life_n and_o blessedness_n be_v and_o be_v promise_v in_o both_o 5._o there_o be_v in_o both_o covenant_n a_o condition_n require_v on_o our_o part_n for_o the_o attain_n of_o the_o life_n promise_v we_o be_v not_o leave_v to_o our_o liberty_n in_o either_o covenant_n neither_o of_o the_o two_o covenant_n promise_v life_n absolute_o whether_o we_o obey_v or_o no_o and_o whether_o we_o believe_v or_o no_o but_o under_o the_o condition_n of_o faith_n or_o obedience_n the_o promise_n of_o life_n be_v make_v 6._o both_o covenant_n require_v a_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o we_o that_o we_o may_v have_v life_n no_o life_n be_v promise_v in_o either_o covenant_n but_o upon_o the_o bring_n in_o of_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n before_o god_n either_o of_o our_o own_o or_o of_o another_o unmovable_a than_o mountain_n that_o can_v be_v move_v as_o esa_n 54.10_o &_o jer._n 35.20_o so_o likewise_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v a_o unchangeable_a covenant_n mat._n 5.17_o heaven_n and_o earth_n shall_v pass_v away_o but_o not_o one_o jâ—t_n of_o the_o law_n shall_v fail_v though_o now_o in_o the_o estate_n of_o corruption_n no_o man_n attain_v life_n by_o the_o covenant_n of_o make_v the_o covenant_n stand_v fast_o but_o we_o have_v not_o stand_v fast_o in_o the_o covenant_n but_o it_o be_v now_o become_v impossible_a to_o we_o that_o we_o be_v unable_a to_o fulfil_v it_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v rom._n 8.3_o yea_o it_o be_v the_o unchangablenesse_n and_o stability_n of_o this_o covenant_n which_o condemn_v all_o the_o world_n of_o sinful_a and_o ungodly_a man_n the_o law_n have_v say_v curse_a be_v every_o one_o which_o continue_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n etc._n etc._n and_o the_o soul_n that_o sin_v and_o fly_v not_o to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n shall_v die_v this_o word_n take_v hold_v upon_o they_o and_o condemn_v they_o nay_o more_o for_o the_o fulfil_n of_o this_o covenant_n the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n come_v down_o from_o heaven_n these_o be_v require_v faith_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o work_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n then_o how_o stand_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o two_o covenant_n answ_n for_o answer_v to_o the_o first_o when_o it_o be_v demand_v whether_o faith_n be_v not_o require_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n i_o answer_v it_o be_v but_o first_o it_o be_v not_o the_o same_o faith_n second_o nor_o require_v for_o the_o same_o end_n as_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n to_o explain_v this_o i_o say_v the_o covenant_n of_o work_n require_v faith_n and_o that_o in_o a_o threefold_a act_n thereof_o 1._o in_o regard_n of_o dependence_n upon_o god_n the_o fountain_n and_o author_n of_o all_o good_a we_o be_v not_o in_o our_o first_o and_o best_a be_v which_o we_o have_v by_o creation_n we_o be_v not_o i_o say_v so_o perfect_a but_o we_o stand_v in_o need_n still_o to_o depend_v upon_o he_o that_o have_v create_v we_o for_o the_o continuance_n of_o that_o be_v which_o he_o have_v give_v we_o it_o be_v imprint_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o every_o creature_n to_o depend_v for_o sustentation_n upon_o that_o from_o whence_o it_o have_v its_o beginning_n as_o the_o chicken_n upon_o the_o hen_n etc._n etc._n so_o the_o whole_a creation_n look_v back_o unto_o he_o that_o make_v it_o for_o preservation_n in_o their_o be_v as_o psal_n 104.21.27_o &_o psal_n 145.15_o and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o in_o these_o unreasonable_a creature_n thus_o to_o depend_v upon_o their_o creator_n than_o be_v the_o same_o in_o man_n much_o more_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o law_n require_v this_o faith_n of_o man_n in_o the_o beginning_n though_o now_o we_o be_v as_o god_n in_o our_o own_o eye_n selfe-sufficient_a depend_v upon_o ourselves_o and_o none_o else_o for_o all_o the_o good_a we_o hope_v for_o yet_o at_o the_o beginning_n it_o be_v not_o so_o but_o man_n be_v to_o depend_v upon_o god_n for_o his_o be_v and_o well-being_n 2._o another_o act_n of_o faith_n require_v in_o the_o law_n be_v a_o persuasion_n that_o god_n be_v well_o please_v with_o he_o whilst_o he_o walk_v in_o the_o way_n of_o love_n and_o obedience_n to_o his_o creator_n he_o be_v to_o believe_v without_o fear_n and_o doubt_n that_o so_o long_o as_o he_o obey_v the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n he_o be_v well-pleased_a with_o he_o 3._o he_o be_v to_o believe_v the_o blessing_n of_o life_n promise_v in_o that_o covenant_n and_o to_o expect_v it_o according_a to_o the_o promise_n in_o all_o these_o regard_v faith_n be_v command_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n it_o may_v here_o be_v demand_v object_n if_o faith_n be_v require_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n why_o be_v it_o not_o express_v in_o plain_a word_n as_o well_o as_o do_v the_o covenant_n of_o work_n say_v thou_o shall_v love_v the_o lord_n thy_o god_n and_o serve_v he_o but_o it_o do_v not_o call_v for_o any_o act_n of_o faith_n at_o all_o the_o reason_n thereof_o be_v answ_n because_o when_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v make_v with_o man_n he_o be_v then_o in_o his_o integrity_n sin_n be_v not_o yet_o come_v into_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o cause_n for_o man_n to_o doubt_v know_v his_o king_n will_v take_v in_o good_a part_n the_o service_n which_o be_v tender_v unto_o he_o sometime_o they_o run_v themselves_o out_o of_o all_o to_o humour_v they_o now_o faith_n assure_v we_o that_o there_o be_v not_o one_o prayer_n one_o holy_a desire_n one_o good_a thought_n or_o word_n or_o good_a purpose_n which_o be_v think_v or_o speak_v or_o do_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n blessing_n one_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o life_n go_v before_o another_o follow_v the_o former_a be_v condition_n to_o the_o latter_a faith_n a_o condition_n of_o salvation_n but_o both_o faith_n and_o salvation_n spring_v from_o the_o same_o purpose_n of_o grace_n second_o these_o conditional_a promise_n be_v promise_n of_o the_o gopel_n and_o therefore_o also_o promise_v of_o free_a grace_n either_o these_o promise_n be_v promise_n of_o free_a grace_n or_o else_o the_o gospel_n be_v not_o a_o doctrine_n of_o free_a grace_n it_o be_v the_o gospel_n only_o and_o not_o the_o law_n which_o say_v believe_v and_o be_v save_v the_o law_n never_o make_v promise_n of_o salvation_n upon_o such_o a_o condition_n if_o then_o these_o conditional_a promise_n be_v promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n than_o they_o be_v promise_n of_o free_a grace_n or_o else_o the_o gospel_n be_v not_o a_o doctrine_n of_o free_a grace_n object_n but_o some_o stick_v not_o to_o affirm_v that_o in_o such_o say_n or_o promise_n as_o these_o believe_v and_z thou_o shall_v be_v save_v the_o commandâ—ment_n require_v faith_n be_v legal_a faith_n be_v as_o they_o say_v command_v in_o the_o law_n though_o
