may_v be_v justify_v by_o his_o faith_n as_o he_o that_o work_v not_o or_o which_o have_v no_o work_n in_o our_o apostle_n sense_n may_v it_o be_v no_o where_n neither_o in_o word_n nor_o sense_n say_v but_o he_o that_o love_v not_o but_o believe_v on_o he_o that_o justifi_v the_o ungodly_a his_o faith_n be_v count_v to_o he_o for_o righteousness_n but_o the_o contrary_a in_o substance_n be_v flat_o affirm_v by_o the_o apostle_n james_n chap._n 2._o beside_o other_o scripture_n as_o i_o shall_v god_n will_v come_v afterward_o to_o show_v and_o therefore_o i_o do_v think_v that_o our_o same_o work_n of_o love_n justice_z and_o mercy_n that_o be_v enjoin_v in_o the_o gospel_n be_v also_o command_v in_o the_o law_n answer_n this_o indeed_o be_v a_o objection_n that_o deserve_v 3.23_o act_n 6_o 7._o romans_z 1.5_o jude_n 3_o sometime_o the_o law_n of_o faith_n roman_n 3.27_o and_o when_o we_o suppose_v the_o duty_n and_o work_n of_o love_n to_o be_v oppose_v to_o faith_n under_o one_o covenant_n for_o reason_n proper_a to_o it_o and_o yet_o yet_o the_o same_o work_v not_o to_o be_v oppose_v to_o faith_n in_o the_o other_o covenant_n for_o reason_n peculiar_a to_o it_o let_v it_o not_o seem_v strange_a to_o any_o man_n for_o it_o be_v no_o new_a thing_n to_o affirm_v and_o deny_v the_o same_o thing_n under_o several_a circumstance_n and_o different_a consideration_n for_o it_o we_o have_v this_o evangelist_n word_n for_o it_o as_o appear_v by_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o the_o forecited_n verse_n where_o he_o say_v that_o they_o viz._n the_o devil_n know_v that_o be_v quite_o beyond_o their_o expectation_n that_o the_o messiah_n when_o ever_o he_o shall_v come_v shall_v turn_v they_o out_o of_o their_o way_n of_o sacrifice_v by_o become_v a_o sacrifice_n himself_o or_o that_o their_o expectation_n of_o remission_n of_o sin_n shall_v be_v take_v off_o the_o former_a and_o place_v on_o the_o latter_a and_o therefore_o they_o cleave_v to_o the_o letter_n of_o the_o law_n for_o eternal_a salvation_n which_o so_o far_o be_v ordain_v by_o god_n but_o for_o a_o temporal_a and_o reject_v christ_n and_o the_o term_n of_o salvation_n by_o he_o which_o the_o law_n point_v they_o to_o in_o the_o spiritual_a signification_n of_o it_o of_o which_o they_o be_v whole_o ignorant_a hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o for_o all_o their_o labour_a seek_v and_o strive_v after_o righteousness_n justification_n and_o salvation_n yet_o they_o miss_v it_o as_o seek_v it_o out_o of_o god_n way_n upon_o their_o own_o term_n not_o go_n gal._n 2.21_o for_o if_o righteousness_n come_v by_o the_o law_n than_o christ_n be_v dead_a in_o vain_a how_o can_v that_o be_v but_o that_o they_o do_v attribute_n and_o ascribe_v the_o same_o atone_a virtue_n and_o sin-purging_a efficacy_n unto_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n which_o the_o gospel_n do_v attribute_n unto_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n and_o then_o indeed_o if_o it_o have_v be_v so_o as_o they_o suppose_v it_o be_v that_o sacrifice_n or_o any_o other_o work_v of_o the_o law_n can_v have_v purge_v sin_n so_o as_o christ_n do_v by_o his_o death_n and_o blood_n than_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n will_v have_v be_v in_o vain_a god_n will_v never_o have_v put_v himself_o to_o that_o charge_n as_o to_o give_v his_o son_n to_o death_n to_o take_v away_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n if_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n have_v be_v a_o competent_a mean_n to_o bring_v it_o about_o if_o there_o have_v be_v a_o law_n say_v the_o same_o apostle_n which_o can_v have_v give_v life_n very_o righteousness_n be_v cure_v with_o such_o a_o purge_n the_o sin_n of_o the_o flesh_n overmatch_v the_o law_n in_o this_o kind_n and_o render_v it_o weak_a and_o therefore_o god_n be_v fain_o to_o send_v his_o own_o son_n to_o condemn_v sin_n to_o take_v away_o the_o destroy_a power_n of_o sin_n by_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o himself_o for_o that_o the_o law_n can_v not_o do_v it_o by_o its_o sacrifice_n in_o that_o the_o apostle_n write_v so_o much_o and_o in_o so_o many_o place_n for_o there_o be_v many_o more_o beside_o these_o touch_v the_o weakness_n and_o dis-ability_n of_o the_o law_n to_o do_v that_o work_n of_o their_o law_n in_o the_o point_n of_o justification_n and_o likewise_o in_o what_o sense_n the_o apostle_n deny_v they_o sect._n 5_o and_o now_o if_o any_o man_n shall_v say_v that_o love_n justice_n and_o

have_v confidence_n of_o salvation_n because_o they_o believe_v though_o they_o do_v not_o indeed_o believe_v with_o that_o belief_n unto_o which_o salvation_n be_v promise_v do_v direct_o tread_v in_o the_o step_n of_o some_o in_o the_o apostle_n day_n who_o will_v needs_o be_v confident_a of_o salvation_n though_o all_o the_o faith_n they_o have_v be_v not_o of_o that_o power_n as_o to_o produce_v a_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o apostle_n know_v the_o danger_n of_o such_o a_o confidence_n labour_v exceed_o to_o take_v they_o off_o it_o and_o to_o build_v they_o upon_o a_o better_a bottom_n this_o be_v the_o business_n in_o which_o the_o apostle_n james_n labour_v so_o mighty_o in_o his_o epistle_n and_o we_o may_v easy_o perceive_v what_o disease_n be_v among_o the_o christian_n by_o the_o remedy_n which_o this_o servant_n of_o the_o lord_n apply_v for_o their_o cure_n viz._n a_o inordinate_a love_n of_o the_o world_n which_o manifest_v itself_o in_o a_o adulterous_a and_o too_o near_o a_o compliance_n therewith_o chap._n 4._o beginning_n and_o thereupon_o they_o despise_v the_o poor_a saint_n and_o prefer_v man_n less_o worthy_a if_o they_o be_v rich_a chap._n 2._o their_o want_n of_o the_o true_a christian_n humility_n and_o love_n break_v out_o into_o bitter_a envy_v and_o strife_n and_o a_o undue_a judge_n and_o censure_v one_o of_o descend_v not_o from_o above_o but_o be_v earthly_a sensual_a devilish_a for_o they_o to_o glory_n of_o their_o religion_n and_o of_o their_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o yet_o to_o be_v man_n of_o such_o a_o unchristian_a carriage_n they_o do_v but_o lie_v against_o the_o truth_n which_o they_o pretend_v to_o have_v on_o their_o side_n but_o indeed_o be_v point_n blank_a against_o they_o but_o if_o any_o man_n will_v approve_v himself_o a_o wise_a man_n indeed_o endue_v with_o the_o christian_n knowledge_n of_o the_o right_a kind_n the_o apostle_n tell_v they_o it_o must_v be_v by_o show_v out_o of_o a_o good_a conversation_n his_o work_n with_o meekness_n of_o wisdom_n v._o 13._o again_o chap._n 1.26_o he_o have_v likewise_o encounter_v that_o vain-confidence_n that_o be_v build_v upon_o a_o form_n of_o knowledge_n faith_n and_o profession_n without_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o it_o say_v if_o any_o man_n among_o you_o seem_v to_o be_v religious_a and_o bridle_v not_o his_o tongue_n but_o deceive_v his_o own_o heart_n this_o man_n religion_n be_v vain_a man_n that_o shall_v give_v way_n to_o the_o flesh_n though_o but_o in_o one_o thing_n as_o for_o instance_n a_o licentious_a liberty_n to_o the_o tongue_n not_o endeavour_v by_o watchfulness_n heed_n and_o circumspection_n to_o conform_v to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o lord_n which_o forbid_v not_o only_o lie_v revile_v backbiting_a slander_v corrupt_a and_o unclean_a communication_n but_o also_o foolish_a talk_n and_o jest_v yea_o every_o idle_a word_n how_o religious_a soever_o they_o may_v otherwise_o seem_v to_o themselves_o upon_o account_n of_o their_o formal_a knowledge_n and_o faith_n of_o external_a devotion_n to_o the_o ordinance_n yet_o the_o apostle_n testify_v as_o from_o the_o lord_n that_o such_o do_v but_o deceive_v their_o own_o heart_n befool_v themselves_o with_o a_o vain_a confidence_n of_o be_v religious_a man_n and_o of_o be_v accept_v with_o god_n as_o such_o and_o that_o such_o man_n religion_n be_v vain_a that_o be_v as_o to_o the_o end_n for_o which_o the_o true_a religion_n serve_v not_o as_o if_o all_o their_o religion_n be_v make_v up_o of_o vain_a notion_n but_o though_o they_o have_v never_o so_o sound_a a_o knowledge_n and_o right_a belief_n of_o many_o excellent_a gospel-truth_n and_o though_o they_o add_v thereto_o the_o do_v of_o many_o thing_n yea_o how_o seem_o religious_a soever_o they_o be_v upon_o what_o account_n soever_o yet_o the_o want_n but_o of_o this_o one_o thing_n a_o care_n to_o bridle_v the_o tongue_n will_v render_v all_o a_o man_n religion_n and_o all_o his_o confidence_n of_o salvation_n build_v thereupon_o but_o vain_a &_o unprofitable_a touch_v the_o end_n of_o religion_n the_o end_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o if_o he_o have_v never_o have_v any_o religion_n nor_o seem_a show_n of_o it_o at_o all_o yet_o once_o more_o james_n 2.14_o to_o the_o same_o purpose_n thus_o what_o do_v it_o profit_v my_o brethren_n though_o a_o man_n say_v he_o have_v faith_n and_o have_v not_o work_n can_v faith_n save_v he_o that_o be_v can_v such_o a_o faith_n save_o of_o assent_n in_o the_o begin_n of_o this_o chapter_n he_o clear_o suppose_v they_o to_o have_v the_o faith_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n only_o there_o caution_n they_o not_o to_o yoke_v or_o couple_v their_o faith_n with_o a_o unchristian_a carriage_n assure_v they_o by_o the_o tenor_n of_o his_o discourse_n throughout_o this_o chapter_n especial_o from_o the_o fourteen_o verse_n to_o the_o end_n that_o a_o faith_n so_o yoke_v and_o want_v its_o true_a yoke-fellow_n and_o companion_n the_o gospel_n conversation_n which_o he_o call_v by_o the_o name_n of_o work_n will_v not_o do_v not_o carry_v they_o the_o same_o way_n in_o which_o the_o elect_n have_v be_v all_o travel_n towards_o that_o heavenly_a country_n which_o be_v the_o hope_n of_o all_o the_o saint_n this_o doctrine_n touch_v the_o saint_n dependence_n upon_o god_n counsel_n and_o command_n for_o a_o guide_n as_o the_o proper_a effect_n and_o inseparable_a companion_n of_o their_o dependence_n upon_o
