vainglory_n we_o shall_v see_v cause_n enough_o if_o we_o may_v but_o be_v bring_v to_o see_v 1._o how_o odious_a it_o be_v to_o man_n 2._o how_o dishonourable_a to_o god_n 3._o how_o contrary_a to_o the_o gospel-spirit_n 4._o how_o destructive_a to_o our_o endeavour_n and_o hope_n and_o 5._o what_o a_o plague_n it_o be_v to_o the_o church_n and_o the_o peace_n thereof_o 1._o it_o be_v certain_o odious_a to_o man_n of_o what_o sort_n or_o complexion_n soever_o they_o be_v it_o be_v a_o thing_n which_o no_o man_n can_v endure_v in_o any_o man_n but_o himself_o and_o for_o which_o more_o than_o for_o any_o one_o thing_n beside_o good_a man_n be_v apt_a to_o fall_v out_o with_o themselves_o the_o proud_a man_n though_o he_o can_v free_o indulge_v himself_o in_o it_o yet_o can_v least_o of_o any_o man_n see_v it_o with_o any_o patience_n in_o another_o nor_o can_v he_o look_v upon_o he_o as_o any_o better_a than_o as_o a_o covetous_a man_n do_v upon_o a_o thief_n or_o robber_n because_o all_o praise_n and_o honour_n he_o account_v his_o own_o due_a and_o think_v whoever_o get_v it_o rob_v he_o of_o what_o be_v he_o he_o therefore_o be_v sure_a to_o condemn_v it_o in_o all_o man_n if_o for_o no_o other_o reason_n yet_o for_o this_o that_o it_o stand_v as_o alexander_n do_v betwixt_o the_o sun_n and_o the_o proud_a cynic_n too_o much_o in_o his_o light_n and_o will_v not_o let_v he_o look_v so_o shine_o as_o he_o will_v do_v and_o the_o humble_a hate_v it_o because_o he_o be_v humble_a and_o hate_v every_o thing_n that_o be_v sinful_a so_o that_o all_o the_o vainglorious_a we_o have_v to_o imitate_v which_o be_v its_o worth_n unknown_a be_v enough_o to_o commend_v it_o unto_o all_o christian_n and_o if_o it_o do_v not_o so_o they_o be_v not_o christian_n whatever_o they_o be_v please_v to_o call_v themselves_o look_v upon_o the_o whole_a life_n and_o death_n of_o he_o who_o come_v to_o be_v the_o saviour_n of_o the_o world_n jesus_n christ_n and_o you_o see_v only_o what_o it_o have_v please_v god_n to_o bestow_v upon_o he_o he_o consider_v yet_o far_o that_o he_o be_v a_o sinner_n and_o that_o he_o offend_v god_n daily_a and_o serve_v he_o at_o best_a very_o imperfect_o and_o weak_o that_o he_o have_v often_o abuse_v god_n goodness_n and_o be_v thereupon_o become_v less_o than_o the_o least_o of_o his_o mercy_n he_o acknowledge_v that_o his_o want_n and_o infirmity_n be_v much_o more_o than_o his_o ability_n and_o that_o there_o be_v hardly_o any_o creature_n of_o god_n but_o do_v now_o as_o he_o be_v a_o sinner_n excel_v he_o in_o something_o at_o least_o in_o innocence_n and_o that_o in_o one_o respect_n or_o other_o he_o stand_v in_o as_o much_o need_n of_o they_o as_o any_o of_o they_o do_v of_o he_o he_o remember_v how_o unable_a he_o be_v of_o himself_o to_o help_v himself_o to_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a either_o for_o his_o soul_n or_o body_n without_o the_o assistance_n and_o blessing_n of_o another_o and_o now_o consider_v all_o this_o and_o much_o more_o to_o this_o purpose_n his_o own_o glory_n vanish_v from_o his_o sight_n he_o entertain_v low_a and_o just_a thought_n of_o himself_o as_o a_o poor_a weak_a wicked_a and_o for_o that_o a_o very_a contemptible_a creature_n that_o can_v deserve_v nothing_o at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n not_o do_v either_o god_n or_o his_o neighbour_n or_o himself_o any_o considerable_a part_n of_o that_o service_n which_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v he_o look_v upon_o all_o that_o he_o have_v as_o another_o free_a gift_n and_o bounty_n he_o look_v upon_o all_o that_o he_o do_v or_o can_v do_v in_o relation_n to_o god_n his_o neighbour_n and_o himself_o as_o imperfect_a at_o best_a and_o without_o god_n blessing_n vain_a if_o not_o hurtful_a and_o hence_o he_o look_v upon_o himself_o as_o a_o very_a unworthy_a and_o useless_a thing_n but_o only_o as_o he_o may_v be_v a_o instrument_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o great_a and_o good_a god_n and_o may_v by_o the_o power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o his_o manager_n be_v direct_v to_o something_o good_a from_o hence_o it_o also_o come_v that_o whatsoever_o this_o humble_a man_n have_v he_o hold_v himself_o as_o a_o debtor_n to_o god_n for_o it_o so_o also_o most_o unworthy_a of_o it_o and_o it_o whatever_o it_o be_v too_o good_a for_o he_o and_o can_v but_o admire_v god_n goodness_n and_o bounty_n to_o such_o a_o thing_n as_o he_o be_v in_o permit_v he_o yet_o to_o live_v if_o he_o suffer_v any_o evil_n he_o account_v it_o a_o very_a light_a thing_n in_o comparison_n of_o what_o he_o have_v before_o we_o see_v 2._o because_o it_o have_v his_o special_a blessing_n rest_v upon_o it_o bless_a be_v the_o poor_a in_o spirit_n for_o they_o be_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n matt._n 5._o 3._o than_o himself_o he_o will_v and_o if_o he_o can_v yet_o he_o will_v do_v all_o that_o he_o can_v towards_o it_o and_o that_o will_v i_o suppose_v satisfy_v the_o apostle_n exhortation_n and_o will_v effect_v what_o be_v desire_v if_o we_o be_v impartial_a in_o judge_v ourselves_o and_o not_o forward_o to_o censure_v other_o if_o we_o be_v not_o more_o busy_a in_o cast_v out_o the_o mote_n that_o be_v in_o our_o brother_n eye_n than_o the_o beam_n that_o be_v in_o our_o own_o eye_n but_o more_o forward_o every_o man_n to_o reform_v himself_o then_o to_o find_v fault_n in_o other_o we_o shall_v practice_v according_a to_o the_o rule_n here_o give_v have_v thus_o far_o see_v how_o the_o duty_n be_v practicable_a we_o may_v easy_o perceive_v how_o happy_a the_o church_n will_v be_v be_v it_o due_o practise_v and_o indeed_o although_o a_o true_o humble_a christian_a will_v hardly_o satisfy_v himself_o in_o do_v less_o than_o all_o that_o have_v be_v say_v and_o though_o it_o may_v be_v nothing_o less_o than_o all_o this_o will_v serve_v to_o denominate_v a_o man_n true_o humble_a yet_o be_v something_o less_o than_o this_o well_o practise_v among_o we_o we_o shall_v soon_o taste_v the_o bless_a fruit_n of_o such_o a_o practice_n suppose_v then_o that_o the_o apostle_n by_o these_o word_n let_v each_o esteem_n other_o better_a than_o themselves_o mean_v no_o more_o but_o thus_o either_o 1._o that_o we_o shall_v esteem_v honour_n and_o love_v they_o better_o who_o we_o real_o think_v to_o be_v better_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o envy_v they_o nor_o endeavour_v any_o way_n to_o lessen_v they_o in_o the_o esteem_n of_o man_n nor_o strive_v to_o get_v above_o they_o but_o let_v they_o enjoy_v without_o disturbance_n the_o respect_n and_o honour_n they_o deserve_v what_o a_o happy_a change_n in_o the_o face_n of_o the_o world_n will_v even_o this_o make_v preferment_n will_v follow_v merit_n and_o every_o thing_n will_v stand_v in_o its_o own_o place_n and_o order_n there_o will_v be_v no_o justle_n for_o pre-eminence_n nor_o any_o thing_n else_o but_o strength_n and_o beauty_n in_o the_o building_n of_o god_n or_o suppose_v 2._o that_o we_o shall_v every_o one_o esteem_v our_o superior_n as_o our_o superior_n and_o think_v they_o better_o only_o for_o this_o that_o they_o be_v our_o superior_n if_o this_o be_v all_o the_o apostle_n mean_v it_o will_v certain_o very_o much_o avail_v to_o the_o establish_n of_o peace_n and_o unity_n there_o will_v be_v no_o resist_n but_o a_o humble_a subjection_n for_o conscience_n sake_n and_o humility_n will_v teach_v we_o either_o to_o rest_v in_o the_o wisdom_n or_o submit_v at_o least_o to_o the_o authority_n of_o our_o governor_n the_o same_o grace_n that_o teach_v we_o to_o obey_v god_n both_o active_o and_o passive_o must_v teach_v we_o also_o to_o obey_v they_o that_o have_v the_o rule_n over_o we_o for_o the_o lord_n sake_n active_o where_o we_o can_v and_o passive_o only_a where_o we_o must_v needs_o and_o though_o we_o can_v not_o see_v in_o they_o the_o image_n of_o god_n wisdom_n and_o goodness_n we_o will_v at_o least_o see_v and_o reverence_v the_o image_n of_o his_o power_n 3._o or_o suppose_v the_o meaning_n be_v that_o we_o shall_v do_v all_o thing_n with_o that_o quietness_n and_o humbleness_n as_o if_o we_o have_v every_o one_o a_o better_a opinion_n of_o the_o other_o wisdom_n and_o piety_n than_o his_o own_o as_o a_o very_a learned_a and_o pious_a annotator_n paraphrase_v the_o word_n it_o be_v too_o obvious_a how_o this_o practice_n will_v conduce_v to_o peace_n to_o need_v any_o far_a explication_n or_o suppose_v 4._o that_o all_o be_v but_o this_o that_o we_o shall_v every_o one_o look_v upon_o other_o as_o our_o superior_n thus_o far_o at_o least_o that_o we_o owe_v they_o a_o duty_n of_o love_n and_o this_o be_v a_o duty_n that_o every_o man_n owe_v to_o every_o man_n nor_o will_v this_o debt_n of_o love_n be_v pay_v by_o any_o less_o than_o humble_o condescend_v to_o promote_v their_o good_a especial_o the_o eternal_a good_a of_o their_o soul_n by_o any_o the_o low_a and_o humble_a service_n we_o can_v do_v they_o be_v this_o do_v indeed_o and_o be_v your_o humble_a servant_n as_o much_o the_o language_n of_o the_o heart_n as_o of_o the_o tongue_n and_o pen_n we_o shall_v soon_o all_o write_v ourselves_o love_v friend_n too_o o_o that_o we_o can_v all_o be_v bring_v to_o be_v more_o in_o love_n with_o this_o most_o charm_a grace_n of_o humility_n not_o as_o it_o be_v in_o other_o only_o but_o chief_o in_o ourselves_o how_o happy_a a_o
