chilo_n the_o philosopher_n be_v demand_v whether_o there_o be_v anything_o in_o the_o world_n that_o fortune_n have_v not_o power_n to_o bring_v to_o nought_o answer_v in_o this_o sort_n two_o write_v of_o a_o man_n do_v cause_n we_o at_o this_o present_a to_o have_v he_o in_o as_o great_a veneration_n as_o those_o have_v in_o his_o time_n that_o best_o know_v he_o read_v therefore_o sir_n at_o time_n i_o beseech_v you_o these_o write_n of_o i_o albeit_o i_o fear_v i_o you_o can_v scant_o borrow_v a_o moment_n of_o time_n with_o leisure_n once_o to_o look_v upon_o it_o be_v as_o i_o know_v you_o be_v always_o occupy_v in_o affair_n of_o great_a importance_n wherein_o i_o think_v you_o shall_v not_o so_o surcharge_n yourself_o but_o that_o you_o may_v for_o your_o commodity_n and_o recreation_n of_o your_o spirit_n reserve_v some_o private_a hour_n to_o yourself_o for_o sage_a and_o wise_a man_n shall_v so_o burden_v themselves_o with_o care_n of_o other_o toil_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o spend_v one_o hour_n of_o the_o day_n at_o the_o least_o at_o their_o pleasure_n to_o look_v on_o their_o estate_n and_o condition_n as_o recount_v suetonius_n tranquillus_n of_o julius_n caesar_n who_o notwithstanding_o his_o quotidian_a war_n he_o have_v never_o let_v slip_v one_o day_n but_o that_o he_o read_v or_o write_v some_o thing_n so_o that_o be_v in_o his_o pavilion_n in_o the_o camp_n in_o the_o one_o hand_n he_o hold_v his_o lance_n to_o assault_v his_o enemy_n and_o in_o the_o other_o the_o pen_n he_o write_v withal_o with_o which_o he_o write_v his_o worthy_a commentary_n the_o reasonable_a man_n therefore_o call_v to_o mind_n the_o straight_a account_n recreation_n that_o he_o must_v render_v of_o himself_o and_o of_o the_o time_n he_o have_v lose_v shall_v always_o be_v more_o careful_a that_o he_o lose_v not_o his_o time_n than_o he_o shall_v be_v to_o keep_v his_o treasure_n for_o the_o well_o employ_v time_n be_v a_o mean_a and_o help_v to_o his_o shall_fw-mi salvation_n and_o the_o evil_n get_v good_a a_o cause_n of_o his_o eternal_a damnation_n moreover_o yet_o what_o toil_n and_o travel_n be_v it_o to_o the_o body_n of_o the_o man_n and_o how_o much_o more_o peril_n to_o the_o live_a soul_n when_o he_o consume_v his_o whole_a day_n and_o life_n in_o worldly_a broil_n and_o yet_o silly_a man_n he_o can_v absent_v himself_o from_o that_o vile_a drudgery_n till_o death_n do_v summon_v he_o to_o yield_v up_o his_o account_n of_o his_o life_n and_o do_n and_o now_o to_o conclude_v my_o prologue_n i_o say_v this_o book_n be_v divide_v into_o two_o part_n that_o be_v to_o say_v in_o the_o first_o ten_o chapter_n be_v declare_v how_o the_o newcome_a courtier_n shall_v behave_v himself_o in_o the_o prince_n court_n to_o win_v favour_n and_o credit_n with_o the_o prince_n and_o the_o surplus_n of_o the_o work_n treat_v when_o he_o have_v achieve_v to_o his_o prince_n favour_n and_o acquire_v the_o credit_n of_o a_o worthy_a courtier_n how_o he_o shall_v then_o continue_v the_o same_o to_o his_o further_a advancement_n and_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o that_o the_o lord_n and_o gentleman_n of_o court_n will_v take_v pleasure_n to_o read_v it_o and_o namely_o such_o as_o be_v prince_n familiar_n and_o belove_v of_o court_n shall_v most_o of_o all_o reap_v profit_n thereby_o put_v the_o good_a lesson_n and_o advertisement_n they_o find_v heretofore_o write_v in_o execution_n for_o to_o the_o young_a courtier_n it_o show_v they_o what_o they_o have_v to_o do_v and_o put_v in_o remembrance_n also_o the_o old_a favour_a courtier_n live_v in_o his_o princess_n grace_n of_o that_o he_o have_v to_o be_v circumspect_a of_o and_o final_o i_o conclude_v sir_n that_o of_o all_o the_o treasure_n riches_n gift_n favour_n prosperity_n pleasure_n service_n greatness_n and_o power_n that_o you_o have_v and_o possess_v in_o this_o mortal_a and_o transitory_a life_n and_o by_o the_o faith_n of_o a_o true_a christian_a i_o swear_v unto_o you_o also_o that_o you_o shall_v carry_v no_o more_o with_o you_o than_o that_o only_a time_n which_o you_o have_v well_o and_o virtuous_o employ_v during_o this_o your_o pilgrimage_n the_o argument_n of_o the_o book_n
one_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o torment_n of_o his_o avarice_n and_o beside_o that_o he_o recover_v friend_n for_o his_o person_n for_o riches_n torment_v the_o avaricious_a because_o he_o spend_v they_o not_o the_o twelve_o they_o ask_v he_o what_o the_o prince_n shall_v do_v to_o govern_v other_o he_o answer_v he_o ought_v first_o to_o govern_v himself_o and_o then_o afterward_o to_o govern_v other_o for_o it_o be_v unpossible_a the_o rod_n shall_v be_v right_a where_o the_o shadow_n be_v crooked_a by_o the_o occasion_n of_o this_o last_o answer_n i_o do_v bring_v in_o here_o all_o these_o question_n to_o the_o end_n prince_n and_o ruler_n may_v wealth_n see_v how_o that_o every_o one_o of_o they_o be_v as_o the_o rod_n of_o justice_n and_o that_o the_o commonwealth_n be_v none_o other_o but_o a_o shadow_n of_o they_o which_o in_o all_o and_o for_o all_o aught_o to_o be_v right_a for_o immediate_o it_o be_v perceive_v in_o the_o shadow_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n if_o the_o
