to_o draw_v to_o its_o self_n that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o to_o cast_v away_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a therefore_o be_v these_o affection_n such_o as_o apprehend_v either_o good_a or_o evil_n to_o keep_v the_o one_o and_o to_o expel_v the_o other_o those_o that_o apprehend_v good_a if_o they_o see_v it_o and_o apprehend_v it_o they_o love_v and_o desire_v it_o and_o love_n desire_v to_o be_v unite_v to_o the_o thing_n love_v and_o a_o desire_n be_v a_o make_n towards_o the_o thing_n absent_a when_o the_o thing_n be_v present_a we_o joy_v in_o it_o when_o it_o be_v come_v towards_o we_o and_o there_o be_v a_o probability_n to_o have_v it_o then_o come_v hope_n in_o if_o we_o be_v like_a to_o miss_v of_o it_o then_o come_v fear_n if_o no_o probability_n of_o attain_v then_o come_v in_o despair_n if_o there_o be_v any_o impediment_n against_o reason_n and_o right_n than_o we_o be_v angry_a at_o it_o and_o this_o anger_n be_v a_o earnest_a desire_n to_o remove_v the_o impediment_n otherwise_o if_o we_o see_v reason_n and_o justice_n to_o the_o contrary_a than_o we_o be_v not_o proper_o angry_a these_o be_v the_o affection_n that_o be_v about_o good_a and_o these_o be_v the_o first_o kind_n of_o affection_n the_o 2._o sort_n of_o affection_n be_v those_o that_o be_v about_o evil_n as_o in_o the_o former_a there_o be_v love_n of_o god_n so_o here_o to_o turn_v away_o from_o evil_a be_v hatred_n if_o evil_a be_v come_v and_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o resist_v it_o we_o fear_v if_o we_o be_v able_a to_o overcome_v it_o then_o be_v we_o bold_a and_o confident_a if_o we_o be_v not_o able_a either_o to_o overcome_v or_o resist_v the_o evil_a we_o fly_v from_o it_o if_o it_o be_v unavoidable_o present_a we_o grieve_v at_o it_o but_o to_o handle_v they_o more_o several_o and_o so_o to_o know_v they_o as_o they_o have_v reference_n to_o good_a or_o evil_n for_o except_o we_o know_v they_o thus_o it_o be_v worth_a nothing_o to_o we_o there_o be_v therefore_o three_o sort_n of_o affection_n natural_a affection_n carnal_a and_o spiritual_a first_o natural_a these_o affection_n arise_v from_o nature_n and_o tend_v to_o natural_a object_n as_o for_o example_n to_o desire_v meat_n and_o drink_n be_v natural_a but_o to_o desire_v it_o in_o excess_n be_v not_o natural_a because_o the_o object_n of_o natural_a affection_n be_v limit_v by_o nature_n namely_o so_o much_o and_o no_o more_o nature_n have_v certain_a measure_n and_o extent_n and_o limit_n and_o those_o she_o exceed_v not_o natural_a affection_n make_v we_o but_o even_o with_o beast_n second_o there_o be_v carnal_a affection_n which_o be_v lust_n that_o arise_v from_o the_o corruption_n of_o nature_n and_o those_o tend_v to_o evil_a object_n or_o good_a object_n in_o a_o evil_a manner_n those_o affection_n make_v we_o worse_o than_o the_o beast_n like_v unto_o the_o devil_n joh._n 8._o 44._o you_o be_v of_o your_o father_n the_o devil_n and_o his_o lust_n you_o will_v do_v that_o be_v those_o that_o have_v these_o lust_n be_v as_o like_o the_o devil_n as_o the_o son_n be_v like_o the_o father_n those_o that_o be_v bind_v with_o these_o bond_n be_v like_o he_o that_o be_v they_o come_v in_o a_o degree_n to_o the_o corruption_n the_o devil_n have_v in_o a_o great_a degree_n three_o spiritual_a affection_n be_v such_o as_o arise_v from_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v from_o the_o renew_n part_n of_o man_n and_o tend_v to_o good_a object_n in_o a_o holy_a manner_n natural_a make_v we_o no_o better_o than_o beast_n carnal_a than_o devil_n spiritual_a make_v we_o better_o than_o man_n like_v to_o god_n have_v his_o image_n new_o stamp_v on_o we_o they_o lift_v we_o up_o above_o man_n and_o make_v we_o like_a to_o angel_n thus_o you_o see_v the_o 3._o kind_n of_o affection_n in_o man_n we_o must_v only_o answer_v one_o question_n before_o we_o go_v any_o further_o the_o question_n be_v this_o whether_o there_o be_v no_o spiritual_a affection_n except_o they_o proceed_v from_o a_o general_a disposition_n because_o many_o man_n seem_v to_o have_v good_a flash_n now_o and_o then_o and_o so_o seem_v to_o be_v regenerate_v i_o answer_v no_o they_o be_v not_o spiritual_a regenerate_v affection_n because_o these_o affection_n in_o the_o soul_n howsoever_o they_o be_v good_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o author_n the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o put_v they_o in_o be_v not_o so_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o subject_n man_n who_o be_v yet_o in_o corruption_n and_o not_o renew_v if_o a_o man_n have_v never_o so_o much_o skill_n in_o music_n if_o the_o instrument_n be_v out_o of_o tune_n the_o music_n can_v be_v good_a so_o the_o affection_n as_o the_o spirit_n suggestion_n be_v good_a but_o in_o a_o carnal_a man_n they_o be_v as_o in_o a_o instrument_n out_o of_o tune_n it_o be_v true_a that_o those_o flash_n make_v way_n to_o conversion_n but_o only_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v in_o tune_n and_o in_o a_o good_a frame_n then_o be_v the_o affection_n good_a that_o be_v then_o only_o effective_o good_a so_o as_o to_o make_v the_o heart_n good_a and_o then_o the_o fruit_n will_v be_v good_a such_o as_o god_n will_v accept_v so_o much_o to_o show_v what_o affection_n be_v now_o we_o be_v to_o show_v when_o they_o be_v inordinate_a but_o first_o know_v the_o affection_n be_v place_v in_o the_o soul_n for_o inordinate_a the_o safeguard_n of_o it_o that_o be_v to_o give_v the_o watchword_n that_o we_o may_v repel_v evil_a when_o it_o be_v come_v those_o that_o be_v about_o good_a to_o open_v the_o door_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o let_v it_o in_o and_o to_o make_v out_o for_o it_o if_o it_o be_v want_v as_o guide_n that_o be_v for_o the_o service_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o put_v we_o on_o to_o work_v and_o to_o be_v more_o earnest_n in_o our_o action_n they_o bring_v aptness_n and_o diligence_n in_o do_v when_o they_o miss_v these_o end_n than_o they_o hinder_v we_o in_o stead_n of_o profit_v we_o hurt_v we_o in_o stead_n of_o help_v we_o carry_v we_o to_o evil_a object_n in_o stead_n of_o good_a than_o they_o be_v inordinate_a either_o in_o the_o manner_n or_o the_o end_n this_o premise_a now_o that_o we_o may_v further_o know_v they_o when_o they_o be_v inordinate_a observe_v these_o 2._o thing_n first_o examine_v they_o by_o the_o rule_n which_o be_v the_o main_a way_n of_o trial_n if_o they_o go_v beside_o the_o rule_n they_o be_v inordinate_a the_o first_o rule_n be_v that_o the_o object_n must_v be_v good_a 1._o else_o the_o affection_n be_v inordinate_a there_o must_v be_v love_n of_o god_n sorrow_n for_o sin_n delight_n in_o god_n than_o it_o be_v good_a but_o on_o the_o contrary_a to_o disgrace_v holiness_n to_o condemn_v excellency_n in_o other_o to_o hate_v that_o we_o shall_v a_o touchstone_n in_o himself_o that_o be_v he_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o discern_v whereby_o he_o make_v trial_n of_o grace_n and_o lay_n hold_v on_o those_o which_o will_v endure_v the_o touch_n those_o he_o will_v receive_v as_o spiritual_a the_o other_o which_o will_v not_o he_o cast_v out_o as_o counterfeit_v therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v 1_o cor._n 2._o 9_o the_o eye_n have_v not_o see_v nor_o the_o ear_n hear_v neither_o have_v enter_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n the_o thing_n that_o god_n have_v prepare_v for_o they_o that_o love_v he_o that_o be_v he_o be_v not_o able_a then_o it_o may_v be_v he_o may_v not_o find_v that_o love_n of_o god_n in_o his_o heart_n but_o this_o sense_n of_o the_o want_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n be_v but_o for_o a_o time_n it_o the_o vent_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o by_o they_o you_o may_v see_v what_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n if_o grace_n be_v there_o the_o speech_n s_o will_v favour_v of_o it_o as_o a_o cask_n will_v taste_v of_o that_o which_o be_v in_o it_o but_o you_o will_v say_v the_o heart_n be_v of_o a_o great_a depth_n

base_a esteem_n of_o they_o and_o from_o a_o base_a esteem_v of_o earthly_a thing_n unto_o a_o high_a esteem_n of_o they_o this_o be_v earthly_a mindedness_n but_o for_o the_o better_a explain_v of_o this_o point_n first_o we_o will_v show_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v earthly_a mind_v second_o what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v heavenly_a mind_v for_o the_o first_o what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v earthly_a mind_v it_o be_v to_o mind_n earthly_a thing_n or_o heavenly_a thing_n in_o a_o earthly_a mind_v manner_n that_o be_v when_o the_o soul_n be_v deprave_v so_o of_o spiritual_a life_n that_o it_o look_v upon_o grace_n and_o salvation_n with_o a_o carnal_a eye_n when_o it_o be_v represent_v unto_o it_o because_o it_o be_v but_o natural_a it_o be_v not_o enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n now_o till_o a_o unto_o his_o nature_n but_o nature_n can_v look_v no_o further_o for_o this_o be_v the_o property_n of_o nature_n it_o go_v all_o by_o the_o outward_a sense_n and_o appetite_n and_o no_o man_n can_v apply_v spiritual_a thing_n by_o the_o sense_n but_o earthly_a thing_n second_o by_o the_o affection_n a_o man_n may_v conceive_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n for_o the_o affection_n be_v the_o proper_a seat_n 2_o of_o love_n and_o a_o man_n be_v endue_v with_o love_n may_v be_v affect_v with_o heavenly_a thing_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v sweet_a unto_o nature_n and_o hence_o may_v arise_v fear_n of_o lose_v they_o not_o because_o they_o be_v heavenly_a thing_n but_o because_o they_o be_v sweet_a unto_o his_o nature_n beside_o the_o affection_n may_v restrain_v he_o and_o turn_v he_o from_o esteem_v of_o thing_n base_a to_o a_o esteem_v of_o thing_n that_o be_v more_o excellent_a and_o yet_o be_v but_o earthly_a mind_v for_o it_o be_v not_o the_o affection_n to_o good_a that_o prove_v a_o man_n to_o be_v good_a but_o it_o be_v the_o rice_n of_o the_o affection_n that_o be_v the_o ground_n from_o whence_o they_o spring_v namely_o from_o a_o heart_n enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n herod_n may_v affect_v john_n and_o johns_n doctrine_n but_o this_o be_v not_o breed_v by_o the_o spirit_n but_o a_o carnal_a affection_n three_o by_o the_o understanding_n or_o mind_n a_o man_n may_v come_v to_o conceive_v of_o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a thing_n renew_v his_o mind_n may_v be_v enlighten_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o they_o and_o yet_o be_v but_o earthly_a mind_v as_o for_o example_n first_o he_o may_v see_v a_o virtue_n in_o heavenly_a thing_n above_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n he_o may_v conceive_v of_o they_o 1_o by_o look_v into_o they_o so_o that_o a_o virtue_n and_o power_n may_v appear_v in_o they_o excel_v every_o virtue_n in_o any_o thing_n else_o and_o yet_o not_o renew_v second_o if_o he_o be_v of_o a_o more_o noble_a spirit_n he_o may_v do_v good_a either_o for_o church_n or_o commonwealth_n 2_o he_o may_v be_v very_o liberal_a and_o bountiful_a unto_o any_o that_o shall_v seek_v unto_o he_o in_o this_o kind_n and_o hereupon_o may_v five_o he_o may_v feel_v the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o promise_n 5_o of_o remission_n of_o sin_n justification_n and_o reconciliation_n and_o rejoice_v in_o they_o as_o herod_n hear_v john_n glad_o the_o mind_n be_v earthly_a dispose_v the_o will_n and_o affection_n can_v go_v no_o further_o than_o the_o mind_n guide_v they_o every_o faculty_n have_v a_o appetite_n and_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o man_n have_v a_o understanding_n which_o govern_v now_o look_v what_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n love_v or_o hate_v that_o the_o will_n will_v or_o will_v not_o for_o the_o will_n be_v but_o the_o their_o light_n and_o splendour_n so_o man_n be_v say_v to_o lose_v their_o excellency_n when_o they_o give_v way_n unto_o their_o lust_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v first_o because_o when_o the_o mind_n affect_v earthly_a thing_n it_o mingle_v together_o two_o contrary_n 1_o grace_n and_o christ_n with_o sin_n and_o the_o world_n and_o so_o eclipse_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o one_o with_o the_o baseness_n of_o the_o other_o as_o when_o gold_n and_o dross_n be_v mingle_v the_o baseness_n of_o the_o one_o do_v corrupt_v the_o other_o simile_n so_o as_o the_o excellency_n thereof_o do_v not_o appear_v but_o mingle_v gold_n with_o silver_n or_o let_v it_o be_v alone_o and_o then_o it_o keep_v his_o excellency_n and_o be_v not_o eclipse_v even_o so_o when_o a_o man_n be_v earthly_a mind_v and_o his_o affection_n be_v set_v upon_o base_a object_n with_o that_o enlighten_v knowledge_n he_o have_v he_o mingle_v a_o ignoble_a and_o base_a object_n together_o and_o so_o lose_v the_o excellency_n of_o it_o now_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o can_v make_v a_o man_n to_o lose_v his_o excellency_n but_o sin_n for_o other_o thing_n that_o happen_v unto_o a_o man_n excellency_n be_v not_o able_a to_o take_v away_o his_o excellency_n as_o reproach_n and_o imprisonment_n in_o the_o world_n for_o a_o man_n may_v keep_v himself_o heavenly_a mind_v for_o all_o the_o reproach_n and_o imprisonment_n that_o he_o shall_v meet_v withal_o if_o he_o can_v keep_v out_o sin_n all_o other_o thing_n be_v unto_o he_o but_o as_o a_o candle_n in_o a_o dark_a night_n which_o make_v a_o man_n this_o snare_n they_o never_o rest_v turn_v themselves_o from_o one_o sin_n unto_o another_o till_o at_o last_o they_o destroy_v themselves_o second_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o hateful_a and_o offensive_a unto_o god_n then_o when_o a_o man_n be_v earthly_a mind_a earthly-mindednesse_a for_o when_o a_o man_n be_v earthly_a mind_v he_o set_v up_o idolatry_n in_o his_o heart_n i_o speak_v not_o of_o the_o bodily_a prostration_n howsoever_o in_o time_n it_o may_v be_v he_o will_v be_v such_o a_o one_o but_o i_o speak_v of_o covetousness_n that_o spiritual_a idolatry_n of_o the_o heart_n as_o the_o apostle_n call_v it_o which_o be_v when_o the_o heart_n be_v once_o sot_v with_o these_o earthly_a thing_n that_o it_o draw_v all_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n after_o they_o so_o that_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n become_v a_o burden_n unto_o he_o now_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n more_o odious_a unto_o god_n than_o to_o be_v a_o idolater_n for_o he_o be_v a_o profess_v religion_n to_o fall_v from_o his_o religion_n unto_o profaneness_n and_o to_o the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n this_o be_v most_o odious_a unto_o god_n this_o god_n hate_v with_o a_o deadly_a hatred_n this_o be_v a_o despise_n of_o god_n and_o a_o trample_n under_o foot_n the_o blood_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v nothing_o for_o a_o profane_a man_n that_o have_v not_o give_v his_o nature_n benefit_n but_o for_o god_n to_o do_v he_o honour_n that_o be_v the_o right_a end_n for_o to_o mortify_v be_v to_o rectify_v and_o to_o bring_v thing_n that_o be_v out_o of_o compass_n to_o rule_v to_o see_v where_o they_o be_v inordinate_a and_o so_o to_o turn_v carnal_a and_o natural_a affection_n all_o into_o spitituall_a in_o the_o next_o place_n we_o will_v see_v some_o reason_n why_o mortify_v they_o be_v to_o be_v mortify_v for_o reason_n do_v wonderful_o persuade_v and_o necessity_n of_o mortify_v once_o apprehend_v make_v man_n go_v about_o it_o let_v we_o but_o consider_v of_o what_o moment_n it_o be_v to_o have_v they_o mortify_v what_o ill_a if_o we_o do_v not_o what_o good_a if_o we_o do_v the_o first_o reason_n be_v because_o affection_n be_v action_n of_o the_o great_a efficacy_n and_o command_n in_o the_o soul_n 1._o they_o be_v exceed_o powerful_a they_o be_v the_o wheel_n or_o sail_n which_o carry_v the_o soul_n this_o way_n or_o that_o way_n in_o that_o regard_n because_o they_o be_v so_o effectual_a and_o prevalent_a therefore_o it_o concern_v we_o the_o more_o to_o take_v care_n that_o we_o rectify_v they_o time_n be_v when_o affection_n do_v obey_v the_o will_n and_o the_o will_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o the_o time_n of_o innocency_n but_o now_o that_o subordination_n be_v take_v away_o and_o that_o union_n dissolve_v and_o now_o the_o affection_n move_v the_o heart_n as_o the_o wind_n the_o sea_n whether_o it_o will_v or_o no_o therefore_o it_o stand_v you_o upon_o to_o keep_v they_o under_o a_o mettle_a horse_n be_v a_o delight_n to_o the_o rider_n if_o he_o be_v keep_v under_o simil._n the_o bridle_n so_o the_o affection_n if_o they_o be_v good_a the_o strong_a the_o better_o but_o the_o
