ignorance_n and_o two_o as_o a_o fiery_a law_n to_o deter_v they_o from_o sin_n and_o frighten_v they_o into_o their_o duty_n that_o so_o they_o may_v not_o run_v into_o transgression_n through_o negligence_n 1._o as_o a_o large_a plain_a rule_n to_o show_v they_o their_o duty_n this_o particular_a and_o this_o only_o i_o insist_v upon_o erewhile_o when_o i_o explain_v what_o be_v the_o substance_n of_o the_o apostle_n answer_v to_o the_o objection_n and_o i_o shall_v add_v no_o more_o unto_o it_o two_o it_o do_v not_o only_o hinder_v transgression_n by_o inform_v they_o in_o their_o duty_n lest_o they_o shall_v run_v into_o transgression_n through_o ignorance_n but_o as_o a_o fiery_a law_n to_o deter_v they_o from_o transgression_n and_o to_o frighten_v they_o into_o their_o abound_v with_o and_o these_o two_o thing_n make_v up_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n and_o indeed_o this_o terror_n make_v up_o of_o these_o two_o part_n be_v almost_o all_o that_o which_o be_v peculiar_a to_o their_o dispensation_n for_o else_o for_o
and_o this_o be_v the_o commandment_n which_o that_o day_n moses_n command_v they_o last_o another_o thing_n in_o this_o paragraph_n that_o will_v not_o seem_v perhaps_o to_o some_o to_o look_v like_o in_o this_o scripture_n of_o do_v the_o commandment_n the_o commandment_n for_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o be_v perhaps_o the_o same_o with_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o do_v partly_o at_o word_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n take_v in_o its_o utmost_a exactness_n to_o be_v fulfil_v to_o a_o tittle_n this_o be_v not_o nigh_o thou_o it_o be_v as_o far_o as_o heaven_n further_a then_o either_o how_o be_v the_o pharisee_n in_o our_o saviour_n time_n addict_v to_o invent_a ceremony_n and_o superstition_n though_o one_o will_v think_v they_o have_v enough_o ceremony_n in_o their_o law_n already_o what_o wash_n have_v they_o invent_v etc._n etc._n and_o it_o be_v say_v they_o teach_v for_o doctrine_n humane_a tradition_n and_o invention_n mat._n 15.9_o wicked_a man_n and_o those_o that_o be_v careless_a in_o keep_v the_o moral_a law_n be_v for_o ceremony_n to_o patch_v up_o a_o righteousness_n pharisees_n be_v for_o they_o to_o have_v a_o redundancy_n of_o righteousness_n also_o where_o it_o be_v in_o any_o less_o degree_n and_o for_o that_o i_o have_v assert_v that_o there_o be_v a_o mixture_n of_o legality_n in_o the_o service_n of_o the_o best_a christian_n and_o saint_n of_o god_n i_o think_v it_o good_a to_o improve_v this_o character_n yet_o further_o for_o the_o discovery_n of_o that_o legality_n which_o may_v be_v find_v in_o the_o saint_n themselves_o that_o legality_n of_o the_o saint_n therefore_o which_o be_v discoverable_a and_o reprovable_a by_o this_o character_n be_v 1._o that_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o some_o good_a man_n have_v a_o conscience_n of_o some_o superstitious_a observation_n and_o i_o will_v not_o for_o all_o the_o world_n think_v the_o contrary_a lest_o i_o shall_v condemn_v the_o generate_fw-la on_o of_o the_o just_a and_o think_v too_o hardly_o of_o some_o dear_a saint_n of_o god_n and_o i_o must_v needs_o confess_v there_o be_v too_o much_o occasion_n give_v man_n to_o run_v into_o this_o extreme_a of_o not_o necessitate_v by_o weakness_n or_o any_o other_o occasion_n and_o with_o their_o hat_n upon_o their_o head_n now_o how_o easy_o may_v this_o give_v occasion_n to_o other_o that_o take_v offence_n at_o this_o irreverence_n out_o of_o a_o fear_n lest_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v reverend_a enough_o in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n to_o approve_v of_o kneel_v at_o the_o sacrament_n which_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o many_o good_a man_n may_v be_v very_o zealous_a for_o as_o also_o forbow_v at_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n but_o yet_o i_o reckon_v that_o good_a man_n be_v in_o great_a danger_n of_o legality_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o moral_a duty_n then_o in_o ceremony_n and_o superstition_n for_o though_o i_o have_v acknowledge_v that_o some_o good_a man_n may_v have_v a_o conscience_n of_o some_o superstitious_a observation_n be_v mislead_v by_o the_o care_n to_o be_v sufficient_o reverend_a yet_o to_o be_v great_o superstitious_a in_o gospel-day_n be_v a_o shrewd_a sign_n of_o a_o rot_a heart_n and_o so_o not_o so_o incident_a to_o good_a man_n 2_o for_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n good_a man_n legality_n lie_v in_o two_o particular_n 1._o when_o they_o have_v perform_v a_o duty_n right_o and_o spiritual_o they_o be_v apt_a to_o reflect_v upon_o it_o with_o a_o spiritual_a pride_n and_o ready_a to_o lay_v too_o much_o stress_n upon_o it_o and_o to_o think_v that_o now_o god_n must_v needs_o grant_v the_o petition_n they_o have_v ask_v whereas_o perhaps_o they_o have_v answer_n enough_o in_o the_o very_a sweetness_n of_o the_o duty_n itself_o and_o the_o communion_n with_o god_n which_o they_o have_v enjoy_v in_o it_o and_o therefore_o if_o they_o be_v not_o humble_v after_o such_o a_o duty_n to_o see_v their_o great_a unworthiness_n notwithstanding_o all_o they_o have_v do_v they_o be_v so_o far_o guilty_a of_o legality_n or_o which_o be_v more_o usual_a two_o the_o saint_n too_o often_o content_v themselves_o with_o do_v their_o tale_n and_o number_n of_o duty_n pray_v morning_n and_o evening_n perhaps_o read_v so_o many_o chapter_n but_o be_v not_o spiritual_a in_o what_o they_o do_v watch_v over_o their_o heart_n that_o they_o worship_n god_n in_o a_o right_a manner_n with_o those_o spiritual_a affection_n stir_v in_o prayer_n that_o attention_n in_o read_v that_o shall_v be_v this_o be_v common_o know_v by_o the_o name_n of_o rest_v in_o duty_n this_o be_v â—egality_n and_o yet_o i_o think_v that_o which_o be_v find_v more_o or_o less_o in_o all_o the_o saint_n and_o so_o far_o indulge_v to_o themselves_o by_o some_o saint_n till_o at_o last_o they_o have_v a_o general_a deadness_n and_o benummedness_n in_o all_o their_o grace_n and_o then_o they_o fall_v into_o sad_a complaint_n of_o desertion_n and_o run_v into_o a_o maze_n and_o a_o labyrinth_n of_o doubt_n and_o trouble_n of_o mind_n which_o perhaps_o they_o get_v not_o out_o of_o for_o some_o year_n together_o as_o for_o those_o saint_n that_o pick_v and_o choose_v among_o the_o commandment_n that_o be_v high-flown_a in_o their_o notion_n and_o yet_o err_v gross_o in_o matter_n of_o common_a justice_n and_o honesty_n that_o be_v indeed_o not_o only_o slanderous_o report_v or_o unworthy_o suspect_v to_o be_v so_o disobedient_a to_o magistrate_n with_o other_o like_a irregular_a christian_n i_o have_v nothing_o to_o say_v to_o they_o here_o i_o refer_v these_o to_o the_o head_n of_o hypocritical_a legallist_n that_o expect_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o a_o parcial_a obedience_n to_o the_o command_v of_o the_o moral_a law_n these_o not_o be_v spot_n of_o god_n child_n there_o be_v other_o miscarriage_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o duty_n that_o be_v to_o be_v refer_v to_o their_o legality_n of_o spirit_n as_o for_o instance_n if_o they_o chance_v through_o extraordinary_a occasion_n to_o have_v miss_v the_o time_n of_o prayer_n morning_n or_o evening_n to_o have_v miss_v the_o read_v their_o number_n of_o chapter_n or_o do_v any_o good_a task_n which_o they_o have_v lay_v upon_o themselves_o than_o they_o have_v a_o great_a fear_n and_o terror_n lest_o god_n shall_v be_v angry_a and_o displease_v with_o they_o though_o indeed_o mercy_n be_v at_o end_v instead_o of_o sacrifice_n but_o such_o as_o these_o belong_v to_o another_o head_n or_o character_n of_o a_o legal_a spirit_n to_o wit_n a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n which_o i_o shall_v come_v unto_o anon_o i_o have_v now_o perfect_o do_v with_o the_o first_o character_n as_o to_o its_o explication_n proof_n and_o application_n strict_a or_o more_o strict_a morallist_n be_v legality_n if_o man_n will_v seek_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o law_n they_o will_v endeavour_v at_o least_o to_o keep_v the_o whole_a law_n and_o if_o they_o know_v they_o fall_v short_a of_o it_o as_o those_o profane_a wicked_a man_n which_o you_o mention_v out_o of_o isaiah_n jeremiah_n and_o other_o place_n that_o be_v very_o wicked_a do_v and_o yet_o rest_v in_o ceremonious_a performance_n and_o external_a privilege_n these_o indeed_o deserve_v the_o name_n of_o wicked_a man_n but_o not_o of_o legallist_n or_o such_o as_o seek_v justification_n by_o the_o law_n now_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v and_o i_o shall_v say_v but_o little_o more_o than_o what_o i_o have_v say_v before_o 1._o it_o be_v true_a none_o ought_v to_o seek_v of_o regular_a love_n be_v not_o of_o such_o a_o kind_a as_o this_o for_o he_o do_v not_o die_v for_o we_o to_o remain_v accurse_v but_o undergo_v the_o curse_n that_o so_o he_o may_v procure_v the_o blessing_n for_o his_o people_n yea_o and_o for_o himself_o hebr._n 12.2_o who_o for_o the_o joy_n that_o be_v set_v before_o he_o endure_v the_o cross_n and_o despise_v the_o shame_n but_o in_o the_o good_a people_n may_v make_v much-like_a those_o in_o another_o case_n of_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o god_n they_o will_v say_v if_o god_n be_v in_o hell_n his_o presence_n will_v make_v hell_n to_o be_v heaven_n and_o they_o have_v rather_o be_v in_o hell_n with_o god_n than_o in_o heaven_n without_o he_o people_n have_v better_o show_v their_o love_n to_o god_n and_o their_o humility_n in_o those_o action_n and_o duty_n which_o he_o call_v they_o unto_o then_o in_o such_o supposition_n and_o fantastical_a expression_n and_o imagination_n as_o these_o that_o be_v the_o three_o god_n as_o i_o apprehend_v they_o to_o lie_v and_o then_o show_v why_o this_o of_o mercenariness_n can_v be_v make_v a_o character_n of_o a_o legal_a spirie_n and_o then_o come_v to_o give_v some_o more_o true_a scripture-character_n first_o the_o order_n of_o principle_n in_o every_o saint_n heart_n in_o his_o act_n for_o god_n the_o 3._o first_o now_o i_o suppose_v that_o the_o order_n of_o principle_n in_o every_o saint_n heart_n be_v this_o 1._o he_o consider_v himself_o a_o creature_n and_o so_o bind_v to_o obey_v his_o creator_n and_o since_o god_n have_v always_o propose_v some_o reward_n to_o the_o keep_n and_o threaten_v to_o the_o breach_n of_o his_o law_n therefore_o these_o three_o principle_n may_v go_v hand_n in_o hand_n together_o and_o these_o be_v the_o first_o principle_n that_o any_o be_v to_o begin_v with_o in_o serve_a god_n now_o i_o think_v there_o be_v no_o exceed_v in_o any_o one_o of_o these_o principle_n a_o man_n can_v be_v too_o sensible_a of_o his_o obligation_n as_o a_o creature_n to_o serve_v his_o creator_n a_o man_n can_v be_v too_o sensible_a of_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o reward_n nor_o of_o the_o danger_n of_o hell_n yet_o i_o think_v every_o christian_n have_v somewhat_o more_o to_o move_v he_o in_o his_o service_n to_o god_n then_o bare_o these_o three_o principle_n as_o for_o instance_n some_o such_o as_o i_o have_v name_v love_v to_o god_n gratitude_n yea_o many_o time_n nobleness_n of_o heart_n we_o love_v god_n say_v the_o apostle_n speak_v in_o the_o name_n of_o all_o the_o saint_n because_o he_o love_v we_o first_o etc._n etc._n and_o these_o further_a principle_n seem_v to_o follow_v in_o this_o order_n from_o the_o first_o that_o when_o i_o be_o thorough_o convince_v that_o it_o be_v my_o duty_n to_o live_v to_o god_n when_o i_o consider_v what_o danger_n i_o avoid_v in_o it_o what_o good_a i_o obtain_v by_o it_o i_o be_o engage_v to_o love_v that_o god_n love_n then_o love_n who_o take_v such_o care_n of_o his_o creature_n that_o he_o will_v not_o have_v they_o perish_v nay_o that_o he_o will_v not_o have_v they_o do_v their_o duty_n for_o nought_o here_o be_v now_o another_o principle_n a_o principle_n of_o love_n beyond_o the_o three_o first_o principle_n again_o i_o consider_v the_o greatness_n of_o the_o reward_n the_o richness_n of_o the_o grace_n in_o provide_v it_o by_o the_o gift_n of_o christ_n the_o father_n give_v he_o and_z his_o giving_z himself_z the_o send_v the_o spirit_n into_o our_o heart_n to_o persuade_v we_o and_o win_v upon_o we_o to_o accept_v of_o this_o grace_n all_o the_o care_n that_o the_o lord_n take_v about_o we_o and_o hereby_o i_o be_o yet_o more_o and_o more_o engage_v to_o love_n and_o gratitude_n nobleness_n aster_n that_o nobleness_n one_o
