such_o a_o innocent_a and_o virtuous_a pleasure_n and_o i_o the_o rather_o shall_v yield_v to_o you_o in_o what_o you_o desire_v because_o i_o be_o sure_a it_o will_v be_v my_o own_o more_o than_o your_o advantage_n have_v sufficient_o experience_v that_o many_o thing_n well_o speak_v by_o other_o have_v be_v hint_n to_o you_o of_o deep_a inquiry_n and_o more_o grateful_a discourse_n theoph._n proceed_v from_o a_o more_o than_o ordinary_a affection_n in_o that_o good_a king._n eubul_n i_o do_v not_o wonder_v it_o be_v so_o with_o you_o who_o i_o know_v keep_v your_o heart_n soft_a and_o tender_a and_o thereby_o fit_v for_o right_a impression_n from_o the_o holy_a scripture_n but_o your_o say_n that_o those_o word_n seem_v to_o proceed_v from_o a_o more_o than_o ordinary_a affection_n do_v not_o reach_v the_o thing_n home_o they_o not_o seem_v only_o but_o real_o do_v come_v from_o a_o heart_n full_a of_o love_n to_o god_n law_n and_o indeed_o theophilus_n i_o think_v it_o no_o hard_a matter_n to_o discern_v a_o true_a passion_n from_o one_o that_o be_v so_o only_o in_o show_n this_o late_a will_v betray_v itself_o in_o something_o or_o other_o which_o by_o a_o judicious_a eye_n will_v easy_o be_v perceive_v while_o the_o other_o carry_v its_o evidence_n along_o with_o it_o and_o without_o scruple_n be_v present_o own_a as_o genuine_a and_o sincere_a and_o sure_o no_o true_a affection_n can_v be_v more_o convince_o express_v then_o this_o king_n be_v be_v to_o the_o divine_a precept_n his_o say_n o_o how_o i_o love_v thy_o law_n be_v to_o i_o no_o less_o than_o question_v the_o greatness_n of_o the_o psalmist_n love_n unto_o it_o i_o assure_v you_o eubulus_n i_o shall_v not_o have_v be_v so_o much_o affect_v with_o his_o word_n for_o according_a to_o that_o rule_n si_fw-mi vis_fw-la i_o flere_fw-la dolendum_fw-la est_fw-la primum_fw-la ipsi_fw-la tibi_fw-la a_o passion_n will_v not_o over_o quick_o be_v stir_v up_o in_o i_o by_o he_o who_o i_o shall_v think_v be_v himself_o insensible_a but_o that_o we_o may_v not_o mistake_v one_o another_o in_o our_o follow_a discourse_n it_o will_v be_v requisite_a to_o know_v what_o be_v here_o mean_v by_o the_o word_n law_n it_o be_v capable_a of_o more_o than_o one_o signification_n pray_v therefore_o eubulus_n let_v i_o have_v your_o sense_n of_o it_o eubul_n by_o the_o law_n of_o god_n i_o presume_v every_o one_o understand_v the_o will_n of_o god_n which_o he_o in_o his_o word_n have_v declare_v but_o then_o because_o part_v only_o of_o that_o which_o we_o now_o acknowledge_v to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v then_o write_v by_o the_o law_n here_o be_v mean_v the_o law_n give_v by_o moses_n and_o that_o part_n of_o it_o especial_o which_o be_v moral_a although_o the_o judicial_a for_o the_o justice_n and_o prudence_n of_o it_o and_o the_o ceremonial_a for_o its_o mysteriousness_n be_v not_o whole_o to_o be_v exclude_v from_o the_o law_n we_o speak_v of_o nor_o yet_o whatever_o else_o be_v contain_v in_o holy_a writ_n
not_o be_v prompt_v to_o fear_v he_o who_o be_v righteous_a in_o his_o judgement_n and_o will_v not_o spare_v the_o wicked_a if_o god_n be_v true_a in_o his_o prediction_n who_o will_v not_o think_v he_o so_o in_o his_o threaten_n and_o shall_v so_o many_o prophecy_n concern_v he_o who_o come_v to_o destroy_v the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n give_v any_o delight_n to_o he_o who_o be_v resolve_v to_o retain_v those_o work_n it_o will_v be_v a_o strange_a contradiction_n that_o any_o one_o shall_v be_v please_v with_o the_o win_v exhortation_n which_o god_n use_v to_o engage_v man_n unto_o the_o observance_n of_o his_o law_n and_o yet_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n be_v unconcerned_a whether_o he_o observe_v those_o law_n or_o not_o and_o how_o can_v the_o devotion_n of_o the_o saint_n of_o old_a touch_n his_o soul_n with_o any_o delight_n who_o be_v and_o be_v resolve_v to_o continue_v a_o stranger_n unto_o what_o he_o read_v they_o to_o have_v be_v remarkable_a for_o and_o who_o neglect_v that_o obedience_n without_o which_o their_o prayer_n and_o praise_n will_v not_o have_v be_v acceptable_a with_o god_n whosoever_o they_o be_v that_o with_o no_o conformity_n to_o the_o divine_a law_n be_v yet_o please_v with_o and_o do_v pretend_v to_o love_v the_o holy_a write_n they_o shall_v be_v rewardable_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n no_o more_o than_o one_o that_o love_v the_o write_n of_o caesar_n or_o livy_n it_o be_v not_o from_o a_o principle_n of_o goodness_n that_o these_o author_n be_v delight_v in_o but_o they_o please_v the_o fancy_n and_o yield_v something_o that_o hit_v the_o reader_n humour_n just_o so_o be_v it_o with_o this_o divine_a book_n in_o respect_n of_o these_o men._n they_o like_v it_o not_o for_o the_o great_a design_n it_o have_v but_o they_o find_v something_o from_o its_o great_a variety_n that_o delight_v the_o imaginative_a faculty_n or_o their_o knowledge_n therein_o be_v in_o quest_n of_o opinion_n and_o reputation_n among_o man_n which_o how_o much_o below_o the_o dignity_n of_o this_o sacred_a volume_n be_v it_o opinion_n and_o reputation_n even_o in_o obedience_n will_v stand_v a_o man_n in_o little_a stead_n hereafter_o much_o less_o will_v they_o when_o they_o be_v without_o obedience_n theoph._n we_o will_v let_v these_o man_n go_v and_o make_v no_o inquiry_n concern_v they_o but_o what_o eubulus_n shall_v we_o think_v of_o those_o who_o be_v conscientious_o obedient_a to_o the_o divine_a law_n yet_o find_v not_o that_o delight_n therefrom_o which_o earthly_a thing_n do_v frequent_o give_v they_o and_o who_o hereupon_o be_v very_o apt_a to_o interpret_v their_o love_n to_o the_o divine_a precept_n to_o be_v unsincere_a and_o such_o as_o will_v be_v reject_v eubul_n the_o divine_a law_n be_v indeed_o worthy_a the_o high_a pitch_n of_o our_o affection_n and_o they_o be_v happy_a man_n who_o find_v a_o more_o quick_a and_o grateful_a relish_n from_o they_o than_o from_o all_o earthly_a object_n yet_o i_o can_v say_v but_o there_o may_v be_v a_o true_a love_n of_o they_o when_o it_o be_v otherwise_o for_o our_o passion_n have_v a_o very_a great_a dependence_n upon_o the_o outward_a sense_n and_o these_o sense_n admit_v of_o strong_a impression_n from_o material_a thing_n and_o from_o they_o alone_o no_o wonder_n that_o the_o soul_n be_v visible_o affect_v and_o this_o sometime_o the_o more_o from_o the_o unexpectedness_n and_o please_a surprise_n with_o which_o these_o external_n object_n present_v themselves_o insomuch_o that_o it_o require_v labour_n and_o pain_n to_o keep_v our_o affection_n within_o due_a bound_n but_o the_o case_n be_v different_a with_o the_o divine_a law_n they_o be_v of_o a_o spiritual_a nature_n and_o in_o many_o thing_n above_o the_o outward_a sense_n do_v not_o make_v those_o impression_n thereupon_o which_o visible_a object_n do_v so_o that_o here_o if_o the_o affection_n be_v stir_v they_o must_v be_v so_o not_o immediate_o from_o the_o thing_n but_o from_o the_o soul_n own_o reason_v and_o deliberate_a thought_n inculcate_v these_o law_n and_o the_o great_a advantage_n which_o they_o give_v add_v to_o this_o that_o thing_n future_a for_o such_o the_o reward_n of_o these_o law_n be_v do_v not_o give_v so_o quick_a a_o sense_n as_o those_o that_o be_v present_a and_o because_o the_o soul_n be_v at_o some_o pain_n in_o think_v and_o the_o thing_n think_v of_o be_v of_o old_a stand_n to_o our_o knowledge_n as_o the_o practic_n of_o religion_n usual_o be_v there_o be_v not_o that_o pleasure_n from_o surprise_n as_o in_o those_o thing_n that_o fall_v out_o unthought_a of_o or_o be_v new_a unto_o we_o a_o person_n that_o be_v true_o obedient_a to_o these_o law_n and_o resolve_v to_o continue_v so_o need_v not_o despond_v as_o if_o his_o love_n to_o they_o be_v unsincere_a though_o he_o find_v not_o his_o affection_n raise_v to_o such_o a_o pleasurable_a sense_n as_o he_o conceive_v sometime_o from_o worldly_a thing_n god_n will_v not_o require_v that_o thing_n shall_v act_v upon_o the_o soul_n otherwise_o than_o be_v their_o nature_n to_o do_v and_o if_o his_o law_n obtain_v their_o end_n by_o produce_v righteousness_n of_o life_n there_o be_v a_o better_a evidence_n of_o love_n to_o they_o than_o from_o inward_a delight_n alone_o there_o will_v be_v yea_o possible_o if_o the_o man_n will_v cease_v disquiet_v himself_o and_o will_v calm_o search_v his_o own_o heart_n he_o will_v discern_v that_o the_o sacred_a law_n be_v very_o much_o approve_v of_o there_o and_o esteem_v far_o beyond_o those_o earthly_a object_n which_o so_o high_o delight_v he_o he_o see_v that_o the_o affection_n which_o these_o outward_a thing_n do_v so_o much_o heat_n and_o raise_v do_v after_o a_o little_a while_n cool_a and_o sink_v again_o but_o the_o divine_a law_n find_v a_o continue_a respect_n within_o he_o and_o though_o the_o love_n thereof_o do_v not_o enkindle_v a_o flame_n in_o he_o yet_o it_o cease_v not_o to_o have_v warmth_n in_o itself_o he_o see_v that_o his_o affection_n be_v not_o always_o in_o his_o own_o power_n to_o raise_v they_o as_o he_o please_v he_o will_v therefore_o endeavour_v that_o his_o reason_n shall_v supply_v their_o defect_n and_o that_o the_o sacred_a precept_n shall_v never_o want_v this_o to_o attend_v they_o if_o he_o can_v yield_v they_o the_o other_o but_o suppose_v that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a coldness_n towards_o these_o law_n and_o a_o inward_a indisposition_n to_o obedience_n yet_o if_o notwithstanding_o he_o will_v resolute_o obey_v and_o what_o he_o can_v do_v with_o that_o pleasure_n which_o some_o other_o have_v will_v do_v through_o pain_n and_o strive_v he_o will_v not_o be_v disapprove_v by_o his_o lord_n a_o ill_a temper_n of_o soul_n or_o body_n be_v one_o of_o those_o enemy_n against_o which_o he_o be_v to_o exercise_v a_o spiritual_a valour_n and_o if_o he_o shall_v fight_v and_o conquer_v and_o conquer_v he_o do_v if_o his_o obedience_n be_v still_o on_o the_o upper_a hand_n he_o shall_v undoubted_o have_v a_o crown_n and_o for_o aught_o i_o know_v it_o will_v be_v as_o weighty_a a_o one_o as_o his_o who_o obey_v these_o law_n with_o less_o difficulty_n this_o man_n indeed_o be_v much_o happy_a in_o the_o way_n but_o the_o other_o shall_v be_v altogether_o as_o happy_a in_o the_o end._n theoph._n than_o approve_v it_o for_o its_o real_a steadfastness_n do_v want_v such_o lenitive_n eubul_n i_o shall_v be_v glad_a can_v i_o administer_v comfort_n to_o any_o who_o be_v true_o religious_a though_o to_o say_v truth_n theophilus_n many_o be_v too_o apt_a to_o make_v a_o ill_a use_n of_o what_o be_v speak_v after_o this_o manner_n and_o do_v improve_v it_o not_o so_o much_o to_o a_o and_o in_o they_o the_o image_n and_o work_v of_o god_n to_o the_o vile_a of_o drudgery_n when_o the_o understanding_n which_o be_v capable_a of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o shall_v be_v exercise_v to_o the_o right_a conceive_n of_o all_o virtue_n and_o the_o best_a method_n of_o bring_v they_o forth_o into_o action_n shall_v be_v fill_v with_o impure_a conception_n and_o wrought_v will_v i_o be_v from_o question_v the_o goodness_n of_o they_o that_o i_o will_v as_o soon_o doubt_n whether_o it_o be_v good_a to_o live_v and_o be_v happy_a so_o dear_a be_v they_o unto_o i_o yea_o so_o much_o better_a than_o life_n itself_o theoph._n i_o be_o much_o prevail_v upon_o by_o the_o reason_n you_o have_v give_v and_o your_o last_o affectionate_a word_n add_v so_o much_o a_o further_a weight_n to_o those_o reason_n that_o they_o appear_v to_o i_o not_o to_o be_v more_o the_o issue_n of_o your_o brain_n than_o of_o your_o heart_n and_o therefore_o you_o may_v on_o good_a ground_n presume_v that_o they_o will_v be_v convince_a to_o other_o when_o they_o have_v first_o be_v so_o to_o yourself_o but_o though_o i_o acknowledge_v the_o law_n of_o our_o lord_n to_o require_v most_o reasonable_a thing_n of_o we_o and_o do_v find_v that_o they_o true_o have_v a_o high_a place_n in_o my_o esteem_n and_o love_n yet_o i_o will_v confess_v to_o you_o eubulus_n much_o deject_v i_o be_o sometime_o when_o i_o reflect_v upon_o my_o many_o failure_n resolve_v indeed_o i_o do_v for_o the_o great_a care_n and_o circumspection_n but_o yet_o my_o sin_n do_v daily_o increase_v upon_o i_o and_o what_o will_v it_o boot_v i_o to_o love_v these_o law_n when_o every_o day_n i_o transgress_v they_o to_o own_v they_o so_o admirable_o fit_v for_o the_o perfect_a of_o our_o nature_n and_o the_o refine_n of_o our_o practice_n when_o i_o see_v my_o own_o nature_n so_o imperfect_a under_o they_o and_o my_o practcie_n so_o impure_a in_o comparison_n of_o they_o eubul_n what_o you_o now_o say_v theophilus_n make_v way_n for_o and_o will_v best_o be_v answer_v by_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o four_o thing_n viz._n that_o from_o these_o law_n we_o have_v a_o fair_a way_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o all_o sin_n most_o perfect_a these_o law_n be_v as_o you_o have_v hear_v but_o by_o reason_n of_o that_o weakness_n which_o be_v within_o we_o and_o those_o many_o strong_a temptation_n which_o be_v without_o they_o be_v not_o like_a to_o be_v perfect_o obey_v all_o that_o we_o can_v do_v be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o great_a way_n off_o to_o behold_v and_o admire_v that_o perfection_n which_o we_o can_v of_o ourselves_o attain_v unto_o and_o to_o grieve_v that_o we_o daily_o and_o hourly_o some_o way_n or_o other_o have_v sin_v against_o it_o but_o yet_o there_o be_v hope_n in_o israel_n concern_v this_o thing_n our_o bless_a lord_n know_v our_o frame_n and_o make_v and_o see_v that_o our_o strength_n and_o ability_n be_v but_o small_a have_v add_v two_o other_o law_n of_o faith_n and_o repentance_n in_o which_o we_o may_v find_v some_o cheer_v in_o respect_n of_o those_o many_o breach_n of_o the_o divine_a law_n which_o lie_v as_o a_o weight_n upon_o our_o soul_n that_o of_o faith_n require_v thus_o much_o of_o we_o that_o we_o believe_v in_o christ_n as_o a_o saviour_n who_o by_o his_o precious_a blood_n for_o we_o shed_v have_v appease_v god_n wrath_n and_o obtain_v remission_n for_o all_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n and_o for_o we_o in_o that_o number_n and_o from_o the_o mighty_a importance_n of_o this_o law_n and_o the_o infinite_a benefit_n it_o afford_v unto_o we_o the_o whole_a gospel_n and_o all_o the_o law_n thereof_o be_v in_o a_o comprehensive_a word_n call_v the_o law_n of_o faith._n and_o in_o this_o respect_n it_o be_v much_o different_a from_o the_o old_a law._n perfect_a obedience_n be_v require_v by_o that_o and_o because_o perfection_n of_o obedience_n be_v necessary_o ground_v upon_o a_o perfection_n of_o nature_n the_o law_n seem_v therefore_o to_o have_v be_v the_o rule_n not_o of_o our_o work_n only_o but_o of_o our_o nature_n also_o which_o at_o the_o creation_n be_v commit_v pure_a into_o our_o hand_n but_o this_o law_n of_o faith_n by_o reason_n of_o human_a nature_n have_v be_v perfect_a in_o christ_n and_o have_v do_v also_o without_o the_o least_o failure_n whatsoever_o be_v incumbent_a on_o the_o present_o be_o excite_v to_o put_v they_o into_o practice_n by_o reverence_v love_a and_o praise_v he_o who_o have_v give_v such_o law_n unto_o we_o every_o particular_a precept_n towards_o god_n sin_n of_o god_n child_n in_o holy_a scripture_n will_v flatter_v and_o encourage_v themselves_o in_o their_o own_o and_o they_o most_o gross_o and_o dangerous_o err_v who_o think_v that_o god_n will_v esteem_v the_o sin_n of_o his_o child_n which_o be_v the_o same_o
