here_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o overcome_v the_o passion_n or_o to_o restrain_v the_o perturbation_n of_o the_o mind_n &_o the_o inordinate_a desire_n thereof_o and_o to_o be_v absolute_o perfect_a be_v nothing_o else_o then_o after_o the_o victory_n over_o ourselves_o to_o be_v dead_a to_o the_o world_n and_o to_o live_v to_o god_n alone_o 9_o he_o that_o have_v enemy_n and_o not_o set_v upon_o all_o at_o once_o but_o now_o one_o castle_n be_v take_v from_o the_o enemy_n and_o then_o another_o or_o some_o city_n bring_v in_o subjection_n and_o so_o one_o after_o another_o until_o he_o be_v come_v possess_v of_o the_o whole_a kingdom_n even_o so_o do_v a_o religious_a man_n who_o have_v a_o desire_n to_o invade_v &_o set_v upon_o the_o kingdom_n of_o perfection_n religious_a man_n must_v conserve_v and_o keep_v the_o perfection_n he_o have_v get_v and_o of_o the_o manner_n of_o keep_v it_o chap._n xvii_o son_n little_o profit_v the_o good_a health_n of_o body_n to_o be_v recover_v if_o it_o be_v after_o hurt_v again_o by_o any_o intemperance_n of_o eat_v or_o other_o carelessness_n since_o the_o relapse_n into_o sickness_n be_v more_o dangerous_a than_o the_o sickness_n itself_o the_o same_o be_v the_o consideration_n of_o spiritual_a perfection_n which_o once_o be_v have_v profit_v little_a if_o we_o forgo_v it_o again_o through_o default_n of_o our_o own_o vigilancy_n and_o wary_a keep_n of_o the_o same_o and_o if_o the_o relapse_n into_o corporal_a sickness_n be_v a_o matter_n of_o so_o great_a consideration_n for_o the_o danger_n towards_o the_o body_n much_o more_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v a_o relapse_n into_o the_o old_a imperfection_n that_o endanger_v the_o spiritual_a life_n 2._o son_n desire_v thou_o to_o be_v free_v from_o the_o danger_n of_o die_v spiritual_o then_o shun_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v disposition_n to_o that_o death_n for_o we_o learn_v by_o daily_a experience_n that_o they_o who_o once_o languish_v in_o the_o study_n of_o perfection_n do_v fall_n into_o a_o thousand_o defect_n and_o into_o so_o great_a levity_n and_o inconstancy_n of_o manner_n liberty_n of_o conversation_n and_o imprudency_n of_o mind_n as_o not_o only_o all_o shame_n lay_v aside_o they_o do_v nothing_o worthy_a of_o praise_n but_o do_v furthermore_o glory_n &_o rejoice_v in_o their_o own_o error_n and_o defect_n and_o in_o this_o they_o be_v not_o unlike_a to_o those_o angel_n who_o fall_v from_o heaven_n and_o together_o with_o their_o most_o grievous_a ruin_n lose_v also_o all_o their_o spiritual_a gift_n and_o procure_v to_o themselves_o most_o extreme_a evil_n for_o look_v how_o much_o more_o excellent_a they_o be_v in_o dignity_n then_o all_o creature_n so_o much_o more_o by_o their_o fall_n from_o and_o become_v worse_o and_o as_o he_o be_v call_v happy_a who_o decline_v from_o evil_a and_o embrace_v good_a so_o contrariwise_o miserable_a and_o unhappy_a be_v that_o man_n who_o forsake_v the_o way_n of_o perfection_n trace_v &_o hold_v on_o the_o way_n of_o licenciousnes_n and_o liberty_n 3._o but_o to_o conserve_v the_o degree_n of_o perfection_n thou_o have_v get_v there_o be_v two_o virtue_n that_o may_v help_v thou_o and_o those_o be_v love_n and_o humility_n love_n will_v make_v thou_o vigilant_a to_o avoid_v the_o danger_n grow_v from_o thief_n and_o robber_n humility_n will_v conceal_v and_o hide_v thou_o that_o thou_o come_v not_o within_o their_o view_n or_o sight_n and_o how_o profitable_a &_o available_a love_n be_v for_o this_o purpose_n it_o be_v no_o hard_a matter_n to_o demonstrate_v a_o rich_a and_o wealthy_a man_n who_o be_v not_o in_o love_n with_o his_o riches_n soon_o lose_v they_o for_o he_o that_o love_v not_o any_o thing_n esteem_v it_o not_o and_o he_o that_o esteem_v it_o not_o have_v no_o care_n of_o keep_v it_o and_o every_o one_o know_v that_o a_o thing_n negligent_o keep_v be_v easy_o lose_v even_o so_o as_o necessary_a it_o be_v for_o a_o religious_a man_n to_o be_v great_o affect_v to_o the_o perfection_n he_o have_v once_o get_v for_o of_o love_n there_o
which_o he_o before_o promise_v to_o do_v without_o make_v a_o vow_n 6._o there_o be_v other_o utilitye_n which_o vow_n do_v bring_v to_o the_o religious_a for_o first_o undoubted_a it_o be_v that_o the_o tree_n the_o decepe_a root_n it_o shall_v take_v within_o the_o earth_n bring_v forth_o the_o better_a fruit_n even_o so_o man_n will_n the_o more_o stable_n it_o shall_v be_v in_o good_a and_o merit_v more_o for_o the_o former_a exercise_v but_o one_o virtue_n that_o be_v continency_n but_o the_o late_a exercise_v two_o namely_o continency_n and_o religion_n the_o noble_a of_o all_o moral_a virtue_n moreover_o to_o promise_v a_o good_a work_n be_v a_o good_a thing_n and_o to_o perform_v a_o promise_n be_v also_o good_a and_o therefore_o for_o they_o both_o a_o man_n be_v hold_v deprive_v they_o of_o some_o great_a commodity_n they_o may_v have_v just_a cause_n of_o sorrow_v but_o indeed_o they_o lose_v none_o by_o it_o for_o as_o a_o vine_n fasten_v to_o a_o tree_n or_o to_o a_o post_n and_o therefore_o less_o obnoxious_a and_o expose_v to_o the_o injury_n of_o the_o wind_n bring_v forth_o better_a and_o more_o abundant_a fruit_n then_o if_o it_o be_v loose_a and_o untie_v even_o so_o be_v religious_a person_n by_o the_o benefit_n of_o these_o vow_n be_v more_o strong_a and_o stable_n and_o more_o free_a from_o tentation_n and_o do_v yield_v great_a increase_n of_o good_a work_n &_o therefore_o why_o shall_v they_o afflict_v themselves_o with_o grief_n 10._o evil_a must_v needs_o please_v he_o who_o be_v sorry_a for_o good_a or_o complain_v thereof_o when_o be_v imperfect_a and_o miserable_a obedience_n because_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o have_v it_o â—ource_n from_o the_o sp_a of_o self_n love_n the_o miâ—ery_n be_v the_o great_a for_o this_o that_o where_o such_o â—bey_v unwilling_o they_o do_v not_o only_o loose_v â—heir_a merit_n but_o also_o by_o occasion_n of_o their_o disgust_n and_o repugnancy_n they_o make_v the_o act_n of_o obey_v the_o more_o difficult_a and_o hard_o â—nd_v the_o detriment_n and_o hurt_n which_o follow_v and_o shall_v be_v unto_o they_o most_o sweet_a refection_n be_v through_o their_o own_o default_n turn_v into_o bitter_a poison_n for_o he_o that_o obey_v with_o a_o regreet_n and_o unwilling_o ordinary_o murmure_v be_v angry_a and_o give_v a_o offence_n to_o other_o and_o in_o place_n of_o a_o reward_n misery_n stir_v up_o in_o thyself_o a_o effectual_a desire_n of_o obey_v i_o prompt_o &_o sincere_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v and_o crave_v this_o gift_n of_o he_o who_o be_v able_a to_o give_v they_o be_v much_o trouble_v neither_o do_v their_o imperfection_n stay_v here_o but_o they_o further_o will_v do_v that_o exercise_n after_o their_o own_o way_n and_o not_o after_o the_o manner_n that_o be_v appoint_v by_o their_o superior_a and_o so_o their_o will_n go_v before_o the_o will_n of_o the_o superior_a he_o walk_v not_o in_o security_n who_o carry_v his_o light_n behind_o he_o 8._o the_o superior_a be_v he_o who_o carry_v the_o light_n wherewith_o he_o must_v show_v thou_o thy_o way_n not_o thou_o he_o and_o therefore_o thou_o must_v follow_v he_o and_o not_o go_v before_o he_o who_o draw_v his_o superior_a to_o his_o own_o manner_n of_o do_v seek_v not_o to_o obey_v his_o superior_a but_o that_o his_o superior_a obey_v he_o and_o he_o that_o endeavour_v to_o draw_v suffer_v many_o far_o great_a injury_n and_o yet_o do_v not_o for_o that_o withdraw_v my_o love_n but_o spend_v my_o life_n and_o blood_n to_o do_v they_o good_a all_o a_o religious_a man_n wonder_n that_o some_o do_v leave_v their_o vocation_n and_o return_v to_o the_o flesh_n pot_n of_o egypt_n that_o be_v unto_o the_o world_n since_o i_o do_v most_o just_o permit_v it_o for_o their_o negligence_n carelessness_n &_o ingratitude_n unto_o i_o for_o he_o be_v worthy_o spoil_v of_o his_o good_n who_o either_o know_v they_o not_o or_o use_v they_o not_o according_a as_o he_o shall_v perfection_n that_o possible_o in_o thou_o lie_v since_o religion_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o school_n of_o perfection_n neither_o be_v it_o any_o oâ—her_a thing_n to_o be_v religious_a then_o to_o enter_v into_o a_o course_n of_o life_n wherein_o a_o man_n may_v labour_v to_o the_o perfection_n of_o love_v i_o and_o embrace_v of_o virtue_n wherefore_o vain_a be_v the_o religion_n of_o moderation_n such_o as_o be_v agreeable_a to_o beginner_n in_o some_o again_o they_o be_v the_o effect_n and_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o of_o spiritual_a perfection_n as_o in_o the_o proficient_a and_o perfect_a who_o by_o that_o severity_n of_o penance_n do_v subdue_v the_o rebellion_n of_o the_o flesh_n that_o it_o may_v not_o rise_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o by_o frequent_a prayer_n they_o stir_v themselves_o up_o in_o the_o love_n of_o god_n that_o they_o be_v ever_o conjoin_v and_o unite_v to_o he_o though_o in_o some_o also_o those_o outward_a mortification_n of_o the_o body_n if_o the_o perfection_n of_o virtue_n shall_v be_v whole_o place_v therein_o may_v give_v a_o occasion_n of_o ruin_n as_o while_o they_o proceed_v so_o far_o in_o mortification_n of_o the_o outward_a man_n as_o they_o neglect_v the_o inward_a that_o be_v the_o restrain_v of_o the_o motion_n &_o perturbation_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o at_o common_o happen_v the_o three_o thing_n that_o in_o the_o obligation_n of_o vow_n please_v i_o be_v that_o the_o religious_a do_v by_o it_o not_o only_o give_v all_o but_o do_v it_o after_o the_o best_a and_o most_o the_o more_o honourable_a place_n who_o be_v most_o honour_v on_o earth_n but_o he_o who_o be_v â—he_n more_o humble_a and_o therefore_o my_o spirit_n do_v not_o without_o cause_n repose_n upon_o mean_a clothing_n and_o other_o entertainment_n and_o will_v thou_o in_o religion_n not_o content_v with_o the_o common_a affect_v &_o desire_v superfluitye_n this_o be_v not_o to_o be_v or_o to_o lead_v the_o life_n of_o a_o religious_a person_n but_o rather_o to_o cover_v and_o conceal_v a_o secular_a life_n by_o the_o habit_n of_o religion_n 8._o an_o over_o great_a solicitude_n of_o temporal_a commodity_n be_v a_o thorn_n that_o prick_v over_o sore_o and_o great_o hurt_v a_o religious_a man_n for_o first_o it_o make_v he_o a_o procuratour_n for_o the_o body_n yea_o and_o a_o bondslave_n unto_o it_o and_o who_o see_v not_o how_o great_a a_o indignity_n it_o be_v for_o a_o religious_a man_n of_o a_o punisher_n of_o his_o body_n to_o become_v a_o purueyour_fw-mi for_o it_o at_o all_o in_o matter_n of_o spirit_n and_o what_o other_o thing_n be_v this_o then_o to_o make_v he_o sensual_a that_o he_o may_v neither_o taste_v nor_o mind_n those_o thing_n that_o be_v of_o god_n moreover_o it_o make_v he_o churlish_a and_o harsh_a to_o those_o with_o who_o he_o live_v for_o as_o much_o as_o he_o ever_o will_v in_o all_o thing_n have_v what_o be_v best_a and_o most_o commodious_a for_o himself_o neglect_v the_o commodity_n of_o other_o yea_o he_o prefer_v his_o private_a commodity_n before_o the_o common_a not_o regard_v what_o hurt_n may_v redound_v to_o the_o religion_n thereby_o so_o he_o may_v have_v what_o he_o desire_v himself_o and_o what_o be_v this_o but_o to_o spoil_v a_o religious_a man_n of_o charity_n discretion_n and_o all_o 9_o neither_o be_v there_o here_o a_o end_n of_o this_o importune_a &_o preposterous_a care_n of_o the_o body_n but_o it_o further_o make_v the_o religious_a querulous_a idle_a froward_a surly_a a_o murmurer_n and_o of_o a_o perverse_a and_o bad_a example_n he_o will_v have_v all_o move_v to_o commiserate_v and_o pity_v his_o case_n all_o to_o show_v benevolence_n &_o good_a will_n unto_o he_o and_o therefore_o he_o attribute_v every_o least_o distemper_n of_o body_n and_o indisposition_n of_o his_o health_n to_o the_o sore_a travail_n and_o pain_n he_o have_v take_v in_o religion_n and_o how_o can_v it_o be_v possible_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v either_o spirit_n or_o religious_a discipline_n in_o such_o man_n o_o unhappy_a subject_n and_o as_o unhappy_a superior_n who_o permit_v such_o thing_n in_o religion_n wherein_o they_o be_v pastor_n and_o have_v a_o charge_n see_v this_o be_v nothing_o else_o then_o to_o bring_v a_o certain_a infection_n into_o it_o &_o to_o show_v a_o way_n unto_o young_a man_n for_o the_o quite_o ruine_v and_o overthrow_v thereof_o that_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o a_o religious_a man_n to_o mortify_v his_o body_n unless_o the_o mind_n be_v restrain_v also_o chap._n iii_o son_n that_o the_o religious_a man_n so_o mortify_v his_o body_n &_o the_o sense_n thereof_o as_o it_o become_v not_o proud_a &_o rise_v against_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v good_a and_o healthful_a but_o yet_o religious_a perfection_n consist_v not_o therein_o but_o rather_o in_o the_o inward_a virtue_n of_o the_o mind_n of_o which_o follow_v the_o reformation_n of_o the_o passion_n and_o sense_n neither_o can_v the_o body_n be_v direct_v by_o the_o soul_n unless_o the_o soul_n itself_o together_o with_o all_o it_o own_o faculty_n and_o power_n be_v first_o of_o all_o draw_v out_o and_o fashion_v to_o the_o right_n and_o straight_o rule_v a_o crooked_a rule_n be_v not_o for_o the_o make_n of_o a_o thing_n straight_o the_o soul_n be_v then_o rule_v straight_o when_o affliction_n befall_v he_o do_v at_o the_o very_a first_o accept_v it_o as_o a_o particular_a favour_n of_o i_o and_o yield_v i_o most_o hearty_a thanks_n therefore_o and_o second_o seek_v to_o reap_v contrariwise_o how_o much_o do_v it_o displease_v â—e_n to_o see_v a_o religious_a man_n sigh_v deep_o murmur_a and_o discontent_v in_o the_o very_a â—east_n tribulation_n as_o though_o he_o have_v proclaim_v war_n against_o i_o be_v not_o this_o a_o palpable_a arrogancy_n be_v not_o this_o to_o take_v the_o sword_n point_n in_o his_o own_o hand_n true_a it_o be_v â—hat_n tribulation_n be_v a_o sword_n but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v â—â—ken_v by_o the_o hilt_n for_o he_o that_o shall_v lay_v hand_n â—pon_o the_o point_n wound_v himself_o a_o good_a religious_a man_n who_o take_v the_o sword_n heavenly_a father_n who_o goodness_n be_v infinite_a and_o lead_v to_o the_o supreme_a good_a as_o it_o have_v already_o bring_v all_o the_o bless_a that_o dwell_v now_o in_o heaven_n and_o see_v i_o that_o man_n have_v to_o the_o work_n of_o virtue_n and_o therefore_o it_o great_o import_v the_o religious_a man_n at_o all_o time_n to_o have_v imployement_n in_o some_o profitable_a and_o commendable_a thing_n or_o other_o though_o the_o same_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o withdraw_v he_o whole_o from_o curiosity_n foâ—_n as_o it_o be_v attractive_a it_o cause_v a_o man_n oftentimes_o to_o
