frequent_o exercise_v they_o grow_v more_o lively_a and_o vigorous_a and_o will_v thence_o act_v more_o strong_o and_o pleasant_o so_o that_o your_o delight_n in_o do_v good_a will_v grow_v with_o the_o principle_n it_o proceed_v from_o but_o than_o you_o must_v be_v impartial_a and_o even-handed_a herein_o as_o well_o as_o frequent_v and_o run_v the_o whole_a compass_n of_o that_o duty_n precept_n but_o what_o most_o true_o make_v for_o its_o own_o content_a delight_n and_o rest_n who_o own_o temper_n be_v now_o in_o some_o sort_n become_v to_o it_o both_o a_o law_n and_o a_o reward_n when_o they_o have_v not_o have_v only_o have_v their_o imagination_n somewhat_o gratify_v by_o certain_a either_o false_a or_o ineffectual_a notion_n of_o he_o in_o which_o they_o have_v rest_v and_o place_v the_o sum_n of_o their_o religion_n and_o happiness_n never_o aim_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n to_o have_v their_o spirit_n reform_v according_a to_o that_o pure_a and_o holy_a image_n and_o exemplar_n which_o he_o have_v represent_v in_o the_o gospel_n of_o his_o son_n the_o impression_n whereof_o be_v christ_n form_v in_o we_o 2._o that_o other_o have_v think_v they_o have_v not_o enjoy_v god_n when_o they_o have_v suppose_v there_o be_v no_o enjoyment_n of_o he_o but_o what_o consist_v in_o the_o rapturous_a transport_v apprehension_n and_o persuasion_n of_o his_o particular_a love_n to_o they_o and_o slight_o overlook_v all_o that_o work_n he_o have_v wrought_v in_o their_o soul_n as_o if_o it_o be_v nothing_o to_o be_v account_v of_o not_o allow_v themselves_o to_o reflect_v on_o any_o thing_n in_o themselves_o but_o what_o be_v still_o amiss_o and_o vain_o seek_v with_o much_o anxiety_n and_o complaint_n what_o they_o have_v while_o they_o will_v not_o take_v notice_n that_o they_o have_v it_o nor_o apply_v themselves_o to_o improve_v the_o already_o implant_v principle_n that_o be_v in_o themselves_o apt_a to_o yield_v fruit_n of_o so_o pleasant_a relish_n it_o be_v upon_o this_o account_n requisite_a to_o discover_v and_o labour_n somewhat_o to_o magnify_v the_o intrinsical_v delightfulness_n of_o religion_n itself_o and_o to_o put_v the_o more_o of_o note_n and_o remark_n upon_o a_o well-tempered_a spirit_n even_o in_o point_n of_o delectableness_n and_o the_o matter_n of_o pleasure_n it_o have_v in_o it_o by_o how_o much_o it_o be_v with_o too_o many_o on_o one_o account_n or_o another_o a_o neglected_a thing_n there_o be_v only_o somewhat_o of_o doubt_n or_o objection_n that_o may_v possible_o lie_v in_o the_o mind_n of_o some_o against_o the_o scope_n and_o drift_n of_o this_o discourse_n which_o it_o will_v be_v needful_a we_o endeavour_v to_o remove_v before_o we_o proceed_v to_o what_o be_v further_o contain_v in_o this_o gracious_a communication_n as_o 1._o it_o may_v be_v say_v do_v not_o all_o this_o tend_v to_o bring_v we_o instead_o of_o delight_v in_o god_n to_o delight_v in_o ourselves_o to_o make_v we_o become_v our_o own_o centre_n and_o rest_n and_o how_o can_v the_o relishable_a sweetness_n of_o gracious_a principle_n and_o disposition_n signify_v god_n be_v to_o be_v enjoy_v or_o delight_v in_o for_o what_o be_v these_o thing_n god_n to_o this_o i_o only_o say_v 1._o that_o such_o holy_a disposition_n as_o they_o be_v not_o god_n so_o nor_o be_v they_o in_o strictness_n of_o speech_n ourselves_o and_o how_o absurd_a be_v it_o to_o call_v every_o thing_n ourselves_o that_o be_v in_o we_o and_o how_o self-contradicting_a then_o be_v the_o very_a objection_n for_o that_o will_v make_v delight_v in_o god_n and_o in_o ourselves_o direct_o all_o one_o and_o so_o the_o fault_n which_o it_o causeless_o pretend_v to_o find_v it_o will_v real_o commit_v it_o be_v true_a that_o improper_o holy_a disposition_n be_v say_v to_o make_v up_o another_o self_n in_o we_o a_o new_a man_n according_a as_o corrupt_v and_o sinful_a principle_n and_o disposition_n do_v make_v also_o a_o not_o the_o god_n they_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n for_o when_o we_o be_v caution_v not_o to_o quench_v the_o spirit_n how_o can_v that_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o eternal_a uncreated_a spirit_n himself_o and_o the_o very_a thing_n produce_v not_o mere_o the_o productive_a influence_n in_o the_o work_n of_o regeneration_n be_v express_o call_v by_o that_o name_n as_o it_o be_v no_o such_o strange_a thing_n for_o the_o effect_n to_o carry_v the_o name_n of_o its_o cause_n 6._o that_o which_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n be_v spirit_n there_o be_v spirit_n
beget_v and_o spirit_n beget_v and_o the_o spirit_n beget_v as_o it_o must_v be_v distinguish_v from_o its_o cause_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n so_o it_o must_v from_o the_o subject_n wherein_o the_o effect_n be_v wrought_v our_o own_o spirit_n for_o they_o sure_o be_v not_o produce_v by_o the_o regenerate_a work_n yea_o and_o when_o god_n be_v say_v to_o dwell_v in_o they_o that_o dwell_v in_o love_n and_o that_o be_v humble_a and_o contrite_a somewhat_o else_o be_v thereby_o signify_v to_o be_v indwell_v there_o than_o the_o mere_a be_v of_o god_n for_o otherwise_o the_o privilege_n of_o such_o be_v no_o great_a than_o of_o all_o other_o man_n and_o thing_n and_o what_o else_o be_v it_o but_o somewhat_o communicate_v and_o impart_v immediate_o from_o god_n to_o such_o else_o how_o by_o dwell_v in_o love_n do_v they_o dwell_v in_o god_n which_o because_o dwelling_n import_v permanency_n can_v be_v a_o transient_a influence_n only_o but_o some_o settle_a abide_n effect_n a_o impropriety_n to_o say_v it_o be_v ourselves_o again_o 2._o it_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o affinity_n with_o god_n than_o with_o we_o we_o be_v its_o true_a the_o subject_n of_o it_o but_o it_o be_v his_o immediate_a production_n and_o very_a likeness_n a_o divine_a nature_n no_o humane_a thing_n therefore_o if_o here_o our_o delight_n be_v to_o terminate_v it_o be_v more_o proper_a to_o call_v it_o delight_v in_o god_n than_o in_o ourselves_o but_o 3._o it_o be_v neither_o say_v nor_o mean_v that_o here_o our_o delight_n be_v to_o terminate_v but_o that_o hereby_o we_o be_v to_o if_o not_o we_o have_v no_o enjoyment_n if_o any_o thing_n be_v what_o be_v it_o god_n essence_n that_o be_v impossible_a and_o horrid_a to_o think_v as_o have_v be_v say_v and_o we_o need_v not_o repeat_v that_o when_o we_o can_v tell_v what_o it_o be_v to_o enjoy_v a_o friend_n without_o partake_v his_o essence_n who_o communication_n be_v so_o incomparable_o more_o remote_a mediate_a resistible_a it_o be_v less_o difficult_a to_o conceive_v how_o god_n be_v to_o be_v enjoy_v by_o his_o communication_n 2._o it_o may_v be_v again_o say_v but_o if_o god_n be_v thus_o to_o be_v once_o communicate_v be_v indeed_o very_o delightful_a but_o where_o be_v it_o to_o be_v find_v and_o to_o state_n the_o matter_n of_o delight_n so_o much_o in_o what_o be_v to_o be_v seek_v in_o ourselves_o be_v to_o reduce_v the_o whole_a business_n of_o delight_v in_o god_n to_o a_o impossibility_n or_o to_o nothing_o so_o little_o appear_v of_o this_o temper_n and_o so_o much_o of_o the_o be_v impart_v and_o receive_v so_o as_o actual_o to_o have_v form_v the_o soul_n according_a to_o the_o gospel-revelation_n and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o in_o a_o more_o eminent_a measure_n and_o degree_n it_o be_v then_o in_o itself_o so_o delectable_a as_o without_o the_o assurance_n of_o our_o future_a safe_a and_o happy_a state_n though_o that_o in_o that_o case_n be_v not_o likely_a to_o be_v in_o a_o comfortable_a degree_n want_v that_o be_v not_o by_o it_o only_o but_o by_o itself_o without_o the_o present_a constant_a necessary_a concurrence_n thereof_o to_o afford_v unspeakable_a pleasure_n to_o that_o soul_n in_o which_o it_o have_v place_n so_o that_o the_o get_n of_o assurance_n be_v not_o the_o only_a thing_n to_o be_v do_v in_o order_n to_o a_o person_n delight_v in_o god_n of_o which_o more_o hereafter_o be_v intend_v to_o be_v say_v in_o the_o directive_n part_n but_o though_o that_o be_v not_o the_o only_a thing_n yet_o it_o be_v a_o very_a great_a thing_n and_o be_v love_v stir_v in_o reference_n to_o it_o become_v the_o object_n of_o complacential_a desire_n that_o be_v it_o please_v we_o first_o upon_o sight_n or_o upon_o such_o a_o apprehension_n of_o it_o the_o appetite_n pitch_v centre_n and_o rest_n upon_o it_o and_o then_o we_o pursue_v it_o with_o desire_n but_o then_o our_o delectation_n therein_o grow_v as_o our_o hope_n do_v it_o will_v be_v attain_v and_o still_o more_o if_o we_o find_v it_o to_o answer_v its_o first_o appearance_n as_o by_o degree_n it_o be_v attain_v actual_o till_o be_v full_o attain_v our_o desire_n as_o to_o that_o thing_n end_v in_o all_o the_o delight_n and_o satisfaction_n which_o it_o can_v afford_v we_o so_o that_o the_o delight_n and_o rest_n which_o follow_v desire_n in_o the_o actual_a fruition_n of_o a_o full_a and_o satisfying-good_a be_v much_o more_z intense_a and_o pure_a than_o that_o which_o either_o go_v before_o or_o do_v accompany_v it_o and_o be_v indeed_o the_o same_o thing_n with_o fruition_n or_o enjoyment_n itself_o only_o that_o this_o term_n have_v be_v by_o some_o more_o appropriate_v to_o signify_v the_o delectation_n which_o be_v take_v in_o the_o last_o end_n unto_o which_o yet_o it_o have_v no_o more_o native_a designation_n than_o divers_a other_o word_n we_o have_v then_o thus_o far_o some_o general_a notion_n of_o delight_n and_o also_o of_o desire_n which_o be_v take_v in_o here_o only_o on_o the_o by_o and_o as_o tend_v somewhat_o to_o illustrate_v the_o other_o whereof_o yet_o what_o we_o now_o say_v may_v be_v of_o some_o use_n hereafter_o we_o be_v next_o to_o speak_v of_o this_o delight_n in_o special_a which_o be_v here_o to_o be_v place_v upon_o god_n about_o which_o we_o be_v be_v to_o consider_v both_o what_o it_o be_v we_o be_v call_v to_o and_o how_o we_o be_v to_o reckon_v ourselves_o call_v to_o it_o and_o 1_o that_o we_o may_v show_v what_o we_o be_v call_v to_o have_v in_o this_o general_a account_n speak_v only_o of_o humane_a delight_n or_o of_o delight_n as_o it_o be_v to_o be_v find_v among_o man_n it_o will_v now_o be_v necessary_a to_o distinguish_v this_o unto_o mere_o natural_a and_o holy_a and_o when_o we_o thus_o natural_a to_o man_n do_v take_v in_o a_o large_a sense_n include_v holiness_n in_o it_o and_o so_o the_o addition_n of_o holiness_n do_v but_o make_v up_o pure_o natural_a delight_n as_o it_o be_v at_o first_o but_o as_o the_o case_n now_o be_v the_o distinction_n be_v necessary_a and_o the_o latter_a of_o these_o only_o will_v be_v the_o subject_n of_o our_o follow_a discourse_n as_o be_v only_o suitable_a to_o the_o bless_a object_n whereon_o it_o must_v terminate_v and_o only_o capable_a of_o be_v apply_v thereto_o when_o therefore_o our_o delight_n be_v to_o be_v place_v and_o set_v on_o god_n this_o must_v be_v understand_v as_o presuppose_v that_o it_o be_v purify_v drain_v from_o the_o pollution_n and_o impure_a tincture_n which_o it_o have_v derive_v from_o our_o vitiate_a nature_n and_o further_o contract_v by_o our_o converse_n with_o impure_a mean_a and_o vile_a thing_n for_o only_o that_o delight_n be_v to_o be_v place_v on_o god_n which_o can_v be_v so_o place_v and_o delight_v in_o god_n be_v due_o design_v that_o be_v by_o consequence_n design_v which_o be_v necessary_a thereto_o and_o thereto_o be_v necessary_a not_o mere_o the_o direction_n of_o one_o such_o particular_a act_n towards_o god_n but_o a_o holy_a principle_n as_o prerequisite_a to_o the_o right_n do_v even_o of_o that_o also_o unholy_a love_n decline_v god_n and_o indeed_o it_o be_v unholy_a in_o as_o much_o as_o it_o do_v so_o whence_o therefore_o it_o be_v as_o impossible_a it_o shall_v be_v set_v on_o god_n remain_v unholy_a as_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v another_o thing_n from_o itself_o and_o yet_o be_v still_o whole_o what_o it_o be_v although_o it_o can_v be_v another_o thing_n in_o its_o general_a nature_n as_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a it_o shall_v it_o must_v be_v a_o much_o alter_a thing_n by_o the_o accession_n of_o holiness_n thereto_o and_o this_o come_n upon_o the_o whole_a soul_n even_o upon_o all_o its_o faculty_n and_o power_n do_v therein_o spread_v itself_o unto_o its_o delight_n also_o delight_n in_o god_n be_v not_o the_o work_n of_o a_o unholy_a heart_n and_o as_o may_v be_v collect_v from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v holiness_n consist_v in_o a_o right_a disposition_n of_o heart_n towards_o god_n a_o divine_a nature_n participate_v from_o he_o conform_v to_o he_o and_o which_o work_n and_o tend_v towards_o he_o and_o in_o itself_o so_o delightful_a a_o thing_n it_o may_v thence_o be_v see_v what_o holy_a delight_n be_v or_o wherein_o the_o holiness_n of_o it_o stand_v it_o must_v to_o this_o purpose_n be_v consider_v that_o this_o holy_a delight_n be_v twofold_a according_a to_o a_o twofold_a consideration_n of_o the_o delectable_a object_n into_o which_o what_o be_v former_o say_v about_o it_o may_v be_v reduce_v all_o delight_n in_o god_n suppose_v as_o have_v be_v say_v some_o communication_n from_o he_o that_o communication_n be_v either_o of_o light_n whereby_o his_o nature_n and_o attribute_n be_v in_o some_o measure_n know_v or_o of_o operative_a influence_n whereby_o his_o image_n be_v impress_v and_o the_o soul_n be_v frame_v according_a to_o his_o will_n and_o so_o it_o be_v partly_o mental_a or_o notional_a i_o mean_v not_o mere_o notional_a but_o that_o have_v with_o it_o also_o a_o aptitude_n to_o beget_v a_o correspondent-impression_n on_o the_o soul_n and_o not_o engage_v it_o in_o some_o speculation_n concern_v he_o only_o and_o partly_o real_a that_o actual_o beget_v such_o a_o impression_n itself_o it_o be_v partly_o such_o as_o may_v be_v understand_v and_o partly_o such_o as_o may_v be_v feel_v the_o manifestation_n of_o his_o love_n partly_o belong_v to_o the_o one_o of_o these_o and_o partly_o to_o the_o other_o answerable_o hereto_o the_o delight_n that_o be_v take_v in_o he_o be_v either_o more_o open_a and_o explicit_a and_o wherein_o a_o person_n reflect_v upon_o and_o takes_z notice_n of_o his_o own_o act_n and_o whereupon_o it_o be_v exercise_v or_o more_o latent_fw-la implicit_a and_o unobserved_a when_o his_o delight_n lie_v fold_v up_o in_o other_o act_n and_o disposition_n which_o have_v another_o more_o principal_a design_n though_o that_o also_o be_v involve_v in_o they_o the_o former_a way_n the_o soul_n delight_v in_o god_n more_o direct_o apply_v itself_o thereto_o on_o purpose_n and_o bend_v the_o mind_n and_o heart_n intentional_o thereto_o its_o present_a view_n of_o he_o have_v that_o very_a design_n and_o aim_n the_o latter_a way_n it_o delight_v in_o he_o rather_o collateral_o when_o its_o present_a action_n as_o well_o as_o the_o disposition_n lead_v to_o it_o have_v another_o more_o direct_a scope_n and_o aim_n and_o the_o delight_n only_o adhere_v to_o the_o act_n as_o be_v in_o itself_o delightful_a as_o for_o instance_n the_o act_n of_o repentance_n trust_v self-denial_n etc._n etc._n which_o have_v another_o end_n than_o delight_n though_o that_o insinuate_v into_o they_o the_o former_a of_o these_o may_v be_v call_v contemplative_a delight_n the_o soul_n solace_v itself_o in_o a_o pleasant_a meditation_n of_o god_n whereby_o its_o delight_n in_o he_o be_v excite_v and_o stir_v up_o the_o latter_a consider_v god_n as_o the_o object_n that_o yield_v it_o that_o pleasure_n as_o i_o may_v be_v delight_v by_o the_o pleasant_a taste_n of_o this_o or_o that_o food_n without_o consider_v what_o the_o thing_n be_v i_o be_o feed_v on_o nor_o have_v distinct_a reflection_n on_o the_o pleasure_n i_o take_v therein_o have_v another_o and_o more_o principal_a design_n in_o eat_v the_o recruit_v of_o my_o strength_n and_o that_o delight_n be_v only_o accessary_a and_o accrue_v on_o the_o by_o the_o former_a be_v less_o
the_o flesh_n with_o the_o affection_n and_o lust_n thereof_o in_o deny_v thyself_o in_o die_v to_o this_o world_n in_o live_v to_o god_n in_o mind_v the_o thing_n of_o another_o world_n in_o give_v up_o thyself_o to_o the_o several_a exercise_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n watch_v pray_v meditate_v etc._n etc._n in_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n with_o all_o thy_o heart_n and_o in_o do_v all_o the_o good_a thou_o can_v in_o thy_o place_n and_o station_n let_v so_o thy_o light_a shine_n before_o man_n that_o they_o see_v thy_o good_a work_n may_v glorify_v thy_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n in_o contentment_n with_o what_o thou_o enjoy_v and_o patience_n under_o what_o thou_o suffer_v in_o this_o world_n in_o do_v justice_n love_v righteousness_n and_o walk_v humble_o with_o thy_o god_n than_o ever_o the_o vanish_v pleasure_n of_o sin_n do_v or_o can_v afford_v thus_o into_o these_o two_o thing_n may_v all_o be_v sum_v up_o which_o delight_v in_o god_n import_v according_a to_o this_o notion_n of_o it_o 1._o the_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o those_o thing_n by_o the_o help_n of_o god_n own_o communicate_v influence_n which_o in_o that_o case_n will_v not_o be_v withhold_v wherein_o the_o matter_n of_o delight_n lie_v 2._o the_o reflect_v upon_o the_o thing_n themselves_o that_o be_v so_o delightful_a and_o set_v ourselves_o to_o discern_v and_o taste_v actual_o the_o delectableness_n of_o they_o and_o sure_o if_o such_o word_n delight_n thyself_o in_o the_o lord_n do_v say_v to_o we_o all_o this_o they_o do_v not_o say_v nothing_o nor_o say_v any_o thing_n impertinent_a either_o to_o their_o owâ—_n native_a import_n or_o our_o state_n and_o condition_n in_o this_o world_n obj._n but_o here_o it_o may_v be_v object_v if_o we_o so_o interpret_v delight_v in_o god_n we_o shall_v by_o this_o mean_n bring_v the_o whole_a of_o religion_n and_o all_o sort_n of_o action_n that_o be_v govern_v and_o direct_v by_o it_o within_o the_o compass_n of_o this_o one_o thing_n and_o make_v delight_v in_o god_n swallow_v up_o all_o that_o belong_v to_o a_o christian_a and_o be_v the_o same_o thing_n with_o repentance_n faith_n self-denial_n humility_n meekness_n patience_n etc._n etc._n which_o will_v sure_o seem_v too_o much_o to_o be_v comprehend_v under_o the_o name_n of_o one_o particular_a holy_a action_n or_o affection_n especial_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v call_v delight_v in_o god_n when_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o divers_a of_o these_o god_n may_v possible_o not_o be_v in_o that_o instant_n actual_o so_o much_o as_o think_v on_o answ._n to_o this_o it_o may_v be_v sufficient_o answer_v 1._o that_o these_o thing_n can_v be_v hence_o say_v with_o any_o pretence_n to_o be_v make_v the_o same_o thing_n with_o delight_v in_o god_n but_o only_o that_o there_o be_v a_o delight_n adhere_v to_o all_o these_o no_o more_o than_o it_o can_v be_v say_v when_o at_o some_o splendid_a treat_n or_o entertainment_n there_o be_v a_o great_a variety_n of_o delicious_a meat_n and_o wine_n which_o do_v therefore_o all_o agree_v in_o this_o that_o they_o be_v delectable_a that_o all_o these_o dish_n and_o liquor_n be_v therefore_o one_o and_o the_o same_o or_o if_o the_o master_n of_o the_o feast_n call_v upon_o his_o guest_n to_o delight_v themselves_o with_o he_o their_o friend_n as_o here_o the_o particle_n in_o the_o text_n which_o we_o read_v delight_n thyself_o in_o the_o lord_n may_v be_v read_v delight_n thyself_o with_o he_o and_o he_o explain_v himself_o that_o he_o mean_v by_o taste_v this_o and_o that_o and_o and_o sweetness_n in_o the_o communicate_v power_n and_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o they_o why_o be_v not_o this_o delight_v in_o god_n admit_v that_o he_o be_v not_o actual_o think_v on_o in_o some_o of_o these_o exercise_n as_o when_o i_o free_o forgive_v a_o wrong_n or_o relieve_v a_o distress_a person_n or_o right_v a_o wrong_a one_o if_o yet_o i_o do_v these_o thing_n from_o the_o radical_a principle_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n deep_o settle_v in_o my_o soul_n and_o with_o a_o sensible_a delight_n accompany_v my_o act_n and_o the_o disposition_n i_o find_v in_o my_o heart_n i_o or_o i_o through_o my_o forgetfulness_n or_o inadvertency_n have_v no_o present_a thought_n of_o this_o person_n but_o i_o hear_v his_o pleasant_a discourse_n and_o be_o much_o take_v with_o it_o of_o religion_n put_v for_o the_o whole_a the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n call_v upon_o god_n the_o fear_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n how_o common_o be_v these_o acknowledge_v to_o be_v paraphrase_n of_o religion_n and_o shall_v i_o not_o add_v the_o love_n of_o god_n that_o most_o authentic_a and_o own_a summary_n of_o all_o practical_a religion_n and_o which_o ought_v to_o influence_n all_o our_o a_o man_n shall_v delight_v himself_o with_o god_n i._n e._n or_o be_v religious_a it_o fit_o enough_o signify_v religion_n as_o thus_o modify_v or_o qualify_v viz._n as_o have_v this_o quality_n belong_v to_o it_o that_o it_o be_v delightful_a or_o be_v tincture_v with_o delight_n in_o god_n but_o this_o so_o large_a be_v not_o the_o only_a sense_n as_o we_o have_v say_v wherein_o we_o be_v to_o take_v delight_v in_o god_n and_o when_o any_o part_n of_o religion_n cast_v its_o name_n upon_o the_o whole_a it_o will_v be_v very_o unreasonable_a to_o exclude_v the_o part_n from_o which_o the_o denomination_n be_v take_v or_o not_o to_o make_v that_o the_o principal_a thing_n there_o mean_v we_o therefore_o proceed_v to_o speak_v 2._o of_o the_o more_o explicit_a delight_n in_o god_n and_o shall_v therein_o consider_v the_o nature_n modification_n of_o it_o 1._o it_o be_v nature_n which_o from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v of_o delight_n in_o the_o general_n with_o the_o addition_n of_o holiness_n thereto_o which_o be_v the_o work_n of_o
god_n spirit_n determine_v the_o act_n or_o faculty_n to_o which_o it_o adhere_v towards_o god_n may_v be_v conceive_v thus_o that_o it_o be_v the_o acquiescense_n or_o rest_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o god_n by_o a_o satisfiedness_n of_o will_n in_o he_o as_o the_o best_a and_o most_o excellent_a good_n that_o it_o be_v the_o rest_n of_o the_o soul_n belong_v to_o its_o general_a nature_n and_o so_o do_v the_o mention_a kind_n of_o rest_n more_o distinguish_o by_o the_o will_n satisfiedness_n in_o he_o because_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v also_o say_v to_o rest_v satisfy_v in_o respect_n of_o another_o faculty_n by_o the_o mere_a knowledge_n of_o truth_n but_o this_o suppose_v so_o much_o of_o that_o also_o as_o be_v necessary_a and_o because_o the_o act_n of_o the_o understanding_n be_v subservient_fw-fr and_o in_o order_n to_o those_o of_o the_o will_n in_o the_o soul_n pursuit_n of_o a_o delightful_a good_a which_o be_v so_o far_o attain_v as_o it_o actual_o delight_v therein_o therefore_o this_o may_v more_o simple_o be_v call_v the_o rest_n of_o the_o whole_a soul_n whereas_o that_o other_o be_v its_o rest_n but_o in_o some_o respect_n only_o especial_o when_o we_o add_v as_o in_o the_o best_a and_o most_o excellent_a good_a for_o this_o signify_v the_o good_a wherein_o it_o rest_v to_o be_v ultimate_a and_o its_o last_o end_n the_o very_a period_n of_o its_o pursuit_n beyond_o which_o it_o neither_o need_v nor_o desire_n to_o go_v further_o viz._n as_o to_o the_o kind_n and_o nature_n of_o the_o good_a which_o it_o be_v now_o intent_n upon_o though_o it_o still_o desire_v more_o of_o the_o same_o till_o there_o be_v no_o place_n leave_v for_o further_a desire_n but_o it_o whole_o cease_v and_o end_v in_o full_a satisfaction_n and_o that_o we_o may_v speak_v somewhat_o more_o particular_o of_o this_o rest_n in_o god_n it_o suppose_v 1._o knowledge_n of_o he_o that_o the_o soul_n be_v well_o furnish_v with_o such_o conception_n of_o his_o nature_n and_o attribute_n as_o that_o it_o may_v be_v true_o say_v to_o be_v himself_o it_o delight_v in_o and_o not_o another_o thing_n not_o a_o idol_n of_o its_o own_o fancy_n and_o which_o its_o imagination_n have_v create_v and_o set_v up_o to_o it_o instead_o of_o god_n therefore_o his_o own_o representation_n of_o himself_o must_v be_v our_o measure_n which_o be_v forsake_v or_o not_o so_o diligent_o attend_v to_o he_o be_v either_o by_o some_o misrepresent_v according_a as_o their_o own_o corrupt_a heart_n do_v suggest_v impure_a thought_n and_o make_v altogether_o such_o a_o one_o as_o themselves_o and_o such_o as_o can_v be_v the_o object_n of_o a_o pure_a and_o spiritual_a delight_n or_o by_o other_o as_o their_o guilt_n and_o fear_n do_v suggest_v to_o they_o black_a and_o direful_a thought_n of_o he_o render_v such_o as_o that_o he_o can_v be_v the_o object_n of_o any_o delight_n at_o all_o 2._o it_o suppose_v actual_a thought_n of_o he_o my_o soul_n shall_v be_v satisfy_v as_o with_o marrow_n and_o fatness_n 6._o when_o i_o remember_v thou_o upon_o my_o bed_n and_o meditate_v on_o thou_o in_o the_o night_n watch_v 3._o a_o pleasedness_n with_o even_o the_o against_o the_o law_n of_o such_o love_n as_o that_o they_o be_v they_o will_v hear_v in_o due_a time_n they_o be_v more_o ready_a to_o accuse_v themselves_o than_o other_o man_n they_o abhor_v themselves_o that_o they_o do_v not_o more_o entire_o delight_n in_o god_n and_o repent_v in_o dust_n and_o ash_n it_o better_a become_v you_o to_o imitate_v their_o repentance_n than_o glory_n in_o you_o suppose_v it_o possible_a to_o delight_v in_o god_n and_o not_o think_v of_o he_o if_o god_n be_v the_o solace_n and_o joy_n of_o your_o soul_n sure_o it_o must_v be_v god_n remember_v and_o mind_v much_o not_o neglect_v and_o forget_v my_o soul_n say_v the_o psalmist_n shall_v be_v satisfy_v as_o with_o marrow_n and_o fatness_n 63._o and_o my_o mouth_n shall_v praise_v thou_o with_o
