which_o end_v in_o eternal_a death_n which_o consist_v in_o a_o everlasting_a separation_n of_o soul_n and_o body_n from_o the_o eternal_a enjoyment_n of_o god_n in_o heaven_n in_o who_o presence_n there_o be_v fullness_n of_o joy_n and_o at_o who_o right_a hand_n there_o be_v pleasure_n for_o evermore_o second_o there_o be_v a_o death_n to_o sin_n of_o this_o we_o read_v rom._n 6.2_o how_o shall_v we_o that_o be_v dead_a to_o sin_n live_v any_o long_a therein_o so_o in_o 1_o pet._n 2.24_o that_o we_o be_v dead_a to_o sin_n shall_v not_o live_v any_o long_a therein_o this_o death_n to_o sin_n consist_v in_o the_o spirit_n indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n by_o its_o sanctify_a operation_n enable_v the_o soul_n to_o mortify_v sin_n hence_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o rom._n 8.13_o that_o if_o through_o the_o spirit_n we_o mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n we_o shall_v live_v such_o therefore_o who_o have_v feel_v the_o efficacy_n of_o a_o almighty_a power_n from_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n by_o the_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n apply_v of_o it_o to_o their_o soul_n to_o break_v the_o power_n and_o strength_n of_o sin_n so_o that_o it_o do_v not_o reign_v in_o they_o they_o may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v dead_a to_o sin_n because_o sin_n be_v die_v in_o they_o as_o those_o person_n over_o who_o distemper_n have_v prevail_v so_o far_o that_o they_o have_v lose_v their_o bodily_a strength_n that_o it_o can_v be_v recover_v again_o be_v say_v to_o be_v dead_a even_o while_o they_o live_v so_o though_o sin_n still_o live_v in_o the_o godly_a by_o reason_n of_o the_o remainder_n of_o it_o yet_o be_v they_o dead_a to_o sin_n because_o the_o power_n and_o strength_n of_o it_o be_v abate_v and_o lessen_v the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n prevail_v daily_o over_o sin_n so_o that_o it_o do_v not_o rule_n and_o reign_v as_o former_o it_o do_v thus_o to_o die_v to_o sin_n be_v to_o be_v make_v alive_a to_o god_n and_o bless_v be_v they_o that_o have_v a_o part_n in_o this_o resurrection_n from_o the_o death_n of_o sin_n to_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n for_o on_o such_o the_o second_o death_n shall_v have_v no_o power_n three_o there_o be_v a_o death_n for_o sin_n or_o because_o of_o sin_n now_o this_o be_v twofold_n temporal_a and_o eternal_a 1._o temporal_a death_n this_o be_v contain_v in_o that_o merciful_a threaten_v god_n give_v unto_o adam_n in_o paradise_n to_o prevent_v his_o apostasy_n gen._n 2.16_o 17._o where_o after_o god_n have_v so_o large_o express_v his_o bounty_n and_o goodness_n unto_o man_n in_o give_v he_o liberty_n to_o eat_v of_o knowledge_n of_o good_a and_o evil_n thou_o shall_v not_o eat_v which_o he_o back_n with_o a_o threaten_v in_o the_o next_o word_n for_o in_o the_o day_n that_o thou_o eat_v thereof_o thou_o shall_v sure_o die_v the_o truth_n of_o which_o threaten_v the_o experience_n of_o all_o mankind_n to_o this_o day_n be_v a_o stand_a confirmation_n so_o true_a be_v that_o of_o the_o apostle_n as_o by_o one_o man_n sin_n enter_v into_o the_o world_n and_o death_n by_o sin_n and_o so_o death_n pass_v upon_o all_o for_o that_o all_o have_v sin_v rom._n 5.12_o 2._o there_o be_v a_o eternal_a death_n for_o sin_n and_o this_o follow_v upon_o the_o death_n of_o the_o body_n consist_v in_o the_o separation_n of_o soul_n and_o body_n from_o the_o presence_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n for_o ever_o in_o hell_n and_o be_v in_o part_n execute_v on_o the_o soul_n of_o wicked_a man_n at_o death_n and_o perfect_o upon_o soul_n and_o body_n at_o the_o resurrection_n when_o the_o wicked_a shall_v be_v turn_v into_o hell_n and_o punish_v with_o everlasting_a destruction_n from_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o from_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o power_n which_o in_o scripture_n be_v call_v the_o second_o death_n rev._n 21.8_o where_o wicked_a and_o unregenerate_a person_n be_v say_v to_o have_v their_o part_n in_o the_o lake_n that_o burn_v with_o fire_n and_o brimstone_n the_o rich_a man_n in_o the_o gospel_n else_o so_o confident_o say_v to_o his_o soul_n thou_o baste_v good_n lay_v up_o for_o many_o year_n eat_v drink_v and_o be_v merry_a but_o death_n will_v not_o be_v put_v off_o so_o for_o that_o night_n be_v his_o soul_n take_v from_o he_o notwithstanding_o all_o his_o great_a possession_n it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o cry_v out_o on_o a_o death_n bed_n with_o it_o be_v a_o take_a thing_n we_o delight_v in_o thing_n that_o be_v beautiful_a beauty_n to_o some_o be_v a_o portion_n among_o man_n to_o other_o a_o favour_n from_o god_n it_o be_v a_o silent_a eloquence_n a_o tacit_a persuasion_n and_o work_n much_o upon_o some_o what_o be_v say_v of_o the_o church_n psal_n 45.11_o so_o shall_v the_o king_n great_o desire_v thy_o beauty_n i_o know_v it_o be_v speak_v there_o of_o spiritual_a beauty_n the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o beautify_v and_o adorn_v the_o church_n in_o the_o eye_n of_o christ_n for_o it_o be_v say_v the_o
