house_n and_o come_v no_o more_o than_o he_o carry_v away_o all_o his_o good_n and_o when_o you_o see_v they_o carry_v away_o you_o say_v this_o man_n will_v come_v no_o more_o but_o though_o a_o man_n ride_v a_o great_a journey_n yet_o he_o may_v come_v again_o and_o you_o say_v sure_o he_o will_v come_v again_o why_o because_o still_o his_o good_n wife_n and_o child_n be_v in_o his_o house_n so_o if_o christ_n reject_v a_o man_n and_o go_v away_o final_o he_o carry_v away_o all_o his_o good_n spiritual_a gift_n grace_n and_o principle_n but_o though_o he_o be_v long_o absent_a yet_o if_o his_o householdstuff_n abide_v in_o the_o heart_n if_o there_o be_v the_o same_o desire_n after_o he_o and_o delight_n in_o he_o and_o admire_v of_o he_o and_o mourn_v for_o want_n of_o he_o you_o may_v say_v sure_o he_o will_v come_v again_o why_o because_o his_o householdstuff_n be_v here_o still_o when_o do_v christ_n ever_o forsake_v a_o man_n in_o who_o heart_n he_o leave_v this_o mean_a condition_n so_o he_o may_v but_o enjoy_v he_o we_o find_v that_o the_o saint_n desire_v above_o all_o thing_n to_o be_v kiss_v with_o the_o kiss_n of_o christ_n mouth_n and_o therefore_o the_o your_o own_o perfection_n have_v you_o not_o some_o sense_n of_o your_o own_o imperfection_n do_v you_o look_v upon_o this_o desertion_n as_o the_o great_a affliction_n in_o all_o the_o world_n can_v the_o lord_n i_o do_v not_o find_v a_o envious_a malicious_a persecute_v spirit_n in_o my_o soul_n unto_o the_o saint_n and_o people_n of_o god_n i_o do_v find_v that_o my_o heart_n be_v willing_a to_o forsake_v christ_n and_o the_o good_a way_n of_o christ_n but_o i_o find_v that_o i_o can_v mourn_v for_o the_o absence_n of_o christ_n simple_o for_o itself_o and_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o the_o eternal_a affection_n by_o some_o present_a dispensation_n there_o be_v a_o eternal_a displeasure_n against_o a_o man_n and_o there_o be_v a_o present_a displeasure_n with_o a_o man_n eternal_a displeasure_n or_o hatred_n can_v stand_v with_o eternal_a love_n but_o eternal_a love_n and_o present_a displeasure_n may_v stand_v together_o a_o father_n may_v be_v displease_v with_o the_o child_n for_o the_o present_a and_o yet_o may_v love_v he_o with_o paternal_a love_n so_o god_n may_v and_o do_v love_n though_o for_o the_o present_a displease_v but_o when_o man_n measure_v eternal_a affection_n by_o present_a dispensation_n than_o they_o be_v quite_o discourage_v and_o you_o will_v find_v all_o discouragement_n in_o this_o case_n do_v arise_v from_o hence_o some_o there_o be_v that_o do_v walk_v by_o particular_a providence_n experience_n word_n manifestation_n and_o income_n of_o love_n and_o when_o they_o have_v they_o than_o
to_o suffer_v say_v the_o apostle_n it_o be_v the_o speech_n of_o a_o good_a man_n now_o in_o heaven_n be_v once_o under_o great_a affliction_n o_o lord_n these_o affliction_n be_v thy_o pearl_n and_o i_o will_v wear_v they_o for_o thy_o sake_n 3._o they_o be_v but_o seeem_a evil_n they_o be_v real_a trial_n and_o seem_a evil_n therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v every_o affliction_n seem_v grievous_a but_o consider_v altogether_o it_o be_v rather_o a_o seem_v than_o a_o real_a grief_n and_o therefore_o say_v he_o 2_o cor._n 6.9_o 10._o we_o be_v as_o unknown_a and_o yet_o well_o know_v if_o all_o the_o suffering_n of_o god_n people_n do_v come_v from_o divine_a love_n the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n to_o they_o then_o have_v they_o no_o reason_n to_o be_v discourage_v though_o they_o be_v much_o afflict_v every_o rod_n be_v a_o rod_n of_o rosemary_n to_o they_o fruit_n of_o their_o father_n love_n and_o if_o you_o look_v into_o heb._n 12._o you_o shall_v find_v both_o the_o than_o they_o see_v they_o and_o say_v i_o do_v not_o think_v i_o have_v have_v such_o nest_n of_o sin_n and_o lust_n in_o my_o soul_n and_o life_n job_n 36.7_o he_o withdraw_v not_o his_o eye_n from_o the_o righteous_a verse_n 8._o and_o if_o he_o be_v bind_v in_o fetter_n and_o be_v hold_v in_o cord_n of_o affliction_n than_o he_o show_v they_o their_o work_n and_o their_o transgression_n certain_o his_o soul_n will_v fall_v down_o upon_o the_o earth_n and_o be_v much_o discourage_v now_o i_o pray_v what_o be_v more_o the_o prerogative_n and_o peculiar_a of_o god_n than_o this_o to_o know_v who_o be_v a_o reprobate_n and_o who_o be_v not_o when_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v and_o grieve_v about_o his_o sin_n and_o he_o find_v that_o he_o have_v sin_v much_o against_o god_n and_o thereupon_o he_o conclude_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o reprobate_n be_v not_o this_o â—o_o come_v upon_o god_n prerogative_n the_o scripture_n tell_v a_o man_n indeed_o what_o he_o be_v for_o the_o present_a that_o a_o man_n for_o the_o present_a be_v a_o drunkard_n or_o a_o swearer_n or_o a_o sabbath-breaker_n or_o a_o adulterer_n and_o therefore_o the_o scripture_n tell_v he_o for_o the_o present_a that_o he_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n and_o under_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n but_o do_v the_o scripture_n tell_v he_o that_o he_o be_v a_o reprobate_n that_o he_o can_v never_o be_v convert_v and_o turn_v to_o god_n sure_o this_o be_v god_n great_a prerogative_n to_o know_v his_o secret_n which_o he_o reserve_v to_o himself_o and_o therefore_o when_o a_o man_n go_v to_o be_v humble_v before_o god_n and_o conclude_v o_o i_o be_o a_o reprobate_n and_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n for_o i_o and_o i_o shall_v never_o be_v convert_v this_o be_v to_o soar_v too_o high_a into_o god_n prerogative_n and_o he_o will_v burn_v his_o wing_n and_o he_o will_v fall_v down_o into_o great_a discouragement_n therefore_o in_o all_o your_o humiliation_n take_v heed_n that_o you_o do_v not_o fall_v upon_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v the_o peculiar_a and_o prerogative_n of_o god_n for_o than_o you_o will_v not_o be_v humble_v but_o discourage_v answ_n 5_o five_o the_o more_o you_o be_v humble_v and_o grieve_v by_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n free_a love_n and_o grace_n the_o more_o you_o will_v be_v humble_v and_o the_o less_o discourage_v when_o you_o come_v to_o humiliation_n you_o be_v humble_v because_o you_o have_v sin_v against_o god_n but_o how_o do_v you_o present_v this_o god_n to_o your_o own_o soul_n do_v you_o present_v he_o as_o a_o judge_n only_o or_o as_o a_o father_n also_o do_v you_o present_v the_o lord_n unto_o your_o soul_n only_o under_o the_o notion_n or_o attribute_n of_o his_o greatness_n or_o under_o the_o notion_n and_o attribute_n of_o his_o goodness_n also_o luther_n say_v thus_o when_o my_o heart_n be_v brisk_a and_o jolly_a i_o present_v god_n unto_o myself_o under_o the_o notion_n of_o his_o greatness_n but_o when_o my_o heart_n be_v low_a and_o fear_v than_o i_o present_v god_n to_o i_o under_o the_o notion_n of_o his_o goodness_n one_o while_o i_o consider_v christ_n as_o my_o example_n another_o while_n as_o my_o gift_n when_o my_o heart_n be_v too_o high_a than_o i_o consider_v christ_n as_o my_o example_n when_o my_o spirit_n be_v too_o low_a i_o consider_v christ_n as_o my_o gift_n so_o do_v you_o also_o i_o know_v you_o will_v say_v i_o can_v sometime_o present_v the_o lord_n unto_o my_o soul_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o a_o father_n because_o i_o have_v no_o assurance_n of_o his_o love_n yet_o you_o may_v consider_v the_o lord_n as_o gracious_a in_o himself_o as_o good_a in_o himself_o and_o love_v in_o himself_o and_o say_v i_o have_v thus_o and_o thus_o sin_v against_o a_o gracious_a god_n and_o although_o thou_o have_v not_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n to_o thou_o in_o particular_a yet_o if_o you_o can_v present_v god_n to_o your_o soul_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o his_o general_a goodness_n as_o good_a in_o himself_o you_o will_v never_o be_v discourage_v but_o be_v humble_v answ_n 6_o six_o and_o last_o if_o you_o will_v be_v true_o humble_v and_o not_o be_v discourage_v not_o discourage_v and_o yet_o humble_v then_o beat_v and_o drive_v up_o all_o your_o sin_n to_o your_o unbeleef_n and_o lay_v the_o stress_n and_o weight_n of_o all_o your_o sorrow_n upon_o that_o sin_n as_o in_o matter_n of_o thankfulness_n if_o a_o man_n do_v run_v up_o every_o mercy_n unto_o the_o fountain_n mercy_n the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n he_o will_v be_v most_o thankful_a so_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o humiliation_n if_o a_o man_n do_v run_v up_o every_o sin_n unto_o the_o fountain_n the_o head_n sin_n he_o will_v be_v most_o humble_v now_o what_o be_v the_o great_a sin_n the_o fountain_n sin_n the_o head_n sin_n of_o all_o your_o sin_n but_o unbelief_n and_o believe_v it_o he_o be_v never_o far_o from_o faith_n that_o be_v humble_v for_o his_o unbeleef_n and_o he_o will_v never_o be_v discourage_v that_o be_v not_o far_o from_o faith_n now_o therefore_o if_o at_o any_o time_n you_o find_v your_o soul_n in_o any_o sin_n then_o say_v this_o have_v my_o unbeleef_n do_v i_o do_v not_o think_v that_o i_o have_v have_v such_o a_o unbelieved_a heart_n o_o what_o a_o unbelieved_a heart_n have_v i_o this_o even_o all_o this_o sin_n have_v my_o unbeleef_n bring_v forth_o now_o the_o lord_n heal_v my_o unbelieved_a heart_n a_o soul_n grieve_v for_o unbeleef_n will_v never_o be_v discourage_v too_o much_o nor_o be_v humble_v too_o little_a he_o will_v be_v humble_v in_o truth_n for_o sin_n because_o he_o be_v humble_v for_o his_o unbeleef_n which_o be_v the_o mother_n sin_n yet_o he_o will_v not_o be_v discourage_v because_o he_o be_v humble_v for_o that_o which_o do_v cause_n all_o discouragement_n lay_v therefore_o the_o weight_n of_o your_o sorrow_n upon_o this_o sin_n and_o you_o shall_v be_v true_o humble_v without_o unjust_a discouragement_n and_o thus_o i_o have_v dispatch_v the_o first_o particular_a by_o all_o which_o you_o see_v that_o a_o gracious_a godly_a man_n though_o he_o have_v just_a cause_n for_o bedrid_a of_o a_o unbelieved_a heart_n you_o know_v a_o chaste_a and_o a_o love_a wife_n count_v it_o a_o affliction_n to_o she_o to_o be_v follow_v with_o the_o solicitation_n of_o a_o unworthy_a person_n to_o suspect_v and_o be_v jealous_a of_o her_o husband_n love_n for_o say_v she_o he_o do_v therefore_o follow_v i_o with_o these_o solicitation_n make_v i_o to_o suspect_v my_o husband_n love_n that_o so_o he_o may_v attain_v his_o own_o filthy_a desire_n so_o say_v a_o gracious_a soul_n the_o devil_n be_v always_o follow_v and_o tempt_v i_o to_o suspect_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n first_o link_n be_v the_o want_n of_o assurance_n if_o you_o shall_v see_v a_o child_n â—_o pretty_a child_n lie_v in_o the_o open_a street_n and_o none_o own_o it_o will_v it_o not_o make_v your_o a_o poor_a soul_n to_o lie_v in_o the_o street_n as_o it_o be_v and_o not_o know_v his_o father_n whether_o god_n be_v his_o father_n or_o the_o devil_n be_v his_o father_n for_o a_o soul_n to_o say_v i_o do_v not_o know_v my_o father_n whether_o god_n in_o christ_n be_v my_o father_n yea_o or_o no_o this_o be_v pitiful_a indeed_o the_o word_n father_n be_v a_o sweet_a word_n for_o it_o sweeten_v all_o our_o duty_n take_v the_o word_n father_n out_o of_o prayer_n and_o how_o sour_a be_v it_o sure_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o sad_a and_o sore_a affliction_n to_o want_v the_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n in_o christ_n but_o now_o although_o it_o be_v a_o great_a evil_n and_o a_o sore_a affliction_n for_o to_o want_v this_o assurance_n yet_o i_o say_v the_o saint_n and_o people_n of_o god_n have_v no_o reason_n to_o be_v cast_v down_o or_o discourage_v although_o they_o do_v want_v the_o same_o quest_n how_o may_v that_o appear_v answ_n 1_o first_o thus_o if_o the_o want_n of_o assurance_n be_v not_o the_o damn_v unbelief_n than_o a_o man_n have_v no_o reason_n to_o be_v quite_o discourage_v although_o he_o do_v want_v assurance_n now_o though_o there_o may_v be_v much_o unbelief_n bind_v up_o in_o the_o want_n of_o assurance_n yet_o i_o say_v the_o bare_a want_n of_o
they_o be_v much_o refresh_v and_o if_o they_o want_v they_o than_o they_o be_v much_o discourage_v and_o say_v ah_o christ_n love_v i_o not_o and_o god_n be_v go_v will_v return_v no_o more_o why_o because_o they_o measure_v god_n eternal_a love_n by_o some_o present_a dispensation_n but_o if_o god_n present_a dispensation_n may_v seem_v to_o run_v cross_a to_o his_o eternal_a purpose_n why_o then_o shall_v they_o be_v discourage_v and_o say_v he_o be_v go_v for_o ever_o now_o so_o it_o be_v he_o may_v hide_v his_o face_n he_o may_v withdraw_v and_o deny_v particular_a comfort_n and_o manifestation_n yet_o love_v i_o eternal_o o_o that_o people_n will_v not_o measure_v god_n eternal_a affection_n by_o some_o present_a dispensation_n so_o shall_v they_o never_o be_v much_o discourage_v answ_n 2_o second_o if_o you_o will_v not_o be_v discourage_v in_o this_o condition_n take_v heed_n of_o let_v fall_v any_o despair_a despondent_a unbelieved_a speech_n for_o the_o more_o busy_a satan_n be_v about_o you_o in_o the_o time_n of_o desertion_n the_o more_o tedious_a will_v that_o time_n be_v and_o more_o full_a of_o discouragement_n now_o look_v as_o it_o be_v with_o some_o dog_n if_o you_o let_v fall_v a_o bone_n or_o bread_n or_o meat_n the_o dog_n stay_v and_o wait_v still_o but_o when_o he_o find_v none_o he_o go_v his_o way_n so_o it_o be_v with_o satan_n when_o a_o man_n be_v in_o a_o desertion_n he_o come_v and_o say_v he_o this_o be_v a_o time_n for_o i_o to_o work_v who_o be_o the_o first-born_a child_n of_o darkness_n and_o this_o soul_n be_v in_o the_o dark_a it_o be_v a_o fit_a time_n for_o i_o to_o work_v upon_o he_o there_o he_o stand_v and_o if_o any_o despair_a despondent_a speech_n do_v fall_v from_o you_o satan_n stay_v the_o long_o but_o if_o none_o fall_v he_o go_v away_o the_o soon_o have_v you_o therefore_o be_v or_o be_v you_o under_o any_o desertion_n and_o let_v fall_v any_o bone_n for_o satan_n look_v back_o and_o gather_v they_o all_o up_o again_o gather_v up_o these_o crumb_n again_o and_o mourn_v over_o they_o and_o take_v heed_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v for_o the_o more_o of_o these_o fall_n the_o long_a satan_n stay_v and_o the_o more_o you_o will_v be_v discourage_v answ_n 3_o three_o be_v sure_a that_o you_o hear_v thing_n indifferent_o on_o both_o side_n there_o be_v two_o party_n plead_v in_o your_o soul_n in_o the_o time_n of_o desertion_n one_o that_o do_v plead_v for_o christ_n to_o maintain_v and_o bear_v up_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n in_o your_o heart_n say_v he_o be_v go_v indeed_o and_o he_o do_v hide_v his_o face_n but_o he_o will_v come_v again_o and_o shine_v upon_o you_o again_o there_o be_v another_o party_n that_o do_v plead_v the_o cause_n of_o satan_n against_o christ_n say_v he_o be_v now_o go_v and_o will_v return_v no_o more_o you_o shall_v never_o see_v his_o face_n again_o in_o this_o case_n be_v sure_a that_o you_o do_v hear_v thing_n indifferent_o and_o let_v not_o your_o ear_n be_v open_a to_o one_o and_o shut_v to_o the_o other_o he_o can_v never_o judge_v â—g_z hâ—ly_o that_o do_v not_o hear_v both_o party_n though_o it_o be_v no_o time_n to_o judge_n when_o you_o be_v under_o temptation_n and_o in_o the_o dark_a yet_o how_o frequent_o do_v poor_a soul_n judge_v themselves_o in_o this_o condition_n and_o even_o judge_v themselves_o to_o be_v under_o judgement_n why_o but_o because_o they_o harken_v more_o to_o one_o side_n than_o to_o the_o other_o if_o satan_n come_v and_o tell_v they_o a_o story_n of_o god_n displeasure_n they_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o hear_v that_o at_o large_a but_o if_o christ_n come_v and_o tell_v they_o a_o story_n of_o god_n love_n to_o sinner_n that_o they_o hear_v not_o or_o if_o they_o do_v yet_o as_o a_o man_n that_o read_v a_o book_n to_o confute_v it_o be_v dispute_v against_o what_o he_o read_v all_o along_o so_o be_v they_o also_o dispute_v against_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n all_o along_o as_o they_o hear_v they_o say_v in_o their_o heart_n o_o but_o this_o be_v not_o make_v to_o i_o it_o be_v a_o good_a promise_n but_o it_o belong_v not_o to_o i_o this_o be_v not_o my_o condition_n and_o a_o hundred_o such_o o_o butt_n but_o be_v this_o equal_a how_o be_v it_o possible_a but_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v misjudg_a and_o be_v much_o discourage_v when_o he_o hear_v thus_o wherefore_o my_o exhortation_n from_o the_o lord_n be_v which_o i_o beseech_v you_o in_o his_o name_n to_o receive_v never_o receive_v any_o relation_n from_o the_o law_n but_o be_v assure_v your_o
