serious_o of_o the_o salvation_n of_o your_o soul_n i_o beseech_v and_o conjure_v you_o to_o read_v that_o part_n of_o your_o instruction_n and_o to_o weigh_v attentive_o the_o reason_n and_o motive_n to_o the_o end_n it_o may_v make_v a_o great_a impression_n and_o produce_v more_o plentiful_a fruit_n in_o your_o mind_n read_v also_o these_o follow_a reflection_n chap._n ii_o reflection_n upon_o the_o precedent_n exhortation_n and_o first_o upon_o the_o thing_n which_o it_o contain_v if_o you_o consider_v well_o this_o divine_a exhortation_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o it_o contain_v five_o part_n in_o the_o first_o almighty_a god_n that_o he_o may_v make_v you_o reflect_v upon_o yourself_o give_v
the_o crime_n that_o cause_v they_o and_o have_v recourse_n to_o god_n for_o our_o deliverance_n but_o they_o ought_v not_o to_o serve_v as_o a_o motive_n to_o detest_v our_o sin_n because_o that_o well_o that_o this_o great_a detestation_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o be_v more_o sensible_a more_o lively_a or_o more_o vehement_a than_o the_o hate_n and_o detestation_n of_o other_o evil_n because_o that_o be_v not_o necessary_a nor_o always_o in_o our_o power_n but_o this_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o esteem_n or_o judgement_n which_o we_o make_v of_o sin_n account_v it_o real_o the_o great_a of_o all_o evil_n as_o in_o effect_v it_o be_v and_o detest_a it_o in_o this_o quality_n above_o all_o other_o and_o purpose_v firm_o not_o to_o commit_v it_o any_o more_o upon_o any_o account_n whatsoever_o but_o we_o be_v yet_o to_o observe_v that_o to_o have_v that_o detestation_n of_o sin_n above_o all_o evil_n in_o our_o heart_n it_o be_v not_o at_o all_o necessary_a that_o every_o evil_n in_o particular_a shall_v be_v propose_v as_o death_n torment_n infamy_n and_o the_o like_a but_o it_o suffice_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v propose_v in_o general_n likewise_o it_o be_v not_o convenient_a they_o shall_v be_v propose_v several_o lest_o their_o representation_n shall_v make_v the_o mind_n to_o waver_v in_o its_o resolution_n or_o make_v resolution_n light_o and_o with_o presumption_n of_o its_o own_o force_n which_o will_v not_o be_v perform_v when_o occasion_n be_v offer_v as_o it_o happen_v to_o st._n peter_n it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o esteem_v sin_n the_o we_o strength_n to_o support_v they_o by_o his_o grace_n then_o offend_v he_o the_o four_o condition_n of_o contrition_n be_v that_o it_o must_v be_v universal_a in_o respect_n of_o all_o mortal_a which_o yet_o they_o be_v not_o full_o resolve_v to_o break_v asunder_o be_v imaginary_a but_o not_o true_a penitent_n chap._n v._o of_o perfect_a and_o imperfect_a contrition_n this_o distinction_n which_o make_v we_o consider_v the_o honour_n of_o god_n more_o than_o our_o own_o concern_n by_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o we_o hate_v sin_n but_o by_o the_o first_o we_o hate_v principal_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n and_o we_o fear_v that_o more_o than_o the_o fault_n or_o offence_n of_o god._n by_o the_o second_o we_o detest_v principal_o the_o offence_n of_o god_n and_o we_o fear_v that_o more_o than_o the_o punishment_n but_o here_o we_o must_v take_v notice_n of_o a_o point_n of_o great_a concern_v when_o we_o say_v that_o in_o attrition_n we_o fear_v more_o the_o pain_n than_o the_o offence_n this_o more_o or_o this_o excess_n be_v not_o to_o be_v understand_v of_o a_o positive_a preference_n or_o esteem_v which_o one_o may_v have_v whilst_o he_o compare_v the_o punishment_n with_o the_o offence_n for_o he_o who_o compare_v these_o two_o together_o shall_v say_v either_o express_o or_o tacit_o that_o he_o fear_v more_o to_o be_v damn_v then_o to_o offend_v which_o the_o will_n make_v of_o the_o one_o above_o the_o other_o that_o be_v of_o the_o offence_n above_o the_o punishment_n in_o the_o practice_n theotime_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v fit_v we_o always_o endeavour_v to_o have_v they_o both_o for_o to_o content_v ourselves_o only_o with_o the_o imperfect_a contrition_n be_v the_o part_n of_o a_o mean_a spirit_n and_o a_o token_n of_o a_o servile_a and_o mercenary_a soul_n beside_o that_o this_o manner_n of_o treatment_n be_v apt_a to_o raise_v doubt_n of_o conscience_n and_o trouble_n of_o mind_n on_o the_o other_o side_n a_o act_n of_o perfect_a contrition_n be_v a_o act_n of_o the_o high_a perfection_n and_o to_o perform_v it_o be_v a_o very_a difficult_a thing_n it_o be_v not_o usual_a neither_o can_v we_o ordinary_o speak_v ascend_v at_o one_o step_n to_o the_o high_a and_o most_o perfect_a act_n of_o a_o virtue_n wherefore_o we_o must_v begin_v with_o those_o of_o the_o low_a rank_n and_o by_o they_o mount_v up_o to_o those_o of_o a_o high_a class_n this_o we_o see_v that_o nature_n herself_o teach_v we_o in_o all_o her_o production_n but_o which_o be_v very_o observable_a it_o frequent_o happen_v that_o we_o be_v deceive_v in_o this_o occasion_n for_o many_o be_v persuade_v that_o they_o have_v perfect_a contrition_n as_o soon_o as_o they_o have_v pronounce_v these_o word_n i_o detest_v my_o sin_n because_o god_n who_o be_v infinite_o good_a be_v offend_v by_o they_o but_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o say_v these_o word_n and_o conceive_v in_o our_o heart_n the_o true_a sense_n which_o they_o import_v first_o then_o we_o must_v begin_v with_o imperfect_a contrition_n after_o that_o we_o have_v consider_v the_o great_a and_o lamentable_a mischief_n which_o by_o sin_n be_v heap_v from_o the_o supreme_a the_o infinite_a bounty_n sanctity_n and_o infinite_o adorable_a majesty_n of_o god_n who_o therefore_o it_o infinite_o offend_v and_o consequent_o become_v infinite_o detestable_a and_o which_o ought_v to_o be_v hate_v and_o detest_a with_o a_o supreme_a and_o if_o possible_a infinite_a hatred_n although_o there_o be_v neither_o paradise_n it_o can_v deprive_v we_o of_o nor_o hell_n to_o punish_v it_o chap._n vi_o of_o the_o mean_n to_o obtain_v contrition_n if_o it_o be_v either_o the_o same_o thing_n to_o have_v contrition_n and_o to_o know_v it_o or_o the_o knowledge_n of_o it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o have_v it_o there_o will_v be_v nothing_o more_o require_v than_o what_o we_o have_v say_v to_o perform_v the_o act._n but_o it_o be_v far_o otherwise_o theotime_o this_o great_a and_o important_a action_n be_v not_o so_o easy_a as_o they_o imagine_v who_o believe_v they_o have_v power_n to_o produce_v it_o every_o moment_n it_o be_v a_o fruit_n which_o be_v not_o of_o our_o growth_n it_o be_v a_o plant_n which_o our_o earth_n now_o dry_a and_o barren_a by_o mean_n of_o sin_n can_v bring_v forth_o except_o it_o be_v water_v from_o above_o and_o prevent_v by_o the_o blessing_n or_o grace_n of_o god._n god_n say_v the_o prophet_n must_v give_v his_o benediction_n and_o then_o our_o earth_n that_o be_v our_o heart_n will_v produce_v its_o
