and_o for_o he_o be_v all_o thing_n and_o in_o particular_a man_n be_v for_o this_o end_n that_o he_o may_v see_v god_n enjoy_v god_n and_o be_v
be_v not_o from_o the_o earth_n but_o from_o heaven_n and_o if_o he_o give_v life_n to_o they_o that_o be_v dead_a he_o may_v be_v just_o call_v the_o bread_n of_o life_n 3._o he_o add_v these_o word_n to_o comfort_v believer_n and_o to_o terrify_v unbeliever_n for_o no_o great_a comfort_n can_v be_v to_o they_o that_o receive_v he_o by_o a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n than_o the_o assure_a hope_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v raise_v up_o by_o he_o from_o death_n to_o a_o glorious_a and_o immortal_a life_n and_o on_o the_o other_o part_n it_o be_v matter_n of_o exceed_a terror_n to_o the_o unbelieving_a and_o wicked_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v partaker_n of_o this_o bless_a resurrection_n but_o they_o shall_v be_v raise_v up_o to_o shame_n and_o confusion_n this_o point_n be_v urge_v diverse_a time_n hereafter_o by_o our_o lord_n resurrection_n and_o therefore_o it_o may_v be_v we_o shall_v have_v occasion_n to_o speak_v of_o it_o more_o full_o only_o now_o consider_v that_o this_o be_v a_o point_n which_o we_o shall_v at_o this_o time_n deep_o meditate_v upon_o he_o who_o call_v we_o and_o offer_v himself_o unto_o we_o be_v no_o less_o than_o he_o who_o call_v here_o thou_o shall_v lift_v up_o thy_o head_n then_o be_v confident_a that_o thy_o redemption_n draw_v near_o when_o god_n say_v to_o thy_o soul_n at_o death_n come_v out_o thou_o shall_v to_o do_v many_o thing_n whereat_o god_n be_v offend_v and_o make_v a_o man_n guilty_a of_o eternal_a death_n so_o this_o sorrow_n be_v no_o matter_n of_o joy_n but_o the_o sorrow_n that_o be_v in_o the_o corinthian_n and_o which_o ought_v to_o be_v in_o we_o all_o be_v of_o another_o kind_n it_o be_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n or_o a_o sorrow_n according_a to_o god_n for_o better_a understanding_n and_o that_o thy_o eye_n be_v fountain_n of_o tear_n that_o thou_o may_v lament_v as_o thou_o ought_v to_o do_v jer._n 9_o 1._o thou_o may_v pray_v to_o god_n that_o he_o will_v give_v thou_o the_o grace_n of_o tear_n and_o that_o he_o who_o bring_v water_n out_o of_o the_o hard_a rock_n will_v soften_v thy_o hard_a heart_n and_o make_v it_o to_o melt_v with_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n 4._o thou_o may_v endeavour_v more_o and_o more_o and_o work_v upon_o thy_o own_o heart_n for_o obtain_v this_o unfeigned_a grief_n this_o if_o we_o do_v god_n will_v accept_v even_o of_o our_o imperfect_a sorrow_n for_o the_o perfect_a sorrow_n of_o christ_n jesus_n and_o for_o these_o strong_a cry_n and_o tear_n even_o the_o tear_n of_o blood_n which_o he_o shed_v for_o we_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o flesh_n before_o we_o go_v hence_o other_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v whether_o or_o not_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v only_o for_o our_o own_o sin_n i_o answer_v it_o must_v be_v also_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o have_v zeal_n to_o the_o glory_n and_o honour_n of_o god_n and_o love_n to_o the_o soul_n of_o other_o man_n but_o he_o must_v be_v sorry_a when_o he_o see_v they_o by_o their_o sin_n despise_v the_o majesty_n of_o god_n trample_v his_o law_n under_o foot_n &_o cast_v themselves_o headlong_o into_o perdition_n hence_o the_o bless_a patriarch_n and_o prophet_n who_o be_v the_o most_o sincere_a friend_n of_o god_n be_v so_o frequent_a in_o holy_a scripture_n in_o mourn_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o oâ—hers_n horror_n have_v take_v hold_n of_o i_o say_v david_n psal_n 119._o thy_o zeal_n have_v consume_v i_o river_n of_o tear_n gush_v out_o of_o my_o eye_n because_o the_o wicked_a despise_v thy_o law_n and_o forget_v thy_o word_n o_o that_o my_o head_n be_v water_n say_v jer._n 9_o 1._o complain_v for_o the_o sin_n and_o misery_n of_o his_o people_n and_o that_o my_o eye_n be_v fountain_n of_o tear_n that_o i_o may_v weep_v day_n and_o night_n thus_o the_o righteous_a soul_n of_o lot_n be_v vex_v continual_o because_o of_o the_o abomination_n that_o he_o do_v hear_v and_o see_v in_o sodom_n we_o be_v command_v to_o pray_v continual_o that_o the_o name_n of_o god_n may_v be_v hallow_v and_o glorify_v and_o therefore_o it_o can_v be_v but_o great_a matter_n of_o grief_n to_o they_o that_o love_n god_n to_o see_v his_o name_n daily_o dishonour_v and_o prophen_v hence_o they_o that_o be_v mark_v ezek._n 9_o be_v such_o as_o do_v sigh_v and_o mourn_v not_o only_o for_o their_o own_o sin_n but_o also_o for_o all_o the_o sin_n and_o abomination_n do_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o land_n second_o it_o may_v be_v ask_v do_v this_o godly_a sorrow_n only_o reach_v to_o our_o sin_n and_o to_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o heaven_n i_o answer_v it_o reach_v also_o to_o the_o consequent_n of_o sin_n and_o first_o to_o the_o imperfection_n that_o be_v in_o we_o in_o serve_v of_o god._n this_o be_v matter_n of_o grief_n even_o unto_o the_o most_o godly_a they_o be_v affect_v with_o a_o godly_a sorrow_n for_o this_o that_o they_o serve_v not_o god_n so_o perfect_o as_o they_o shall_v they_o say_v with_o s._n paul_n with_o grief_n of_o heart_n the_o evil_a that_o i_o will_v not_o do_v that_o i_o do_v and_o the_o good_a that_o i_o will_v do_v that_o i_o do_v not_o o_o miserable_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n 2._o this_o godly_a sorrow_n also_o extend_v itself_o to_o the_o desire_n of_o our_o heavenly_a country_n the_o godly_a mourn_n that_o they_o be_v so_o long_o absent_a from_o the_o lord_n and_o continue_v so_o long_o in_o the_o place_n of_o their_o exile_n they_o say_v with_o david_n woe_n be_v i_o that_o i_o sojourn_v in_o mesech_n and_o that_o i_o dwell_v in_o the_o tent_n of_o kedar_n the_o child_n of_o israel_n mourn_v because_o of_o their_o exile_n in_o babylon_n by_o the_o river_n of_o babylon_n say_v they_o psal_n 137._o we_o sit_v &_o we_o weep_v &_o we_o remember_v zion_n they_o be_v spoil_v by_o the_o babylonian_n of_o their_o good_n of_o their_o land_n honour_n child_n and_o friend_n and_o yet_o the_o chief_a matter_n of_o their_o grief_n be_v that_o they_o want_v zion_n albeit_o that_o be_v but_o a_o earthly_a zion_n and_o now_o spoil_v burn_v and_o sack_v how_o much_o more_o have_v we_o reason_n that_o sit_v by_o the_o water_n of_o babel_n that_o be_v of_o the_o transitory_a pleasure_n of_o the_o confusion_n of_o this_o world_n to_o weep_v when_o we_o remember_v the_o permanent_a joy_n of_o the_o heavenly_a zion_n which_o can_v be_v spoil_v and_o whereunto_o no_o dart_n or_o enemy_n can_v have_v access_n but_o the_o apostle_n speak_v here_o not_o of_o this_o sorrow_n but_o of_o the_o sorrow_n which_o be_v for_o our_o own_o sin_n and_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o and_o unto_o it_o he_o ascrive_v this_o bless_a effect_n that_o follow_v which_o be_v to_o work_v repentance_n unto_o salvation_n not_o to_o be_v repent_v of_o repentance_n it_o may_v be_v demand_v how_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n work_v repentance_n since_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v a_o chief_a part_n of_o repentance_n it_o be_v answer_v first_o by_o some_o that_o the_o apostle_n say_v not_o simple_o that_o it_o work_v repentance_n but_o that_o it_o work_v repentance_n unto_o salvation_n that_o be_v it_o make_v our_o repentance_n true_a profitable_a and_o save_a for_o it_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o life_n of_o our_o repentance_n so_o we_o say_v that_o a_o sober-man_n make_v a_o healthfull-man_n or_o that_o a_o man_n addict_v to_o study_n make_v a_o learnedman_n 2._o this_o godly_a sorrow_n also_o work_v repentance_n itself_o in_o respect_n of_o diverse_a part_n thereof_o repentance_n have_v many_o thing_n in_o it_o and_o some_o of_o they_o be_v wrought_v in_o we_o or_o great_o promove_v by_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n for_o clear_v of_o this_o consider_v that_o repentance_n be_v wrought_v in_o we_o after_o this_o manner_n penitent_n 1._o our_o mind_n be_v enlighten_v and_o the_o eye_n of_o it_o be_v open_v that_o we_o may_v see_v our_o sin_n the_o hynousnes_n and_o the_o deformity_n of_o they_o unless_o we_o have_v this_o sight_n we_o will_v never_o be_v grieve_v for_o they_o therefore_o david_n say_v psal_n 51._o i_o acknowledge_v my_o iniquity_n &_o my_o sin_n be_v continual_o before_o my_o eye_n so_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o prodigal_a son_n luk._n 15._o 17._o that_o he_o come_v to_o himself_o his_o eye_n be_v open_v to_o see_v his_o own_o misery_n and_o his_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n thereof_o with_o this_o sight_n be_v join_v a_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n kindle_v against_o we_o for_o our_o sin_n for_o no_o man_n can_v right_o see_v his_o own_o sin_n but_o he_o must_v see_v that_o god_n be_v offend_v therewith_o whence_o anguish_n and_o terror_n and_o trouble_n arise_v in_o the_o conscience_n hence_o david_n in_o the_o too_o heavy_a a_o burden_n for_o i_o second_o god_n work_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o penitent_a sorrow_n some_o love_n of_o himself_o which_o make_v he_o to_o hate_v and_o detaste_v his_o sin_n whereby_o he_o offend_v god_n and_o to_o have_v in_o he_o this_o godly_a
