they_o be_v a_o light_n to_o our_o foot_n and_o lantern_n to_o our_o path_n how_o can_v we_o be_v guide_v by_o they_o unless_o we_o thus_o keep_v they_o in_o our_o mind_n they_o can_v have_v no_o desire_n after_o the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n who_o have_v not_o taste_v it_o by_o holy_a meditation_n nor_o can_v they_o grow_v thereby_o unless_o they_o thus_o feed_v upon_o it_o how_o can_v the_o good_a seed_n of_o god_n word_n take_v root_n in_o our_o heart_n and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o our_o life_n if_o the_o care_n of_o this_o world_n or_o deceitfulness_n of_o riches_n hinder_v we_o from_o consider_v and_o meditate_v upon_o it_o so_o as_o to_o fasten_v it_o in_o our_o heart_n and_o fix_v it_o upon_o our_o understanding_n and_o affection_n he_o that_o desire_v to_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n or_o to_o walk_v with_o he_o must_v do_v this_o duty_n he_o that_o desire_v to_o be_v teach_v of_o god_n and_o hear_v the_o voice_n behind_o he_o say_v this_o be_v the_o way_n he_o must_v be_v conversant_a in_o this_o he_o that_o do_v not_o this_o must_v either_o be_v a_o lukewarm_a christian_a or_o a_o hypocrite_n or_o no_o christian_a for_o a_o hypocrite_n may_v discourse_v and_o talk_v of_o the_o thing_n of_o religion_n mortification_n renovation_n and_o regeneration_n repentance_n conversion_n of_o forsake_v the_o world_n and_o take_v off_o his_o affection_n from_o the_o thing_n below_o and_o set_v they_o on_o thing_n above_o but_o he_o do_v little_o think_v of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v powerful_a to_o take_v off_o his_o affection_n from_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n the_o lust_n of_o the_o eye_n and_o the_o pride_n of_o life_n and_o to_o fix_v they_o on_o god_n and_o on_o the_o beauty_n of_o holiness_n but_o the_o regenerate_v man_n that_o find_v corruption_n in_o his_o heart_n will_v be_v restless_a in_o his_o thought_n when_o he_o find_v some_o corruption_n ready_a to_o break_v out_o and_o lead_v he_o captive_a to_o sin_n until_o he_o have_v find_v out_o some_o thing_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o have_v efficacy_n and_o power_n by_o his_o endeavour_n and_o the_o assistance_n of_o god_n grace_n to_o conquer_v every_o thought_n inclination_n and_o imagination_n of_o his_o corrupt_a nature_n as_o if_o peradventure_o a_o slanderous_a tongue_n have_v provoke_v he_o with_o such_o slander_n as_o he_o most_o abhor_v and_o he_o find_v himself_o too_o prone_a to_o return_v the_o like_a viz._n rail_a for_o rail_a curse_v for_o curse_v he_o thereupon_o retire_v himself_o and_o either_o by_o his_o own_o memory_n call_v to_o mind_v the_o behaviour_n of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n and_o the_o holy_a command_n of_o he_o that_o have_v call_v we_o out_o of_o darkness_n into_o his_o marvellous_a light_n out_o of_o sin_n to_o sanctification_n and_o holiness_n and_o what_o he_o command_v we_o to_o do_v that_o he_o have_v call_v we_o to_o not_o to_o serve_v sin_n or_o live_v any_o long_a therein_o but_o that_o we_o shall_v walk_v as_o christ_n walk_v and_o as_o he_o be_v revile_v and_o revile_v not_o again_o but_o submit_v to_o he_o that_o judge_v righteous_o so_o he_o endeavour_v also_o and_o pray_v to_o god_n that_o he_o may_v conform_v himself_o or_o else_o he_o betake_v himself_o for_o the_o help_n of_o his_o memory_n to_o the_o write_a word_n and_o will_v search_v what_o holy_a job_n do_v in_o the_o like_a case_n be_v false_o accuse_v by_o his_o friend_n and_o there_o find_v that_o the_o holy_a man_n answer_v those_o false_a accusation_n thus_o my_o witness_n be_v in_o heaven_n my_o record_n be_v on_o high_a this_o direct_v he_o and_o inable_v he_o to_o conquer_v his_o passion_n and_o he_o rejoice_v that_o he_o have_v find_v such_o a_o powerful_a scripture_n and_o he_o endeavour_v to_o improve_v it_o by_o meditation_n that_o he_o may_v be_v able_a always_o to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o upon_o the_o like_a occasion_n and_o god_n so_o much_o bless_v his_o people_n and_o direct_v and_o guide_v they_o in_o this_o business_n that_o he_o often_o help_v they_o when_o at_o a_o loss_n and_o direct_v they_o by_o accident_n to_o hear_v such_o a_o sermon_n or_o read_v such_o a_o place_n as_o most_o proper_o agree_v with_o their_o meditation_n and_o present_a occasion_n whereby_o they_o receive_v satisfaction_n and_o will_v never_o leave_v the_o meditation_n of_o it_o till_o they_o conceive_v themselves_o able_a to_o conquer_v the_o like_a temptation_n so_o if_o they_o be_v encounter_v with_o the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n and_o find_v themselves_o hardly_o beset_v with_o the_o bate_n of_o covetousness_n or_o with_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n they_o intend_v with_o all_o their_o might_n those_o argument_n which_o be_v prevalent_a with_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n to_o take_v they_o off_o this_o sensual_a love_n to_o the_o heavenly_a love_n to_o love_n god_n and_o his_o grace_n and_o spiritual_a gift_n and_o enjoyment_n and_o jesus_n christ_n our_o bless_a saviour_n and_o redeemer_n who_o shed_v his_o precious_a blood_n for_o we_o and_o in_o deed_n and_o word_n of_o the_o high_a expression_n have_v manifest_v his_o love_n to_o we_o court_v we_o to_o love_v he_o again_o with_o such_o significant_a and_o full_a expression_n of_o his_o love_n as_o no_o tongue_n can_v ever_o express_v unless_o be_v sick_a of_o love_n he_o will_v not_o fail_v then_o to_o bring_v she_o into_o his_o banqueting-house_n and_o defend_v she_o with_o his_o love_n as_o with_o a_o banner_n and_o stay_v she_o with_o flagon_n and_o comfort_v she_o with_o apple_n and_o also_o he_o will_v bring_v she_o into_o his_o chamber_n and_o unveil_v his_o beauty_n to_o she_o and_o give_v she_o his_o love_n and_o now_o she_o may_v well_o despise_v all_o other_o rival_n of_o her_o love_n like_o the_o eagle_n that_o catch_v not_o fly_n or_o like_o he_o who_o have_v drink_v the_o sweet_a water_n of_o the_o fountain_n he_o will_v not_o present_o drink_v in_o a_o muddy_a puddle_n or_o seek_v to_o quench_v his_o thirst_n in_o break_a cistern_n which_o hold_v no_o water_n and_o so_o for_o other_o temptation_n and_o peril_n which_o the_o soul_n find_v itself_o to_o lie_v under_o through_o the_o
anger_n malice_n revenge_n covetousness_n lust_n concupiscence_n or_o the_o like_a and_o mourn_v over_o it_o humble_o entreat_v he_o to_o succour_v relieve_v help_v heal_v cleanse_v wash_v purge_v and_o purify_v they_o by_o the_o renew_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o else_o as_o he_o answer_v st._n paul_n pray_v against_o the_o thorn_n in_o his_o flesh_n he_o will_v supply_v they_o with_o grace_n sufficient_a for_o they_o from_o these_o promise_n we_o may_v see_v the_o reason_n why_o our_o bless_a saviour_n in_o that_o form_n of_o prayer_n teach_v we_o to_o pray_v in_o the_o plural_a number_n our_o and_z we_o for_o this_o include_v ourselves_o and_o our_o fellow-member_n of_o the_o mystical_a body_n of_o christ_n some_o whereof_z be_v but_o babe_n or_o child_n in_o religion_n and_o can_v pray_v for_o themselves_o as_o not_o have_v receive_v so_o great_a measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o that_o they_o have_v need_n of_o our_o prayer_n and_o our_o charity_n include_v they_o do_v not_o hinder_v our_o request_n for_o ourselves_o but_o rather_o promote_v they_o we_o see_v also_o why_o sometime_o they_o pray_v more_o particular_o but_o for_o themselves_o as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n do_v against_o his_o particular_a malady_n and_o burden_n which_o he_o groan_v under_o and_o so_o david_n do_v pray_v against_o his_o own_o particular_a sin_n and_o suffering_n deliver_v i_o from_o bloody-guiltiness_n turn_v away_o my_o eye_n from_o behold_v vanity_n and_o quicken_v i_o in_o thy_o law_n incline_v my_o heart_n to_o thy_o testimony_n and_o not_o to_o covetousness_n etc._n etc._n for_o which_o particular_a grace_n we_o may_v upon_o occasion_n pray_v in_o the_o behalf_n of_o other_o according_a to_o that_o precept_n of_o the_o apostle_n if_o any_o man_n see_v his_o brother_n sin_n a_o sin_n which_o be_v not_o unto_o death_n he_o shall_v pray_v for_o he_o and_o it_o shall_v be_v forgive_v he_o likewise_o may_v we_o pray_v for_o the_o deliverance_n of_o they_o from_o their_o affliction_n and_o peril_n which_o they_o lie_v under_o as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n desire_v the_o saint_n to_o who_o he_o write_v to_o pray_v for_o his_o deliverance_n for_o nature_n dictate_v these_o prayer_n for_o ourselves_o but_o grace_n for_o other_o that_o be_v our_o brethren_n in_o christ_n the_o hope_n of_o speed_v be_v that_o which_o incourage_v and_o excite_v with_o strength_n and_o courage_n in_o every_o undertake_n we_o go_v about_o if_o we_o seek_v of_o god_n in_o prayer_n the_o thing_n which_o be_v according_a to_o his_o will_n those_o gift_n and_o grace_n and_o improvement_n which_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o give_v those_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v invite_v we_o to_o ask_v or_o command_v we_o to_o ask_v those_o that_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n have_v teach_v we_o to_o ask_v those_o which_o the_o experience_n of_o other_o saint_n and_o servant_n of_o god_n prove_v to_o be_v acceptable_a and_o proper_a request_n those_o grace_n which_o we_o be_v command_v to_o have_v those_o degree_n of_o grace_n and_o those_o mean_n which_o we_o be_v command_v to_o use_v and_o those_o spiritual_a joy_n and_o enjoyment_n which_o we_o long_o for_o and_o can_v be_v happy_a without_o why_o shall_v we_o doubt_v of_o our_o success_n or_o why_o shall_v we_o not_o expect_v a_o quick_a return_n let_v we_o then_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o seek_v out_o those_o thing_n as_o the_o original_n of_o all_o grace_n we_o first_o be_v teach_v by_o our_o saviour_n to_o pray_v to_o god_n to_o give_v we_o the_o holy_a spirit_n and_o he_o that_o obtain_v this_o obtain_v also_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o love_n joy_n peace_n meekness_n gentleness_n patience_n etc._n etc._n and_o all_o grace_n whatsoever_o for_o as_o the_o lord_n teach_v we_o our_o whole_a duty_n in_o one_o word_n viz._n love_n so_o here_o he_o teach_v we_o in_o one_o word_n the_o sum_n of_o all_o we_o need_v to_o pray_v for_o for_o although_o we_o pray_v for_o many_o thing_n yet_o the_o sum_n of_o all_o spiritual_a thing_n be_v contain_v in_o this_o and_o if_o we_o seek_v the_o spiritual_a gift_n and_o grace_n which_o be_v signify_v in_o that_o expression_n seek_v you_o first_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o his_o righteousness_n the_o other_o thing_n shall_v be_v add_v unto_o we_o without_o seek_v in_o this_o also_o be_v sum_v up_o all_o that_o we_o ought_v to_o pray_v against_o viz._n all_o our_o spiritual_a enemy_n the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n the_o lust_n of_o the_o eye_n and_o the_o pride_n of_o life_n and_o every_o thing_n that_o satan_n overcome_v the_o son_n of_o man_n withal_o this_o general_n be_v branch_v into_o six_o petition_n in_o the_o lord_n prayer_n for_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o we_o we_o be_v make_v holy_a the_o temple_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o be_v make_v capable_a to_o sanctify_v god_n holy_a name_n the_o love_n of_o god_n be_v spread_v abroad_o in_o our_o heart_n god_n law_n be_v write_v in_o our_o heart_n and_o put_v in_o our_o inward_a part_n by_o the_o mission_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n into_o we_o we_o all_o know_v he_o and_o know_v his_o judgement_n and_o do_v they_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o world_n become_v the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o of_o his_o christ_n righteousness_n will_v run_v down_o as_o a_o river_n and_o holiness_n to_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v write_v upon_o we_o and_o all_o our_o common_a thing_n every_o pot_n in_o jerusalem_n shall_v be_v like_o the_o bowl_n before_o the_o altar_n and_o jesus_n christ_n shall_v have_v the_o uttermost_a part_n of_o the_o earth_n for_o his_o possession_n when_o these_o and_o the_o like_a promise_n be_v fulfil_v and_o the_o earth_n shall_v be_v full_a of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o lord_n so_o that_o we_o pray_v implicity_n for_o these_o promise_n when_o we_o pray_v these_o petition_n in_o the_o lord_n prayer_n likewise_o when_o we_o pray_v thy_o will_v be_v do_v we_o pray_v for_o the_o spirit_n to_o enable_v we_o to_o do_v it_o and_o we_o pray_v to_o god_n for_o the_o fulfil_n of_o those_o promise_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n which_o relate_v to_o it_o viz._n that_o god_n will_v be_v our_o god_n and_o we_o shall_v be_v his_o people_n that_o we_o shall_v run_v and_o not_o be_v weary_a walk_v and_o not_o faint_a mount_v up_o with_o wing_n like_o a_o eagle_n and_o renew_v our_o strength_n like_o a_o eagle_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v a_o willing_a people_n so_o in_o the_o other_o petition_n namely_o that_o for_o remission_n of_o sin_n we_o can_v be_v assure_v of_o it_o nor_o have_v peace_n of_o conscience_n but_o by_o the_o operation_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o our_o heart_n by_o faith_n exciting_a in_o we_o unfeigned_a sorrow_n for_o those_o sin_n wherewith_o we_o have_v grieve_v it_o and_o work_v in_o we_o a_o steadfast_a resolution_n and_o purpose_n never_o to_o commit_v the_o like_a again_o also_o when_o we_o pray_v against_o temptation_n it_o be_v intend_v that_o we_o crave_v this_o aid_n by_o the_o assistance_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n to_o escape_v they_o for_o thereby_o we_o be_v make_v sufficient_a and_o able_a to_o fly_v they_o or_o to_o overcome_v they_o and_o to_o be_v more_o than_o conqueror_n so_o that_o no_o spiritual_a weapon_n form_v against_o we_o shall_v proper_a and_o if_o god_n give_v we_o his_o holy_a spirit_n we_o obtain_v also_o the_o other_o petition_n namely_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o evil_a and_o to_o enjoy_v food_n and_o raiment_n and_o all_o the_o necessary_n of_o life_n for_o these_o be_v inseparable_o contain_v in_o the_o privilege_n of_o the_o saint_n for_o god_n be_v a_o wall_n of_o fire_n round_o about_o they_o bread_n shall_v be_v give_v they_o and_o their_o water_n shall_v be_v sure_a so_o that_o petition_n also_o be_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o promise_n contain_v in_o that_o of_o ask_v the_o holy_a spirit_n the_o rather_o for_o this_o that_o all_o other_o promise_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n be_v employ_v in_o this_o this_o notwithstanding_o we_o find_v the_o saint_n and_o servant_n of_o god_n pray_v in_o other_o word_n and_o form_n and_o by_o the_o spirit_n too_o who_o assistance_n i_o humble_o crave_v for_o my_o further_a progress_n in_o these_o meditation_n certain_o when_o the_o holy_a spirit_n assist_v we_o in_o prayer_n it_o do_v not_o only_o enable_v we_o to_o say_v or_o pray_v in_o a_o perscribe_v form_n but_o dictate_v the_o word_n and_o thing_n pray_v for_o according_a to_o the_o necessity_n of_o the_o person_n pray_v and_o pray_v for_o although_o we_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n that_o be_v dead_a wherein_o we_o be_v hold_v that_o we_o shall_v henceforth_o serve_v god_n in_o the_o newness_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o not_o in_o the_o oldness_n of_o the_o latter_a yet_o must_v we_o pray_v against_o all_o
you_o refuse_v i_o have_v stretch_v out_o my_o hand_n and_o no_o man_n regard_v but_o you_o have_v set_v at_o nought_o all_o my_o counsel_n and_o will_v none_o of_o my_o reproof_n i_o also_o will_v laugh_v at_o your_o calamity_n nevertheless_o we_o must_v continue_v pray_v though_o the_o lord_n seem_v inexorable_a for_o though_o he_o tarry_v long_o it_o may_v be_v that_o he_o only_o intend_v especial_o if_o thy_o conscience_n tell_v thou_o of_o any_o particular_a sin_n which_o may_v procure_v they_o and_o that_o thou_o submit_v to_o he_o who_o send_v it_o with_o patience_n if_o his_o will_n be_v not_o to_o remove_v his_o hand_n confess_v it_o to_o be_v his_o mercy_n that_o thou_o be_v not_o consume_v and_o hear_v the_o rod_n and_o he_o that_o appoint_v it_o and_o if_o by_o thy_o great_a affliction_n thou_o be_v deprive_v of_o all_o comfort_n and_o make_v the_o spectacle_n of_o all_o misery_n yet_o thou_o be_v to_o trust_v to_o thy_o amends_o at_o the_o last_o day_n though_o worm_n consume_v thy_o flesh_n yet_o it_o may_v be_v comfort_n enough_o to_o support_v thou_o that_o thou_o know_v that_o thy_o redeemer_n live_v and_o thou_o shall_v see_v he_o at_o the_o last_o day_n so_o job_n by_o execution_n some_o go_v to_o heaven_n as_o the_o thief_n upon_o the_o cross_n the_o promise_a blessing_n and_o enjoyment_n benefit_n deliverance_n and_o immunity_n and_o earthly_a comfort_n must_v not_o be_v take_v or_o understand_v absolute_o but_o subordinate_o and_o relative_o viz._n as_o may_v conduce_v and_o further_o the_o spiritual_a and_o eternal_a welfare_n of_o those_o who_o be_v heir_n to_o they_o and_o have_v title_n to_o claim_v they_o therefore_o they_o must_v be_v seek_v with_o submission_n and_o modesty_n as_o we_o find_v jacob_n pray_v but_o only_o for_o food_n and_o raiment_n and_o our_o bless_a lord_n and_o saviour_n when_o he_o pray_v that_o the_o bitter_a cup_n of_o his_o suffering_n may_v pass_v from_o he_o it_o be_v with_o submission_n nevertheless_o not_o my_o will_n but_o thy_o will_n be_v do_v because_o these_o prayer_n be_v the_o dictate_v of_o nature_n which_o the_o saint_n and_o servant_n of_o god_n do_v not_o use_v to_o enlarge_v but_o suppress_v albeit_o god_n oftentimes_o grant_v they_o with_o a_o overplus_n as_o when_o david_n ask_v life_n and_o god_n grant_v he_o long_a life_n viz._n for_o ever_o solomon_n wisdom_n and_o god_n give_v he_o beside_o riches_n and_o honour_n and_o jacob_n ask_v but_o food_n and_o raiment_n and_o the_o lord_n increase_v he_o to_o two_o band_n and_o abraham_n a_o child_n and_o god_n grant_v he_o seed_n like_o the_o sand_n of_o the_o sea_n but_o in_o these_o prayer_n too_o we_o do_v not_o find_v the_o dictate_v of_o nature_n only_o but_o the_o dictate_v of_o the_o spirit_n usual_o combine_v in_o the_o same_o petition_n for_o it_o be_v probable_a that_o hanna_n do_v design_n the_o glory_n of_o god_n in_o ask_v a_o child_n as_o the_o consecrate_v he_o to_o god_n give_v reason_n to_o suppose_v although_o we_o read_v of_o another_o cause_n which_o be_v the_o contempt_n which_o she_o suffer_v for_o her_o barrenness_n and_o her_o grief_n thereof_o conceive_v which_o drive_v she_o to_o seek_v to_o god_n for_o succour_n and_o pray_v vow_a if_o god_n will_v give_v she_o a_o male_a child_n than_o she_o will_v give_v he_o to_o the_o lord_n all_o especial_o if_o we_o design_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n therewith_o those_o who_o have_v receive_v such_o prayer_n with_o a_o overplus_n be_v much_o more_o bind_v to_o consider_v what_o they_o shall_v retribute_v and_o if_o they_o they_o have_v vow_v too_o let_v they_o perform_v lest_o they_o lose_v all_o again_o for_o their_o unworthiress_n and_o ingratitude_n and_o with_o these_o caution_n god_n petition_n then_o shall_v not_o his_o prince_n be_v much_o more_o gracious_a to_o sue_v to_o god_n upon_o his_o own_o promise_n be_v a_o argument_n of_o faith_n much_o use_v by_o the_o faithful_a people_n of_o god_n as_o we_o find_v in_o many_o of_o the_o psam_n and_o a_o argument_n wherein_o god_n delight_v as_o he_o do_v in_o every_o work_n that_o be_v of_o faith_n and_o no_o man_n that_o ever_o pray_v thus_o lose_v his_o labour_n i_o can_v affirm_v that_o they_o always_o obtain_v the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n because_o they_o be_v not_o absolute_o promise_v though_o godliness_n lord_n shall_v want_v no_o manner_n of_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a psal_n 34._o yet_o these_o worldly_a blessing_n be_v not_o absolute_o good_a for_o every_o person_n in_o every_o condition_n therefore_o be_v not_o absolute_o promse_v but_o yet_o if_o we_o do_v seek_v these_o bodily_a comfort_n by_o use_n of_o mean_n we_o ought_v to_o join_v prayer_n with_o the_o mean_n else_o god_n will_v for_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n jesus_n labour_v herein_o without_o faint_v and_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o reprove_v in_o the_o next_o word_n nevertheless_o i_o have_v somewhat_o against_o thou_o
