of_o the_o same_o earth_n so_o they_o be_v a_o kin_n and_o bear_v a_o natural_a affection_n to_o one_o another_o though_o in_o this_o hide_a state_n even_o in_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n both_o the_o relation_n and_o affection_n be_v much_o unknown_a there_o be_v a_o universal_a love_n among_o all_o creature_n even_o there_o where_o there_o appear_v a_o antipathy_n from_o some_o general_a likeness_n suitableness_n and_o connaturalness_n among_o they_o but_o this_o love_n be_v more_o especial_o to_o be_v discern_v and_o take_v notice_n of_o among_o creature_n of_o the_o same_o kind_n this_o love_n be_v heighten_v in_o man_n above_o all_o other_o creature_n according_a to_o the_o elevation_n of_o his_o nature_n it_o be_v a_o stamp_n upon_o his_o soul_n suitable_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o his_o soul_n it_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o more_o spiritual_a glue_n in_o he_o as_o his_o nature_n be_v more_o spiritual_a whereas_o it_o be_v but_o a_o corporeal_a glue_n in_o other_o creature_n a_o tincture_n whereof_o still_o remain_v though_o much_o deface_v in_o he_o by_o his_o fall_n as_o all_o his_o other_o excellency_n of_o nature_n be_v the_o supernatural_a love_n be_v that_o which_o grow_v in_o god_n own_o heart_n and_o which_o he_o write_v with_o his_o own_o finger_n on_o the_o heart_n of_o who_o he_o please_v and_o in_o what_o degree_n he_o please_v it_o be_v that_o love_n of_o a_o spiritual_a nature_n which_o flow_v from_o god_n the_o root_n into_o christ_n the_o spiritual_a man_n and_o so_o through_o he_o into_o all_o the_o spiritual_a branch_n which_o sow_o or_o can_v natural_o grow_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n there_o be_v all_o kind_n of_o natural_a excellency_n which_o be_v the_o shadow_n of_o the_o spiritual_a in_o man_n natural_o they_o be_v sow_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o first_o adam_n as_o the_o spiritual_a excellency_n be_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o second_o adam_n there_o be_v a_o natural_a faith_n in_o man_n whereby_o man_n be_v able_a to_o believe_v upon_o good_a argument_n lay_v before_o he_o but_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o the_o faith_n this_o be_v not_o the_o heavenly_a gift_n so_o there_o be_v a_o natural_a they_o love_n must_v quicken_v and_o give_v vent_n to_o faith_n work_v by_o love_n love_n as_o it_o be_v general_o serviceable_a and_o profitable_a so_o especial_o to_o fellow-saint_n and_o to_o they_o it_o can_v but_o be_v profitable_a what_o ever_o they_o be_v where_o ever_o they_o be_v how_o ever_o it_o be_v with_o they_o be_v they_o weak_a or_o strong_a stand_v or_o fall_v sweet_a or_o sullen_a in_o their_o spirit_n any_o other_o way_n right_o temper_v or_o distemper_v how_o ever_o incline_v or_o act_v love_v right_o go_v forth_o towards_o they_o be_v very_o fit_a to_o do_v they_o occasion_n from_o all_o their_o unloveliness_n to_o stir_v up_o his_o heart_n to_o act_n of_o love_n towards_o they_o suitable_a to_o that_o their_o state_n but_o never_o to_o decline_v thereby_o from_o they_o here_o be_v love_n indeed_o it_o will_v be_v too_o tedious_a to_o instance_n in_o the_o several_a act_n in_o the_o several_a kind_n of_o it_o as_o in_o pity_n in_o care_n in_o bounty_n that_o his_o love_n at_o least_o decline_v whereas_o there_o be_v heart-working_n of_o love_n in_o christ_n which_o they_o can_v perceive_v but_o only_o know_v by_o faith_n that_o they_o must_v appear_v in_o the_o view_n of_o sense_n to_o what_o end_n have_v god_n give_v they_o faith_n if_o they_o notwithstanding_o esteem_v of_o thing_n by_o and_o according_a to_o sense_n but_o what_o ever_o condition_n they_o be_v in_o though_o christ_n love_n may_v not_o discover_v itself_o to_o they_o in_o the_o way_n they_o expect_v and_o desire_v yet_o it_o always_o go_v forth_o in_o the_o most_o thing_n in_o they_o hardly_o any_o thing_n lovely_a but_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n and_o common_o that_o also_o cover_v with_o much_o unloveliness_n there_o be_v likewise_o usual_o that_o in_o this_o object_n of_o love_n which_o most_o set_v off_o the_o act_n of_o faith_n what_o be_v it_o most_o commend_v the_o act_n of_o faith_n but_o its_o duration_n and_o activity_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o that_o which_o be_v contrary_a and_o dangerous_a to_o it_o as_o when_o god_n distress_v the_o soul_n appear_v as_o a_o enemy_n seem_v even_o to_o kill_v faith_n itself_o take_v away_o all_o unloveliness_n of_o their_o own_o appear_v amid_o a_o little_a loveliness_n of_o grace_n yea_o and_o perhaps_o that_o little_a grace_n hide_v too_o and_o nothing_o but_o corruption_n visible_a so_o spirit_n he_o have_v already_o fill_v love_n quest_n but_o how_o may_v i_o attain_v this_o duty_n i_o find_v my_o spirit_n much_o inflame_v with_o it_o o_o that_o i_o may_v be_v a_o little_a guide_v to_o it_o ans_fw-fr if_o thou_o be_v not_o better_o provide_v apply_v thyself_o to_o the_o observation_n of_o these_o few_o direction_n 1._o set_a this_o duty_n clear_o before_o thy_o eye_n consider_v well_o what_o kind_n of_o love_n it_o must_v be_v upon_o what_o ground_n it_o be_v to_o be_v fasten_v and_o carry_v on_o in_o what_o degree_n what_o must_v be_v the_o act_n of_o it_o and_o in_o what_o manner_n it_o be_v to_o act_v christian_n common_o do_v not_o understand_v what_o they_o do_v when_o they_o buckle_v to_o this_o duty_n nor_o how_o pure_o and_o firm_o this_o affection_n must_v move_v notwithstanding_o all_o manner_n of_o discouragement_n from_o they_o we_o love_v which_o can_v but_o cause_v they_o much_o to_o falter_v in_o the_o performance_n of_o it_o 2._o be_v work_v up_o thy_o heart_n to_o it_o daily_o be_v work_v it_o up_o to_o a_o spiritual_a love_n be_v work_v spiritual_a ground_n into_o thy_o heart_n that_o thy_o spirit_n may_v be_v engage_v and_o move_v spiritual_o thou_o must_v be_v a_o kind_n of_o husbandman_n to_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o life_n of_o god_n in_o thou_o thou_o must_v receive_v it_o thou_o must_v cherish_v it_o and_o thou_o must_v provoke_v it_o unto_o motion_n this_o thou_o must_v be_v do_v though_o thou_o can_v not_o do_v this_o nor_o any_o thing_n else_o that_o be_v spiritual_a wonderful_o strange_a and_o mysterious_a be_v the_o operation_n of_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n he_o work_v all_o in_o we_o of_o his_o own_o pleasure_n and_o yet_o so_o as_o if_o we_o move_v and_o wrought_v all_o ourselves_o the_o lord_n lie_v hide_v in_o all_o the_o motion_n of_o our_o spirit_n and_o by_o a_o unseen_a strength_n virtue_n and_o influence_n do_v all_o there_o yea_o even_o that_o which_o we_o seem_v to_o do_v ourselves_o and_o yet_o we_o must_v up_o and_o be_v do_v every_o thing_n though_o we_o can_v do_v nothing_o 3._o entreat_v god_n to_o write_v this_o law_n in_o thy_o bowel_n god_n write_v it_o in_o christ_n heart_n and_o he_o must_v also_o write_v it_o in_o thou_o if_o ever_o it_o be_v find_v there_o therefore_o pray_v to_o god_n to_o write_v it_o there_o and_o to_o write_v it_o there_o abundant_o that_o as_o he_o have_v bid_v thou_o love_v all_o saint_n so_o he_o will_v give_v thou_o love_v large_a enough_o to_o go_v forth_o full_o towards_o all_o saint_n we_o must_v be_v teach_v of_o god_n to_o love_v one_o this_o be_v in_o do_v go_v to_o god_n in_o who_o all_o our_o strength_n lie_v to_o perform_v it_o in_o we_o and_o this_o we_o may_v do_v at_o first_o if_o we_o be_v but_o sensible_a enough_o of_o our_o own_o weakness_n without_o a_o practical_a experiment_n but_o therefore_o god_n put_v we_o continual_o upon_o endeavour_v ourselves_o because_o we_o forget_v how_o weak_a and_o unable_a we_o be_v to_o do_v any_o thing_n any_o long_a than_o we_o find_v it_o in_o our_o utmost_a strive_n go_v therefore_o to_o god_n who_o have_v promise_v not_o only_o to_o write_v his_o law_n in_o our_o heart_n but_o to_o cause_v we_o to_o walk_v in_o his_o way_n what_o ever_o way_n of_o god_n there_o be_v god_n will_v not_o only_o write_v the_o law_n of_o it_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n but_o he_o will_v make_v they_o walk_v in_o it_o he_o will_v put_v such_o affection_n and_o strength_n into_o they_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o forbear_v walk_v therein_o quest_n but_o be_v there_o no_o help_n which_o may_v further_o i_o herein_o those_o which_o be_v skilful_o practical_a know_v how_o to_o lead_v another_o into_o that_o path_n wherein_o they_o themselves_o have_v walk_v if_o you_o have_v meet_v with_o any_o knowledge_n or_o experience_n in_o this_o kind_n o_o do_v not_o hide_v it_o from_o we_o but_o help_v we_o a_o little_a in_o this_o tract_n which_o be_v so_o auk_n and_o difficult_a to_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n ans_fw-fr what_o i_o have_v find_v most_o beneficial_a unto_o and_o powerful_a with_o myself_o herein_o i_o shall_v very_o willing_o impart_v unto_o you_o in_o who_o this_o desire_n be_v kindle_v therefore_o from_o my_o own_o proof_n and_o experience_n i_o shall_v commend_v unto_o you_o these_o four_o help_n 1._o will_v you_o love_v the_o saint_n as_o christ_n have_v love_v both_o they_o and_o you_o then_o in_o the_o first_o place_n look_v upon_o they_o in_o christ_n and_o there_o thou_o shall_v ever_o see_v they_o full_a to_o make_v they_o unlovely_a in_o thy_o eye_n but_o for_o a_o design_n which_o god_n have_v for_o his_o own_o glory_n the_o good_a of_o all_o saint_n and_o thou_o in_o particular_a if_o a_o pure_a spiritual_a eye_n be_v always_o thus_o fasten_v upon_o they_o a_o pure_a spiritual_a heart_n will_v always_o love_v they_o 2._o expect_v all_o manner_n of_o weakness_n and_o imperfection_n in_o they_o look_v for_o distemper_n upon_o they_o and_o all_o manner_n of_o evil_n break_v forth_o and_o take_v its_o swinge_n in_o they_o so_o far_o as_o god_n leave_v they_o do_v thou_o not_o find_v it_o so_o in_o thy_o own_o heart_n this_o be_v another_o mean_n whereby_o god_n strengthen_v his_o heart_n in_o love_v we_o he_o expect_v no_o manner_n of_o good_a from_o we_o but_o what_o he_o himself_o work_v in_o we_o he_o expect_v all_o manner_n of_o evil_n and_o distemper_n which_o he_o himself_o do_v not_o prevent_v and_o all_o the_o evil_a that_o issue_v forth_o he_o attribute_v not_o to_o we_o but_o to_o sin_n that_o dwell_v in_o we_o why_o go_v thou_o and_o do_v likewise_o and_o thou_o will_v love_v as_o god_n love_v paul_n do_v thus_o concern_v himself_o the_o good_a i_o will_v do_v i_o can_v nor_o avoid_v the_o evil_n which_o i_o will_v not_o do_v but_o what_o i_o hate_v that_o do_v i_o oh_o wretched_a man_n etc._n etc._n i_o can_v expect_v no_o good_a from_o myself_o i_o can_v hinder_v no_o evil_a in_o myself_o but_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o i_o but_o sin_n that_o dwell_v in_o i_o it_o be_v the_o unlovely_a part_n that_o which_o i_o be_o to_o hate_v not_o that_o which_o i_o be_o to_o love_v which_o do_v this_o there_o be_v two_o great_a fault_n in_o we_o we_o do_v not_o labour_n enough_o to_o be_v holy_a ourselves_o and_o we_o expect_v it_o too_o much_o in_o other_o if_o we_o do_v look_v for_o holiness_n more_o in_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o expect_v it_o less_o in_o other_o this_o duty_n will_v be_v far_o easy_a than_o it_o be_v but_o when_o we_o expect_v much_o what_o ever_o fall_v short_a of_o our_o expectation_n displease_v we_o and_o
damp_v our_o affection_n 3._o be_v ever_o stir_v up_o their_o grace_n in_o they_o and_o mark_v the_o working_n of_o their_o grace_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o their_o distemper_n this_o will_v still_o keep_v thy_o eye_n upon_o their_o loveliness_n at_o all_o time_n and_o so_o will_v still_o draw_v forth_o love_v towards_o they_o 1._o be_v ever_o stir_v up_o their_o grace_n in_o they_o grace_n be_v the_o proper_a attractive_a of_o spiritual_a love_n the_o sight_n whereof_o can_v but_o kindle_v it_o thus_o christ_n make_v the_o flower_n and_o spice_n in_o his_o garden_n to_o yield_v their_o savour_n and_o then_o fall_v in_o love_n with_o their_o scent_n we_o think_v it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o other_o to_o give_v forth_o their_o light_n and_o discover_v their_o grace_n to_o we_o but_o we_o be_v apt_a to_o forget_v that_o it_o be_v also_o our_o duty_n to_o be_v draw_v forth_o their_o light_n and_o stir_v up_o their_o grace_n this_o be_v paul_n practice_n that_o great_a lover_n of_o the_o saint_n rom._n 1.11_o &_o 12._o for_o i_o long_o to_o see_v you_o that_o i_o may_v impart_v unto_o you_o some_o spiritual_a gift_n to_o the_o end_n you_o may_v be_v establish_v that_o be_v that_o i_o may_v be_v comfort_v together_o with_o you_o by_o the_o mutual_a faith_n both_o of_o you_o and_o i_o this_o be_v his_o design_n and_o course_n when_o ever_o he_o come_v among_o saint_n to_o see_v what_o grace_n they_o have_v in_o they_o to_o search_v out_o and_o stir_v up_o grace_n that_o he_o may_v draw_v forth_o his_o own_o love_n in_o enjoy_v of_o they_o in_o delight_v in_o they_o and_o in_o add_v somewhat_o to_o they_o suitable_a to_o their_o state_n and_o condition_n 2._o observe_v the_o working_n of_o their_o grace_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o their_o distemper_n we_o be_v usual_o exceed_o faulty_a in_o this_o we_o never_o consider_v the_o distemper_n in_o christian_n but_o look_v they_o shall_v always_o act_v as_o if_o they_o be_v in_o a_o right_a temper_n though_o we_o expect_v they_o shall_v consider_v our_o distemper_n and_o then_o in_o their_o distemper_n we_o mark_v the_o stir_n of_o their_o corruption_n but_o though_o grace_n strive_v and_o help_n much_o to_o the_o keep_n of_o they_o down_o we_o take_v little_a notice_n of_o that_o whereas_o god_n consider_v the_o least_o distemper_n in_o we_o and_o cherish_v and_o be_v delight_v with_o the_o least_o motion_n of_o grace_n in_o we_o in_o our_o distemper_n if_o it_o be_v otherwise_o what_o will_v become_v of_o we_o 4._o consider_v thy_o own_o weakness_n and_o sin_n do_v any_o evil_a befall_v thy_o brother_n which_o thou_o can_v avoid_v do_v thy_o brother_n neglect_v any_o good_a which_o thou_o can_v do_v he_o have_v fall_v into_o this_o or_o that_o evil_n who_o have_v keep_v thy_o heart_n how_o long_o will_v thou_o keep_v out_o of_o the_o same_o evil_n into_o which_o thy_o brother_n be_v fall_v if_o god_n leave_v thou_o to_o the_o same_o temptation_n consider_v therefore_o the_o break_n forth_o of_o thy_o own_o heart_n in_o sin_n where_o god_n do_v suffer_v it_o and_o how_o far_o it_o will_v break_v forth_o if_o god_n do_v not_o hinder_v it_o and_o take_v heed_n of_o murmur_v against_o thy_o brother_n as_o one_o that_o fall_v into_o sin_n breed_v trouble_n hinder_v mercy_n interrupt_v the_o sweetness_n of_o communion_n etc._n etc._n there_o be_v a_o very_a notable_a place_n to_o this_o purpose_n jam._n 5.9_o groan_v not_o one_o against_o another_o brethren_n lest_o you_o be_v condemn_v behold_v the_o judge_n stand_v before_o the_o door_n our_o spirit_n will_v be_v very_o apt_a to_o groan_v one_o against_o another_o o_o such_o a_o one_o have_v hinder_v much_o good_a if_o it_o have_v not_o be_v for_o he_o thing_n may_v have_v go_v well_o take_v heed_n the_o judge_n stand_v at_o the_o door_n who_o will_v come_v and_o rip_v open_a thy_o heart_n and_o thy_o way_n and_o show_v thou_o somewhat_o which_o thou_o little_a think_v of_o and_o so_o thou_o who_o groane_v against_o another_o will_v be_v condemn_v thyself_o nay_o though_o thou_o have_v speak_v to_o they_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o he_o carry_v it_o vers_n 10._o and_o they_o may_v seem_v to_o have_v despise_v thy_o message_n nay_o have_v real_o both_o despise_v thou_o and_o the_o lord_n in_o who_o name_n thou_o have_v speak_v yet_o take_v heed_n of_o so_o much_o as_o groan_v against_o they_o lest_o the_o judge_n also_o find_v matter_n against_o thou_o it_o be_v not_o fit_a for_o one_o guilty_a person_n to_o breathe_v out_o complaint_n against_o another_o therefore_o consider_v thy_o own_o heart_n well_o and_o observe_v the_o fail_n there_o be_v there_o not_o more_o there_o then_o in_o thy_o brother_n all_o thing_n consider_v and_o consider_v if_o thou_o will_v be_v willing_a to_o have_v christ_n withdraw_v his_o heart_n from_o thou_o or_o whether_o thou_o will_v have_v he_o take_v occasion_n hereby_o to_o exercise_v towards_o thou_o such_o act_n of_o love_n as_o thy_o need_n now_o require_v as_o to_o pity_v thou_o to_o stand_v ready_a to_o help_v thou_o to_o take_v that_o course_n which_o may_v best_o help_v thou_o etc._n etc._n if_o so_o go_v and_o do_v to_o the_o keep_n of_o that_o law_n of_o love_n which_o he_o have_v give_v thou_o concern_v thy_o fellow-saint_n and_o this_o be_v his_o commandment_n that_o we_o love_v one_o another_o as_o he_o have_v love_v we_o now_o for_o a_o close_a that_o he_o that_o read_v may_v understand_v all_o this_o be_v but_o a_o exercise_n by_o way_n of_o discipline_n to_o the_o seed_n in_o its_o childhood_n as_o indeed_o all_o other_o thing_n also_o be_v the_o threaten_n the_o reward_n the_o promise_n the_o comfort_n the_o enjoyment_n etc._n etc._n in_o every_o dispensation_n be_v suit_v to_o the_o state_n of_o the_o child_n when_o the_o day_n dawn_v the_o shadow_n will_v fly_v away_o when_o truth_n appear_v that_o which_o do_v represent_v it_o as_o a_o image_n of_o it_o must_v give_v place_n yet_o these_o image_n or_o representation_n be_v not_o such_o as_o either_o satan_n or_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n frame_v which_o be_v vanity_n and_o a_o lie_n but_o true_a and_o substantial_a representation_n of_o truth_n but_o though_o they_o be_v truth_n in_o their_o kind_n yet_o they_o must_v not_o stand_v for_o ever_o but_o only_o their_o appoint_a season_n which_o be_v till_o truth_n of_o a_o deep_a kind_n come_v or_o at_o least_o till_o the_o night_n before_o the_o day_n of_o truth_n discovery_n it_o be_v good_a for_o every_o one_o that_o he_o know_v his_o dispensation_n and_o what_o be_v proper_a for_o he_o in_o it_o that_o he_o may_v both_o bear_v the_o yoke_n and_o enjoy_v the_o sweetness_n of_o it_o not_o leap_v out_o of_o it_o before_o he_o be_v lead_v this_o overmuch_o haste_n will_v cost_v he_o dear_a for_o all_o the_o ground_n he_o tread_v after_o this_o rate_n he_o must_v traverse_v back_o again_o before_o he_o can_v come_v to_o that_o forwardness_n
