so_o great_a to_o he_o but_o that_o i_o add_v yet_o a_o three_o degree_n or_o step_n to_o his_o love_n which_o be_v to_o do_v all_o those_o thing_n that_o i_o know_v be_v please_v to_o he_o or_o whatsoever_o i_o can_v imagine_v he_o will_v i_o shall_v do_v de._n how_o know_v you_o that_o you_o do_v those_o thing_n that_o please_v he_o love_n etc._n etc._n there_o be_v two_o thing_n whereby_o i_o may_v know_v that_o easy_o which_o be_v if_o i_o love_v that_o which_o he_o love_v and_o likewise_o hate_n what_o be_v hateful_a to_o he_o concern_v the_o first_o which_o be_v to_o love_v what_o or_o shall_v be_v son_n more_o obedient_a to_o a_o father_n who_o the_o father_n love_v even_o as_o himself_o because_o he_o be_v more_o like_a to_o he_o than_o ever_o son_n be_v to_o a_o father_n and_o so_o great_a be_v the_o love_n and_o union_n which_o be_v between_o they_o that_o they_o two_o be_v but_o one_o of_o one_o will_n like_o power_n and_o the_o self_n same_o knowledge_n who_o although_o they_o be_v distinct_a in_o person_n yet_o be_v they_o both_o one_o in_o essence_n for_o this_o son_n the_o father_n have_v make_v a_o garment_n with_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o goodness_n like_v to_o that_o which_o shepherd_n do_v wear_v which_o the_o son_n have_v put_v on_o depart_v out_o of_o the_o privy_a chamber_n of_o his_o princely_a father_n and_o yet_o for_o ever_o remain_v with_o he_o and_o thus_o he_o live_v here_o in_o this_o monastery_n and_o converse_v with_o us._n for_o otherwise_o we_o can_v not_o behold_v he_o moreover_o when_o his_o father_n will_v send_v he_o over_o all_o the_o world_n clothe_v with_o this_o garment_n &_o a_o little_a travel_v scrip_n he_o enter_v also_o into_o this_o desert_n to_o seek_v out_o his_o sheep_n that_o be_v wander_v and_o stray_v and_o as_o he_o travail_v through_o this_o desert_n the_o father_n permit_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v kill_v of_o wolf_n and_o devour_v of_o dog_n and_o will_v give_v he_o no_o help_n although_o he_o can_v but_o will_v have_v he_o endure_v a_o most_o cruel_a death_n by_o these_o wolf_n more_o painful_a to_o he_o than_o ever_o any_o sffer_v be_v his_o flesh_n most_o tender_a in_o that_o he_o weas_z the_o son_n of_o a_o king_n all_o this_o do_v our_o lord_n of_o his_o exceed_a love_n towards_o we_o that_o all_o we_o that_o dwell_v and_o abide_v in_o his_o house_n may_v know_v and_o try_v his_o charity_n and_o thereby_o may_v love_v he_o again_o consider_v that_o first_o he_o love_v we_o so_o great_o that_o he_o spare_v not_o his_o one_o only_a son_n but_o deliver_v he_o to_o die_v for_o the_o love_n he_o bear_v to_o we_o al._n while_o the_o love_n of_o god_n be_v relate_v this_o discourse_n desire_v be_v whole_o wound_v to_o the_o hart_n can_v not_o refrain_v from_o vehement_a weep_n but_o the_o love_n of_o god_n go_v on_o with_o his_o discourse_n say_v far_a and_o although_o god_n the_o father_n have_v suffer_v his_o son_n to_o be_v kill_v yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o love_v he_o so_o exceed_o that_o by_o his_o great_a omnipotency_n he_o soon_o raise_v he_o from_o death_n much_o more_o beautiful_a and_o glorious_o triumph_v bring_v with_o he_o the_o sheep_n which_o he_o come_v to_o seek_v other_o be_v leave_v in_o this_o wilderness_n that_o they_o may_v be_v feed_v and_o become_v fat_a with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o he_o have_v a_o perpetual_a and_o watchful_a care_n over_o they_o so_o at_o length_n return_v again_o to_o his_o princely_a father_n he_o sit_v now_o on_o his_o right_a hand_n speak_v and_o make_v intercession_n for_o we_o all_o be_v overcome_v with_o to_o great_a a_o love_n towards_o us._n for_o i_o be_o of_o this_o opinion_n that_o except_o we_o be_v spare_v for_o his_o sake_n long_o since_o have_v we_o be_v drive_v clean_o out_o of_o this_o monastery_n so_o wicked_a and_o miserable_a we_o be_v and_o so_o negligent_o and_o sloathful_o we_o serve_v he_o whole_o forget_v he_o and_o contemn_v he_o and_o so_o little_a care_n and_o remembrance_n we_o have_v of_o he_o but_o the_o omnipotent_a father_n love_v this_o son_n so_o great_o that_o in_o my_o opinion_n nothing_o can_v be_v more_o acceptable_a to_o he_o in_o this_o world_n then_o that_o we_o shall_v love_v this_o his_o son_n with_o he_o for_o which_o cause_n i_o endeavour_n &_o labour_n to_o love_v he_o &_o to_o do_v those_o thing_n which_o i_o think_v please_v to_o he_o de._n what_o be_v it_o that_o you_o can_v do_v acceptable_a to_o he_o love_n &c_n &c_n in_o remember_v and_o speak_v of_o his_o most_o holy_a life_n his_o pain_n &_o labour_n his_o most_o bitter_a death_n and_o passion_n &_o his_o holy_a commandment_n and_o as_o near_o as_o i_o can_v conformity_n myself_o according_a to_o his_o manner_n for_o who_o soever_o my_o lord_n &_o master_n see_v most_o careful_o to_o imitate_v the_o life_n of_o his_o son_n he_o do_v he_o most_o love_n and_o hold_v dear_a to_o he_o and_o for_o this_o cause_n be_v it_o his_o holy_a will_n and_o pleasure_n that_o he_o shall_v come_v &_o live_v here_o among_o we_o that_o by_o that_o mean_v he_o may_v teach_v we_o how_o we_o shall_v live_v who_o before_o live_v no_o better_a than_o bruit_n beast_n therefore_o have_v our_o ord_n set_v he_o before_o our_o eye_n as_o a_o mirror_n or_o look_v glass_n that_o every_o one_o may_v know_v whether_o he_o do_v or_o omit_v what_o his_o pleasure_n be_v and_o may_v see_v and_o behold_v in_o the_o life_n of_o his_o son_n as_o in_o a_o glass_n whether_o his_o work_n be_v good_a or_o bad_a neither_o be_v there_o any_o thing_n in_o all_o the_o world_n by_o which_o we_o may_v more_o true_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n thereof_o and_o yet_o beside_o this_o there_o be_v one_o thing_n more_o which_o my_o lord_n and_o m._n love_v that_o be_v my_o boy_n call_v the_o love_n of_o our_o neighbour_n who_o he_o esteem_v so_o much_o and_o hold_v so_o dear_a that_o whatsoever_o we_o do_v to_o he_o be_v it_o good_a or_o bad_a he_o take_v as_o either_o for_o corporal_a or_o spiritual_a gift_n bestow_v on_o he_o by_o god_n or_o for_o any_o thing_n which_o he_o enjoy_v in_o this_o world_n but_o rejoice_v in_o his_o prosperity_n and_o lament_v lie_v in_o thy_o power_n stay_v but_o a_o little_a i_o will_v go_v call_v my_o m._n and_o see_v if_o he_o will_v come_v forth_o to_o speak_v with_o thou_o chapter_n 3._o of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n pronounce_v any_o word_n whereat_o the_o love_n of_o god_n be_v tender_a of_o hart_n through_o the_o compassion_n he_o have_v of_o he_o begin_v to_o weep_v also_o note_v the_o great_a love_n and_o friend_n and_o seraunte_n to_o the_o place_n where_o they_o may_v see_v and_o behold_v god_n then_o the_o which_o there_o be_v no_o great_a happiness_n and_o felicity_n in_o the_o world_n the_o love_n of_o god_n hear_v what_o desire_n have_v say_v be_v much_o plese_v to_o hear_v his_o holy_a purpose_n &_o intent_n &_o begin_v to_o love_v he_o now_o more_o than_o before_o to_o who_o desire_v say_v i_o can_v sufficient_o marvel_v my_o lord_n that_o you_o be_v so_o mighty_a and_o potent_a a_o lord_n and_o the_o son_n of_o so_o great_a a_o king_n admit_v such_o as_o follow_v and_o seek_v after_o you_o to_o find_v you_o with_o so_o great_a labour_n &_o difficulty_n love_n etc._n etc._n do_v not_o so_o for_o this_o be_v a_o mystery_n not_o know_v to_o all_o man_n for_o many_o there_o be_v i_o offend_v or_o displease_v he_o or_o that_o i_o do_v any_o thing_n contrary_a to_o his_o pleasure_n and_o if_o through_o my_o own_o frailty_n and_o imbecility_n i_o chance_v to_o offend_v he_o i_o present_o crave_v and_o ask_v forgiveness_n of_o he_o and_o by_o that_o mean_v our_o love_n be_v repair_v again_o and_o although_o my_o lord_n and_o master_n be_v so_o good_a so_o noble_a and_o so_o gracious_a to_o i_o yet_o be_o i_o not_o content_a with_o this_o first_o step_n and_o degree_n but_o yet_o proceed_v far_o and_o according_a to_o my_o power_n and_o ability_n endeavour_n to_o execute_v nor_o only_o what_o he_o command_v but_o whatsoever_o the_o mean_a in_o this_o monastery_n shall_v command_v i_o in_o his_o name_n and_o this_o accustom_v i_o myself_o to_o do_v with_o all_o reverence_n denotion_n love_n joy_n humility_n and_o ready_a will_n and_o that_o ever_o in_o all_o place_n and_o in_o every_o good_a action_n and_o hereby_o do_v i_o know_v how_o great_o i_o love_v he_o when_o i_o do_v that_o thing_n which_o he_o command_v i_o for_o thus_o i_o persuade_v myself_o that_o nothing_o in_o the_o world_n be_v so_o grateful_a to_o he_o be_v it_o to_o talk_v with_o he_o do_v he_o reverence_n or_o to_o show_v all_o service_n to_o he_o as_o to_o do_v that_o thing_n which_o either_o himself_n or_o someother_n shall_v command_v i_o in_o his_o name_n for_o my_o lord_n so_o stony_a and_o so_o barren_a a_o place_n overgrow_v about_o with_o bush_n and_o thorn_n and_o enter_v far_o in_o he_o find_v there_o build_v a_o stately_a fair_a monastery_n the_o sight_n whereof_o please_v he_o much_o but_o come_v near_o he_o find_v the_o gate_n shut_v and_o a_o certain_a virgin_n stand_v without_o modest_a as_o to_o he_o seem_v both_o in_o her_o attire_n and_o behaviour_n who_o at_o the_o sight_n of_o desire_n dog_n begin_v to_o be_v afraid_a who_o desire_v comfort_v and_o hide_v not_o to_o fear_v assure_v she_o his_o dog_n will_v not_o hurt_v she_o and_o meruail_v to_o see_v she_o stand_v thus_o alone_o without_o he_o demand_v of_o she_o why_o she_o stand_v there_o who_o answer_v he_o that_o she_o expect_v the_o open_n of_o the_o gate_n to_o go_v in_o then_o demand_v far_o her_o name_n of_o she_o she_o answer_v say_v i_o be_o cal-called_n vainglory_n now_o desire_v have_v long_o expect_v the_o open_n of_o the_o gate_n and_o perceve_n his_o a_o grave_n and_o wise_a reverend_a man_n be_v great_o cheer_v in_o behold_v he_o and_o after_o due_a reverence_n do_v to_o he_o speak_v to_o he_o in_o manner_n follow_v good_a sir_n quoth_v he_o my_o come_n hither_o be_v to_o seek_v out_o a_o knight_n call_v the_o love_n of_o god_n who_o as_o i_o be_o tell_v be_v travail_v through_o this_o desert_n and_o have_v his_o abode_n now_o in_o this_o monastery_n wherefore_o i_o humble_o desire_v of_o you_o to_o know_v if_o he_o be_v here_o within_o or_o no._n at_o this_o demand_n of_o he_o the_o porter_n rejoice_v for_o he_o love_v the_o love_n joyful_a and_o secret_a mystery_n whereof_o they_o be_v ignorant_a that_o be_v careless_a thereof_o and_o will_v not_o enter_v into_o his_o secret_a chamber_n with_o he_o although_o they_o be_v in_o i_o have_v love_v and_o esteem_v he_o neither_o will_v i_o altogether_o exclude_v or_o banish_v read_v especial_o for_o such_o as_o be_v yet_o simple_a and_o ignorant_a and_o know_v not_o how_o to_o judge_v of_o their_o thought_n word_n and_o work_n for_o to_o such_o it_o be_v requisite_a to_o spend_v much_o time_n in_o read_v &_o to_o learn_v the_o exercise_n of_o the_o spirit_n &_o mind_n for_o as_o it_o will_v be_v think_v great_a folly_n rashness_n and_o disgrace_n to_o a_o prince_n if_o a_o rude_a country_n fellow_n not_o accustom_v to_o speak_v to_o a_o king_n shall_v presume_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o all_o his_o nobility_n to_o come_v and_o bold_o speak_v his_o mind_n and_o if_o in_o speak_v he_o shall_v use_v his_o accustom_a rustical_a and_o undecent_a term_n it_o can_v not_o but_o be_v think_v so_o great_a a_o disgrace_n to_o the_o prince_n that_o he_o just_o may_v command_v he_o to_o be_v thrust_v out_o from_o his_o presence_n and_o far_o better_a have_v it_o be_v he_o have_v never_o presume_v thither_o even_o so_o stand_v the_o case_n in_o spiritual_a case_n but_o to_o those_o that_o by_o read_v and_o hear_v have_v already_o attain_a to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o divine_a exercise_n to_o such_o the_o exercise_n of_o pray_v be_v more_o necessary_a than_o read_v as_o be_v already_o expert_a how_o to_o behave_v themselves_o in_o the_o spiritual_a court_n farther_n when_o i_o present_v myself_o before_o my_o lord_n and_o master_n i_o be_o very_o careful_a that_o inconstant_o i_o turn_v not_o my_o head_n or_o eye_n hither_o or_o thither_o for_o it_o will_v be_v take_v a_o great_a dishonour_n to_o he_o to_o look_v a_o other_o way_n while_o on_o shall_v talk_v with_o he_o de._n tell_v i_o your_o meaning_n more_o plain_o for_o as_o yet_o i_o master_n and_o cause_v he_o to_o come_v forth_o to_o speak_v with_o such_o as_o seek_v he_o who_o do_v thou_o think_v awake_v i_o even_o now_o when_o thou_o stand_v call_v so_o long_o at_o the_o gate_n &_o knock_v with_o the_o hammer_n of_o tear_n and_o sigh_n true_o the_o bark_n of_o thy_o dog_n i_o be_o the_o true_a messenger_n of_o charity_n &_o come_v first_o to_o the_o gate_n speak_v first_o to_o my_o mam_n near_o to_o he_o &_o be_o soon_o hear_v of_o he_o far_o it_o be_v in_o i_o to_o distribute_v the_o fruit_n of_o a_o most_o rare_a tree_n which_o we_o have_v call_v the_o sight_n of_o god_n &_o i_o do_v give_v it_o to_o other_o to_o eat_v de._n be_v this_o fruit_n pleasant_a in_o taste_n for_o in_o the_o house_n of_o humility_n a_o other_o fruit_n be_v give_v i_o most_o bitter_a to_o eat_v especial_o at_o the_o first_o it_o can_v hardly_o be_v swallow_v desire_n of_o god._n this_o fruit_n be_v most_o sweet_a yet_o far_o sweet_a in_o the_o taste_n of_o some_o man_n then_o of_o other_o according_a as_o man_n be_v more_o desirous_a and_o hungry_a after_o it_o &_o as_o they_o have_v their_o taste_n &_o mouth_n most_o perfect_a some_o there_o be_v who_o tooth_n be_v but_o dull_a or_o blunt_a with_o who_o this_o fruit_n agree_v not_o because_o they_o can_v hold_v it_o other_o some_o eat_v it_o without_o hunger_n or_o appetite_n have_v their_o stomach_n full_a &_o overcharge_v with_o other_o meat_n to_o these_o man_n likewise_o it_o taste_v not_o pleasant_o neither_o be_v it_o light_o digest_v of_o they_o yet_o never_o thelesse_o it_o do_v not_o hurt_v they_o some_o other_o there_o be_v which_o by_o reason_n of_o some_o ague_n or_o some_o immoderate_a heat_n have_v not_o their_o taste_n so_o good_a as_o other_o and_o these_o can_v judge_v the_o goodness_n of_o this_o fruit_n but_o only_o according_a as_o they_o shall_v hear_v by_o other_o de._n i_o beseech_v you_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o taste_v a_o little_a of_o this_o fruit_n desire_v of_o god._n it_o please_v i_o that_o thou_o say_v to_o taste_v a_o little_a thereof_o for_o in_o this_o mortal_a life_n no_o man_n may_v eat_v thereof_o his_o fill_n only_o he_o may_v have_v reason_n of_o long_a penury_n we_o ought_v long_o to_o watch_v and_o desire_v that_o day_n wherein_o we_o may_v enter_v into_o that_o great_a supper_n of_o our_o king_n and_o master_n desire_v and_o thirst_v after_o he_o in_o no_o other_o manner_n then_o do_v the_o hart_n thirst_v for_o the_o clear_a fountain_n in_o the_o hot_a summer_n and_o such_o be_v the_o virtue_n and_o force_n of_o this_o fruit_n that_o one_o little_a morsel_n be_v it_o never_o so_o small_a do_v satiate_v a_o man_n stomach_n be_v he_o never_o so_o great_a a_o eater_n but_o be_v once_o come_v to_o the_o presence_n of_o this_o king_n and_o master_n he_o will_v make_v our_o stomach_n better_o and_o strong_a that_o we_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o eat_v of_o this_o fruit_n so_o much_o as_o we_o will_v and_o never_o receive_v hurt_v or_o prejudice_n by_o it_o but_o here_o if_o any_o one_o eat_v more_o of_o it_o than_o his_o stomach_n can_v bear_v he_o shall_v rather_o receive_v hurt_v then_o good_a thereby_o
