sail_v towards_o rome_n at_o his_o first_o go_v thither_o from_o jerusalem_n but_o especial_o his_o band_n in_o his_o first_o imprisonment_n at_o rome_n for_o this_o you_o must_v understand_v that_o paul_n be_v twice_o prisoner_n at_o rome_n once_o in_o the_o begin_n of_o nero_n his_o reign_n about_o the_o second_o year_n of_o his_o reign_n and_o again_o in_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o his_o at_o this_o time_n he_o do_v deliver_v he_o from_o the_o mouth_n of_o that_o lion_n nero_n both_o he_o be_v less_o cruel_a now_o then_o afterward_o he_o grow_v to_o be_v and_o the_o lord_n have_v ordain_v that_o by_o he_o many_o of_o the_o gentile_n shall_v hear_v the_o gospel_n unto_o who_o it_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o be_v preach_v this_o as_o i_o say_v be_v about_o the_o begin_n of_o nero_n his_o reign_n again_o about_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o his_o reign_n he_o be_v cast_v into_o prison_n at_o rome_n and_o then_o he_o be_v indeed_o devour_v by_o that_o lion_n 25._o euseb_n l._n 2._o adversary_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o do_v cast_v he_o into_o prison_n for_o they_o hope_v that_o his_o band_n will_v prevail_v much_o to_o hinder_v the_o course_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o he_o tell_v the_o philippian_n that_o the_o lord_n have_v turn_v they_o rather_o to_o the_o further_a then_o to_o the_o hinder_v of_o the_o gospel_n but_o how_o can_v that_o be_v very_o well_o for_o so_o his_o band_n in_o christ_n i_o which_o he_o sustain_v for_o christ_n his_o sake_n and_o the_o gospel_n be_v famous_a throughout_o all_o the_o judgement_n hall_n i_o throughout_o all_o the_o emperor_n court_n and_o in_o all_o other_o place_n both_o of_o the_o city_n and_o of_o other_o country_n but_o how_o be_v his_o band_n famous_a in_o all_o these_o place_n namely_o because_o by_o that_o occasion_n the_o gospel_n come_v to_o be_v know_v and_o to_o be_v believe_v by_o many_o in_o all_o these_o place_n this_o be_v the_o first_o fruit_n of_o his_o band_n by_o they_o the_o gospel_n be_v far_o disperse_v again_o through_o his_o band_n and_o constancy_n therein_o many_o of_o the_o brethren_n in_o the_o lord_n many_o pastor_n and_o teacher_n of_o the_o church_n be_v embolden_v more_o frank_o and_o free_o to_o speak_v the_o word_n i_o to_o profess_v and_o preach_v the_o gospel_n then_o before_o they_o dare_v and_o this_o be_v the_o second_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o his_o band_n by_o they_o the_o teacher_n of_o the_o word_n take_v courage_n to_o speak_v the_o word_n more_o bold_o then_o before_o they_o have_v do_v plain_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o contrary_a to_o the_o hope_n of_o the_o adversary_n of_o the_o gospel_n his_o band_n be_v turn_v rather_o to_o the_o further_a then_o to_o the_o hinder_v of_o the_o gospel_n inasmuch_o as_o by_o occasion_n of_o his_o band_n both_o the_o gospel_n be_v far_o spread_v and_o disperse_v then_o before_o and_o likewise_o the_o preacher_n of_o the_o gospel_n more_o encourage_v and_o embolden_v to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n then_o before_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o word_n now_o to_o the_o observation_n here_o may_v be_v note_v the_o apostle_n carefulness_n to_o take_v away_o the_o scandal_n and_o offence_n of_o his_o band_n wherewith_o the_o philippian_n may_v happy_o be_v trouble_v
have_v seize_v upon_o you_o and_o stir_v up_o every_o good_a grace_n of_o god_n in_o you_o quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v within_o you_o but_o strive_v to_o grow_v up_o in_o grace_n and_o not_o from_o want_n of_o good_a will_n towards_o he_o but_o from_o want_n of_o opportunity_n to_o send_v unto_o he_o that_o which_o they_o desire_v whence_o i_o observe_v this_o lesson_n for_o we_o that_o we_o be_v not_o always_o sharp_o to_o censure_v the_o languish_a of_o our_o brethren_n in_o faith_n love_n or_o other_o virtue_n but_o rather_o charitable_o to_o judge_v of_o they_o and_o so_o much_o as_o in_o a_o good_a conscience_n we_o may_v to_o salve_v and_o excuse_v they_o by_o a_o kind_n and_o favourable_a interpretation_n not_o the_o best_a but_o they_o have_v their_o infirmity_n through_o which_o sometime_o they_o so_o fall_v that_o they_o seem_v almost_o to_o be_v dead_a as_o already_o we_o have_v hear_v both_o omit_v to_o do_v such_o thing_n as_o they_o shall_v do_v and_o commit_v such_o thing_n as_o they_o shall_v not_o do_v but_o many_o cause_n there_o may_v be_v of_o such_o fail_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o christian_a duty_n a_o defect_n there_o may_v be_v of_o zeal_n yet_o proceed_v rather_o from_o fear_n of_o disturb_v the_o peace_n of_o the_o church_n then_o from_o want_n of_o inflame_a desire_n to_o see_v the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n wall_n &_o roof_n build_v up_o in_o perfect_a beauty_n a_o defect_n there_o may_v be_v of_o charity_n yet_o proceed_v rather_o from_o want_n of_o opportunity_n then_o from_o want_n of_o will_n to_o perform_v that_o duty_n and_o so_o in_o other_o thing_n cause_n sometime_o may_v be_v presume_v to_o be_v of_o such_o and_o such_o fault_n which_o may_v excuse_v the_o fault_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v charitable_o to_o judge_v of_o the_o fault_n of_o our_o brethren_n and_o rather_o in_o charity_n presume_v of_o that_o excuse_n for_o they_o which_o may_v be_v allege_v then_o by_o sharp_a censure_n to_o condemn_v they_o who_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o condemn_v where_o yet_o we_o must_v have_v these_o caveat_n first_o that_o we_o deny_v not_o that_o to_o be_v evil_a which_o be_v evil_a that_o to_o be_v sin_n which_o be_v sin_n as_o they_o do_v that_o deny_v abraham_n to_o have_v lie_v when_o he_o say_v of_o sarah_n she_o be_v my_o sister_n that_o deny_v joseph_n to_o have_v swear_v when_o so_o often_o he_o protest_v unto_o his_o brethren_n by_o the_o life_n of_o pharaoh_n that_o deny_v peter_n to_o have_v sin_v at_o the_o least_o mortal_o when_o paul_n withstand_v he_o to_o his_o face_n and_o they_o likewise_o that_o say_v of_o pride_n it_o be_v cleanliness_n of_o covetousness_n it_o be_v thrift_n of_o deceit_n and_o fraud_n it_o be_v wisdom_n of_o hypocrisy_n it_o be_v courteous_a humanity_n of_o lascivious_a wantonness_n it_o be_v requisite_a cheerfulness_n and_o the_o like_a for_o this_o be_v not_o charitable_o to_o bear_v with_o a_o fault_n charity_n be_v as_o not_o suspicious_a so_o not_o foolish_a to_o deny_v that_o to_o be_v evil_a which_o be_v evil_a neither_o be_v it_o to_o excuse_v but_o only_o by_o a_o lie_n the_o second_o caveat_n be_v that_o we_o do_v not_o far_o excuse_v the_o fault_n and_o infirmity_n of_o any_o then_o in_o a_o good_a conscience_n we_o may_v for_o if_o through_o favour_n or_o affection_n or_o how_o else_o soever_o we_o do_v so_o what_o good_a soever_o we_o shall_v do_v thereby_o unto_o other_o sure_o we_o shall_v do_v great_a wrong_n unto_o our_o own_o soul_n and_o howsoever_o haply_o we_o brook_v it_o for_o a_o time_n 15.15_o prou._n 15.15_o yet_o in_o the_o end_n shall_v it_o sting_v like_o a_o serpent_n a_o good_a conscience_n be_v a_o continual_a feast_n but_o if_o in_o any_o man_n behalf_n or_o to_o any_o too_o too_o light_a and_o slight_a term_n pass_v over_o notorious_a and_o gross_a fault_n for_o a_o generation_n of_o man_n there_o be_v that_o to_o the_o end_n forsooth_o that_o they_o may_v seem_v charitable_a in_o their_o judgement_n towards_o their_o brethren_n speak_v good_a of_o that_o which_o plain_o be_v evil_a and_o interpret_v that_o unto_o the_o best_a which_o in_o plain_a evidence_n be_v sinful_a and_o wicked_a what_o must_v charity_n be_v a_o fool_n as_o she_o be_v not_o suspicious_a so_o she_o be_v not_o foolish_a as_o she_o will_v not_o easy_o think_v the_o worst_a so_o she_o will_v not_o suffer_v herself_o to_o be_v abuse_v for_o if_o when_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v present_a at_o the_o sermon_n he_o be_v ordinary_o bowl_v or_o card_v or_o drink_v must_v i_o in_o charity_n think_v that_o he_o have_v necessary_a occasion_n of_o absence_n or_o when_o a_o man_n willing_o and_o witting_o run_v himself_o upon_o the_o rock_n by_o break_v the_o wholesome_a law_n of_o god_n or_o of_o man_n be_o i_o uncharitable_a if_o i_o interpret_v not_o his_o action_n unto_o the_o best_a nay_o rather_o he_o misdeem_v of_o charity_n that_o so_o think_v and_o this_o will_v common_o if_o it_o be_v mark_v fall_v out_o to_o be_v true_a that_o he_o that_o so_o urge_v a_o charitable_a judgement_n touch_v such_o thing_n and_o such_o man_n as_o offend_v these_o and_o the_o like_a way_n will_v be_v most_o uncharitable_a in_o his_o judgement_n touch_v the_o best_a man_n and_o the_o best_a thing_n as_o therefore_o we_o be_v not_o too_o sharp_o to_o censure_v the_o fall_v of_o our_o brethren_n lest_o we_o offend_v against_o the_o rule_n of_o charity_n so_o let_v we_o take_v heed_n lest_o upon_o a_o foolish_a conceit_n of_o charity_n we_o think_v well_o of_o that_o which_o heart_n root_n in_o christ_n jesus_n nor_o long_o after_o they_o from_o the_o very_a heart_n root_n nor_o long_o after_o they_o at_o all_o and_o as_o it_o be_v with_o man_n general_o so_o be_v it_o with_o the_o pastor_n particular_o too_o many_o that_o can_v be_v long_o absent_a from_o their_o flock_n and_o yet_o not_o long_o after_o they_o to_o see_v they_o to_o bestow_v some_o spiritual_a gift_n upon_o they_o too_o many_o that_o love_v not_o their_o flock_n from_o the_o very_a heart_n root_n too_o many_o that_o love_v their_o flock_n only_o for_o their_o fleece_n but_o not_o in_o christ_n jesus_n but_o very_o few_o like_a unto_o aaron_n bear_v the_o name_n of_o their_o people_n before_o the_o lord_n 28.12_o exod._n 28.12_o upon_o their_o two_o shoulder_n for_o a_o remembrance_n very_o few_o that_o bear_v as_o aaron_n the_o name_n of_o their_o people_n in_o a_o breastplate_n upon_o their_o hart_n that_o be_v 29._o 29._o very_o few_o that_o have_v their_o people_n in_o their_o heart_n to_o deal_v unto_o they_o not_o the_o gospel_n only_o but_o also_o their_o own_o soul_n because_o they_o be_v dear_a unto_o they_o whereas_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o with_o follow_v for_o a_o full_a complement_n of_o testify_v his_o love_n unto_o they_o and_o win_v their_o attention_n unto_o he_o a_o signification_n of_o his_o pray_v unto_o god_n for_o they_o in_o as_o in_o love_n so_o in_o knowledge_n of_o god_n will_v out_o of_o his_o word_n and_o in_o all_o judgement_n i_o in_o sound_a judgement_n through_o a_o feel_a experience_n in_o themselves_o of_o such_o spiritual_a thing_n as_o they_o know_v by_o the_o word_n whereon_o their_o love_n may_v be_v ground_v and_o why_o do_v he_o pray_v for_o their_o growth_n and_o increase_n in_o these_o thing_n the_o word_n that_o we_o ought_v we_o will_v take_v more_o joy_n and_o comfort_n in_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o word_n than_o we_o do_v but_o how_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o word_n be_v to_o be_v account_v of_o we_o shall_v see_v in_o the_o handle_n of_o the_o next_o verse_n that_o follow_v it_o now_o follow_v and_o i_o may_v be_v the_o less_o sorrowful_a in_o these_o word_n the_o apostle_n set_v down_o a_o three_o cause_n or_o reason_n why_o he_o send_v their_o minister_n unto_o they_o with_o such_o diligence_n and_o speed_n and_o this_o cause_n respect_v himself_o for_o it_o be_v but_o that_o our_o sorrow_n in_o this_o life_n be_v much_o less_o than_o we_o deserve_v let_v we_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n and_o comfort_v ourselves_o in_o his_o mercy_n that_o our_o trouble_n and_o sorrow_n be_v nothing_o in_o comparison_n of_o that_o we_o have_v deserve_v and_o again_o let_v we_o consider_v that_o howsoever_o our_o trouble_n and_o sorrow_n and_o grief_n be_v many_o yet_o so_o only_o they_o press_v we_o as_o that_o we_o be_v able_a to_o say_v with_o the_o apostle_n 8.9_o 2_o cor._n 4_o 8.9_o we_o be_v affect_v on_o every_o side_n yet_o be_v we_o not_o in_o distress_n mercy_n towards_o we_o who_o do_v not_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v tempt_v above_o that_o we_o be_v able_a but_o give_v the_o issue_n together_o with_o the_o tentation_n that_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o bear_v it_o for_o sure_o these_o be_v great_a mercy_n of_o the_o lord_n towards_o we_o that_o our_o sorrow_n be_v so_o lessen_v and_o abate_v that_o they_o be_v neither_o such_o as_o we_o have_v deserve_v neither_o such_o but_o that_o we_o be_v able_a to_o bear_v they_o by_o the_o power_n of_o he_o who_o do_v strengthen_v we_o hereunto_o and_o therefore_o though_o in_o this_o life_n we_o be_v not_o quite_o free_a from_o all_o trouble_n and_o sorrow_n yet_o let_v we_o account_v this_o a_o great_a mercy_n of_o the_o lord_n unto_o we_o that_o we_o be_v less_o sorrowful_a that_o our_o sorrow_n any_o work_n that_o he_o have_v wrought_v such_o a_o longing_n and_o thirst_v desire_n he_o have_v to_o know_v the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n he_o know_v christ_n his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n that_o he_o die_v and_o be_v bury_v and_o that_o he_o rise_v again_o the_o three_o day_n but_o he_o desire_v to_o know_v the_o virtue_n of_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n he_o know_v likewise_o this_o virtue_n of_o christ_n his_o death_n that_o thereby_o he_o have_v vanquish_v sin_n death_n and_o the_o devil_n and_o this_o virtue_n of_o his_o resurrection_n that_o thereby_o he_o have_v purchase_v for_o he_o righteousness_n life_n and_o everlasting_a salvation_n but_o he_o desire_v to_o know_v and_o to_o feel_v in_o himself_o the_o death_n of_o sin_n by_o the_o virtue_n of_o his_o death_n and_o the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n and_o holiness_n by_o the_o virtue_n of_o his_o resurrection_n this_o virtue_n also_o of_o christ_n his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n he_o know_v in_o that_o he_o feel_v in_o himself_o by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n a_o die_a unto_o sin_n and_o a_o live_n unto_o righteousness_n but_o he_o desire_v to_o feel_v this_o virtue_n of_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n in_o himself_o daily_o more_o and_o more_o that_o he_o may_v daily_o more_v and_o more_o die_v in_o the_o old_a man_n and_o ourselves_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n if_o we_o feel_v in_o ourselves_o this_o mortification_n of_o the_o old_a man_n and_o this_o quicken_a in_o our_o inner_a man_n when_o his_o death_n work_v the_o death_n of_o sin_n in_o we_o when_o his_o resurrection_n work_v the_o life_n of_o god_n in_o we_o than_o we_o know_v in_o ourselves_o the_o virtue_n of_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n the_o sacrament_n hereof_o be_v the_o sacrament_n of_o baptism_n for_o when_o we_o be_v baptize_v we_o be_v baptize_v into_o the_o similitude_n of_o his_o death_n that_o vinegar_n into_o their_o wound_n let_v no_o man_n think_v that_o we_o will_v use_v sharpness_n of_o speech_n in_o a_o word_n this_o be_v our_o desire_n to_o present_v you_o pure_a and_o blameless_a in_o that_o day_n not_o have_v spot_n or_o wrinkle_n or_o any_o such_o thing_n be_v you_o fill_v with_o knowledge_n and_o love_n and_o the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n that_o you_o may_v be_v our_o joy_n and_o crown_n now_o and_o in_o the_o day_n of_o christ_n the_o second_o thing_n which_o i_o note_v be_v the_o apostle_n exhortation_n together_o with_o the_o reason_n thereof_o his_o they_o follower_n of_o he_o and_o such_o as_o he_o be_v who_o conversation_n be_v in_o heaven_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o so_o continue_v etc._n etc._n this_o exhortation_n then_o imply_v a_o duty_n for_o we_o hence_o i_o observe_v a_o necessary_a duty_n for_o all_o god_n child_n which_o be_v perseverance_n and_o continuance_n in_o the_o faith_n and_o truth_n of_o christ_n jesus_n so_o as_o we_o have_v be_v teach_v out_o of_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n jesus_n a_o duty_n much_o yet_o never_o too_o much_o urge_v consider_v how_o many_o after_o they_o have_v put_v their_o hand_n unto_o the_o
