our_o self-love_n and_o carnal_a mindedness_n and_o cowardice_n appear_v we_o shall_v not_o discern_v it_o in_o the_o seed_n and_o root_n if_o we_o do_v not_o see_v and_o taste_v it_o in_o the_o fruit_n see_v without_o taste_v will_v not_o sufficient_o convince_v we_o a_o crab_n look_v as_o beautiful_a as_o a_o apple_n but_o when_o you_o taste_v it_o you_o better_o know_v the_o difference_n when_o you_o must_v yourselves_o be_v unkind_o use_v by_o your_o friend_n and_o forsake_v by_o they_o in_o your_o distress_n and_o you_o have_v taste_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o remnant_n of_o their_o worldliness_n selfishness_n and_o carnal_a fear_n you_o will_v better_o know_v the_o odiousness_n of_o these_o vice_n which_o thus_o break_v forth_o against_o all_o obligation_n to_o god_n and_o you_o and_o notwithstanding_o the_o light_n the_o conscience_n and_o perhaps_o the_o grace_n that_o do_v resist_v they_o 4._o be_v you_o not_o prone_a to_o overvalue_v and_o overlove_v your_o friend_n if_o so_o be_v not_o this_o the_o mere_a remedy_n for_o your_o disease_n in_o the_o love_a of_o god_n we_o be_v in_o no_o danger_n of_o excess_n and_o therefore_o have_v no_o need_n of_o any_o thing_n to_o quench_v it_o and_o in_o the_o love_a of_o the_o godly_a pure_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o christ_n and_o in_o love_a saint_n as_o saint_n we_o be_v not_o apt_a to_o go_v too_o far_o but_o yet_o our_o understanding_n may_v mistake_v and_o we_o may_v think_v that_o saint_n have_v more_o of_o sanctity_n than_o indeed_o they_o have_v and_o we_o be_v exceed_o apt_a to_o mix_v a_o selfish_a common_a love_n with_o that_o which_o be_v spiritual_a and_o holy_a and_o at_o the_o same_o time_n when_o we_o love_v a_o christian_a as_o a_o christian_a we_o be_v apt_a not_o only_o to_o love_v he_o as_o we_o ought_v but_o to_o overlove_v he_o because_o he_o be_v our_o friend_n and_o love_v we_o those_o christian_n that_o have_v no_o special_a love_n to_o we_o we_o be_v apt_a to_o undervalue_v and_o neglect_v and_o love_v they_o below_o their_o holiness_n and_o worth_n but_o those_o that_o we_o think_v entire_o love_v we_o we_o love_v above_o their_o proper_a worth_n as_o they_o stand_v in_o the_o esteem_n of_o god_n not_o but_o that_o we_o may_v love_v those_o that_o love_v we_o and_o add_v this_o love_n to_o that_o which_o be_v pure_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o christ_n but_o we_o shall_v not_o let_v our_o own_o interest_n prevail_v and_o overtop_v the_o interest_n of_o christ_n nor_o love_v any_o so_o much_o for_o love_v we_o as_o for_o love_a christ_n and_o if_o we_o do_v as_o such_o and_o in_o our_o common_a charity_n to_o all_o yea_o and_o in_o our_o just_a fidelity_n to_o our_o friend_n yet_o will_v he_o have_v we_o suspect_v and_o moderate_a one_o selfish_n and_o excessive_a love_n and_o inordinate_a partial_a esteem_n of_o one_o above_o another_o when_o it_o be_v but_o for_o ourselves_o and_o on_o our_o own_o account_n and_o therefore_o as_o he_o will_v make_v we_o know_v that_o we_o ourselves_o be_v no_o such_o excellent_a person_n as_o that_o it_o shall_v make_v another_o so_o laudable_a or_o advance_v his_o worth_n because_o he_o love_v we_o so_o he_o will_v make_v we_o know_v that_o our_o friend_n who_o we_o overvalue_n be_v but_o like_o other_o man_n if_o we_o exalt_v they_o too_o high_o in_o our_o esteem_n it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o god_n must_v cast_v they_o down_o and_o as_o their_o love_n to_o we_o be_v it_o that_o make_v we_o so_o exalt_v they_o so_o their_o unkindness_n or_o unfaithfulness_n to_o we_o be_v the_o fit_a mean_n to_o bring_v they_o low_o in_o our_o estimation_n and_o affection_n god_n be_v very_o jealous_a of_o our_o heart_n as_o to_o our_o over-value_a and_o overlove_v any_o of_o his_o creature_n what_o we_o give_v inordinate_o and_o excessive_o to_o they_o be_v some_o way_n or_o other_o take_v from_o he_o and_o give_v they_o to_o his_o injury_n and_o therefore_o to_o his_o offence_n though_o i_o know_v that_o to_o be_v void_a of_o natural_a friendly_a or_o social_a affection_n be_v a_o odious_a extreme_a on_o the_o other_o side_n yet_o god_n will_v rebuke_v we_o if_o we_o be_v guilty_a of_o excess_n and_o it_o be_v the_o great_a and_o more_o inexcusable_a fault_n to_o overlove_v the_o creature_n because_o our_o love_n to_o god_n be_v so_o cold_a and_o hardly_o kindle_v and_o keep_v alive_a he_o can_v take_v it_o well_o to_o see_v we_o dote_v upon_o dust_n and_o frailty_n like_o ourselves_o at_o the_o same_o time_n when_o all_o his_o wondrous_a kindness_n and_o attractive_a goodness_n do_v
