ourselves_o for_o worship_n and_o the_o preparation_n of_o ourselves_o for_o worship_n be_v all_o one_o i_o will_v give_v you_o these_o two_o text_n in_o 1_o sam._n 16._o 5._o you_o shall_v find_v there_o that_o samuel_n when_o he_o be_v send_v by_o god_n to_o anoint_v david_n in_o bethlem_n the_o text_n say_v i_o be_o come_v to_o sacrifice_n unto_o the_o lord_n sanctify_v yourselves_o and_o be_v so_o many_o hindrance_n in_o the_o way_n many_o of_o you_o will_v complain_v that_o you_o be_v much_o hinder_v but_o do_v you_o do_v what_o you_o can_v to_o make_v preparation_n before_o hand_n do_v the_o hindrance_n that_o you_o complain_v of_o put_v you_o on_o to_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o careful_a to_o make_v due_a preparation_n for_o holy_a duty_n five_o 5_o we_o find_v that_o the_o heathen_n themselves_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n when_o they_o do_v but_o worship_v their_o idol_n god_n they_o will_v make_v some_o preparation_n such_o as_o be_v suitable_a to_o those_o god_n that_o the_o worship_v therefore_o they_o will_v wash_v their_o flesh_n and_o purge_v themselves_o but_o though_o their_o preparation_n be_v but_o very_o poor_a yet_o they_o teach_v we_o thus_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n say_v god_n i_o look_v upon_o all_o rehoboam_n do_v as_o nothing_o i_o look_v upon_o his_o way_n as_o evil_a and_o himself_o as_o a_o wicked_a man_n why_o because_o heart_n be_v upright_o according_a to_o what_o you_o seem_v to_o profess_v in_o turn_v to_o god_n why_o then_o prepare_v your_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n you_o do_v not_o in_o truth_n turn_v worship_n god_n to_o get_v our_o heart_n before_o hand_n possess_v with_o right_a apprehension_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o that_o god_n that_o we_o be_v go_v to_o worship_n and_o of_o the_o greatness_n and_o weight_n of_o the_o duty_n that_o we_o be_v set_v about_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o the_o manner_n how_o it_o be_v to_o be_v perform_v the_o rule_n by_o which_o we_o be_v to_o be_v guide_v the_o end_n that_o we_o be_v to_o aim_v at_o meditation_n be_v a_o good_a preparation_n to_o holy_a duty_n and_o these_o be_v the_o
discouragement_n unto_o prayer_n or_o any_o other_o duty_n of_o worship_n than_o a_o encouragement_n to_o that_o i_o answer_v thus_o though_o we_o be_v very_o poor_a and_o mean_a yet_o it_o do_v not_o hinder_v but_o we_o may_v tender_v up_o that_o to_o god_n which_o god_n will_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v suitable_a to_o his_o infinite_a excelencie_n as_o first_o if_o we_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n all_o that_o we_o have_v though_o we_o be_v never_o so_o poor_a and_o mean_a yet_o if_o god_n have_v the_o strength_n of_o our_o soul_n god_n accept_v it_o for_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o god_n do_v not_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o what_o we_o have_v or_o of_o what_o we_o do_v but_o that_o we_o may_v show_v our_o respect_n to_o he_o therefore_o if_o we_o give_v all_o that_o we_o have_v god_n accept_v it_o as_o a_o child_n if_o it_o put_v forth_o all_o its_o strength_n that_o it_o have_v to_o do_v a_o business_n which_o the_o father_n bid_v he_o whether_o the_o business_n be_v do_v or_o no_o the_o father_n look_v upon_o it_o and_o accept_v it_o as_o suitable_a to_o the_o child_n strength_n and_o it_o show_v the_o respect_n that_o the_o child_n have_v to_o his_o father_n and_o as_o it_o be_v story_v of_o a_o emperor_n that_o when_o a_o poor_a man_n have_v nothing_o to_o offer_v he_o but_o a_o little_a water_n that_o he_o have_v take_v up_o with_o his_o hand_n he_o have_v nothing_o else_o the_o emperor_n accept_v of_o it_o so_o that_o be_v that_o which_o god_n look_v for_o that_o the_o creature_n shall_v lift_v he_o above_o all_o if_o therefore_o when_o thou_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n god_n have_v more_o of_o thy_o heart_n then_o ever_o any_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n have_v god_n accept_v of_o that_o and_o that_o you_o must_v look_v unto_o can_v you_o say_v so_o when_o you_o go_v to_o worship_n god_n lord_n it_o be_v true_a there_o be_v much_o weakness_n in_o my_o spirit_n but_o thou_o that_o know_v all_o thing_n know_v that_o thou_o have_v more_o of_o my_o heart_n then_o ever_o any_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n have_v this_o be_v suitable_a to_o god_n god_n will_v account_v this_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n to_o be_v a_o present_a suitable_a to_o himself_o as_o in_o the_o law_n when_o they_o offer_v to_o the_o build_n of_o the_o temple_n every_o one_o can_v not_o offer_v gold_n and_o silver_n and_o precious_a stone_n but_o some_o come_v and_o offer_v badgers-skin_n and_o some_o woman_n do_v spin_v and_o offer_a coats-hair_n to_o the_o build_n of_o the_o temple_n and_o so_o god_n accept_v of_o that_o be_v the_o most_o they_o can_v do_v 2_o in_o the_o second_o place_n when_o we_o do_v not_o only_o offer_v unto_o god_n the_o most_o we_o can_v but_o when_o we_o add_v to_o this_o the_o grief_n of_o our_o soul_n that_o we_o can_v do_v no_o more_o when_o the_o soul_n shall_v strive_v to_o the_o uttermost_a it_o can_v and_o when_o it_o have_v do_v all_o sai_z i_o be_o a_o unprofitable_a servant_n oh_o that_o i_o can_v do_v more_o this_o be_v suitable_a to_o god_n 3_o three_o the_o people_n of_o god_n though_o they_o be_v weak_a yet_o the_o weak_a servant_n of_o god_n be_v able_a to_o offer_v up_o to_o god_n somewhat_o that_o be_v suitable_a to_o the_o infinite_a majesty_n of_o god_n upon_o this_o three_o ground_n because_o that_o there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o impression_n of_o god_n infinitnes_n in_o those_o service_n that_o a_o gracious_a heart_n do_v tender_a unto_o god_n and_o therefore_o suitable_a unto_o god_n you_o will_v say_v god_n be_v a_o infinite_a glorious_a god_n be_v it_o so_o he_o be_v infinite_a that_o be_v certain_a but_o the_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o a_o gracious_a heart_n tender_v unto_o god_n it_o have_v a_o impression_n of_o god_n infiniteness_n upon_o it_o how_o to_o god_n infinite_o it_o will_v be_v here_o lie_v i_o conceive_v the_o main_a difference_n between_o the_o most_o glorious_a hypocrite_n in_o the_o world_n and_o one_o that_o have_v true_a grace_n yea_o that_o have_v but_o the_o least_o degree_n of_o grace_n the_o most_o glorious_a hypocrite_n in_o the_o world_n who_o it_o may_v be_v for_o the_o outward_a act_n do_v more_o than_o one_o that_o have_v true_a grace_n yet_o such_o a_o one_o do_v limit_v himself_o he_o do_v great_a thing_n but_o he_o do_v it_o so_o as_o he_o limit_n himself_o that_o be_v so_o much_o as_o may_v serve_v for_o such_o and_o such_o end_n of_o he_o so_o much_o as_o may_v serve_v his_o turn_n either_o to_o satisfy_v his_o conscience_n or_o to_o get_v credit_n and_o esteem_v to_o be_v account_v eminent_a in_o such_o a_o way_n so_o much_o he_o do_v do_v but_o his_o duty_n be_v always_o limit_v within_o such_o bound_n and_o if_o he_o can_v conceive_v that_o he_o may_v go_v to_o heaven_n and_o that_o he_o may_v have_v as_o much_o credit_n and_o honour_n and_o as_o much_o peace_n of_o conscience_n with_o do_v less_o he_o will_v do_v less_o but_o now_o one_o that_o have_v grace_n though_o but_o little_a though_o but_o the_o least_o dram_n of_o grace_n he_o go_v far_a indeed_o say_v he_o though_o through_o the_o little_a grace_n that_o i_o have_v i_o can_v do_v what_o another_o can_v do_v yet_o this_o do_v so_o enlarge_v my_o heart_n that_o i_o will_v have_v no_o bound_n set_v in_o what_o i_o do_v for_o god_n but_o i_o will_v have_v it_o enlarge_v to_o the_o uttermost_a latitude_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a beyond_o what_o ever_o yet_o be_v do_v for_o god_n in_o the_o world_n and_o the_o more_o i_o do_v the_o more_o i_o do_v desire_n to_o do_v that_o be_v now_o a_o kind_n of_o infinitnes_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n where_o grace_n come_v i_o say_v grace_n enlarge_v the_o heart_n to_o a_o kind_n of_o infiniteness_n that_o the_o more_o it_o do_v the_o more_o it_o will_v do_v there_o be_v no_o hypocrite_n but_o will_v have_v his_o period_n he_o will_v rise_v thus_o and_o thus_o and_o thus_o high_a ordinary_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o if_o he_o live_v in_o some_o company_n there_o he_o be_v high_a but_o if_o he_o live_v in_o other_o company_n there_o he_o be_v low_a now_o there_o be_v nothing_o do_v limit_v a_o gracious_a heart_n but_o to_o all_o eternity_n it_o will_v work_v and_o work_v more_o and_o more_o for_o god_n here_o now_o be_v a_o worship_n that_o be_v some_o way_n suitable_a to_o the_o infinite_a excellency_n that_o there_o be_v in_o god_n here_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o proportion_n as_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v even_o between_o the_o creature_n and_o god_n himself_o in_o this_o thing_n but_o it_o be_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o the_o creature_n here_o be_v the_o image_n of_o god_n indeed_o because_o grace_n do_v so_o enlarge_v the_o heart_n even_o to_o a_o infiniteness_n as_o it_o be_v for_o god_n and_o thus_o you_o see_v in_o the_o general_n what_o it_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n to_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n that_o which_o be_v some_o way_n suitable_a to_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o infinite_a god_n 2_o you_o know_v there_o be_v a_o second_o thing_n viz._n that_o then_o i_o do_v sanctify_v god_n name_n when_o i_o come_v so_o to_o worship_n god_n as_o my_o heart_n work_v and_o follow_v after_o god_n as_o a_o god_n so_o as_o it_o do_v beseem_v the_o soul_n of_o a_o creature_n to_o follow_v the_o infinite_a creator_n and_o to_o work_v after_o the_o infinite_a creator_n so_o david_n in_o psal_n 63._o 5._o my_o soul_n follow_v hard_a after_o thou_o o_o god_n and_o mark_n it_o be_v a_o very_a sweet_a scripture_n thy_o right_a hand_n uphold_v i_o those_o who_o heart_n follow_v hard_a after_o the_o lord_n they_o have_v the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n uphold_v of_o they_o it_o be_v a_o mighty_a encouragement_n to_o put_v forth_o the_o heart_n to_o the_o uttermost_a because_o when_o thou_o do_v so_o he_o accept_v his_o offering_n so_o you_o must_v look_v to_o that_o to_o have_v your_o person_n first_o accept_v of_o god_n before_o any_o duty_n can_v be_v accept_v you_o think_v though_o you_o be_v have_v low_a thought_n and_o apprehension_n of_o the_o infinite_a majesty_n of_o god_n at_o any_o time_n but_o especial_o when_o thou_o be_v to_o worship_n the_o great_a god_n then_o look_v upon_o the_o lord_n in_o that_o infinite_a distance_n that_o there_o be_v between_o he_o and_o thyself_o yea_o that_o infinite_a distance_n that_o there_o be_v between_o he_o and_o all_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n look_v upon_o the_o lord_n as_o lift_v up_o in_o glory_n not_o only_o above_o all_o creature_n but_o above_o all_o excellency_n that_o all_o angel_n and_o man_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n be_v able_a to_o imagine_v look_v upon_o the_o lord_n as_o have_v all_o excellency_n in_o himself_o join_v in_o one_o and_o that_o immutable_o look_v upon_o he_o as_o the_o fountain_n of_o all_o excellency_n good_a and_o glory_n that_o all_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n have_v and_o look_v upon_o the_o â—ord_n every_o time_n thou_o come_v to_o worship_n he_o as_o that_o god_n who_o angel_n do_v adore_v and_o before_o who_o the_o devil_n be_v force_v to_o tremble_v behold_v he_o in_o this_o his_o glory_n and_o this_o will_v help_v thou_o to_o sanctify_v his_o name_n when_o thou_o come_v to_o he_o the_o great_a reason_n why_o people_n come_v and_o worship_n god_n in_o a_o slight_a way_n it_o be_v because_o that_o they_o do_v not_o see_v god_n in_o his_o glory_n it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n for_o god_n to_o give_v unto_o we_o a_o sight_n of_o himself_o a_o sight_n of_o his_o glory_n here_o in_o this_o world_n while_o we_o be_v worship_v of_o he_o this_o will_v keep_v our_o eye_n and_o our_o thought_n from_o wander_a if_o we_o have_v a_o sight_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o have_v high_a thought_n of_o god_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o wander_v so_o as_o we_o do_v but_o mere_o because_o we_o see_v not_o god_n as_o now_o suppose_v you_o be_v in_o your_o house_n and_o look_v after_o every_o feather_n that_o be_v fly_v up_o and_o down_o if_o you_o shall_v hear_v that_o the_o â—ing_n be_v come_v into_o the_o â—oom_n or_o any_o great_a person_n it_o will_v compose_v your_o spirit_n because_o you_o have_v â—igh_a thought_n of_o such_o as_o or_o those_o that_o be_v above_o you_o so_o let_v we_o look_v upon_o god_n as_o in_o his_o excellency_n and_o his_o glory_n and_o have_v high_a thought_n of_o he_o and_o this_o be_v that_o whereby_o we_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n when_o we_o come_v before_o he_o in_o holy_a duty_n and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n first_o a_o sanctify_a heart_n and_o then_o high_a thought_n of_o cloak_n to_o cover_v their_o wickedness_n thou_o be_v so_o far_o from_o sanctify_a god_n name_v that_o thou_o pollute_a god_n name_v thou_o do_v what_o in_o thou_o lie_v for_o to_o cast_v even_o dirt_n in_o the_o face_n of_o god_n himself_o that_o do_v so_o the_o second_o base_a end_n be_v to_o subject_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n to_o the_o praise_n of_o man_n as_o to_o perform_v duty_n of_o god_n worship_n for_o the_o esteem_n of_o man_n and_o because_o we_o shall_v be_v well_o think_v of_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o you_o young_a one_o and_o other_o you_o will_v fain_o be_v and_o praise_n of_o god_n that_o the_o name_n of_o the_o bless_a god_n may_v be_v honour_v now_o i_o be_o go_v to_o prayer_n oh_o that_o i_o may_v pray_v so_o as_o i_o may_v lift_v up_o god_n name_n i_o be_o go_v to_o hear_v oh_o that_o i_o may_v hear_v so_o as_o god_n may_v be_v honour_v by_o my_o hear_n it_o be_v this_o that_o carry_v i_o on_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o make_v i_o rise_v danger_n but_o now_o one_o that_o have_v high_a end_n in_o holy_a duty_n make_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n to_o be_v the_o joy_n of_o his_o soul_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o his_o prosperity_n must_v come_v without_o any_o righteousness_n of_o thy_o own_o thou_o must_v never_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n but_o as_o a_o poor_a worm_n and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o difference_n that_o be_v make_v between_o thou_o and_o other_o in_o outward_a respect_n it_o be_v nothing_o to_o thou_o when_o thou_o be_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n thou_o be_v as_o a_o base_a vile_a worm_n though_o though_o be_v a_o prince_n or_o emperor_n 4_o thy_o heart_n must_v be_v take_v off_o from_o what_o thou_o do_v if_o thou_o have_v any_o ability_n of_o grace_n yet_o thy_o heart_n must_v be_v take_v off_o there_o there_o may_v be_v pride_n not_o only_o from_o one_o part_n but_o it_o may_v be_v god_n have_v give_v i_o inlargement_n in_o prayer_n the_o devil_n will_v come_v in_o and_o seek_v to_o puff_n up_o thy_o heart_n even_o because_o of_o this_o but_o thy_o heart_n must_v be_v take_v off_o there_o and_o thou_o must_v deny_v thyself_o in_o all_o when_o thou_o have_v do_v the_o best_a service_n of_o all_o yet_o thou_o must_v conclude_v thou_o be_v a_o unprofitable_a servant_n when_o thou_o have_v pray_v the_o best_a yet_o rise_v with_o shame_n and_o take_v heed_n of_o have_v thy_o heart_n puff_v up_o even_o through_o the_o assistance_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n 5_o last_o thou_o must_v come_v with_o a_o humble_a resignation_n of_o thyself_o to_o god_n to_o be_v content_a to_o wait_v upon_o god_n as_o long_o as_o he_o please_v to_o waiâ—_n upon_o god_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o time_n and_o of_o the_o measure_n and_o of_o the_o that_o which_o be_v god_n own_o in_o sanctify_a god_n name_v i_o speak_v to_o this_o before_o in_o the_o point_n of_o preparation_n viz._n that_o in_o god_n worship_n we_o must_v give_v he_o his_o own_o i_o will_v only_o mention_v it_o here_o in_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o two_o regard_n 1_o first_o to_o give_v god_n his_o own_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o 2_o second_o to_o give_v god_n his_o own_o that_o be_v what_o come_v from_o the_o
work_n of_o his_o own_o spirit_n or_o else_o we_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n i_o will_v give_v you_o one_o text_n further_o about_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o in_o exod._n 39_o if_o you_o read_v the_o chapter_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o there_o be_v ten_o time_n say_v that_o they_o do_v as_o god_n have_v command_v moses_n and_o then_o in_o the_o close_a of_o the_o chapter_n when_o they_o gold_n but_o it_o must_v have_v the_o right_a stamp_n or_o else_o it_o can_v go_v for_o current_a coin_n and_o so_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o the_o thing_n we_o offer_v to_o god_n in_o his_o worship_n be_v god_n own_o be_v what_o we_o have_v warrant_n for_o out_o of_o god_n word_n but_o it_o must_v have_v the_o stamp_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n there_o be_v two_o question_n that_o he_o will_v ask_v first_o who_o require_v this_o at_o your_o hand_n but_o then_o if_o you_o can_v answer_v thus_o thou_o o_o lord_n do_v require_v it_o it_o be_v well_o but_o then_o god_n have_v another_o question_n who_o image_n and_o superscription_n be_v this_o if_o thou_o can_v not_o give_v a_o answer_n to_o that_o it_o will_v be_v reject_v too_o thou_o must_v be_v act_v by_o divine_a principle_n in_o all_o that_o thou_o do_v there_o must_v be_v the_o stamp_n of_o the_o spirit_n upon_o that_o which_o be_v tender_v to_o god_n else_o it_o be_v nothing_o to_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n second_o how_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o our_o duty_n be_v act_v by_o natural_a conscience_n rather_o than_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n 1_o first_o if_o thou_o be_v act_v by_o natural_a part_n they_o will_v not_o change_v thy_o heart_n man_n that_o do_v perform_v duty_n by_o the_o strength_n of_o natural_a part_n they_o may_v be_v as_o large_a as_o other_o and_o speak_v to_o the_o edification_n of_o other_o but_o those_o duty_n do_v never_o change_v their_o heart_n now_o if_o thou_o be_v act_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n thou_o will_v be_v change_v into_o the_o very_a image_n of_o his_o spirit_n 2_o second_o if_o man_n be_v act_v by_o natural_a part_n they_o will_v not_o carry_v they_o through_o difficulty_n and_o discouragement_n but_o now_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n if_o thou_o have_v act_v by_o he_o though_o thou_o do_v meet_v with_o never_o such_o difficulty_n &_o discouragement_n thou_o will_v be_v carry_v through_o they_o all_o 3_o thou_o may_v know_v it_o by_o this_o wherein_o do_v thou_o account_v the_o excellency_n of_o a_o duty_n to_o consist_v either_o in_o thyself_o or_o other_o thou_o perform_v a_o duty_n now_o it_o may_v be_v thy_o part_n do_v act_v very_o lively_a and_o to_o thy_o credit_n and_o yet_o thy_o conscience_n tell_v thou_o that_o thy_o heart_n be_v straighten_v now_o can_v thou_o rise_v up_o with_o joy_n because_o thou_o have_v thy_o end_n at_o another_o time_n perhaps_o thy_o heart_n be_v more_o trouble_v and_o break_v but_o thou_o do_v not_o express_v thyself_o so_o much_o than_o thou_o be_v discourage_v and_o when_o thou_o see_v another_o perform_v a_o duty_n if_o thou_o see_v but_o any_o fail_n in_o their_o expression_n thou_o pitche_v upon_o that_o and_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o poor_a thing_n thou_o be_v not_o able_a to_o see_v a_o excellency_n in_o holy_a duty_n except_o there_o be_v a_o excellency_n of_o natural_a part_n but_o those_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n they_o can_v find_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n act_v in_o other_o though_o they_o have_v not_o such_o natural_a part_n 4_o those_o that_o be_v act_v by_o their_o natural_a part_n in_o secret_a they_o be_v less_o enlarge_v than_o they_o be_v before_o other_o a_o great_a deal_n their_o part_n act_n much_o before_o other_o but_o what_o be_v there_o between_o god_n and_o their_o own_o soul_n 5_o they_o that_o be_v so_o act_v will_v not_o be_v very_o constant_a you_o shall_v have_v young_a one_o that_o begin_v to_o look_v towards_o religion_n their_o part_n be_v a_o little_a fresh_a and_o they_o be_v mighty_o enlarge_v in_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o thing_n be_v good_a for_o they_o to_o make_v use_n of_o their_o part_n but_o how_o ordinary_a be_v it_o that_o after_o a_o few_o year_n they_o be_v dead_a and_o dull_a than_o they_o be_v before_o and_o have_v less_o mind_n to_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n than_o they_o have_v former_o be_v this_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n you_o will_v find_v as_o much_o savour_n and_o relish_v in_o they_o afterward_o as_o there_o be_v at_o that_o time_n second_o for_o natural_a conscience_n which_o sometime_o put_v man_n upon_o act_v of_o duty_n and_o indeed_o be_v better_a than_o mere_o natural_a part_n 1_o if_o it_o be_v only_o natural_a conscience_n it_o put_v upon_o duty_n but_o give_v no_o strength_n to_o do_v they_o but_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n put_v thou_o upon_o a_o duty_n it_o give_v thou_o some_o strength_n to_o perform_v it_o some_o strength_n whereby_o thou_o get_v some_o communion_n with_o god_n 2_o if_o it_o be_v natural_a conscience_n it_o put_v upon_o the_o duty_n but_o make_v not_o the_o heart_n glad_a of_o the_o duty_n and_o to_o love_v the_o duty_n but_o if_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n it_o make_v thou_o to_o delight_v in_o it_o and_o to_o love_v it_o 3_o three_o if_o it_o be_v natural_a conscience_n thou_o do_v not_o by_o that_o increase_n thy_o communion_n with_o god_n thou_o do_v thy_o duty_n as_o in_o a_o round_a but_o now_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n put_v thou_o upon_o holy_a duty_n it_o be_v not_o a_o task_n do_v but_o thou_o find_v more_o and_o more_o increase_n in_o communion_n with_o god_n thy_o heart_n more_o raise_v to_o god_n and_o more_o close_v with_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o still_o more_o and_o more_o in_o the_o course_n of_o thy_o life_n i_o have_v a_o little_a converse_n with_o god_n at_o first_o when_o god_n begin_v to_o acquaint_v my_o soul_n with_o his_o way_n but_o through_o his_o mercy_n now_o i_o find_v more_o communion_n with_o he_o and_o so_o thou_o can_v bless_v thyself_o in_o god_n in_o that_o converse_n that_o thou_o have_v in_o communion_n with_o he_o thou_o will_v not_o lose_v that_o communion_n thou_o have_v with_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n for_o all_o the_o world_n other_o have_v their_o companion_n that_o they_o have_v their_o communion_n withal_o much_o good_a may_v do_v they_o but_o the_o lord_n have_v show_v i_o another_o manner_n of_o communion_n which_o my_o soul_n can_v have_v with_o himself_o in_o which_o it_o have_v sweet_a satisfaction_n and_o thus_o you_o have_v have_v seven_o particular_n for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n sermon_n vi._n leviticus_n 10._o 3._o i_o will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o they_o that_o come_v nigh_o i_o 4_o again_o 1645._o as_o natural_a conscience_n do_v give_v no_o strength_n to_o do_v the_o duty_n so_o it_o make_v not_o the_o duty_n to_o be_v strong_a to_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v thus_o there_o be_v no_o strength_n get_v by_o the_o duty_n they_o be_v not_o by_o one_o duty_n prepare_v for_o another_o but_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v strength_n to_o the_o upright_a that_o be_v when_o a_o gracious_a heart_n be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n worship_n it_o find_v the_o very_a duty_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n to_o be_v strength_n to_o it_o and_o so_o it_o fit_v it_o for_o another_o duty_n 5_o further_n a_o natural_a conscience_n limit_n its_o self_n and_o be_v bound_v that_o be_v so_o much_o as_o will_v serve_v the_o turn_n for_o its_o own_o peace_n and_o quiet_a so_o much_o it_o will_v do_v and_o no_o more_o but_o when_o one_o be_v act_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n one_o be_v enlarge_v without_o any_o limit_n at_o all_o not_o bound_v to_o one_o own_o peace_n for_o the_o more_o peace_n a_o gracious_a heart_n have_v in_o duty_n the_o more_o it_o be_v enlarge_v in_o duty_n now_o a_o natural_a conscience_n that_o put_v to_o duty_n and_o will_v act_v you_o when_o you_o want_v peace_n when_o you_o be_v in_o trouble_n and_o fear_n but_o when_o
sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o a_o way_n of_o mercy_n towards_o we_o for_o the_o first_o god_n will_v manifest_v that_o he_o be_v displease_v with_o such_o duty_n that_o thou_o do_v perform_v he_o will_v manifest_v it_o one_o way_n or_o other_o that_o he_o be_v a_o holy_a god_n and_o he_o do_v not_o accept_v of_o such_o unholy_a thing_n as_o thou_o do_v tender_a up_o to_o he_o for_o the_o truth_n be_v if_o god_n shall_v accept_v of_o such_o unholy_a thing_n from_o man_n god_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v like_a unto_o themselves_o as_o a_o man_n if_o he_o do_v entertain_v any_o as_o his_o familiar_a friend_n that_o be_v naught_o and_o wicked_a it_o be_v his_o disgrace_n and_o dishonour_n a_o man_n may_v sometime_o employ_v in_o some_o business_n those_o that_o be_v naught_o and_o wicked_a and_o it_o may_v be_v no_o disgrace_n to_o he_o but_o if_o he_o do_v entertain_v one_o in_o his_o house_n that_o be_v wicked_a it_o be_v a_o dishonour_n to_o he_o so_o god_n may_v employ_v the_o most_o wicked_a man_n in_o the_o world_n in_o some_o outward_a service_n but_o if_o he_o shall_v accept_v of_o they_o in_o his_o worship_n it_o will_v be_v a_o dishonour_n to_o god_n and_o therefore_o god_n that_o he_o may_v sanctify_v his_o own_o name_n he_o will_v manifest_v his_o displeasure_n at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o against_o such_o duty_n of_o worship_n you_o that_o perform_v worship_n in_o a_o formal_a manner_n and_o with_o unclean_a vile_a heart_n i_o say_v it_o stand_v upon_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n if_o he_o will_v manifest_v himself_o a_o holy_a god_n he_o must_v manifest_v some_o displeasure_n against_o that_o way_n of_o thy_o worship_v of_o he_o this_o one_o meditation_n one_o will_v think_v shall_v mighty_o sink_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o any_o man_n that_o have_v a_o enlighten_v conscience_n to_o think_v thus_o it_o stand_v upon_o the_o holiness_n of_o god_n and_o he_o can_v appear_v to_o be_v a_o holy_a god_n except_o he_o do_v some_o way_n or_o other_o appear_v to_o be_v against_o i_o in_o such_o duty_n that_o i_o tender_v up_o unto_o he_o now_o you_o will_v say_v how_o do_v god_n appear_v that_o he_o do_v not_o accept_v of_o they_o he_o will_v appear_v in_o these_o three_o thing_n 1_o first_o by_o blast_v those_o that_o do_v worship_n he_o thus_o in_o a_o formal_a way_n it_o shall_v at_o first_o be_v secret_a but_o afterward_o it_o will_v appear_v more_o apparent_o and_o we_o see_v it_o by_o experience_n that_o such_o as_o have_v be_v professor_n of_o religion_n and_o worship_n god_n in_o hypocrisy_n and_o in_o formality_n they_o have_v be_v blast_v in_o their_o part_n and_o common_a gift_n the_o judgement_n of_o god_n upon_o nadab_n and_o abihu_n that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_v it_o be_v secret_a at_o first_o it_o strike_v they_o dead_a and_o though_o by_o fire_n yet_o if_o you_o read_v the_o story_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o their_o clothes_n be_v not_o burn_v and_o yet_o they_o be_v burn_v in_o their_o body_n so_o the_o lord_n some_o time_n do_v blast_v man_n inward_o in_o their_o spirit_n in_o their_o soul_n in_o their_o part_n in_o their_o common_a gift_n â—he_n blast_v they_o i_o say_v inward_o though_o it_o do_v not_o appear_v outward_o yet_o at_o length_n it_o will_v appear_v before_o man_n that_o they_o be_v blast_v and_o in_o these_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o lord_n do_v come_v with_o spiritual_a judgement_n rather_o than_o with_o outward_a temporal_a judgement_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n those_o that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n the_o lord_n do_v appear_v by_o some_o external_a and_o visible_a way_n upon_o their_o body_n but_o now_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n there_o god_n come_v with_o more_o spiritual_a judgement_n upon_o man_n soul_n and_o those_o be_v the_o most_o terrible_a judgement_n we_o have_v a_o notable_a scripture_n for_o this_o in_o isa_n 29._o 13._o how_o god_n do_v blast_v those_o that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o holy_a duty_n wherefore_o the_o lord_n say_v for_o asmuch_o as_o this_o people_n draw_v near_o i_o with_o their_o mouth_n and_o with_o their_o lip_n do_v honour_n i_o but_o have_v remove_v their_o heart_n far_o from_o i_o and_o their_o fear_n towards_o i_o be_v teach_v by_o the_o precept_n of_o man_n mark_v what_o follow_v therefore_o behold_v i_o will_v proceed_v to_o do_v a_o marvellous_a work_n among_o this_o people_n even_o a_o marvellous_a work_n and_o a_o wonder_n for_o the_o wisdom_n of_o their_o wise_a man_n shall_v perish_v and_o the_o understanding_n of_o their_o prudent_a man_n shall_v be_v hide_v what_o do_v they_o come_v and_o draw_v near_o i_o with_o their_o lip_n and_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o i_o and_o do_v they_o worship_v i_o in_o a_o formal_a way_n i_o will_v take_v away_o the_o wisdom_n from_o the_o wise_a and_o the_o understanding_n from_o the_o prudent_a and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o so_o many_o great_a scholar_n be_v blast_v in_o their_o very_a part_n because_o they_o will_v worship_v god_n according_a to_o the_o precept_n of_o man_n in_o a_o formal_a way_n and_o so_o all_o hypocrite_n and_o formal_a worshipper_n the_o lord_n do_v blast_v they_o in_o one_o way_n or_o other_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n be_v sometime_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n but_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n there_o we_o find_v general_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n to_o be_v more_o spiritual_a upon_o the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n of_o man_n we_o find_v it_o by_o experience_n god_n do_v discover_v that_o he_o do_v not_o accept_v of_o such_o as_o those_o be_v and_o therefore_o when_o you_o see_v any_o that_o have_v make_v profession_n of_o religion_n that_o have_v excellent_a part_n at_o first_o many_o common_a gift_n and_o now_o be_v as_o we_o say_v no_o body_n remember_v this_o text_n that_o god_n will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o those_o that_o come_v nigh_o i_o second_o the_o lord_n do_v manifest_a that_o he_o will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o those_o that_o draw_v nigh_o he_o by_o awake_v their_o conscience_n many_o time_n upon_o their_o sick_a bed_n and_o death_n bed_n the_o lord_n do_v force_v they_o to_o give_v glory_n to_o he_o and_o there_o to_o acknowledge_v that_o they_o do_v not_o worship_n god_n in_o uprightness_n but_o in_o formality_n and_o now_o they_o be_v in_o horror_n of_o conscience_n and_o cry_v out_o in_o the_o anguish_n of_o their_o soul_n upon_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o dreadful_a wrath_n of_o god_n that_o be_v upon_o they_o take_v heed_n for_o the_o lord_n sake_n of_o this_o thing_n when_o you_o be_v perform_v of_o the_o duty_n of_o worship_n do_v not_o rest_v in_o the_o outward_a duty_n for_o they_o will_v never_o comfort_v you_o upon_o your_o sick_a and_o death_n bed_n you_o may_v perhaps_o put_v off_o your_o conscience_n a_o little_a for_o the_o present_a but_o when_o you_o come_v upon_o your_o sick_a bed_n there_o will_v be_v no_o comfort_n unto_o you_o and_o then_o you_o will_v be_v force_v to_o say_v well_o all_o this_o while_n i_o have_v but_o take_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a and_o now_o god_n have_v reject_v i_o and_o all_o my_o service_n and_o you_o will_v then_o speak_v to_o those_o that_o come_v about_o your_o bed_n side_n and_o bid_v they_o take_v warning_n by_o you_o take_v heed_n that_o when_o you_o worship_n god_n you_o worship_v he_o to_o purpose_n i_o have_v spend_v time_n in_o prayer_n and_o hear_v but_o for_o want_n of_o this_o i_o find_v i_o have_v no_o comfort_n at_o all_o but_o the_o lord_n appear_v to_o be_v terrible_a to_o my_o soul_n and_o come_v out_o against_o i_o as_o a_o enemy_n i_o say_v now_o god_n name_n be_v sanctify_v what_o with_o joy_n and_o yet_o they_o have_v not_o this_o honest_a heart_n yea_o they_o may_v hear_v the_o word_n so_o as_o to_o bring_v forth_o a_o blade_n and_o yet_o not_o have_v this_o honest_a heart_n by_o this_o honest_a heart_n i_o take_v therefore_o to_o be_v mean_v this_o a_o heart_n that_o deal_v square_o and_o true_o with_o god_n behave_v itself_o in_o a_o beseem_a manner_n suitable_a to_o that_o authority_n and_o excellency_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o now_o for_o example_n 1_o first_o among_o man_n he_o be_v account_v a_o honest_a man_n that_o deal_v a_o honest_a heart_n not_o one_o that_o only_o will_v be_v forward_o for_o god_n in_o some_o one_o action_n wherein_o he_o may_v enjoy_v himself_o as_o well_o as_o god_n but_o one_o that_o deal_v other_o that_o we_o account_v honesty_n so_o when_o a_o man_n behaviour_n towards_o the_o word_n be_v such_o as_o do_v beseem_v the_o word_n of_o that_o god_n with_o who_o he_o have_v to_o deal_v that_o look_v what_o excellency_n what_o glory_n there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n such_o a_o suitable_a behaviour_n there_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n to_o it_o this_o be_v a_o honest_a heart_n so_o that_o there_o be_v those_o two_o thing_n when_o a_o man_n be_v square_a with_o god_n in_o one_o thing_n as_o well_o as_o another_o and_o when_o there_o be_v a_o suitableness_n in_o the_o behaviour_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o what_o excellency_n there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n when_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n will_v not_o abuse_v the_o word_n at_o all_o but_o behave_v its_o self_n honest_o according_a unto_o the_o gravity_n holiness_n and_o weight_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n and_o thus_o now_o with_o such_o a_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n we_o be_v to_o receive_v the_o word_n if_o we_o will_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o it_o 10_o a_o ten_o particular_a be_v this_o if_o we_o will_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o the_o word_n we_o must_v hide_v the_o word_n in_o our_o heart_n we_o must_v not_o only_a heart_n the_o word_n but_o keep_v it_o preserve_v it_o and_o then_o do_v we_o declare_v that_o we_o account_v the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o be_v word_n and_o manifest_v the_o high_a esteem_n i_o have_v of_o it_o now_o if_o i_o receive_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v of_o great_a value_n if_o i_o slight_a it_o and_o let_v any_o body_n take_v it_o from_o i_o i_o do_v not_o give_v a_o testimony_n to_o the_o excellency_n of_o that_o thing_n but_o if_o i_o take_v it_o and_o lock_v it_o up_o and_o so_o keep_v it_o under_o lock_n and_o key_n i_o do_v thereby_o give_v a_o testimony_n of_o the_o esteem_n that_o i_o have_v of_o the_o excellency_n of_o that_o thing_n so_o now_o when_o i_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o meet_v with_o truth_n that_o have_v get_v into_o my_o soul_n i_o close_o with_o they_o and_o be_o resolve_v within_o my_o heart_n as_o i_o be_o hear_v of_o they_o well_o this_o truth_n i_o will_v keep_v through_o name_n sanctify_v in_o it_o 3_o three_o the_o name_n of_o god_n must_v be_v sanctify_v in_o the_o word_n because_o the_o word_n be_v very_o quick_a and_o lively_a it_o work_v man_n or_o woman_n to_o time_n of_o man_n ignorance_n god_n wink_v at_o but_o now_o he_o call_v all_o man_n to_o repent_v let_v they_o look_v to_o it_o now_o god_n do_v forbear_v in_o the_o time_n of_o ignorance_n but_o he_o will_v not_o forbear_v so_o when_o the_o word_n come_v now_o be_v the_o axe_n lay_v to_o the_o root_n of_o the_o tree_n and_o when_o be_v that_o when_o john_n baptist_n come_v to_o preach_v repentance_n because_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n be_v at_o hand_n though_o the_o tree_n be_v barren_a before_o and_o do_v not_o bring_v forth_o good_a fruit_n yet_o it_o may_v stand_v still_o and_o not_o be_v cut_v down_o but_o when_o the_o powerful_a ministration_n of_o the_o word_n come_v than_o the_o axe_n be_v lay_v to_o the_o root_n of_o the_o tree_n either_o now_o come_v in_o and_o his_o part_n promise_n and_o make_v a_o covenant_n that_o he_o will_v bestow_v his_o son_n life_n and_o salvation_n through_o he_o and_o thou_o must_v likewise_o come_v in_o on_o thy_o part_n and_o believe_v on_o his_o son_n and_o repent_v which_o be_v the_o tenor_n of_o the_o gospel_n now_o every_o time_n thou_o come_v to_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n thou_o come_v to_o renew_v this_o about_o it_o it_o be_v a_o wicked_a thing_n to_o use_v curse_n but_o it_o be_v a_o most_o wicked_a thing_n to_o wish_v evil_a to_o other_o in_o a_o way_n of_o prayer_n yet_o how_o many_o do_v so_o though_o it_o may_v be_v they_o do_v not_o think_v it_o they_o speak_v to_o god_n and_o desire_v he_o to_o bring_v such_o and_o such_o evil_n upon_o their_o neighbour_n yea_o sometime_o parent_n
