〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d but_o yet_o a_o new_a commandment_n i_o write_v unto_o you_o so_o that_o though_o it_o be_v not_o absolute_o new_a yet_o upon_o divers_a considerable_a account_n it_o be_v so_o and_o in_o a_o peculiar_a manner_n proper_a to_o the_o evangelical_n institution_n and_o be_v in_o so_o express_v and_o particular_a a_o manner_n ascribe_v to_o the_o teach_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o be_v confer_v upon_o christian_n by_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o if_o there_o hardly_o need_v any_o outward_a instruction_n and_o exhortation_n to_o that_o purpose_n 1_o thess_n 4.9_o but_o as_o touch_v brotherly_a love_n you_o need_v not_o that_o i_o write_v unto_o you_o for_o you_o yourselves_o be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d divine_o teach_v and_o inspire_v to_o love_v one_o another_o this_o commandment_n then_o of_o love_v one_o another_o be_v by_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n so_o much_o enlarge_v as_o to_o the_o object_n of_o it_o beyond_o what_o either_o the_o jew_n to_o the_o lay_v down_o of_o our_o life_n for_o one_o another_o so_o effectual_o teach_v so_o mighty_o encourage_v so_o very_o much_o urge_v and_o insist_v upon_o that_o it_o may_v very_o well_o be_v call_v a_o new_a commandment_n for_o though_o it_o be_v not_o altogether_o unknown_a to_o mankind_n before_o yet_o it_o be_v never_o so_o teach_v so_o encourage_v never_o be_v such_o a_o illustrious_a example_n give_v of_o it_o never_o so_o much_o weight_n and_o stress_n lay_v upon_o it_o by_o any_o philosophy_n or_o religion_n that_o be_v before_o in_o the_o world_n ii_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o declare_v to_o you_o the_o nature_n of_o this_o commandment_n or_o the_o duty_n require_v by_o it_o and_o that_o will_v best_o be_v do_v by_o instance_v in_o the_o chief_a act_n and_o property_n of_o love_n and_o charity_n as_o humanity_n and_o kindness_n in_o all_o our_o carriage_n and_o behaviour_n towards_o one_o another_o for_o love_n smooth_v the_o disposition_n of_o man_n so_o that_o they_o be_v not_o apt_a to_o grate_v upon_o one_o another_o next_o to_o rejoice_v in_o the_o good_a and_o happiness_n of_o one_o another_o and_o to_o grieve_v at_o their_o evil_n and_o suffering_n for_o love_n unite_v the_o interest_n of_o man_n so_o as_o to_o make_v they_o affect_v with_o what_o happen_v to_o another_o as_o if_o it_o be_v in_o some_o sort_n their_o own_o case_n then_o to_o contribute_v as_o much_o as_o in_o we_o lie_v to_o the_o happiness_n of_o one_o another_o by_o relieve_v one_o another_o want_n and_o redress_v their_o misfortune_n again_o tenderness_n of_o their_o good_a name_n and_o reputation_n a_o proneness_n to_o interpret_v all_o the_o word_n and_o action_n of_o man_n to_o the_o best_a sense_n patience_n and_o forbearance_n towards_o one_o another_o and_o when_o difference_n happen_v to_o manage_v they_o with_o all_o possible_a calmness_n and_o kindness_n and_o to_o be_v ready_a to_o forgive_v and_o to_o be_v reconcile_v to_o one_o another_o to_o pray_v one_o for_o another_o and_o if_o occasion_n be_v at_o least_o if_o the_o public_a good_a of_o christianity_n require_v it_o to_o be_v ready_a to_o lay_v down_o our_o life_n for_o our_o brethren_n and_o to_o sacrifice_v ourselves_o for_o the_o furtherance_n of_o their_o salvation_n iii_o we_o will_v consider_v the_o degree_n and_o measure_n of_o our_o charity_n with_o regard_n to_o the_o various_a object_n about_o which_o it_o be_v exercise_v and_o as_o to_o the_o negative_a part_n of_o this_o duty_n it_o be_v to_o be_v extend_v equal_o towards_o all_o we_o be_v not_o to_o hate_v or_o bear_v ill-will_n to_o any_o man_n or_o to_o do_v he_o any_o harm_n or_o mischief_n love_n work_v no_o evil_a to_o his_o neighbour_n thus_o much_o charity_n we_o be_v to_o exercise_v towards_o all_o without_o any_o exception_n without_o any_o difference_n and_o as_o to_o the_o positive_a part_n of_o this_o duty_n we_o shall_v bear_v a_o universal_a goodwill_n to_o all_o man_n wish_v every_o man_n happiness_n and_o pray_v for_o it_o as_o hearty_o as_o for_o our_o own_o and_o if_o we_o be_v sincere_a herein_o we_o shall_v be_v ready_a upon_o all_o occasion_n to_o procure_v and_o promote_v the_o welfare_n of_o all_o man_n but_o the_o outward_a act_n and_o testimony_n of_o our_o charity_n neither_o can_v be_v actual_o extend_v to_o all_o nor_o aught_o to_o be_v to_o all_o alike_o we_o do_v not_o know_v the_o want_n of_o all_o and_o therefore_o our_o knowledge_n of_o person_n and_o of_o their_o condition_n do_v necessary_o limit_v the_o effect_n of_o our_o charity_n within_o a_o certain_a compass_n and_o of_o those_o we_o do_v know_v we_o can_v but_o relieve_v a_o small_a part_n for_o want_n of_o ability_n whence_o it_o become_v necessary_a that_o we_o set_v some_o rule_n to_o ourselves_o for_o the_o more_o discreet_a order_n of_o our_o charity_n such_o as_o these_o case_n of_o extremity_n ought_v to_o take_v place_n of_o all_o other_o obligation_n of_o nature_n and_o nearness_n of_o relation_n seem_v to_o challenge_v the_o next_o place_n obligation_n of_o kindness_n and_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o benefit_n receive_v may_v well_o lay_v the_o next_o claim_n and_o then_o the_o household_n of_o faith_n be_v to_o be_v peculiar_o consider_v and_o after_o these_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o person_n and_o all_o circumstance_n belong_v to_o they_o be_v to_o be_v weigh_v and_o value_v those_o who_o labour_n in_o a_o honest_a call_n but_o be_v oppress_v with_o their_o charge_n those_o who_o be_v fall_v from_o a_o plentiful_a condition_n especial_o by_o misfortune_n and_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n without_o their_o own_o fault_n those_o who_o have_v relieve_v other_o and_o have_v be_v eminent_o charitable_a and_o beneficial_a to_o mankind_n and_o last_o those_o who_o visible_a necessity_n and_o infirmity_n of_o body_n or_o mind_n whether_o by_o age_n or_o by_o accident_n do_v plead_v for_o they_o all_o these_o do_v challenge_v our_o more_o especial_a regard_n and_o consideration_n iv_o we_o will_v consider_v our_o obligation_n to_o this_o duty_n not_o only_o from_o our_o saviour_n authority_n but_o likewise_o from_o our_o own_o nature_n and_o from_o the_o reasonableness_n and_o excellency_n of_o the_o thing_n command_v this_o be_v the_o commandment_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n who_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n
