love_a kindness_n which_o he_o have_v show_v to_o his_o people_n in_o general_n and_o to_o good_a man_n in_o particular_a and_o therefore_o this_o good_a king_n can_v burst_v forth_o in_o earnest_a exhortation_n to_o other_o o_o love_v the_o lord_n all_o you_o his_o saint_n for_o the_o lord_n preserve_v the_o faithful_a for_o your_o three_o duty_n viz._n gratitude_n which_o you_o will_v have_v be_v whole_o from_o god_n be_v not_o to_o be_v alienate_v to_o other_o tribe_n nor_o to_o other_o family_n of_o the_o same_o tribe_n the_o property_n of_o the_o land_n remain_v firm_a only_o the_o use_n and_o income_n of_o it_o may_v be_v sell_v for_o a_o season_n which_o yet_o may_v at_o any_o time_n be_v redeem_v and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o redeem_v it_o necessary_o revert_v to_o the_o ancient_a owner_n at_o the_o year_n of_o jubilee_n and_o hereupon_o industry_n be_v encourage_v and_o peace_n establish_v and_o they_o sit_v under_o their_o in_o a_o most_o proper_a sense_n own_o vine_n and_o figtree_n none_o make_v they_o afraid_a nay_o god_n have_v not_o only_o bestow_v upon_o the_o seed_n of_o jacob_n all_o that_o they_o enjoy_v but_o even_o they_o themselves_o be_v also_o can_v be_v the_o gift_n of_o any_o other_o for_o the_o propriety_n of_o they_o be_v for_o ever_o his_o and_o his_o providence_n will_v never_o part_v with_o the_o guidance_n and_o direction_n of_o they_o and_o therefore_o though_o other_o shall_v give_v they_o we_o it_o be_v his_o bounty_n through_o their_o hand_n how_o then_o may_v those_o in_o the_o judaic_a state_n love_v the_o law_n which_o have_v immediate_a relation_n to_o god_n as_o a_o lawgiver_n how_o full_a of_o reason_n be_v they_o be_v there_o not_o the_o great_a beauty_n in_o they_o which_o can_v it_o be_v discern_v by_o our_o outward_a eye_n who_o be_v it_o can_v see_v and_o not_o love_v they_o and_o sure_o what_o appear_v true_o beautiful_a to_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o soul_n i._n e._n to_o clear_a and_o deliberate_a thought_n will_v call_v no_o less_o for_o love_n but_o much_o more_o intellectual_a beauty_n be_v much_o to_o be_v prefer_v before_o that_o which_o be_v sensible_a and_o if_o i_o may_v once_o more_o paraphrase_n this_o expression_n of_o the_o psalmist_n o_o how_o i_o love_v thy_o law_n methinks_v it_o impli_v thus_o much_o nothing_o in_o the_o world_n be_v there_o that_o shall_v hinder_v i_o from_o love_a it_o i_o prefer_v it_o before_o all_o other_o thing_n however_o esteem_v they_o be_v by_o men._n be_v it_o leave_v to_o my_o choice_n whether_o i_o will_v have_v any_o of_o these_o law_n repeal_v or_o whether_o i_o will_v fear_v love_n and_o be_v grateful_a unto_o god_n or_o not_o though_o no_o punishment_n shall_v be_v inflict_v if_o i_o do_v not_o do_v it_o there_o shall_v not_o be_v one_o law_n the_o less_o for_o my_o duty_n towards_o my_o god_n and_o lawgiver_n nor_o shall_v any_o thing_n how_o pleasant_a or_o advantageous_a soever_o it_o be_v buy_v off_o my_o observance_n so_o much_o blood_n of_o man_n in_o circumcision_n of_o beast_n in_o sacrifice_n other_o though_o not_o cruel_a may_v yet_o seem_v to_o proceed_v and_o be_v by_o many_o thought_n so_o to_o do_v from_o the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o supreme_a without_o any_o discernible_a reason_n for_o their_o be_v enjoin_v and_o consequent_o without_o any_o love_n to_o his_o creature_n for_o what_o love_n can_v be_v see_v there_o where_o no_o reason_n can_v be_v assign_v why_o such_o and_o such_o thing_n be_v command_v or_o forbid_v and_o who_o be_v it_o then_o that_o can_v love_v such_o law_n of_o this_o sort_n be_v those_o that_o forbid_v the_o wear_n of_o linen_n and_o woollen_a in_o the_o same_o garment_n the_o plough_v with_o a_o ox_n and_o a_o ass_n together_o and_o the_o use_n of_o such_o and_o such_o creature_n for_o food_n and_o other_o not_o unlike_a unto_o these_o and_o then_o further_o the_o law_n that_o require_v fear_n be_v such_o as_o be_v enforce_v upon_o the_o account_n that_o god_n be_v terrible_a and_o where_o so_o great_a terribleness_n be_v at_o the_o bottom_n of_o these_o law_n how_o can_v they_o be_v so_o much_o love_v for_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v perfect_a love_n cast_v out_o fear_n and_o where_o law_n do_v require_v so_o much_o fear_n the_o love_n to_o they_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o less_o pray_v eubulus_n tell_v i_o be_v these_o to_o be_v except_v from_o our_o psalmist_n love_n or_o if_o not_o how_o can_v it_o be_v true_o say_v he_o love_v they_o eubul_n for_o the_o satisfy_n of_o you_o in_o these_o thing_n and_o first_o for_o your_o first_o objection_n to_o wit_n that_o of_o those_o law_n which_o in_o their_o observance_n have_v relation_n unto_o god_n immediate_o some_o may_v seem_v to_o have_v no_o real_a goodness_n in_o they_o but_o cruelty_n rather_o as_o the_o shed_n so_o much_o blood_n of_o man_n in_o circumcision_n and_o of_o beast_n in_o sacrifice_n it_o will_v not_o i_o suppose_v be_v unmeet_a that_o these_o thing_n be_v consider_v 1._o that_o the_o law_n which_o have_v so_o much_o love_n here_o express_v to_o it_o be_v as_o i_o before_o hint_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o moral_a law_n chief_o for_o this_o have_v a_o real_a and_o intrinsic_a goodness_n in_o it_o it_o be_v just_a and_o good_a that_o god_n as_o he_o be_v our_o god_n and_o lawgiver_n shall_v be_v fear_v love_a and_o have_v gratitude_n show_v to_o he_o 2._o as_o to_o those_o other_o law_n of_o circumcision_n and_o sacrifice_n though_o in_o themselves_o consider_v they_o be_v not_o moral_o good_a yet_o consider_v with_o relation_n to_o all_o the_o good_a
son_n to_o die_v in_o our_o room_n that_o the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n shall_v be_v destroy_v in_o we_o and_o that_o we_o as_o be_v but_o meet_v for_o we_o to_o do_v shall_v endeavour_v after_o holiness_n of_o life_n the_o son_n of_o god_n therefore_o that_o he_o may_v be_v our_o propitiation_n and_o that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v altogether_o unfit_a to_o who_o so_o great_a favour_n shall_v be_v show_v come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o establish_v and_o promote_v sobriety_n righteousness_n and_o godliness_n among_o men._n it_o pity_v he_o to_o see_v those_o who_o he_o have_v create_v in_o such_o a_o eminent_a rank_n of_o being_n to_o wander_v in_o darkness_n unable_a by_o all_o their_o reason_n to_o find_v out_o those_o thing_n that_o nearly_o concern_v they_o and_o recommend_v upon_o uncertain_a ground_n those_o that_o in_o some_o faint_a measure_n they_o do_v discern_v he_o hereupon_o reduce_v they_o into_o right_a path_n give_v they_o a_o true_a sight_n of_o their_o wretched_a estate_n prescribe_v a_o exact_a rule_n to_o live_v by_o and_o settle_v it_o on_o a_o strong_a and_o sure_a foundation_n not_o only_a as_o agreeable_a to_o man_n reason_n which_o though_o sometime_o right_a be_v often_o dim_a and_o erroneous_a but_o as_o suitable_a to_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n which_o be_v absolute_o perfect_a as_o be_v the_o dictate_v of_o his_o wisdom_n which_o can_v be_v deceive_v the_o resolution_n of_o his_o will_n which_o be_v most_o holy_a the_o injunction_n of_o his_o authority_n which_o be_v most_o unquestionable_a and_o the_o only_a way_n to_o a_o true_a and_o last_a happiness_n whence_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o discern_v that_o in_o infinite_a love_n he_o give_v his_o law_n unto_o we_o and_o the_o same_o love_n from_o which_o these_o law_n proceed_v do_v in_o a_o eminent_a manner_n confirm_v they_o and_o testify_v their_o be_v divine_a when_o he_o give_v they_o he_o ascend_v into_o a_o mount_n and_o therein_o there_o be_v indeed_o some_o agreeableness_n betwixt_o the_o give_n of_o the_o law_n by_o moses_n and_o by_o him._n but_o this_o mount_n do_v not_o burn_v with_o fire_n nor_o have_v it_o blackness_n and_o darkness_n and_o tempest_n as_o the_o other_o have_v to_o keep_v the_o people_n at_o a_o distance_n from_o he_o neither_o be_v his_o miracle_n of_o the_o severe_a kind_n as_o those_o of_o old_a for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v he_o by_o a_o almighty_a power_n restore_v several_a to_o life_n but_o none_o ever_o suffer_v death_n by_o he_o he_o give_v health_n to_o more_o than_o a_o few_o for_o from_o he_o the_o blind_a receive_v their_o sight_n the_o lame_a walk_v the_o leper_n be_v cleanse_v but_o he_o never_o hurt_v the_o body_n of_o any_o that_o it_o may_v well_o be_v say_v he_o go_v about_o do_v good_a but_o such_o a_o sweet-natured_a establishment_n of_o his_o law_n we_o the_o less_o may_v wonder_v at_o as_o be_v no_o more_o than_o what_o may_v well_o be_v expect_v when_o such_o infinite_a and_o unspeakable_a love_n have_v bring_v he_o into_o the_o world_n to_o give_v law_n a_o very_a great_a inducement_n sure_a for_o we_o to_o love_v those_o law_n which_o be_v bottom_v on_o such_o a_o tender_a affection_n to_o mankind_n theoph._n it_o be_v pity_n that_o any_o shall_v be_v willing_a to_o overthrow_v this_o so_o great_a love_n in_o he_o who_o be_v our_o lawgiver_n by_o say_v that_o it_o can_v consist_v with_o the_o divine_a justice_n to_o punish_v a_o innocent_a person_n in_o the_o place_n of_o the_o guilty_a that_o by_o a_o act_n of_o dominion_n god_n lay_v affliction_n upon_o our_o lord_n but_o also_o a_o act_n which_o be_v conducive_a to_o the_o best_a end_n in_o the_o world_n the_o illustrate_v of_o the_o infinite_a justice_n of_o god_n in_o punish_v sin_n of_o his_o infinite_a mercy_n in_o save_v sinner_n and_o of_o his_o unspeakable_a wisdom_n in_o do_v it_o in_o such_o a_o way_n which_o the_o contrivance_n of_o man_n and_o angel_n can_v never_o have_v reach_v unto_o and_o since_o god_n dominion_n be_v so_o much_o plead_v in_o this_o matter_n for_o the_o avoid_v the_o name_n of_o punishment_n and_o make_v it_o to_o be_v only_a affliction_n we_o may_v pertinent_o ask_v why_o by_o his_o dominion_n he_o may_v not_o punish_v a_o innocent_a person_n offer_v himself_o in_o the_o place_n of_o the_o offender_n as_o well_o as_o throw_v affliction_n upon_o he_o as_o great_a and_o the_o person_n that_o bring_v they_o from_o the_o city_n of_o refuge_n and_o such_o like_a which_o thing_n do_v show_v forth_o the_o greatness_n of_o our_o lawgiver_n though_o while_o on_o earth_n he_o for_o most_o gracious_a end_n be_v in_o appearance_n mean._n for_o what_o man_n ever_o before_o he_o be_v so_o honour_v as_o to_o have_v the_o state_n and_o government_n of_o a_o great_a nation_n for_o so_o long_a a_o time_n to_o be_v form_v as_o a_o prophecy_n of_o he_o and_o though_o greatness_n as_o such_o be_v rather_o fit_v to_o strike_v a_o reverence_n than_o to_o allure_v affection_n child_n or_o other_o relation_n in_o who_o themselves_o be_v in_o a_o manner_n still_o here_o continue_v which_o to_o one_o who_o right_o consider_v it_o show_v forth_o god_n righteous_a judgement_n upon_o they_o but_o because_o it_o be_v not_o always_o safe_a to_o pronounce_v that_o the_o untimely_a death_n or_o unexpected_a misery_n of_o some_o particular_a person_n be_v a_o immediate_a stroke_n of_o god_n upon_o they_o for_o their_o disobedience_n for_o our_o christian_a charity_n will_v not_o permit_v this_o when_o we_o know_v no_o signal_n crime_n by_o they_o and_o the_o great_a affliction_n of_o some_o who_o be_v not_o great_a sinner_n than_o other_o man_n and_o of_o some_o who_o we_o have_v reason_n to_o esteem_v as_o good_a man_n may_v caution_n we_o in_o this_o point_n not_o to_o be_v overforward_a to_o judge_n and_o because_o also_o we_o see_v a_o great_a many_o wicked_a man_n to_o live_v and_o become_v old_a to_o be_v in_o no_o trouble_n as_o other_o man_n to_o die_v in_o peace_n and_o leave_v the_o rest_n of_o their_o substance_n for_o their_o babe_n therefore_o we_o may_v affirm_v it_o as_o a_o truth_n viz._n that_o god_n see_v it_o fit_v general_o not_o to_o cut_v off_o those_o man_n nor_o yet_o to_o force_v they_o into_o obedience_n who_o by_o their_o disobedience_n do_v thus_o make_v he_o to_o serve_v he_o see_v it_o fit_v general_o not_o to_o cut_v they_o off_o that_o they_o may_v have_v space_n for_o repentance_n thus_o do_v he_o to_o the_o church_n of_o thyatira_n i_o give_v she_o say_v he_o space_n to_o repent_v of_o her_o fornication_n
